Textbooks: The Unfinished Nation: A Concise History of the American People, Vol. I -- To 1877, 7 1h edition by Alan Brinkley American Realities: Historical Episodes, Vol. 1 - From the First Settlements to the Civil War, 8 th edition by J. William T. Youngs Longman American History Atlas Objective of the Course: To gain an understanding of the events that have taken place from colonial times through the Civil War and its aftermath as well as the people involved. Appreciation of geography, writing and speaking skills and critical thinking will be emphasized. Above all, we want to learn things well and enjoy the experience! Grading: Three Map Quizzes - 20, 20 and 10 points a) states; b) cities; and c) physical features Three Readings & Lecture Quizzes in between exams Three Exams - 50 points each (1 st or 2 nd grade will be dropped) whichever is worse 50 points 30 points 100 points * All quizzes and exams must be answered using a blue or black pen only! Participation in class discussions and excellent attendance 20 points *Cannot earn attendance points part with more than three absences. Also, TWO current events summary and analysis papers are expected as part of class participation. Also, need photocopies of articles. Due date is the Tuesday of the 6 th week of classes. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS ACCEPTED!!! Thus, the final grade is computed: 180-200 points - A 160-179 points - B 140-159 points - C 120-139 points - D Below 120 points - F (90-100%) (80-89%) (70-79%) (60-69%) (59% and below) Attendance and Make-ups: Attendance on days of quizzes or exams is mandatory and obviously poor attendance means poor grades! Make-ups will only he given if the professor is notified in advance - and in that case may be taken earlier - or if documentation is provided because of health problems. In those cases, the quiz or exam must be taken immediately upon return. In the event of car trouble, the professor must be notified immediately to make arrangements to take the quiz or exam that same day; documentation is also necessary.

Objective of the Course: To gain an understanding of the events that have taken place from colonial times through the Civil War and its aftermath as well as the people involved.
