Très bien, bien hecho, goed gedaan, you all got into the spirit of European
Day of Languages on Wednesday.
We had a Continental Café, kindly sponsored by Morrisons
Supermarket, in P Hall and you were all encouraged to find out about new
languages.
Using QR codes you used your iPads to uncover facts, tongue twisters, the
noises animals make in different languages and language idioms from
around the world.
Thank you for getting involved and joining it...gracias!
Merci to our Year 8 and Post 16 Language students who manned the Café.
High 5 Miss Blane Hernandez...the Café was a
great success!
Dos vasos de zumo de naranja por favor?
Tongue twisters are tricky at the best of times...but in Dutch...come on Mr Kehoe!

We welcomed Alex Corwin from the Ilkley Literature Festival into school on Wednesday. The Creative Writing and Book Club invited her in to find out about what the Ilkley Literature Festival has to offer this year. We were left with one small problem...with so much on offer we don’t know what to choose! Alex’s top picks this year are: Blake Remixed; Nine Lives; Sally Green and the Art of Being Normal. More information on the Festival can be found here.
Snap Happy! Year 10 Photography students are currently undertaking research visits to the tarn area of Ilkley Moor for their first GCSE unit 'Landscapes'.
Students work on location developing skills in photographic composition and the effective use of different viewpoints to explore a shot.

We are delighted to be involved with the Ilkley Art Trail this year. The event sees Ilkley transformed into a gallery between Wednesday 7th to Sunday 11th October and venues are open daily 10am to 5pm.
Six of our Year 13 students from last year will be exhibiting mixed media in 2 venues: Shoo Social Media Ltd, 137 Bolling Rd, LS29 8PN and Harrison Robinson Estate Agents, 126 Bolling Road, LS29 8PN.
Some of you may have been taught by Mr Gutch this year...his talents don’t stop at teaching Languages. Alongside his wife the couple are exhibiting their mobiles. Balance and harmony are key concepts in their work where they bend and shape wood to create a variety of forms which they then compose into mobiles, with each element suspended in perfect balance. You can find out more here:
Ilkley Art Trail 2015
So if you are around Ilkley during October why not
pop in to some of the venues and support
ex-students and Mr Gutch.
The gamut of artwork exhibited covers a huge range from photography, land and seascapes, glass and ceramics and screen printing, to jewellery, mobiles, textiles and oil paintings...something for everyone! We have both student and staff artwork included in this year’s Art Trail.

Climbing to Success We welcomed world record breaking climber Vanessa O’Brien into school on Friday 18th September. Vanessa is a British-American mountain climber, explorer, public speaker and former business executive who holds the 2015 Guinness World Record for climbing the Seven Summits in 295 days and The Explorers Grand Slam in 11 months. A Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Member of The Explorers Club, she climbed the highest mountain peak on each continent and also skied the last degree (60 nautical miles or 111 km) to the South Pole in the Antarctic.
As of March 2013, Vanessa became the fastest woman to climb the Seven Summits, in 10 months, one of only 54 to do so. In 2014, she carried the Explorers Club Flag #206 to Manaslu's summit as part of a research study investigating nocturnal hypoxic exposure on high-altitude mountaineering.
Vanessa talked to some of you about challenge and resilience, key qualities for both record breaking mountain climbing and doing your Personal Best at school and she even signed a copy of the Guinness Book of records for the Library. It was very apt that we hosted Vanessa last week, as it ties in nicely with Year 7 who are just starting their KS3 ‘mountain challenge’ in English. Vanessa was clearly impressed with you all and tweeted: Vanessa’s next challenge is to climb Chimborazo in Ecuador to bring awareness of Climate Change for 25zero.com.

School Photographs It’s not too late to order your school photo and if you missed it there is a chance for you to have yours taken on Friday 2nd October during Periods 3 and 4, sibling photos can also be taken during lunchtime.
Mr Rignall
Exam Timetables Exam timetables have now been uploaded to our school website. You can view them here.
Mr Baker Reach for the Top! Year 11 PE lessons look a little bit different this year. Alongside the usual options, students also had the chance to select sessions at Clip and Climb, the new climbing centre in Ilkley.
Climbing, as well as improving fitness, helps with agility, co-ordination, and confidence...and it wouldn’t be a PE lesson if there wasn’t an element of competition...with head to head sessions on the time trial wall! Looks great fun!

Triathlon Triumph! What a weekend it was for everyone who took part in the Ilkley Triathlon...and we are extremely proud to hear that some of our students...and staff, did incredibly well!
The competition was made up of 350 individual and 30 teams places; three people were needed for a team, meaning one person swam, one person then biked and the third one finished with the run. The course covered a distance of a 500m indoor swim, followed by a bike (3 x laps of a 4.8km circuit) and a 4.8km run (1 x lap of the same circuit).
Mrs Knowles had a storming race, finishing as first female home in a time of 1 hour and 5 minutes, closely followed by Lucy Jacques (12LCM), finishing 1st in her category, Mrs Marklew, Francesca Woodman (11CT) and Mrs Stageman.
The men’s races was equally well represented by ‘Team IGS’ with Alec Graham (12SSS) and Matthew Heap (13LR) finishing an impressive 4th and 5th respectively in their category. Mr Colman improved on his time last year coming home 57th in his category.
Four of the teams entered had members from IGS with the Mon Williams team setting an awesome pace for others to follow. The trio of Joanne (13EM) and Lucy Williams (13DK), and Ruaridh Mon-Williams (13PC) came second in the team category in an incredible time of 58 minutes and 38 seconds. Alongside Team Destructor and The Pluck Hares, our female PE teachers competed in a team. They entered the female team category and finished 6th...not bad Miss Vangenechten, Miss Haigh and our recently retired Mrs Ravensdale!

Blooming Marvellous! Well done to our Gardening Club who were singled out for praise by Ilkley in Bloom judges for their dedication and hard work they displayed as part of this year’s competition. Mrs Sanders and Mrs Walsh, who run the gardening club, attended a presentation tea alongside Peter Phillips (10LV) where they were presented with a cup and a certificate. We were thrilled to be involved in this year’s Ilkley in Bloom 2015 Competition where Ilkley received a silver gilt award in the town category. Yorkshire in Bloom is part of the RHS Britain in Bloom campaign that has been running for over 50 years and its aim is to encourage communities of all sizes to make positive and lasting improvements to their local environment. Congratulations to all of the Gardening Club who have done such a wonderful job this year in making the front of the school look so colourful.
Well done to our Year 7 rugby team who had their first taste of competition on Monday night in the initial round of the White Rose Series at South Craven School.
