A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT ~ Paul O’Donnell

As I noted last month, the holiday season is upon us.

This brings lots of errands to run, parties to attend, and

resolutions to make. It’s important to take time with our

families and re-center our lives. Along those lines, we

are having our Holiday/New Year’s Ceili on Sunday,

January 3rd, so it shouldn’t interfere with other

celebrations. We’d love to have you join us for the first

GWCC Ceili in 2016; if you still have some out-of-town

guests, you could treat them to some fantastic traditional

Irish music.

To stay informed on upcoming events, be sure to see

the schedule section in this newsletter, our webpages

(www.gwcc-online.org and

www.capemaydanceweekend.org) and our Facebook

page (Greater Washington Ceili Club). Wishing All a

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Joyous New

Year.

DANCE NOTES ~ Edie O’Donnell, Photos by Susan Krische

We had a light turnout of only 43 dancers at the

GWCC Ceili at Cherry Hill Park on November 22nd, but

those present enjoyed a stellar band and an energetic

dance line-up.

The workshop dance was the Moate Set, with Paul

O’Donnell as our workshop instructor. This set was

taught at our Cape May weekend last month and has

some very interesting moves, especially the third figure,

Dance Notes (Cont.)

where everyone is moving at once in an interlacing St.

Bridget’s Cross. The band, Rambling House, was

comprised of Tina Eck, Joe DeZarn, Patrick Cavanagh, and

Marc Glickman. The tunes were “mighty.”

We warmed up with the first set of dances, the South

Galway Set, the Moate Set, the Ballyvourney Jig Set, and

the Bonfire Dance. Everyone must have been practicing

their cooking skills prior to Thanksgiving, because the buffet

table was overflowing with tasty offerings. The second set

of dances found us enjoying the Kilfenora Set, the Walls of

Limerick, and the West Kerry Set. During the second break

Molly Rehbehn won the 50/50 drawing. We ended the

evening with the Connemara Set, a waltz, and the Clare

Lancers Set. A special moment after the dancing ended was

a fiddle duet by Joe DeZarm and Aidan Pitner, where Aidan

got to show off his growing skills!

Don't forget our spectacular New Year’s Ceili on

January 3, 2016! See the flyer in this newsletter for

more details

THE SPRING FLING – SAVE THE DATE GWCC’s annual Spring Fling in Shepherdstown,

WV, will be held on April 15th to the 17th. This has

become a multi-state event, with dancers from Ohio,

Pennsylvania, and Delaware attending last year. It is a

wonderful, laid back, easy-going weekend not to be

missed. Please put it on your calendar.

GWCC NEW YEAR’S CEILI

The next GWCC ceili at Cherry Hill RV Park Ballroom

is the New Year’s Ceili on Sunday, January 3, 2016!!! This

is one not to be missed. We have had good attendance at

this ceili in the past and expect the same again this year. It

costs just a little more, as our expenses are higher for this

date, but the music is just as wonderful as ever and the dance

selections are outstanding. Note also that the annual pass

does not apply for entrance to this ceili.

There will be a free drawing for door prizes, including a

non-transferable pass to our Spring Fling Weekend and an

annual membership in GWCC, plus additional prizes. Sodas

will be free and coffee and tea is provided. There is a pot

luck dinner at the first break, so bring something to share,

the food spread is always very good.

Note that the dance starts at 4:00 PM. There is no

workshop and no set of the month, but come early to ensure

you are ready to dance when the band starts playing at 4:00.

Beginning dancers are encouraged to attend, there is

almost always someone in each set who can get new dancers

through the set. See the flyer later in this newsletter. Hope

to see all of you there.

SET DANCING NEWS ~ Don Kaliher

In case some of the newer dancers (and maybe some of

the experienced dancers) don’t know about the magazine Set

Dancing News and the associated Web sites www.sets.ie and

www.setdancingnews.net, I highly recommend subscribing

(the Web sites are free) if you are serious about set dancing.

Bill Lynch publishes the magazine and keeps the Web sites

up to date.

The magazine is bi-monthly and costs $60 per year. It is

full of articles and pictures on various set dancing events

around the world. It has a wonderful calendar of upcoming

set dancing events in Ireland and world-wide. If you are

traveling anywhere, you can get the current scoop on what’s

happening most anywhere you intend to go. The most

recent issue had articles and pictures on our Cape May

Dance Weekend at Rehoboth Beach and on our 30th

Anniversary Ceili. The prior issue had Marilyn Moore’s

article on the South Sligo Summer School (which you read

here first).

If you are involved with set dancing, you are bound to get

your picture in the magazine at some point, if you haven’t

already. We will have one or more copies of the magazine

at the New Year’s Ceili for viewing and will provide

subscription coupons. Otherwise, just send your name and

address, email and phone number, with a check for $60

made payable to Bill Lynch, to Set Dancing News,

Kilfenora, County Clare, Ireland. You won’t be sorry.

THE MONTHLY CCE CEILI

If you haven’t been, or haven’t been recently, to the

Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann (CCE) monthly ceili, now

held at Frying Pan Park Visitor’s Center, it’s time to

give it a try. My wife and I went last week and had a

grand time. There were a number of other GWCC

members in attendance. It is easy to meet people,

everyone is friendly.

The dance is especially good for beginning dancers,

with a number of ceili dances, but there were enough

sets to keep everyone busy. All the dances are called.

The park is easy to get to, Washington beltway to the

Dulles Toll Rd., exit at and left turn onto Fairfax

Parkway (Rt. 286). After two miles or so, right on West

Ox Rd. (Rt. 608), maybe another mile to the entrance to

the park on the right.

The floor is very nice to dance on and they had a nice

spread of food and snacks. The dance is held the second

Saturday of the month, with a lesson at 6:30, dance

starts at 7:00. Cost is $15 for non-members of CCE.

THE DANCE SEASON To give you a sneak peek at the remainder of the

2016 season, the workshop dances for the monthly

GWCC ceilis will be:

January 3: No workshop dance

January 24: Borlin

February 28: Moycullen

March 20: Derrada (Note: 3rd Sunday)

April 24: West Kerry

May 22: Claddagh

All ceilis this year will be on the fourth Sunday of

the month, except March, which will be on the third

Sunday, as the fourth Sunday is Easter.

‘EIRWAYS ~ Don Kaliher

Another recent addition to the Irish community is

‘Eirways, a print magazine exploring Irishness and capturing

the character of Ireland. It is published by Kieran O’Hare

and Kevin O’Brien. You may remember Kieran from his

days of playing uilleann pipes in the Baltimore/Washington

area some years ago. It features articles on Irish art, writers,

emigrants, heritage, photography, and many other interesting

topics.

A 4-issue annual subscription is $60 and individual issues

(1 and 2 to date) are available for $15 each. See

http://www.eirways.com/.

SET OF THE MONTH

There will be no set of the month for the January 3, 2016,

New Year’s Ceili. There is NO workshop on January 3rd,

the ceili will start at 4:00 PM. The set for the January 24th

ceili will be noted in the January newsletter, along with the

dance notes.
