our 22nd annual festival 2017 Monday, February 27 7:30 pm Concert: The Chieftains Majestic tin whistles, soaring fiddles, thunderous bodhrán, and concertinas redolant of the verdant hills of Ireland have kept the Chieftains’ name synonymous with traditional Irish music for over 50 years. Led by founding member Paddy Maloney — arguably the most important name in Irish music history — the band has spread Ireland’s indigenous songs and styles to the rest of the world ... The Chieftains rarely make their way to the Burlington area — an uncommon treat not to be missed. Irish attack Canada” In 1866 and 1870, militant Irish nationalists crossed the border from Vermont to strike a blow for the independence of Ireland. Lecture and displays by Liam McKone describe this lit- tle-known armed conflict that brought members of the Fenian Brotherhood to St. Albans from as far away as Kentucky. Weapons and clothing will be available for you to dress as a soldier of the original Irish Republican Army and take a “selFenian” photo. Farrell Room, St. Edmunds Hall, Saint Michael’s College. Benedict Koehler and Hilari Far- rington will weave a unique and captivating his- tory of Ireland through music on some of its iconic instruments: Irish harp, uilleann bagpipes, button accordion, and tin whistle. Founders of the Vermont School of Irish Traditional Music, these well-known musicians have played and taught music throughout North America and Ireland. Hear fiddles and flutes, Irish pipes and pennywhistles; and the bodhrán, an Irish frame drum. Area musicians are welcome to bring their instruments and join in for a lively seisun. Bake sale; display tables with information on Irish language, culture and other events. Mem- bers of the McFadden Academy of Irish Dance will perform and also lead audience participation in Ceili dances.
