01 ikoo and Traditional Chinese Medicine (short TCM)Chinese Medicine has been practiced for over 3,000 years to improve our

well-being and health. The most popular known therapy of TCM is acupuncture

where needles are used to stimulate reflex points. Other important therapeutic

methods of TCM are herbal medicine, Chinese massage and qigong.

An increasing number of studies indicate the effectiveness of TCM, as it

influences the autonomous nervous system which is the main control center

of the body. It adjusts and regulates the functions of all organs (for example

the blood pressure, the immune system, the cardiac cycle and breathing). The

stress nerves regulate overall bodily activation (sympathetic drive), relaxation

nerves control the regenerative processes such as generating energy and

activating self-healing powers. TCM acts within this system and can restore

well-being and promote long-term health.

In recent years, many scientific studies have proven the effectiveness of TCM.

Acupuncture has been one of the most common practices.

02 the unique potential of the ikoo brush Three 3 key features define the unique potential of the ikoo brush.

1. Due to its optimized bristle architecture the brush painlessly detangles

the hair. Brushing the hair without the usual strains and pains is now

possible. Detangled hair is also less prone to break or – even worse –

to be ripped out of its root.

2. The concave shape of ikoo has the perfect fit for the human skull. This

ergonomic feature allows for the manual pressure when brushing to be

evenly distributed.

3. ikoo massages the scalp as well as important acupuncture points due to

its unique bristle architecture and purpose-built bristle flexibility.

03 health benefits of ikooThe painless brushing of the hair can be a useful contribution towards the

relief of several symptoms.

Experts of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recommend the daily brush-

ing with the ikoo brush – a head massage – as part of a holistic therapy

concept.

Traditionally, head massages are used in almost all cultures. The most

popular are the Indian and Tibetan head massages. Unfortunately, most

people do not have the possibility to get a daily massage by a professional.

A practical alternative is a daily self-massage with the ikoo brush.

From the perspective of TCM, it is common that the Qi which is the vegetative

unconscious functional energy, stagnates in the head and neck area due to

overworking and overthinking.

This stagnation is often felt as a pressure pain in the head or tension

and pain in the neck. In addition, people often complain about pressure

and pain in the forehead. A head massage helps to relieve the heavy or dull

headedness that results of spending execessive hours in front of a screen.

A positive side eff ect is the relaxation of the facial muscles which also helps

prevent wrinkles and contributes to a more youthful appearance.

TCM assumes that the vegetative activation of body tissue can be influenced by

acupuncture points. A series of these points of similar function form a meri-

dian. The head is especially important in that regard as half of all meridians

start or end there. Two important meridians on the head are: the meridian

activation (Dumai) and the meridian relaxation (Bladder). When receiving a

head massage, the masseur can influence the autonomous nervous system

via these acupoints and meridians.

04 the function of a head massageThe mechanism of a head massage can be explained as follows: every hair acts

as a sensor and sends the functional state of the skin areal via associated

nerve cells to the brain which regulates the body surface. If a body area for

example experiences coldness, the skin region contracts resulting in a loss of

flexibility of the skin. Besides the receptors for temperature there are receptors,

that detect any pulling or pressure to the skin.

Interupting this mechanism causes problems with tension and disturbance of

the blood circulation can occur. Consequently this body area does not

function well with the neighboring body areas, for example because this area

is no longer flexible enough. In this way the original disturbance of a harmonic

flow of energy potentially causes a new problem elsewhere in the body.

The autonomous functional activation of the head and neck area is often

strong. The result is a stagnation of energy and the area feels tense. The

patients experience pressure in the head, neck, shoulder or the eyes and

eventually pain develops. A massage of the head can harmonize the energy

flow and prevent or alleviate the symptoms.
