    Fne new feature introduced by GSR8 is the Improved Timeslot Sharing (ITS) that allows

    "G#RS to be supported by $T%& in double density mode without introduction of newhardware

    ("( -vervie

    In GSR9 (software release *9+2), /otorola introduced "nhanced G#RS ("G#RS*) feature toincrease pacet data throughput by adopting new /odulation and $oding Schemes (/$S)Bowever, as shown in igure **, in GSR9 (software release *9+2, *92) "G#RS featurewas only supported by $T%& woring in Single =ensity /ode (S=/) $onse:uently tosupport "G#RS, the amount of timeslots per $T%& is constrained to eight which is only halfof $T%& capacity in ==/

    Improved Timeslot Sharing feature introduced with GSR8 aims to increase the number oftimeslots per $T%& to more than eight, even if "G#RS is in service !ith ITS feature, $T%&in ==/ can support GS/6G#RS traffic on paired timeslots in two carriers as before/eanwhile "G#RS traffic can be served by the same ==/ $T%&, however it is limited toone of the two paired carriers, which is similar to the S=/ $T%& prior to the introduction ofITS This improved timeslot sharing is illustrated in igure *& 'fter introduction of ITS, thedouble density for GS/6G#RS and the support of "G#RS are well combined in same $T%&

    It is in three possible situations that the $entral 'uthority ($') process in >SS S! performsthe =RI RT mapping

    =uring site initialisation, RT in order of + >$$B, + non>$$B, non+ >$$B

    and non+ non>$$B are assigned to =RI The operator preferred =RI RTmapping is usually followed by $', e;cept that unassigned >$$B RT may preemptoperator preferred =RI RT association, as it has to be assigned to bring the cellinto service !hen operator does not prefer specific =RI RT association, $' willmap RT to =RI automatically !hen + RT, either >$$B or non>$$B, is to be

    assigned, the S=/ =RI is always considered prior to ==/ =RI

    !hen new =RI comes into service (I7S), the unassigned RT get the opportunity to

    be mapped to the new =RI

    !hen woring =RI goes out of service (FFS), the RT reassignment taes place

    The enhancement introduced by ITS is the RT mapping to ==/ =RI, which will be furtherdiscussed below To simplify further discussion, the two carriers of $T%& in ==/ are namedas $arrier ' and $arrier > 'fter the introduction of ITS, the "G#RS timeslot can beconfigured not only on $T%& in S=/, but also on $arrier ' of $T%& in ==/ In the later

    case, the corresponding timeslots in $arrier > will be blaned out, namely they are unusableThese timeslots are regarded as FFS in /an/achine Interface (//I) and can not be

    The RT can be divided into two categories >$$B RT and non>$$B RT >oth of themcan be either + or non+, as far as "G#RS capability is concerned 'll the valid RTpair combinations on one ==/ $T%& are summariCed in Table ** In brief, the $arrier ' canbe mapped to all types of RT, when the $arrier > only contains non+ non>$$B RT/oreover, given that $arrier ' is configured as non+ non>$$B, $arrier > can bemapped to non+ >$$B RT

    "G#RS capable timeslots can be stolen for GS/ traffic In such a case, its counterparttimeslots in $arrier > can be activated for GS/6G#RS !hen the "G#RS capable timeslot isreleased by the GS/ traffic, if the reconfigEthreshEidleEtch is e;ceeded, the stolen timesloton $arrier ' is resumed to "G#RS #=$B from GS/6G#RS, meanwhile the timeslot in$arrier > will be blaned out again If $arrier > timeslot is blaned out from >usy%nbloced(>%) states, an intracell handover is triggered to avoid a dropped call In case there is no freetimeslot to handover to, the GS/ call remainson that timeslot and the timeslot on carrier 'remains as a T$B until the call finishes or a handover timeslot becomes free
