Jesus responded by teaching his disciples the Lords Prayer. (Luke 11:2-4, Matt. 9-13) Not only is the Lords Prayer a great prayer (its actually the most perfect prayer of all time), but it also provides guidelines and direction for our own prayers. By praying Our Father who art in heaven, Jesus was inviting us to approach God as dear children approach their dear father. Because Jesus has taken away our sin and made us Gods children, we can talk to God boldly, frankly, and joyfully. Whats more, the petitions in the Lords Prayer show us that we can and should pray for material things (daily bread, house, home, car), but that spiritual blessings are to be our foremost concern (honoring Gods name, doing Gods will on earth, forgiving others as we have been forgiven, and avoiding tempting situations). Prayer is an awesome privilege, but it also takes discipline and concentration. Thats why we need the guidelines and examples of the Lords Prayer. And thats why Pastor Demski and I decided to do a special sermon series on the Lords Prayer this summer. Starting on the weekend of June 15-16 (FathersDay and Trinity Sunday), the sermons at Immanuel will focus on prayer and what Jesus taught us in the Lords Prayer. Well learn that prayer isnt a way to control God, but a way for God to settle us and clarify His will for our lives. As we consider Gods Word in prayer, God has a way of making His Word and will clear to us. He refreshes us as we bring our joys, sorrows, concerns, thanks and praise before his throne of grace. During our 8-week series, Pastor Demski and I will talk about the introduction in the Lords Prayer and then take a look at each of the seven petitions separately. Im sure this series will be enlightening and a lot of fun. Some people believe that answered prayer makes you a prayer warrior. If you pray and the answer to your prayer is almost always yes, that makes you a prayer warrior. Your prayers are effective. I dont believe that. Prayer warriors are people who pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17), who go to the Lord in prayer with every concern and joyful experience. When they experience a hardship or a blessing, the first thing they do is turn to the Lord and say, Lord, help me! Lord, thank you for this blessing!Prayer warriors are people who prayerfully consider and meditate on Gods Word, seeking Gods meaning and application for their lives. So join us as we hear and learn about the Lords Prayer this summer—and be a prayer warrior! Love in Christ, Not only is the Lords Prayer a great prayer (its actually the most perfect prayer of all time), but it also provides guidelines and direction for our own prayers. From Our Administrative Pastor…

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Immanuel, “Lord, teach us to pray.” (Luke 11:1) That’s what one of Jesus’ disciples requested after Jesus finished praying one day. Jesus responded by teaching his disciples the Lord’s Prayer. (Luke 11:2-4, Matt. 9-13) Not only is the Lord’s Prayer a great prayer (it’s actually the most perfect prayer of all time), but it also provides guidelines and direction for our own prayers. By praying Our Father who art in heaven, Jesus was inviting us to approach God as dear children approach their dear father. Because Jesus has taken away our sin and made us God’s children, we can talk to God boldly, frankly, and joyfully. What’s more, the petitions in the Lord’s Prayer show us that we can and should pray for material things (daily bread, house, home, car), but that spiritual blessings are to be our foremost concern (honoring God’s name, doing God’s will on earth, forgiving others as we have been forgiven, and avoiding tempting situations). Prayer is an awesome privilege, but it also takes discipline and concentration. That’s why we need the guidelines and examples of the Lord’s Prayer.

And that’s why Pastor Demski and I decided to do a special sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer this summer. Starting on the weekend of June 15-16 (Fathers’ Day and Trinity Sunday), the sermons at Immanuel will focus on prayer and what Jesus taught us in the Lord’s Prayer. We’ll learn that prayer isn’t a way to control

God, but a way for God to settle us and clarify His will for our lives. As we consider God’s Word in prayer, God has a way of making His Word and will clear to us. He refreshes us as we bring our joys, sorrows, concerns, thanks and praise before his throne of grace. During our 8-week series, Pastor Demski and I will talk about the introduction in the Lord’s Prayer and then take a look at each of the seven petitions separately. I’m sure this series will be enlightening and a lot of fun. Some people believe that answered prayer makes you a prayer warrior. If you pray and the answer to your prayer is almost always “yes,” that makes you a prayer warrior. Your prayers are effective. I don’t believe that. Prayer warriors are people who “pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17), who go to the Lord in prayer with every concern and joyful experience. When they experience a hardship or a blessing, the first thing they do is turn to the Lord and say, “Lord, help me! Lord, thank you for this blessing!” Prayer warriors are people who prayerfully consider and meditate on God’s Word, seeking God’s meaning and application for their lives. So join us as we hear and learn about the Lord’s Prayer this summer—and be a prayer warrior! Love in Christ,

Not only is the Lord’s Prayer a great prayer (it’s actually

the most perfect prayer of all time), but it also provides

guidelines and direction for our own prayers.

We’ll learn that prayer isn’t a way to control God, but a way for God to settle us and clarify His will for our lives.

I had a painful experience a couple of days ago. I was talking to a group of college-age Lutherans and was presented - a couple of times - with this question as we discussed the basics of the Christian faith: “Should I get re-baptized since I didn’t really mean it when I was baptized as a child?” Maybe that didn’t hit you in the gut as it hit me when I was being asked that question. Here’s what they’re actually asking: “I know that Jesus said he saved me and stuff, but what all do I have to do now to ACTUALLY be saved and how do I know if I ACTUALLY am saved?” That’s a painful question to hear. There are a couple of newsletters worth of explanation regarding the religious landscape of America that would help explain why this question is so prevalent and sneaks into Christ’s church, but at the root of it all is self-justification. At the root of it all is our attempt to earn salvation rather than to receive God’s gift freely. This comes in the form of many questions: “What do I have to do? How do I have to feel?” “My emotional experience wasn’t as great as that other person… am I actually saved?” “I haven’t started a non-profit organization for orphans in the Middle East...have I done enough to be saved?” And to our point here, “I didn’t do anything in my baptism...so what do I need to do now?” Of course, these questions aren’t only found in young Christians. Every generation deals with their own flavor of this sin of idolatry even if they don’t realize it. The good news is that in the lavish washing away of your sins, forgiveness was freely given to you in your baptism. You are now free to joyfully live for others and serve the Lord with peace rather than a burdened conscience. And when you fail to love God and others, when you confess your sins and hear the truth of God’s Word, you receive grace upon grace. The Gospel of Christ that we hold onto tells you that whether you did something for the right reason or the wrong reason, whether you really felt good about what you did or not, Christ forgives you as you live in faith! When we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive. Whether you feel like it’s the case or not, He gives you faith to trust His promises. Let’s proclaim this good news with passion and excitement. What a joy it is to tell someone who is worried about their faith and eternal life that Christ has paid the price. What a joy it is to tell someone that they can know that Christ died for them because He washed them clean in baptism! We aren’t saved by works of the law, but by grace through faith in God’s promises. How amazing is that? Share this news with others. Get this good news ingrained in yourself and in your family so that you and they can be the ones sharing the good news rather than doubting it.

How do you get God’s Word ingrained in you? By spending time in Scripture, praying, reflecting on and praying through the catechism so that the very basics of our Christian faith are in your heart and mind to be accessed in any situation in life, and by gathering every week with the saints at Immanuel to hear God’s Word and receive His gifts of Word and Sacrament. Christ gives you life in His name! He is with you always! Praise be to God! Christ is Risen! Blessings on your day!

From Our Associate Pastor… “Ask the Pastor”

A Note from Our Music Director... Vacation thoughts....thinking ahead!

Yes, the 2018/19 Music Season has come to an end, but plans for the 2019/20 Season are underway. I am asking that during the summer, you might take some time to think about joining Immanuel's Music Ministry this fall.

Elden and Taryn Niemeyer, co-directors of Immanubells, are looking for additional youth to join them in ringing praises to God. If any youth have an interest in knowing what is expected of them during handbell practices and performances, the Niemeyers would welcome any questions or concerns. (939.7982)

The Adult Choir (high school age and up) along with the Agape Ringers (high school age and up) would also invite additional members to join these groups in proclaiming His Word through singing/ringing.

Yes, there is commitment involved, and yet, there is much joy and satisfaction in sharing practice and performance times together in serving our Lord and Savior.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or explanations needed in response to my request of taking time to think about becoming involved in the music program. Check out "serving" at Immanuel: Music on the website.

Blessings to you this summer.....see you in the fall.

An Update from Our Missionary Partners

Funke News: Answered Prayers We are so thankful to all of you who pray for us and for our ministry so consistently. Sometimes it feels like God is slow to answer, and then some months we see so clearly how God is at work. This was one of those months :-)

Exciting News! We are thrilled to share that after much prayer and many meaningful conversations, Cheryl Kruckemeyer feels that God is calling her to serve here in Mwadui! Praise the Lord! Cheryl is a member of one of our partner churches, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fort Worth, TX. She is currently an English teacher at Newman International Academy in Arlington. In the past, she has also homeschooled missionary kids in Tokmok, Krygyzstan, led Vacation Bible School in Uganda, and taught ESL classes both in Krgyzstan and at Grace Community Church in Arlington. She likewise brings with her a wealth of experience in the business world as she has held leadership positions in numerous companies over the course of her career, including serving as Senior Vice President of Esend and President and Founder of Healthcare Management Solution, Inc. Her resume is incredibly impressive, and we thank God for her heart to serve students internationally. Her next steps are to work through Global Lutheran Outreach’s orientation program and then come out to visit us May 25-June 5. We are so excited to meet her and to show her around our school and community! She will then return to the U.S. to begin her Support Discovery journey. If you are willing to host her at your church or small group, please let her know by

emailing her at [email protected]. She is eager to share about how God has led her to this moment and about her upcoming ministry. We pray that the funds will come together for her to begin Swahili language school this coming September or October. Please keep her in prayer during her trip this month and in the months ahead as she prepares for this ministry. As we mentioned in our previous newsletter, we would love for Cheryl to have missionary colleagues, so we are continuing to recruit new missionaries in the hopes of building up a team here in Mwadui and Shinyanga. Amber and Austin Reed will be concluding their time in Tanzania in June, so their car and furniture will likely be available to future missionaries. Do you know any teachers (preschool, elementary, or high school), nurses, doctors, chaplains, social workers, DCEs, deaconesses, computer gurus, agricultural specialists, or childcare workers who might be interested in serving in Tanzania? We have prepared one-page descriptions of these opportunities that you can download at www.globallutheranoutreach.com/blog/funke. If you know of someone who might be interested or have other ideas for how we can get the word out, please email us at [email protected]. School During the first two weeks of April, Eric helped register all the students for national exams, taught, typed up midterm exams, and prepared grades before the Easter break. Linda taught a Guidance and Counseling class with the help of her new aide Deaconess Esther Levison, who will be taking over Linda’s class when we leave next year. They taught about spiritual warfare and how to grow closer to Jesus. The students greatly enjoyed the part about the armor of God where Linda dressed up a student in homemade armor. Before the two-week break, we also showed The Jesus Film to all the students in Swahili. The school closed on April 12 and then reopened April 21. This is just a part of the May 2019 newsletter written by Eric & Linda Funke on May 3, 2019. Would you like to be added to their email list? If so, email Eric & Linda at [email protected] and let them know.

Vacation Bible School June 17-21, 2019 9-11:45 am Co-directed by Veronica Demski & Lisa Clamors Immanuel, Waterloo, and Holy Cross, Wartburg, will be joining forces again for a fun-filled week on a Miraculous Mission!

VBS Safety Policy: To ensure the safety of our children, parents will be asked to come into the church for pick up at the conclusion of VBS daily. You will find your children with their class in their pew. Preschool classes will have a sign in/out sheet. For older classes, we ask that you verbally communicate with their teacher when picking up your child. Children will not be released to older siblings. Thank you for helping us keep your children safe! Note to parents, guardians and friends of VBS: There is no fee for VBS. Each student receives a t-shirt (which costs us about $5) and each family will receive a music CD (about $5). If you would like to underwrite VBS costs, you may make donations to Immanuel Lutheran Church and write VBS in the memo space. There will also be an of-fering to support a local mission during our VBS week, and you may help us with that mission. If you would like to volunteer in other ways, please fill out the form below.
