Higher ApprenticeshipsResponding to the higher-level skills needed by employers, Higher Apprenticeships are specifically designed as the next progression step, usually after your A-Levels or if you have completed a Level 2 or 3 Apprenticeship. They incorporate more advanced skills and qualifications - some even to degree or Masters level. They offer clear progression paths to allow you to reach the highest levels.

Progression We work with employers to offer a range of progression routes that include full professional qualifications and even degrees – so you can reach the top of your career.

For example:

Degree ApprenticeshipsSome apprenticeships now incorporate an undergraduate degree. Each apprenticeship programme gives you the opportunity to benefit from an exciting new world of work and study. Degree Apprenticeships are available from BPP University.

Hear from our apprentices

Securing my apprenticeship was a challenging process. It was much more competitive than applying for university. However, for me knowing that I was applying for a scheme which really was looking for the best students, was really reassuring.

My apprenticeship is fantastic – I’m given a lot of responsibility. I’m based in BT Group’s Bristol finance centre where my job role includes looking after BT UK’s fixed assets and capital expenditure, overseeing financial processes and producing asset reports in construction across the business. I really do enjoy all the responsibility that is given to me as an apprentice, I’m certainly not making tea!

It’s a challenging but amazing experience.I really have enjoyed being thrown into the deep end, this has given me the opportunity to really push myself. It’s hard to manage exams and workload, but the support I receive from my employer and BPP is excellent and I’m incredibly grateful for that.

I plan on staying with BT Group. I absolutely love the company and my goal is to work my way up and move around within the business as I continue to study for my management accountancy qualifications as part of my apprenticeship.

After my A-Levels I wanted to challenge myself and get out into the ‘real world’ as soon as possible. The careers advice at college was geared towards university and there was very little information, if any, about the apprenticeship route. I decided to do my own research and the more I looked the more attractive it became. I could go straight in to the working world, earn a salary and work towards a professional qualification that would help me progress in my career - what could be better?

I would have moved away to university had I chosen that route anyway. Which meant I wasn’t fazed by the relocation to Bournemouth. Having the fantastic opportunity to start your career at J.P. Morgan isn’t something that comes along every day – and there was no way I was missing out.

I have made friends for life over the past 18 months and don’t regret my decision one bit. There are so many chances to get involved in the social side of things at work and I am actually living with one of the other apprentices here at J.P. Morgan. Even though I am over 250 miles away from home, the transport links mean that I can see my friends and family within a few hours.

I have been given so many opportunities which I would never have had the chance to do at university. I have met the CEO of J.P. Morgan, spent time with MPs and taken part in the annual Round the Island Race, a one-day yacht race around the Isle of Wight.

I have found the apprenticeship route to be such a fantastic step onto the career ladder.

“Doing a degree-level qualification, I’m three years ahead of the curve.”Alistair, 22, Financial Services Analyst at BT Group, Level 4 CIMA Higher Apprentice

“I’ve relocated over 250 miles from home to work with one of the world’s biggest investment companies and I’m loving every minute.” Jake, 19, Level 3 Investment Operations (CISI) Apprentice at J.P. Morgan

“We find our apprentices to be on a par with our graduates, their willingness to learn and lack of pre-conceptions means they quickly adapt.”

Kate Mooney, BT Group Learning Operations

Page 9: in Business, Accountancy, Finance and Law - Amazon S3 · in Business, Accountancy, Finance and Law ... Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship ... business, accountancy, finance,

I feel extremely proud of how far I have come since I started my apprenticeship. Currently I am a finance assistant working with one of the most recognised global companies at the age of 20, I have completed a Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship and CIMA certificate qualification and am on track to becoming a fully qualified Chartered Management Accountant. I am working towards finishing the rest of the CIMA qualification, which is something someone would do after graduating from university, so I feel I’m already ahead of the curve.

I was offered a place at university to study law. I received good A-Level grades in business, history and economics and an offer to study law at university. At the time, I thought following this route was the ‘right thing’ to do, but I was so pleased to find my apprenticeship, it was the best decision I have made.

An apprenticeship shouldn’t be taken as an ‘easy option’, it is a really competitive process. There were 400 applicants for just five apprenticeship roles with Experian - that’s a lot of competition! When I was selected, I was so excited to start working and to make the most of the opportunity. I joined with four other apprentices and we have all become close friends.

My overall experience has been amazing. Not only have I started my career in accountancy with a top firm, I have had other fantastic experiences as a result, included attending events and photo shoots in Manchester and London to promote apprenticeships to others. Having a salary, I’ve also been able to buy myself a car, go on holiday all without asking my parents for any financial help. I can honestly say it has given me a sense of independence.

I would absolutely recommend an apprenticeship to my peers. Since starting the programme I have been given so many opportunities to speak to students at schools and colleges, the reaction I receive is fantastic and I really feel as though my experience as an apprentice helps students decide what to do with their future.

I visited five universities and weighed up all the pros and cons of both university and an apprenticeship.I came to the conclusion that the apprenticeship route was the best option for me – I could qualify as a CIMA accountant in five years, rather than the six years it would take if I went to university first.

I can’t believe how far I have come and how much I have learnt in one year. Well on my way to completing the Certificate level of my CIMA qualification, I’ve also had the chance to travel to different offices in the UK and work with so many different people. It’s been fantastic, hard work but definitely worth it.

If I had to make the choice again, I would definitely choose the apprenticeship route.I don’t think people should follow the norm – it’s important to be yourself and know what you want to get out of your career. I feel like I now have a massive advantage over my peers who have gone to university, as more and more employers now look at your work experience before they offer you a job.

BPP really helped me find my apprenticeship role. They offered a huge amount of support, from advice on the particular role to interview preparation and CV tips. The Recruitment Managers were on hand to answer any of my questions throughout the process.

My advice to anyone thinking about an apprenticeship. To help secure an apprenticeship role get as much experience as possible – even if it is just joining a local club and getting involved in the organisational aspects of it to demonstrate your skills and abilities at the interview.
