Hiking Area
Ruunaa English
Ruunaa’s raging rapids in Eastern Finland are just a stone’s throw from the Russian border. These wild waters are an excellent place for unforgettable canoeing, rafting and fishing adventures. Visitors can freely use Ruunaa’s facilities including well marked trails and pleasant picnic sites.
Wild whitewater rapidsThe best way to explore Ruunaa’s rapids is to take a guided boat trip. The longest trips go the whole 30 km from Matkalahti to the bridge at Naarajoki. Canoeing is also popular here. Canoeists descending the area’s class II and III rapids should be experienced and have suitable safety equipment and whitewater kayaks or covered canoes.
Inviting trailsThe hiking area has almost 60 km of well marked trails. Nature trails at Närelenkki (2 km) Neitikoski and Siikakoski (3 and 5 km) are suitable for families. More demanding routes include a trail running around Lake Neitijärvi (22 km), and the Koskikierros Trail along the rapids (31 km). These trails can be combined for a longer trek. The Karhunpolku Trail runs through the hiking area, leading to the extensive Karjalan Kierros regional trail network. In winter cross-country skiing trails run alongside Ruunaa’s open rapids, and a round snowmobile route runs through the hiking area.
Fishing in the rapidsRuunaa has several wild rapids with a total length of almost 8 km, where keen anglers can enjoy fishing for rainbow trout, brown trout pike-perch and grayling. Permits can be purchased from the visitor centre.
Ruunaa Hiking Centre Located by the Neitikoski, and open during the summer, the centre is an ideal gateway to the hiking area. Information on Ruunaa’s attractions and facilities is freely available, and maps and permits are on sale. The centre’s facilities are fully accessible to disabled visitors. • Ruunaa Hiking Centre
