• Mexico gave Stephen Austin permission to lead American settlers into Texas.

• Hoped the Americans would help develop the area & control Indian attacks.

• Mexicans and Americans begin to clash over cultural differences & the issue of slavery (Mex. Against it)

• Santa Anna gained power in 1833 and ruled Mexico as a military dictator.

Texas Fights for Independence • Austin petitioned Mexico for self­government over Texas

• Mexico refused, Austin believes that war is the only option.

• A group of about 200 Texans fought Santa Anna at the Alamo and lost.  They were fighting for Texan independence.
