Moulton Park Business Centre – the course location

Course Administration information

Course registration on day 1 of the course is 08:45 and the course starts at

09:00 each day. Each course ends around 16:00 to 16:30. We have a break

mid morning and mid afternoon for refreshments and lunch is taken between

12:00 and 12:30 at traditional country pubs which are 5 minutes drive away in

picturesque villages (lunch is provided as part of the course). We often finish

slightly earlier on the final day of the course so that delegates who are

travelling a distance have a reasonable return journey.

We do not have a dress code as we want delegates to feel comfortable and

relaxed. We provide coffee, tea, squash, filtered water, biscuits and sweets in

the training room. There is a café on the ground floor which serves breakfasts,

snacks, lunches etc.

Car Parking

The car park is at the front of the Moulton Park Business Centre building. You

will need to display a car park permit on your car’s dashboard, these are

handed out by reception on arrival.

If you need to contact a delegate on a training course, then phone the

Photos of the Northampton shoe trail, a new series of 12 sculptures

around the town centre, depicting the towns shoe history.

Northampton – a brief glimpse through time

The earliest evidence of a human settlement in Northampton was around

4000 BC at Briar Hill. Around 43AD the Romans occupied the area which they

then abandoned and the invading Saxons, then Danes came and went (and

unfortunately left us with the Carlsberg brewery!).

Renowned for its long standing royal connections, pivotal historic events

punctuate the county’s history. In the War of the Roses, Henry VI was

captured in the Battle of Northampton. Two monuments at Naseby mark the

site of the battle in which Charles I was defeated, a turning point in the

English Civil War.

Northampton survived two devastating fires in 1516 and 1675 and lost nearly

half its population to the Black Death. Nevertheless, the town recovered and

continued to grow and prosper. From the 17th century until the 19th century

the chief industry of Northampton was shoe-making, along with brewing in the

1800s (a comfortable walk home after a few drinks!). The Albion brewery has

recently opened in the town centre brewing Phipps beer preserving a tradition

over 200 years old (Phipps IPA is highly recommended!).

In 1809 Spencer Perceval became the only MP for Northampton ever to be

elected prime minister, which he held until 1812 when he became the only UK

prime minister ever to be assassinated!

Northampton was a revolutionary and free-thinking town often at odds with the

church and the state, shoemakers in particular being known for their strong

non-conformist and radical traditions. A protestant shoemaker was burned at

the stake because of his beliefs during the reign of the Catholic

Queen Mary. In the 1600’s men and women were executed for witchcraft. In

the late 1700’s a public execution of the notorious Culworth gang for robberies

was watched by an estimated 10,000 people.

Page 12: In February 2017 we moved address just around the · 2019. 12. 9. · Birmingham International airport offers a direct rail service to Northampton, with an hourly train service. Journey

The first Earl of Northampton, Simon de Senlis, built a fine Norman Castle

which became very popular and important to both royalty and heads of state.

This resulted in Northampton becoming the Capital of England for 200 years,

and the castle became the Seat of Parliament. It was the scene of many

sieges and was chosen for the trial of Thomas a Becket, Archbishop of

Canterbury in 1164.The castle was not destroyed in the Great Fire of 1675

since it had already been pulled down by Charles II. Charles II was exiled to

France following the execution of Charles I. When he returned from exile, he

decided to reduce the status and power of the town as punishment for its

disloyalty during the English Civil War (The town turned against the monarch,

Charles I, in 1642 and sided with Cromwell. Their eventual reward was an

unpaid bill for the thousands of boots they had made for his army). He did this

in 1660 by tearing down the castle and its walls.

Strangely, following the Great Fire, it was also Charles II who arranged for the

town to receive enough money, timber and resources to rebuild All Saints

Church. Built in 1680, the church still dominates Northampton's town centre,

and carries a statue of Charles II above its portico. Interestingly, the statue

depicts Charles II dressed in a Roman toga, supposedly because the

townsfolk did not wish for the statue to be placed there. They were obliged to

display a statue, and this was their way of expressing their annoyance.

In more recent times Princess Diana spent her childhood here at Althorp

House where she was laid to rest in 1997. The 1960s saw a huge influx into

the town thanks to a massive program of public housing. The town now is a

thriving place for business, one reason being its central location.

On a sporting front the town has a football, rugby and cricket team. The

football team “The Cobblers” play at Sixfields Stadium in Division 2. The

rugby team, Northampton Saints, play at Franklins Gardens in the

Premiership and were European Champions in 2000, Aviva Premiership

champions and Amlin Cup winners in 2014 and the inaugural Premiership

Rugby Cup winners in 2019. The cricket team, below, were promoted to

Division 1 of the County Championship in 2019.
