P. Joachim Lepcha

Free Gift of Salvation

Blessing of God to Adam and Eve, was “to be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth.” (Gen. 1:28) They sinned, and the wages of sin are always liberal and, on the dot, ultimately there is suffering and death. Hence human nature became diseased, so diseased even minor pleasures are accompanied by minor pains. Then our Merciful God sent his only son, Jesus Christ, to restore men from their original sin, from any kind of suffering, and ultimately from the sin of death. When Jesus was healing and preaching, there was no medical science or the ability to treat so many illnesses like this modern age. However, Jesus’ concern was of a more serious illness; He could heal the sick as much as he could, but His healings were primarily for the purpose of preparing the people to listen to his word and to ultimately receive the spiritual healing of the forgiveness of their sins.

In Jesus’ time, a leper had to wear torn clothes, disheveled hair and he or she had to cry out saying “unclean, unclean!” to warn the people to clear out of the way and avoid contracting the disease. The worse part was living apart from human society. The leper recognized Jesus as the Savior, he prayed, and Jesus answered his prayer by healing him, because Jesus is always ready to heal, “I do will. Be healed!” (Mk. 1:41.) Jesus did not heal only the leprosy, but the sin of out casting the person. He brought him total healing and he rejoined the community. When Jesus went about healing the people, he aimed at healing their souls as well. His good news was to preach the ‘Good News’ of salvation and to heal the sick. He wants to heal us in order to save us and he wants to save us in order to heal us.

One occasion, as Jesus was healing and preaching, people “ran about the whole neighborhood to bring sick peo-ple.” (Mk. 6:55) “And wherever He came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and im-plored him that they might touch even the fringe of His gar-ment. And as many as touched it, were made well.” (Mk. 6:56)

Today, Jesus, though he is not physically present with us, has mandated his healing power to the Church through the Sacraments and prayers. Yes, physical healing is as important as spiritual healing, but the spiritual healing of the forgiveness of our sins is of infinitely greater value because it will affect our souls for all eternity. Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, greater healing is available to us all and we are invited to touch the tassel of His cloak of mercy and compassion and we will be spiritually healed. We are also invited to have a deeper desire to seek out Jesus in the busy crowded world and be healed, because Jesus said, “I do will. Be healed!” (Mk. 1:41) How many times we ignore this priceless gift of God’s mercy and healing offered to us freely?

Another important Sacrament that heals a sick person is the Sacrament of the Anointing of the sick. “Is any-one among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone in good spirit? He should sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the Church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:13-15)

Tips to handle teen dating

Most teenagers are eager to date, but parents may be less eager to reach that milestone. Preparing yourself — and your teenager — for smart, safe dating is key. As a family, set rules, and enforce them. Discuss who they can see, what activities are allowed or forbidden, how late they can stay out. Make sure your teenager is clear on how to handle himself or herself in tough situations, and that they have an “out” if they need one in you or another trusted adult. Honesty and specificity will make these conversations more impactful, and more likely to stick with your teen. For more tips on handling teen dating, read the VIRTUS article “Preparing for the Day Your Teen Starts Dating” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/. Usted Sabia?

World Marriage Day To have, to hold, to honor

On this World Marriage Day, we thank our heavenly Father for the gift and blessing of marriage and the family. As we strive to live our particular vocations and respond to the Lord’s grace in our lives, let’s also consider how we might dedicate renewed prayer and attention to marriage and the family. As a start, here are possible areas we might consider:

First, we begin with prayer: Let’s remember to pray with and for marriages and families throughout our nation: for marriages in crisis, for families struggling with unemployment, for broken or wounded family relationships.

Second, let us reclaim Sunday as the Lord’s Day, a day of rest when we can focus on being together as a family. The celebration of Holy Mass together is the first essential way to honor this day. But is there something more the Lord is inviting us to when we go back home? Set aside some time to pray a decade of the rosary, enjoy the outdoors together, play ball, eat dinner together, have a game night!

And third, let us remember that the Church is the family of God and a family of families. As a family, how can we share Christ with other married couples and families? Do we have any friends and family members who are struggling in their marriage, alone during this time of isolation, or particularly afflicted by this pandemic? When was the last time we checked on our elderly neighbors? Is there someone in the parish that we haven’t seen in a while? How can we – as a family – reach out to those who are in need?
