Our Museum Store will soon feature merchandise bearing this logo. About “The Patroller”:

“The Patroller” was the name of the NAS Brunswick base newspaper, and in accordance with our mission to preserve the rich heritage of the former NAS Brunswick, we decided to name our quarterly newsletter eponymously to honor that publication. BNAM has a library of past editions of “The Patroller” and will regularly feature them on our Facebook page and in this newsletter. Reader contributions to “The Patroller” are most welcome; please send your articles to [email protected]. Our mission: The Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum was founded in 2009 as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Our mission is to preserve the rich heritage of NAS Brunswick (NASB) by honoring the tens of thousands of men and women who served here, educate the public about the history of maritime patrol aviation and NASB, and maintain a memorial for those NASB-based airmen who gave their lives in service to their country.

This, Too, Shall Pass

Dear friends of BNAM – we hope this edition of “The Patroller” finds that you are faring well amidst the challenges presented by COVID-19. While the infection rate is relatively low in the Mid-Coast Maine region, the necessary social distancing measures are taking their toll on the local economy. We are particularly empathetic with our friends in the restaurant, hospitality, and marine harvesting industries who have been hit hard by this crisis. BNAM is closed to the public in accordance with the Governor’s “Stay Healthy At Home” Executive Order, but the Board of Directors and staff continue to work virtually behind the scenes to achieve our vision of becoming a first-rate attraction in the Mid-Coast region. We recently selected our new logo and are working diligently on designing the interior layout of our new museum, guided by the professional services of the Paulus Design Group. Despite the cancellation of the Great State of Maine Air Show, we are still planning to host the 2020 NAS Brunswick Reunion during the weekend of 14-16 August and are pleased to announce that Admiral Bill Moran, USN (Ret.) has agreed to serve as the guest speaker for our Banquet on Saturday evening. Admiral Moran began his distinguished career as a naval aviator at NAS Brunswick while serving as a pilot with the “Golden Pelicans” of VP-44, and recently retired after serving as the 39th Vice Chief of Naval Operations. VP-8 and VP-23 are planning to host squadron reunions on the sidelines of the reunion, and we invite all other squadrons to do the same. The reunion will formally kick off at 4:00 p.m. on Friday with the dedication of our freshly renovated P-3 static display which has been painted in the

livery of LC-85 in honor of the eight members of VP-8 who perished in the mishap over Poland Spring, Maine in 1978. A full schedule of events can be found on page 23, and all events will feature food and beverage catering from Cook’s Lobster and Ale House and beer from our great partners at the Flight Deck Brewing Company. Registration is live at https://bnamuseum.org/events/, and registrants will receive a full refund if we are forced to cancel the reunion due to continued restrictions on public gatherings. The CARES Act of 2020 offers a silver lining in this crisis as it increases tax deductions for charitable contributions as follows:

- if you use the standard deduction and give up to $300 to charity in a year, you can add up to $300 to the standard deduction - bringing it to $12,400 per individual and $24,800 per couple. This is an above-the-line deduction, which has the added bonus of decreasing your adjusted gross income, so you could qualify for other tax breaks. Plus, this covers all of 2020 and the years to come.

- if you itemize, for 2020 you can now deduct 100% of your charitable contributions from your adjusted gross income (up from the previous 50% cap). If you have a business, the 10% limit has been increased to 25%.

As always, we recommend you consult with your tax advisor, and then please take advantage of this opportunity to increase your financial support to BNAM! KNHZ forever, Sean CAPT Sean Liedman, USN (Ret.) [email protected]

From the President

Rear Admiral Harold (Harry) G. Rich has answered his final call to duty. Born in Searsport, Maine on 2 January 1926, the youngest of four children to Irving P. and Loretta S. Rich, he passed away at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine on 20 January 2020. Following graduation from high school in 1943 he entered the Navy as an Apprentice Seaman and attended Dartmouth College under the Navy’s V-12 College Training Program. From there he attended the Navy Flight Training Program as a Naval Aviation Cadet. In June 1946 he received the coveted wings of gold of a Naval Aviator and was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy. His first operational assignment, from 1946 through 1949, was with Transport Squadron Eight (VR-8), homeported in Hawaii. During this tour he participated in the Berlin Airlift where he flew 127 missions in a six-month period for which he was awarded the Medal for Humane Action. During his illustrious thirty-five year career, he served in assignments of ever increasing importance and responsibility. In addition to VR-8, he served with Air Test Evaluation Squadron FOUR (VX-4), Airborne Early Warning Squadron TWO (VW-2), Patrol Squadron TWENTY THREE (VP-23) at Naval Air Station, Brunswick, Maine, and Patrol Squadron EIGHT (VP-8) where he served as the Executive Officer and eighteenth Commanding Officer. In addition, he was the Ordnance Officer aboard USS INTREPID (CVA-11) and the Operations Officer in USS WASP (CV-18). While serving aboard WASP, he participated in the recovery of the GEMINI 9 and GEMINI 12 spacecraft. His shore tours included Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, the Bureau of Naval Personnel (two tours) and Naval Air Station Bermuda where he was Commanding Officer and Commander, Fleet Air Bermuda. He also served as Chief Staff Officer of Fleet Air Wing THREE and Executive officer of Naval Air Station Brunswick, Maine. After Flag selection in 1973, Rear Admiral Rich served as Commander Patrol Wings Atlantic in Brunswick, Commander Iceland Defense Force, and Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Human Resource Management. As had been the case when he was Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Bermuda, during his tour as Commander Iceland Defense Force he was instrumental in developing and maintaining an outstanding relationship with the host country, a relationship that ensured our ability

to continue to operate from these two countries. Where diplomacy was required, Admiral Rich was especially well qualified. As the result of his superior statesmanship in Iceland, Admiral Rich was awarded the Grand Knight’s Cross with Star of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon by the government of Iceland. Admiral Rich was also awarded the Legion of Merit, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Navy Occupation Medal for Europe. His education, in addition to the V-12 Program at Dartmouth, included the Naval War College (class of 1959), the National War College (class of 1971), and Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees from the George Washington University. Following retirement from the Navy in 1978, he returned to Maine where he resided in Harpswell for over four decades and was active in civic affairs. He served as a member of the Brunswick Base Closure Task Force in both 1995 and 2005, was a Board Member of the Cundy’s Harbor Library for 15 years, and served for nearly 20 years as President and then as President Emeritus of the Friends of Peary’s Eagle Island. He was a founding member of the Board of Directors and Director Emeritus of the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum. He was a driving force in establishing the Museum and in ensuring the preservation of the Memorial Garden which is dedicated to the NAS Brunswick-based aircrewmen who gave their lives while flying missions to protect our country, and the Friendship Garden which is dedicated to the unique relationship between the Naval Air Station and the local communities. In 2018, a street at Brunswick Landing (formerly NAS Brunswick) was named in his honor. Rear Admiral Rich was highly respected both by his peers, superiors, and those who had the honor and privilege of serving under him. He was a servant leader and dedicated mentor who led by example with grace and good humor. In the words of John Paul Jones “It is no means enough that an Officer of the Navy should be a capable mariner. He must be that, of course, but also a great deal more. He should be as well a gentleman of liberal education, refined manners, punctilious courtesy and the finest sense of personal honor. He should be the soul of tact, patience, justice, firmness and charity. No meritorious act of a subordinate should escape his attention or be left to pass without its reward, even if the reward is only a word of approval. Conversely, he should not be blind to a single fault of any subordinate, though, at the same time, he should be quick and unfailing to distinguish error from malice, thoughtlessness from

incompetency, and well-meant shortcoming from heedless or stupid blunder. In one word, every commander should keep constantly before him the great truth, that to be well obeyed, he must be perfectly esteemed.” Rear Admiral Harry G. Rich was perfectly esteemed. He is survived by his three children, Sally Rich and her husband Adam Hewison of Harpswell, Maine, Michael Rich of Chuluota, Florida and Steven Rich and his wife Bonnie of Oveido, Florida, as well as by his two grandchildren, Kate Fergus and her husband Colin of Columbia, Maryland and Andrew Rich of Chuluota, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made in his name to: The Friends of Peary's Eagle Island, P.O. Box 43, Harpswell, ME 04079 or Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum, 179 Admiral Fitch Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011.

We are thrilled to report that after a two-year pursuit, a P-3C 2F142 Operational Flight Trainer (OFT) arrived at the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum on Tuesday, 5 May. John James (a Director of the Museum) masterfully navigated the administrative process of transfer of custody through a plethora of federal and state agencies after the demilitarization and disposition was completed by the U.S. Navy. The simulator will serve as one of the capstone exhibits for our museum, and now that we have it in our possession, the Paulus Design Group is integrating it into its design concept for our museum. It is easy to imagine the value of this exhibit in teaching children about the art and science of flight, and we are grateful to John James for his persistence and perseverance in making this exhibit a reality for BNAM.

We are publishing our first-ever financial report with an aim to communicate our financial needs and demonstrate that we are good stewards of your financial contributions to date. BNAM maintains two basic accounts – our Operating Fund, and our Capital Fund. Our Operating Fund pays for the operations and maintenance of the museum and its principal revenue sources are membership dues, a lease on our parking lot, and corporate sponsorships. Our Capital Fund is accruing money for the renovation of our museum, and its principal sources of revenue are pledge/donations from individuals and corporations and the sale of bricks for our “Honor Wall.” As of 31 December 2019, BNAM had $98,834 in total assets broken down as follows:

Our total Operating Fund revenue for 2019 was $38,737, broken down as follows:

It should be clear that the Museum’s financial resources have grown steadily since our inception in 2009 – and we have taken appropriate steps to assure our solvency. Having said that, we need to accelerate our financial growth to achieve the following ends:

1) We must grow our annual Operating Fund revenue in order to hire a full-time Executive Director. In addition to the benefits of professionalizing this position, it will bring the additional benefit of enabling us to qualify for the U.S. Navy’s Loan Qualification Program, whereby we can accept custody of official U.S. Navy artifacts for exhibit in our museum. We foresee three principal lines of operations to achieve this:

a. Increasing our membership revenue

b. Increasing our corporate sponsorship revenue

c. Generating revenue from our Museum Store; initially through on-site retail, and ultimately through on-line e-commerce through our web site

2) We must grow our Capital Fund revenue order to commence the first phase of our capital renovation. We are working to develop a new case statement based on the professional museum design services we are procuring from the Paulus Design Group.

If you are a member of the museum, thank you for your contribution of your annual membership dues which are essential to sustain our operations and maintain our current facility. Please consider increasing the value of your annual membership; more details can be found at https://bnamuseum.org/membership/.

If you have made a contribution to our Wheels Up capital campaign, thank you! A portion of your contribution has been used to complete the professional architectural design work for our capital renovation plan, along with the ongoing professional interior museum design efforts of the Paulus Design Group. Please consider increasing the amount of your commitment through an updated campaign pledge; pledges can be paid over a five-year period. More details can be found at https://bnamuseum.org/wheelsup/.

If you haven’t yet contributed financially to our museum, please consider doing so to take advantage of the tax breaks for charitable contributions in the 2020 CARES Act. We are on a steady growth vector – but are looking to accelerate it to decrease the amount of time it takes for us to become a first-rate attraction.

MATCHING GIFTS Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions or volunteer hours made by their employees. If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your employer, and send it completed and signed with your gift. We will do the rest. The impact of your gift to the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum may be doubled or possibly tripled!

BEQUESTS A charitable bequest is one of the easiest and most flexible ways that you can leave a gift to the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum that will make a lasting impact. Benefits of a Bequest

• Receive an estate tax charitable deduction • Reduce the burden of taxes on your family • Leave a lasting legacy to the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum

How a Bequest Works A bequest is one of the easiest gifts to make. With the help of an attorney, you can include language in your will or trust specifying a gift to be made to family, friends, or the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum as part of your estate plan, or you can make a bequest using a beneficiary designation form.

Here are some of the ways to leave a bequest to the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum:

• Include a bequest to the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum in your will or revocable trust

• Designate the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum as a full, partial or contingent beneficiary of your retirement account (IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or pension)

• Name the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy

A bequest may be made in several ways: • Specific bequest – make a gift of a specific dollar amount or a specific asset • Percentage bequest – make a gift of a percentage of your estate • Residual bequest – make a gift from the balance or residue of your estate • Contingent bequest – make a gift if the purpose of the primary bequest

cannot be met

IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER Now that Congress has made the IRA charitable rollover permanent, you can count on this valuable tool to support the preservation and sustainment of the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum. Whether you choose to make an unrestricted gift or designate it to a particular Museum project or initiative, your contribution will maintain the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum experience for years to come.

If you are 70½ or older, gifts made from your IRA (up to $100,000 per year) are not reportable as taxable income. They also qualify for your required minimum distribution, which can lower your income and taxes.

Need to find a certified estate planner? Find one at the National Association of Estate Planners website at http://www.naepc.org.

SECURITIES The Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum is able to accept gifts of securities such as stocks and mutual funds. Please contact our Treasurer, Mr. Jim Oikle, at [email protected] to coordinate the financial institution details. WALL OF HONOR BRICK PROGRAM Every brick tells a story…

You can play an important role in preserving the rich heritage of Naval Air Station Brunswick by purchasing a personally engraved brick for the Wall of Honor at the new entrance of the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum, where it will be displayed for all who pass through to see. The purchase of your brick will help to inspire and educate so that the spirit of naval aviation is alive for years to come. Whether celebrating a graduation, memorializing a loved one, or commemorating a retirement, we all have a story to tell. Keep the spirit alive through the purchase of a Wall of Honor brick! You may do so at https://bnamuseum.org/wall-of-honor/.

IN MEMORIAM In Memoriams are a way for families and friends to honor a loved one who has passed. Donations are made to the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum in memory of an individual. An In Memoriam remembrance is commissioned when a fund reaches $1,000. Once the donation has been met, the honoree’s pictures and biography are displayed in an interactive database on the Museum website. The next of kin will supply a photo of the individual being honored, along with information about the deceased and a description of their life and achievements. For more information, contact our Development Committee Chairman, Mr. Brian Daniels, at [email protected].

Members of the Board of Directors and volunteers performed an annual spring cleaning and mulching for our Friendship and Memorial Gardens and the Gold Star Families Memorial Marker in P-3 Park. We were particularly grateful for the volunteer services of Emma Levesque and Maeve Swift; they are both in their senior year at Cheverus High School and reached out to the Garden Club Federation of Maine to find community service projects in light of their COVID interrupted senior year. BNAM would also like to thank Country Fare, Inc. for the donation of mulch for our gardens.

- Food catering by Cook’s Lobster and Ale House and a cash bar featuring sodas, cocktails, wine, and beer from the Flight Deck Brewing Company. Cook’s Lobster and Ale House and Flight Deck Brewing Company are strong supporters of BNAM and Cooks’ is generously donating 10% of all food sales back to BNAM and Flight Deck Brewing Company is donating $1 to BNAM for every beer sold during the Reunion. The Welcoming Reception on Friday night and the Parking Lot Party on Saturday afternoon will feature an ala carte, pay as you go menu and cash bar. The Reunion Banquet on Saturday night features fixed menu options and a cash bar and requires pre-paid food reservations in advance. Further details are contained below.

One of our key needs to achieve our growth strategy in 2020 and beyond is to build our base of volunteers to give us more organizational capacity. Here are some key committee functions where we need more volunteer capacity: Collections Committee: Receive, catalog, and prepare artifacts for exhibit. Construct story boards to offer historical and educational context for artifacts. Docents: Greet visitors and present educational tours of the museum and its artifacts. We need more docents to expand our hours of operation. Development Committee: Solicit and sustain corporate sponsorships and capital campaign contributions from individuals and corporations alike. This function can be performed virtually. Events Committee: Coordinate support infrastructure requirements (chairs, tables, audio/visual, music, etc.) for museum-hosted events. Execute setup/breakdown of event support infrastructure. Information Technology Committee: Design and maintain museum IT infrastructure including our web site and Facebook page. If you are willing to volunteer your time and talent toward any of these committees, please send an e-mail to [email protected].

We are pleased to report that the VP-23 “Seahawk Challenge” has reached the 31% mark in its quest to raise $50,000 for our “Wheels Up” capital campaign. The Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum, in partnership with Captain and Mrs. F. Brown Word, USN (Retired), is pleased to announce the kickoff of our “Seahawk Challenge” to raise $50,000 in donations and pledges to the museum’s “Wheels Up” capital campaign. Captain & Mrs. Word pledged $10,000 to the museum’s capital campaign, and would like to call upon other former VP-23 “Seahawks” to pledge their support for the “Wheels Up” campaign with a goal of raising $50,000 to name the museum’s flight simulator room the “VP-23 Seahawks Flight Simulator Room.” The VP-23 “Seahawks” were based at NAS Brunswick, Maine from May of 1952 until the squadron was disestablished in February of 1995, and Captain Word was the Commanding Officer from 1989 to 1990. Capital campaign pledges may be made over a period of up to 5 years. In launching this challenge, Captain Word stated, “I have visited the Brunswick Naval Avaition Museum and seen its potential to preserve the rich heritage of NAS Brunswick and the squadrons who were stationed there. VP-23 was based at NAS Brunswick for more than 40 years, and I call upon all former Seahawks to contribute to preserving the legacy and camaraderie of the Seahawks.”
