FIVE years ago a group of volunteers launched the Lymm Foodbank, hoping it would be a short term arrangement to tackle a short term crisis.

Now ve years on, as they say themselves, it is hardly an anniversary to celebrate.

The fact there is an increasing demand on Foodbanks is a sorry indictment of the times we live in.

No one in the civilised world should have to rely on Foodbanks but the sorry state of affairs means even working families rely on them to avoid going hungry.

It is said many of us are only two or three pay cheques away from being in need of support from a Foodbank, as some of those working for collapsed companies like Thomas Cook, recently found out.

Our economy is in a fragile state on the back of the uncertainty caused by Brexit and now the threat of a pandemic from Coronavirus hitting the headlines.

I fear the need for Foodbanks is going to be around for a long time to come yet.

So while the 5th anniversary of the Lymm Foodbank is not something really to celebrate, we should be celebrating the fantastic work of the volunteers who give up their time freely to provide this local resource for those in need in our community.

Many of those involved are familiar faces on the local circuit who give up their time on various community events and activities.

Well done to all of you who help out and Lymm is lucky to have you.

I would like to think that the need

for Foodbanks will be gone within the next ve years – but I am not holding my breath!

So keep up the good work as you are all true community champions.

Lymm Foodbank marks ve years of collections in

villageIT was early in 2015 that Su Williams, prompted by the news of the increasing need for foodbanks, got together with colleagues from Lymm Labour Party to hold a collection for the Warrington Foodbank run by the Trussell Trust.

Since then, and for past the ve years, the group has gathered outside Sainsbury’s in the village on the rst Saturday of the month for two hours from 10am to 12pm.

“We are certainly not ‘celebrating’ having been here for ve years.” Su said: “I had hoped that this might be some sort of crisis that would be over by now. Instead the use of foodbanks has increased all over the country as more and more people nd themselves in desperate circumstances.”

“The positive side of it is seeing the support that comes from all parts the community” commented Trish Cockayne, another member of the group who is now a part-time volunteer with the Trussell Trust.

“Each month I draw up a list of what is most needed and folk respond to that. We always get great backing from local people who help run the event and we are also grateful to Diane Rickman the manager of the Sainsbury’s store

who looks after us on the day with hot drinks and also tops up our collection from time to time.”

Local schools and church groups also contribute regularly to the collection.

You can learn more about the invaluable work of the Trussell Trust at trusselltrust.org.

Exhibition on the great Heatley salt rush!

RESIDENTS of Heatley, who take the time to look closely at the deeds of their property, may nd a clause stopping them from boring for minerals.

It is not something they would probably ever consider, but the fascinating story that lies behind it is now being told at Lymm Heritage Centre.

One hundred years ago, Heatley was a hive of industrial activity, with salt works on either side of Birch Brook Road and railway sidings leading to both of them from the Warrington – Altrincham line (now the Trans-Pennine Trail). One of them, J. J. Verdin Cooke’s Heatley Salt Works, even made a start on a railway line to a planned wharf on the Manchester Ship Canal. While many jobs were created by the salt factories, there was the very real possibility of chemical works being developed to rival Widnes or Runcorn.

Some residents also feared, quite rightly as it turned out, that brine extraction would lead to subsidence. Walls cracked,

windows tilted and two whole rows of houses had to be demolished. Even their street names: Carlton Road and Carlton Terrace, have disappeared.

The Heritage Centre exhibit, which features a display of salt workers’ tools and intriguing ‘then and now’ aerial photographs, tells the story from the discovery of salt at the turn of the twentieth century to the closure of the various works over the 25 years from 1950. There is a book too. “The Great Heatley Salt Rush” is packed with photographs and stories of this unique chapter in Lymm’s history. At just £4 it’s a great souvenir and certainly belongs on every bookshelf in Heatley.

The Centre is open from 12-4 pm from Thursday to Sunday. Admission is free though, of course, donations are always welcome.

Methodist minister in motor cycle leathers

NEW minister at Lymm Methodist Church, the Rev Mark Coles is as likely to be seen around in motor cycle leathers as a surplice.

A member of the Christian Motorcyclists’ Association, he regularly holds special “biker services” attended by up to 100 motor cyclists and he is a motor sport enthusiast generally.

Together with his motor mechanic son, Jacob, he owns a number of classic Fords.

Mr Coles joined the local Methodist Church circuit in 2006

after spending nine years in Derbyshire. He and four other ministers are responsible for more than 20 churches in the Sankey Valley Circuit, which means he takes services at Lymm about once a month.

His “biker” services are held at Rixton – although it is possible one could be held at Lymm.

Prior to Ministerial training he served as a lay worker in

Shefeld – and before entering the Ministry he worked as a senior mechanical and electrical engineer in the construction industry – which means he can service his classic cars and motor cycles himself!

Married to Jane for more than 30 years, the couple have a daughter, Naomi, who is married to Sam and their son Jacob.

In addition to his motor sport activities, Mr Coles says he enjoys watching lms, drinking tea and “food in general”.

Local author awarded 2020 CWA Diamond Dagger

LYMM author Martin Edwards has been awarded the highest honour in British crime writing, the Crime Writers’ Association (CWA) Diamond Dagger.

Martin joins icons of the genre who have been recognised with the accolade, including Ruth Rendell, Lee Child, Ann Cleeves, Ian Rankin, PD James, Colin Dexter, Reginald Hill, Lindsey Davies, Peter Lovesey, and John Le Carré.

Alongside his career as a prolic novelist, Martin is a renowned editor, reviewer, columnist and versatile writer of non-ction, and is a leading authority on crime ction. He has also enjoyed a separate career as a solicitor, and is recognised for his expertise in employment and equal opportunities law.

The Diamond Dagger award recognises authors whose crime writing careers have been marked by sustained excellence, and who have made a signicant contribution to the genre.

Andrew Taylor, chair of the Diamond Dagger sub-committee and winner of the award in 2009, said: “I’m delighted that the CWA Committee has decided to honour Martin with this year’s Diamond Dagger. Given the range and quality of his work, together with his enormous contribution to the genre as a whole, he is the perfect recipient.”

Linda Stratmann, CWA Chair, said: “Martin Edwards has been honoured not only as an award-winning author and editor, but also as a tireless promoter of crime writing. He researches and preserves the history of the genre, and has introduced the modern reader to classics of the past that might otherwise have been forgotten.”

Martin’s rst novel, All the Lonely People, was shortlisted for the CWA

John Creasey Memorial Dagger in 1991. Since then his crime writing has won multiple awards in the UK and US. In 2018 he received the CWA Dagger in the Library, awarded by British librarians. He has won the CWA Short Story Dagger, the H.R.F. Keating award, and in 2014 the inaugural CWA Margery Allingham Prize. His novels have been shortlisted for the Theakston’s Prize and the Lakeland Book Award, while in 2017 his non-ction book The Golden Age of Murder was shortlisted for the CWA Gold Dagger. In the US he has received the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allan Poe award, an Agatha award, and two Macavity awards from Mystery Readers International. In 2017 he received the Poirot award for his outstanding contribution to the genre.

Martin said: “The Diamond Dagger is special because it’s conferred by my fellow authors and because the previous winners are so illustrious. To be part of the warm and welcoming community of crime writers for the past thirty years has been a joy. I fell in love with crime ction when as a young boy I rst discovered Agatha Christie. From then on, my only ambition was to write a detective novel that people might enjoy reading. But I never imagined receiving an accolade like this. I’m truly honoured.”

Originally known for his Harry Devlin and the Lake District Mysteries series, Martin is now making waves with his 1930s-set thrillers. His latest novel Gallows Court revived the Golden Age of crime ction with a unique twist, featuring the character

Rachel Savernake, and was last year nominated for the CWA Historical Dagger and shortlisted for the eDunnit award. The sequel, Mortmain Hall, is published in April by Head of Zeus.

In 2015, Martin followed in the footsteps of Agatha Christie, G.K. Chesterton and Dorothy L. Sayers by being elected President of the Detection Club, the world’s oldest social network of crime writers. The Club will celebrate its 90th birthday this year by publishing Howdunit (HarperCollins), edited by Martin; a masterclass of crime writing by leading exponents of the genre. He is consultant to the British Library’s bestselling Crime Classics series, and wrote the award-winning companion volume, The Story of Classic Crime in 100 Books. He is also archivist of the Detection Club and the CWA and a former Chair of the CWA. Author of over sixty short stories, since 1996 he has been the editor of the CWA’s annual anthology.

Martin was born in Knutsford, Cheshire, and now lives in Lymm. After graduating with a rst class honours degree in law from Balliol College, Oxford, he became a solicitor, acting for many high prole clients. He was head of employment law at Mace & Jones,

and subsequently a partner with Weightmans LLP, with whom he remains as a consultant. Author of four editions of Equal Opportunities Handbook, he says, “The appeal of ction is not so very different from the appeal of employment law. Both concern conicts in human behaviour – and how best to resolve them.”

The CWA Diamond Dagger is selected from nominations provided by CWA members. Nominees have to meet two essential criteria: rst, their careers must be marked by sustained excellence, and second, they must have made a signicant contribution to crime writing published in the English language.

LYMM brothers Chris and Stephen Shelmerdine opened The Coffee House in Lymm eight years ago and now own ve sites with two more set to open in the next six months.

They were in their early twenties when they opened The Coffee House in their hometown, Lymm, in 2011.

“We set out to change the way people eat, drink, and relax in their own community,” said Chris.

After spending three years focused on serving locals good products in great settings, Chris and Stephen started expanding.

“We opened our second site in Sale in 2014, a third in Partington in 2015, and a fourth in Widnes in 2017.”

But, this was just the start, as the brothers are currently in the middle of their most ambitious expansion to date: opening three sites in just six months.

“We opened our fth site in Huyton in December and now we’re gearing up for our biggest opening yet in Northwich this month,” says Chris.

“We’ll give ourselves a couple of months to settle in there before

team for helping them provide a high-level of service.

“At the moment we employ 75 local people and we expect that to have doubled to 150 by the time we’ve nished this year’s expansion!”

opening our third and nal site of the year in Bootle in May. It’s always been our ambition to grow a group of Coffee Houses.”

The secret to doing so? The right technology, staff, and produce.

“It’s all about making everything as convenient as possible as soon as customers walk through our doors.”

“We use iZettle in all of our sites to accept card payments, as we want to make it as easy as possible for our customers to pay in whatever way they prefer – whether that’s using cash, chip and pin or contactless.”

“iZettle allows us to make decisions based on data. By logging into the backend we can monitor our sales in real time, no matter where we are.”

The brothers also credit their talented

It’s been a busy few months for the brothers but things show no signs of slowing down.

“Each year we plan to move faster and better, bringing more jobs to the area while continuing to serve delicious food and drinks!”

MORE than 150 trees were planted in a family tree planting event at Cherry Tree Primary School, Lymm.

Almost 100 people attended the event and helped to plant the trees in the school grounds. With the expert help of Richard and Imogen Sawyer from Lane End Cottage Garden, families helped to plant a huge variety of trees along the edges of the school playing eld.

Richard and Imogen shared their expert knowledge with children and families showing them how to correctly plant various different trees including oak, beech, pine and r trees. The school PTA provided drinks and refreshments.

Head teacher Helen Graham said: “We were delighted that so many of our families came along to support our tree planting event and we hope that they will enjoy watching the trees grow during their time at primary school.

“We are incredibly grateful to Richard and Imogen from Lane End Cottage Garden for all their help and support. The children and their families not only really enjoyed the event but went away having learned about different types of tree and how to correctly plant them.

“Caring for our environment is important and we did that while having fun and working together to improve our school. It was wonderful to see families working

together to plant different trees and see how proud they were at their achievement at the end of the day.’

“At Cherry Tree we believe that it is very important to teach children about the importance of the environment and every child at our school takes part in allotment classes to learn how to grow and

look after plants. This was an excellent opportunity to encourage all the family to get involved.”

Grace, age 4, from the reception class said:

“I took my spade and planted seven trees with my daddy and my friends. I’m going to watch them grow every play time.”

Therapist uses her own experiences

to help treat Endometriosis

NUTRITIONAL therapist Fiona Hutchison has joined the team at Lymm Osteopathic Practice offering advice on how changing your diet and lifestyle can help tackle gynaecological conditions like Endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a common gynaecological condition where cells that normally are found inside the uterus, migrate to other areas of the body, most commonly the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel and bladder and although rare, in some cases the nose and even the lungs.

Fiona has rst-hand experience of the chronic and debilitation condition that causes painful heavy periods and can lead to fatigue, bowel and bladder problems as well as infertility.

It is estimated that around 1.5 million women in the UK are currently living with the condition and unfortunately there is currently no cure.

Managing the symptoms

Treatment for endometriosis is mainly about managing the symptoms and can include invasive surgery, hormone treatment and pain relief. But what if there was another way?

Fiona is a registered Nutritional Therapist that specialises in female hormone balance. Fiona, based at Lymm Osteopathic Practice, is passionate about helping women regain control of their hormones via nutrition and lifestyle.

Fiona knows what it’s like to suffer at the mercy of your hormones because she has herself experienced the devastating consequences of being diagnosed with endometriosis.

She said: “After trying to get pregnant for two years with no luck, it was during investigations that I was diagnosed with stage 3 endometriosis which unfortunately had caused severe scarring, ovarian cysts and had blocked my fallopian tubes. My only hope of achieving pregnancy was via IVF. Even though I had always suffered painful, heavy periods, I felt my symptoms were normal so didn’t question that it could be anything more serious.”

After having received the devastating diagnosis, she was told that there was nothing that she could do to help her condition, and it was this that spurred her on to do her own research into nutrition where she discovered that there was actually a lot that she could do.

Fiona started to change her diet and lifestyle and after a few months she started to notice that she was feeling less tired, bloated, her skin improved, she had more energy and her periods were lighter and less painful.

The change in diet and lifestyle were having an amazing impact and even though she had to embark on IVF due to the damage that the endometriosis had caused, she did go on to conceive and give birth to

her daughter in 2011.Fiona discovered that she needed

to know more about nutrition and how it impacts on hormones, so she studied naturopathic nutrition with the prestigious College of Naturopathic Medicine and qualied at the end of 2018.

Fiona helps women with all hormonal imbalances ranging from endometriosis, broids, Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), perimenopause and menopause as she understands that women do not need to just put up with their symptoms. However it is worth noting that nutritional therapy can support many conditions such as digestive complaints, skin issues, stress, immune system disorders, weight management and much more.

She always offers a free discovery call to ascertain whether nutritional therapy is the right approach for the client. Prior to the rst consultation, Fiona will then undertake a detailed health assessment and then uses a personalised approach for her clients, taking into consideration their lifestyle using nutrition and at times, supplements to help women manage their symptoms and gain control over their hormones naturally.

Fiona is registered with BANT and CNHC and appointments can be made by contacting Lymm Osteopathic Practice on 01925 752264 or emailing [email protected]

Housing scheme approved despite neighbour objections

PLANNING bosses have given the go ahead to proposals to build two detached houses at Lymm – despite opposition from 14 nearby residents and Lymm Parish Council.

The scheme will involve demolition of one large detached house in Grammar School Road and building the new homes in its extensive

two-and-a-half storey houses would be out of character with existing properties. It followed on from the granting of two previous similar applications that have resulted in existing houses being demolished to make way for large, three-storey properties.

Lymm councillor Anna Fradgeley said the new property would involve an increase in footprint and cubic volume compared with the existing house. It would present an overbearing mass of brickwork and glazing to the frontage, impacting on the spaciousness of Grammar School Road.

Design of the two houses would be out-of-keeping with the character of the road.

The parish council also objected

garden.The opposition was mainly

based on claims the site would be overdeveloped and that the proposed

on the grounds of over-development of the site.

However, planning ofcers argued that development of the site for residential purposes was acceptable and that the size, scale and massing of the proposed houses was acceptable.

They did not believe the development would cause any signicant harm to the character of the area, highway safety or ecology.

Members of Warrington’s development management committee approved the scheme following a lengthy discussion.

Chairman Cllr Tony McCarthy said: “The committee visited the site and decided the scheme was acceptable in a huge garden area.

A number of local environment groups will be taking part in a children’s craft day in conjunction with Lymm Festival on Saturday, March 21, between 10.30 and 3.30 at Lymm Village Hall.

The groups, including: The Friends of Spud Wood, Plastic Free Lymm, Oughtrington Community Orchard, Low Carbon Lymm and The National Trust (Dunham Massey), will be giving information on their activities and explaining how people can all make a contribution to help protect our environment.

Lymm Festival are providing volunteers to lead craft sessions helping children to create crafts inspired by the local environment and the creatures we share it with. Children will get the chance to make a variety of craft items including: a bug house, a pine cone bird feeder and decorating wooden plaques, amongst others.

There will also be face painting provided by Kids Planet and refreshments will be provided by Marie Curie. NT Dunham Massey will provide games, quizzes and information on activities for children at Dunham in 2020.

The day is suitable for children up to the age of 12 and all children should be accompanied by an adult. Tickets costing £2.50 will enable a child to take part in 3 sessions with the option of extra sessions at 50p; a ticket for an accompanying adult costs just 50p. No need to book in advance, just pay on the door. And bring a bag to carry home the creations.

SPEAKER Kevin Reynolds spoke on the changes in relationships with garden birds at the monthly meeting of Heatley WI.

He explained his interest in garden birds is a hobby, which began when he started making bird boxes as well as feeding birds. He said that around one hundred years ago birds were seen more as a source of food. The Agricultural Revolution brought great change, more crops meant birds increased in numbers, coming closer to homes and settling in thatched roofs. In 1822 a bill was passed regarding the cruel treatment of animals, and more legislation was to follow including the formation of the RSPCA and not long afterwards the RSPB. Towards the end of the 19th century some suffragettes campaigned to stop bird feathers being used in hat making, sometimes the whole bird was used! This practise only ceased in the 1920’s.

The years between the rst and second world wars saw the building of vast numbers of houses all boasting a garden attracting many different varieties of birds. However during the Second World War the “Dig for Victory” campaign meant lean times for them, but when the war ended gardening became more a hobby than a necessity for growing fruit and vegetables. With most kitchens now overlooking the garden, bird baths and feeders became popular attracting even more birds.

A vote of thanks was given by Liz Wellbelove for an excellent talk and slide show on the many species of birds seen in gardens every day.
