The way you live every day. That’s what should decide how you plan your home. And creating a home that really works is not so difficult. This is the

essence of the IKEA Catalog 2009. The following text is an excerpt from the introduction, and it’s based on an interview with Senior Interior Design-er Mia Gustavsson, who was part of the catalog team:

“The first few pages of the catalog show parts of a

three bedroom home designed for a family of four – a place where they can relax, work and play. We wanted to show that a home that works for every-one in the family doesn’t have to be very expen-sive or very difficult to create. Part of the brief was

to accommodate many activities and needs in a limited space, making it a welcoming, functional

and comfortable home. Few people have the priv-ilege to live in a place with fancy architecture and soaring ceilings, so we started by building walls to recreate a fairly standard box shaped home. The open plan living area allows the entire family to do different things, while still being together. But it also requires clearly defined zones to remain or-ganised and calm so that family members don’t get on each others nerves.”

The most important thing to remember, according to Mia, is to have the courage to plan your home based on your lifestyle rather than conventions:

“Let your home reflect who you are and how you

live. That’s how you make it work.”

Sofas that master everyday life – at affordable prices. What might seem like an impossible equation for most home furnishing compa-nies, is a living reality for IKEA. For us, there’s no other way. Why should real good comfort and quality only be a matter for people with well-filled wallets?

We see our products as having “Everyday Quality” - that’s why we of-fer our limited warranties for free. Our sofas are designed and tested to handle reality, whether it’s about everyday wear and tear, jumping children or wine stains. Here are some tests our sofas must pass be-fore they reach the IKEA stores: • “The getting up and down from the sofa year after year test”: All frames and cushions are tested to withstand a 220 lbs weight pressing down the sofa 50,000 times.• “The sitting on the armrest test”: all armrests have to withstand a 220 lbs weight at their weakest point 5,000 times• “The having dinner in the sofa test”: all IKEA covers must han-dle machine wash at least 40 times without losing their shape and color.Testing our sofas for everyday life is a way of making sure our customers get the value for money the deserve. That we guarantee.

ROMA red – the new cover for IKEA PS bed sofa

Designer Tomas Sandell and Chris Martin“Our idea with IKEA PS sofa-bed was to make a sofa-bed that is easy to understand and simple to use. We didn’t want to hide the function or make it unnecessar-ily complicated. The sofa is actu-ally so easy to convert to a bed that you can do it with one hand! We also wanted the design to be both playful and practical at the same time. One example is the oversized castors that give the

sofa a youthful feeling, but also make it roll well without scratch-ing the floor.”

A complete media solutionTrue friends are hard to find, but

BILLY is lucky. This classic book-case has now even more support-ers by its side. The new BENNO TV panel is a perfect example. Not only does it coordinate with BILLY in color and shape, it also makes it more complete since BENNO is designed for media equipment, like TVs, CDs and DVDs.

BERGSBO bookcase in red or white compliments BILLY by of-fering deeper shelves and glass doors. The perfect place for big-ger books and collectibles. Thanks to the design of BERGSBO, it can be used both as a solitaire book-case, as well as a nice compliment to the BILLY series.

More than a beautiful lamp They make such a difference – both in terms of well-being and every-day comfort. And LJUSÅS table lamps have all the right features a liv-ing room needs. These organic shaped, mouth-blown glass lamps are not only beautiful eye-catchers with lots of personality, they’re also designed to handle many different types of light settings. All LJUSÅS lamps have a built-in cord dimmer, that makes it possible to set the perfect light for any occasion. And since they take up to 100W bulbs, they can lighten up an entire room if necessary.

LJUSÅS comes in four different versions, each with their own person-ality and expression.

Designer Anne Nilsson“When I designed LJUSÅS YSBY I thought about a plump woman with round, feminine shapes. By working with mouth-blown glass I could give the lamp an unexpect-ed, organic and generous look. The strong personality makes LJUSÅS YSBY stand out and also gives character to really big liv-ing rooms. It’s exciting that the lamp both works as a sculpture and has smart details like a cord dimmer switch that make it very functional.”

Designer Maria Vinka“I usually have different charac-ters and creatures in mind when I design a product - and when I worked with LJUSÅS USTA it was a gnome. The reason I made the lamp so long and narrow is so it would fit everywhere and still

look very distinctive. I also want-ed LJUSÅS USTA to provide func-tional lighting and at the same time serve as a personal sculp-ture in the room.”

Designer Linda Svensson “During my trips to North Africa I fell in love with the scents, the colors and the shapes. When I created the JORUN collection I imagined I was back there, at a lively bazaar, looking at all the colorful spices and beauti-ful winding ironwork. By focusing on all these graphical elements, I wanted to merge the ethnic Af-rican style with our cool Scandi-navian. The earthy color scheme makes it easy to use the collection together with other things in your home.”

Designer Petra Börner“When I work on new ideas I usu-ally use paper collage to build and develop the pattern. I find it

a good way to get sharp contrasts and a balance of well-planned and spontaneous elements. The result is a harmony between bold and pleasant. I focused on opti-cal and graphic patterns when I created the JORUN collection and was inspired by the plant and animal kingdoms. I hope you experience the patterns in the collection as clean, linear, simple and elegant.”

INGER fabric $5.99/yd Designer: Anna Salander. W59”. Assorted patterns 301.401.79

Designer Anna Salander “Fruit drink party in the arbor. Leaves on trees and flowers. And

the secret door to homemade fruit drinks and jams. 1973 we sat there, my cousin and I. We were almost the same age and both of us had grass stains on our white knee socks. It was sum-mer and there were dangerous wasps that, like us, wanted to refresh themselves in the arbor with grandma’s fruit drink. Call it nostalgia, if you want. I call it, “The magic of the arbor.” Magic that gave me the inspiration for INGER fabric.”

Designer Ehlén Johansson: “The pattern on KÅRABODA lan-tern is inspired by a window in an old building in Copenhagen. The building was built as a stable, but today it’s a modern office and I

once had my workspace there. On the upper floor there was

an old window with the original decorated glass intact. It was like a little jewel in the otherwise raw building. In the same way as that window made the whole building more beautiful, I want KÅRABO-DA to enhance and brighten up many rooms.”

That’s why they come in many different sizes and have a neu-tral colour that brings out the plants. You can combine the pots with MANDEL saucer, which has a wide brim that gives the pot character. And the brim is more than just decorative - it’s practi-cal if you happen to spill a little when watering.”

Designed to pleaseWith a neutral design and lots of sizes to choose from, MANDEL flow-er pot can be used all over the home. Flowers will also appreciate it, since the toned down look makes any pot plant shine.

Designer Monika Mulder: “The shape was extra important when I designed IKEA PS VÅLLÖ water can. I wanted to give it an organic, fluid shape so it would

harmonize with plants and run-ning water. By using different templates I was able to sculpt a prototype that felt completely perfect. The final water can has

both a shape and color that make you want to have it out on display, instead of hidden away. If you like, you can also use it as a juice pitcher and a vase.”

ULTIMATE SLEEPING 2008We believe everyone should have the chance to find their

ideal sleeping comfort. No matter where you live, no mat-ter the size of your wallet. That’s why we, throughout the years, have gathered an extensive amount of information – from Sweden, Austria and Italy to North America, Israel and Australia – about people’s sleep preferences and the kind of comfort they dream of. The result is a unique range of mattresses, quilts and pillows that provide women and men with individual comfort solutions that really enhances their chances of a good night’s sleep:

• Mattresses that contour to the shape of your body and give greater support; that relieve pressure; that allow air to circulate and that transport moisture away. • Quilts in several different and new materials that help regulate temperature, wick moisture away and maintain a comfortable micro-climate between the sheets. • Ergonomic pillows to meet the varying needs of how peo-ple sleep. • Mattress and pillow protectors that even further enhances the comfort the quality in bed. This is just a small portion of all benefits. Want to know

more? Read all about the improved SULTAN, MYSA, GOSA, IKEA 365+ and SKYDDA range in the upcoming IKEA Com-fort press material!

Door-openers for any bedroomA great space-saver? No, that’s not usually a feature you connect with wardrobes. But by using sliding doors, instead of regular doors, there will be more room for everything else. Another great benefit with slid-ing doors is the easy access and immediate overview of what’s inside. It can still be traditional – as with PAX BIRKELAND – or a bit extrava-gant – as with PAX ÅRDAL. When walls and corners complicate things, hinged doors are a better option, like PAX VINSTRA, for example.

When it comes to the inside of PAX, KOMPLEMENT is the best solution for storing and organizing. Many of the KOMPLEMENT pieces exist in the same finsishes as PAX for perfect co-ordination.

Store in style! HEMNES, MALM and VINSTRA are three extensive and popular series for bedrooms, including bed frames, wardrobes, mirrors and much more. And this year we’re adding even more options:

In the HEMNES series, we’re introducing a linen cabinet in yellow, a wardrobe and bedside table in white and black-brown, as well as a storage bench in red.

For the MALM series (see next page), we’re adding green and trans-parent gray glass tops for MALM chest of drawers, that protect the surface and add a stylish look to each storage unit.

The VINSTRA series (see next page) has been updated with three more chest of drawers, as well as a dressing table with adjustable mirror. Special features in the VINSTRA series include smooth running drawers (some tiltable and extra deep) and adjustable feet. Some VINSTRA units are also equipped with casters for flexible placing.

Designer Anna Lerinder“My idea with the CELEBER se-ries was to make classic storage jars for the kitchen. I wanted the jars to be so beautiful that you could have them on display - at the same time as they make daily life more functional. That’s why I added close-fitting wooden

lids that stay securely in place when you move the jar, and dif-ferent sizes that are suitable for today’s storage needs. Another practical thing is that part of the lid is transparent, so you can see what’s inside the jar.”

Keeping food fresh longerOver the years, we’ve learned a thing or two about saving food in a good, reliable way. With our new range of food savers, there’s not a single leftover, vegetable, herb or vinegar that won’t feel comfortable in the kitchen. Since every series has its own practical and smart fea-tures – like transparent and aroma-sealing lids, freezer-safe materi-als, stackable design, etc – we think people will appreciate them too. DISTANS, IKEA 365+, RARITET and KRUS – they’re all there to make everyday life a little bit easier.

Designer Susan Pryke“IKEA 365+ is a series of basics to cover all your needs - for for-mal or informal meals, every day of the year. For breakfast, lunch and dinner, and for food from every cuisine. I was inspired by modern Scandinavian design as well as by traditional English styles and wanted to combine them in a good quality series that would be practical and timeless, it would become a natural part of your home. All they need. The TROFAST series. The sturdy storage system that’s flexible enough to fit just about any-where. And by adding or taking away units, it’ll quickly adopt to the changing needs of the growing child. Just like HERMELIN and all our IKEA cribs, for example. To prevent falls, the bed base can be lowered as the baby grows, while the bed side can be taken away when the child is big enough to climb into or out of the bed.

TROFAST changing table combination $510.96 Design: Mia Gammelgaard/Studio Copenhagen. Pine frame, red polypropylene doors and blue polypropylene drawers. 398.516.26 HERMELIN crib $129 W29½xL53½xH32"”. Blue 601.160.07
