Imagine. If you remember back to being a kid, you likely dreamed of becoming remarkable. Maybe you wanted to land on the moon, save lives and leap over tall buildings. Your imagination was unencumbered and you dreamed that the impossible would be possible and that the world had no limits. For many of Calgary’s most vulnerable children and youth, they are simply wondering where they will sleep tonight and find their next meal, no longer dreaming or thriving. For these, Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary is the place that protects their imagination and helps them dream once again.

Each and every day in every quadrant of our city, children and youth find belonging and hope within Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary. They find a safe place to be, caring adults that offer hope and who engage them in transformational programs and services that help them rekindle their imagination and achieve their dreams. All of this is made possible because of the passion and dedication of our staff, volunteers, donors and community partners. For this, we are deeply grateful. Together with you, we imagine a world where all youth are safely in a place they can call home, children go to school well-nourished and graduate from high school and ultimately everyone thrives.

This last year was a transformational year for us as we celebrated the remarkable accomplishments of Cheryl Doherty and I was welcomed on as Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary’s new CEO. We navigated challenging economic times alongside all Calgarians while making sure that our city’s children and youth had what they needed. We are grateful that you were with us every step of the way. On behalf of our whole organization, we offer our sincere thanks for doing your part to imagine a world where everyone belongs and thrives.

As we look forward, we continue to dream big and remain committed to provide thousands of children and youth with a second home and a safe place where they feel secure, cared for and valued – a place where their needs are met and where they have the opportunity dream big, work hard, achieve their goals, become thriving adults and reach their fullest potential in life. We imagine the year ahead to be remarkable and look forward to the journey with you.

Children and Youth need a safe place to thrive and imagine without limitations

Since 2008, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Foundation has imagined and created great things for our children and youth. RBC’s core purpose is to help our clients thrive and communities prosper. RBC Foundation has been providing Club children with safe and positive places and young girls at Haven’s Way with a safe, supportive home environment where they can begin to heal and grow into successful adults. RBC believes they have a role in helping create a world that is healthier, more prosperous and inclusive. The support of RBC Foundation has allowed our children and youth to have access to positive relation-ships, engaging activities, new experiences and the resources needed to grow and develop.

"We believe tomorrow’s prosperity depends on today’s young people and their ability to take on the future. We feel we have a role to help change that and our support of organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary is deeply connected to our commitment to help young peo-ple thrive," says Jerilynn Daniels, Senior Manager, Community Investments & Marketing, Public Affairs at Royal Bank of Canada.

As a committed and passionate supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary, Beth Rankin has been actively involved in providing safe spaces and helping to remove barriers for children, youth and their families.

Seventeen years ago, Beth started her first program with BGCC that remains dear to her heart today. Beth, a.k.a The Bike Lady continues to purchase new bikes for children attending Community Clubs. Beth leaves it up to the parents to decide who they say the bikes are from allowing the parents the opportunity to have the joy of giving such a special gift. Beth’s true goal is for children and their families to have the same opportunities as others. In essence leveling the playing field for all.

In 2007, during a conversation with Cheryl Doherty, former CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary, Beth decided that she wanted to support the agency with the renovation of the historic Hanger in Renfrew. Her generous contribution not only supported this capital build but also allowed so many children and youth to participate in the arts and culture through funding of unique programs several years after the facility opened. A facility that all are very proud of.

Beth continues to support BGCC with her latest project that is sure to have a strong impact on Camp Adventure. What started as a kitchen renovation grew to an entire new building. With a fabulous team, Beth’s vision has become a reality with the opening of Rankin Hall at Camp Adventure on May 26, 2017.

Beth strongly believes in the importance of Camp Adventure; providing an outdoor learning environment for children, youth

and families. The camp experience is life changing for kids. It’s where they learn valuable skills and gain life experiences that they will carry with them forever. While at Camp, children have the opportunity to create deep and meaningful relationships with caring adults, make new friends and strengthen old friendships. Children and youth get to experience exciting activities, such as, canoeing, archery, ecology, team building, arts and crafts, evening camp fires, and outdoor adventures but they leave with much more. Long lasting friendships, stories, laughter and the joy of spending time together will be celebrated in Rankin Hall at Camp Adventure. Rankin Hall is built with the future in mind. It is a beautiful building designed in the spirit of the tip is that house our many children and youth during the summer. The high, peaked roof in the dining area surrounded by large windows giving a panoramic view ofthe Kananaskis wilderness gives users a real sense of the majesty of camp.

Rankin Hall marks the Camp Adventure's first building that will offer year round services including lighting, water and heat all of which will run off of solar power to reduce our environmental footprint and decrease our operating costs.

These incredible achievements would not be possible without Beth’s support. With her children and grand-children, and the spirit of her late husband, Gordon, standing beside her, Beth’s legacy will live on in Rankin Hall and the many BGCC contributions for generations to come. Rankin Hall stands in honour of the strength of family and helps level the playing field for the children and youth of Camp Adventure today and in the future.

Imagine that every youth would grow up to be a leader

Before getting involved with Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary’s Keystone program. Angela had acquaintances at school, but didn’t have a lot of friends to spend quality time with outside of school. She frequently stayed at home and watched TV to pass the time.

Since joining Keystone, a leadership development program for youth 14 to 18, Angela has grown and developed more than she imagined was possible in a short period of time. In September 2016, Angela took on the role of Co-President of Keystone where she was able to build relationships and become a role model for others: I’m good at leading activities with my peers, speaking to my peers and trying to be an example for them. I am a lot more confident with how I speak and how I act with people my age. She recognizes Keystone has played a crucial role in developing her leadership skills: Keystone has taught me how to be a leader through experience. You can read about it or you can hear about it, but I got thrown into the ring when I became Co-President so I just had to do it. I think that is the best way to learn.

Throughout her time at Keystone and as the Co-President, she has had the opportunity to embrace diversity and understand that people have different life stories and upbringings that make them unique individuals. Angela has developed a number of great friendships and views the staff as mentors. Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary’s Keystone staff are people that she looks up to; they allow her to feel safe while she is at the program and are there for her when she needs them.

As a leader and future professional, Angela imagines herself as an Ultrasound Technician where she can spend each day meeting and talking to people, working on a team and helping patients feel cared for. She thrives on helping people and building impactful connections. She also sees herself as a future volunteer with Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary. Angela spends time with her Keystone family every Thursday: I look forward to it every week, Thursday is my favorite day of the week. Without it I would be really sad. I wouldn’t be who I am, it has shaped me for sure. I have been growing up and Keystone has been a big part of that.

Angela’s Journey to Becoming a LeaderThanks to your encouragement and belief in our youth, Angela has a bright and successful future.

“As long as you believe in yourself, you can do anything. Everyone is capable of something great.”

"Imagine if every child and every person had someone who believed in them so much that they began to believe in themselves"

Beginning at the young, vulnerable age of 4 years old, Madeline was entrenched in domestic violence and was physically and mentally abused. At the age of 8 her environment filled with weapons and addiction, and at 14 she began to be sexually abused alongside the horrors of physical and mental abuse. She felt unworthy, unloved and that she was never good enough. In addition to the torturous abuse Madeline faced, she was living in an environment that had no electricity, was unclean and did not provide her with even the most basic needs. She was eventually removed from her families care by social services and spent 3 and a half years in the system. Over the course of 7 years she lived in over 16 different homes, including foster homes and group homes, with family and strangers, and in shelters and on the street.

At the age of 17, Madeline, with the help of her guidance counsellor at school, connected with the All-in-for-Youth program at Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary where she met her Success Coach, Vanessa. Madeline’s Success Coach became instrumental in her life by providing her with the reinforcement and encouragement that she needed to begin believing in herself and to help build her

confidence. It’s just that confidence piece, knowing that there is somebody that thinks I can do it. That could be the difference between being successful and not being successful. Madeline’s ambition, drive and her desire to live the life she wants, keeps her challenging her own limitations to achieve her goals.

Madeline’s All-in-for-Youth Success Coach taught her many life lessons; My Success Coach is maybe one of the first people or even the first person, that I have a relationship with that hasn’t ended, so that was a huge life lesson for me-relationships like that can happen. My experience with relationships was that they either ended poorly or people leave from my life.

With the support of those closest to her, Madeline is pursuing the future she imagines for herself, a future that is bright, happy and full of exciting milestones ahead. Despite her past and her occasional struggles with anorexia, anxiety, depression and PTSD, she has discovered things that bring her joy. I can finally live the life I want. Madeline’s natural passion to help others who have shared the same experiences has allowed her to develop her own initiative, become a listening ear to those who need it and embrace her story. "This is what makes me, me."

Thanks to your support and compassion, Madeline knows that she is worthy and loved.
