jb XC M,N Father’s Findings Every so often I am asked the question whether a Catholic may receive communion in a Protestant church, or whether a non-Catholic may receive communion in a Catholic Church. It is important that we all be aware what is proper for reception of communion, both by Catholics in non-Catholic churches and by non-Catholics in Catholic churches. And since it is not possible for the priest or Eucharistic minister to know whether each person receiving communion is Catholic, as good stewards of our church we must all take responsibility for instructing our non-Catholic friends and visitors about reception of communion in the church. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) encourages frequent reception of communion by all Catholics who are properly disposed, meaning not being in grave (mortal) sin and fasting for one hour. At this point in time the same invitation cannot be made to non- Catholics, though I do believe (hope) that in my lifetime some non-Catholic denominations will join us in receiving the Eucharist. While the USCCB encourages non-Catholics to participate with Catholics at Mass, the divisions between Catholics and non-Catholics do not allow non- Catholics to receive communion under normal circumstances. The official statement acknowledges special situations, which should be discussed individually with a priest. The official statement can be found on the inside of the front cover of the missalette. The restriction is not that Catholics are better than non-Catholics, but that non-Catholics do not believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist in the same way, even those whose beliefs are closest to Catholic belief. While in the seminary I discussed the disposal of a consecrated host that had been dropped and found lying on the ground with a Lutheran seminarian (the Lutheran understanding of the Eucharist is about as close to the Catholic understanding as there is). He said that it is proper to throw it in the trash because the Eucharist itself is not the body and blood of Jesus…Jesus is only present in the Eucharist as he is present with those who are gathered together in his name. Neither Lutherans, nor any non- Catholic denomination that I know of at this time, believe that the bread and wine truly become the body and blood of Jesus (transubstantiation) that is the Catholic teaching, but at most the bread and wine contain the body and blood of Christ (consubstantiation). The difference seems subtle, but it is significant. For the same reason, Catholics are not allowed to receive communion in non-Catholic churches, even when allowed to do so by that church. Receiving communion in any church means that you are in communion with all of the beliefs of that church. As my example above indicates, though many of our beliefs might be the same, the non-Catholic’s belief in the Eucharist is not the same as the Catholic Church. Therefore, until the differences between Catholics and Protestants are healed, a real "intercommunion" cannot take place. Out of respect for the differences in belief, a Catholic is obliged to refrain from receiving communion at a Protestant service, and likewise, Protestants at a Catholic Mass. While the policy of the Catholic church does not allow reception of communion by non- Catholics, priests and Eucharistic ministers are instructed not to deny the Eucharist to someone coming up to receive communion, except in cases of public scandal. When it is known that a person receives communion improperly the priest or lay Catholic is to approach the person outside of Mass to explain the teachings of the church. If each of us performs his or her role as a baptized Catholic, the reception of communion by non-Catholics should be rare. Each of us, through our baptism, has a priestly role in the church. That role includes the responsibility to instruct our non-Catholic friends who participate in our Catholic liturgies about their roles in our liturgies. It is not proper that they receive communion, but it is proper, if they so choose, to come up for a blessing. Simply instruct any person who wishes to receive a blessing at communion to cross their arms over their chest as a sign to the priest or Eucharistic minister for a blessing. Fr. jb XC M,N Father’s Findings Every so often I am asked the question whether a Catholic may receive communion in a

Protestant church, or whether a non-Catholic may receive communion in a Catholic Church.

At this point in time the same invitation cannot be made to non-Catholics, though I do believe (hope) that in my lifetime some non-Catholic denominations will join us in receiving the Eucharist. While the USCCB encourages non-Catholics to participate with Catholics at Mass, the divisions between Catholics and non-Catholics do not allow non-Catholics to receive communion under normal circumstances. Neither Lutherans, nor any non-Catholic denomination that I know of at this time, believe that the bread and wine truly become the body and blood of Jesus (transubstantiation) that is the Catholic teaching, but at most the bread and wine contain the body and blood of Christ (consubstantiation).

While the policy of the Catholic church does not allow reception of communion by non-Catholics, priests and Eucharistic ministers are instructed not to deny the Eucharist to someone coming up to receive communion, except in cases of public scandal. When it is known that a person receives communion improperly the priest or lay Catholic is to approach the person outside of Mass to explain the teachings of the church. From Mrs. Pat’s Desk

Now that the Carnival is over, I want to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to:

The Carnival Committee for all the extra hours of planning and time spent at school to make this event a success.

A sincere thank you to all families, parishioners & RE students, who gave of their time to help out with games, setting up or cleaning up, donating of items for the classroom baskets and games, and selling raffle tickets.

Thank you to the Parish for your support and help in making this event a success. Success is determined not only by the money at the end but by the smiles I saw throughout the day. When little kids share “look what I won”, these are the memories that mean more than anything.

In making this event a success, you are setting the example of giving your time, talents and treasures to our / your child(ren). Once again, thank you for all you do to support our school, it is greatly appreciated.

Grade 2 :: Here’s What’s Happening

Because February was “I Love to Read” month and March is “National Reading” month, the 2nd grade had been enjoying listening to Dr. Seuss stories during snack time since the middle of February. We have even begun to choose our favorites, but we’re note finished reading all the ones we have yet, so those choices may change. In April, we’ll have a project to do in connection with that.

We are digging into grammar in English and have spent a great deal of time identifying nouns, verbs, adjectives, & adverbs to help us improve our writing.

In math, we have explored and worked with fractions and explored and worked with measurement of many types – distances, capacities, volumes, weights & areas.

The 3rd quarter of school has ended, but our learning in 2nd grade continues into this 4th and final quarter of school.
