Every ten years, the Constitution mandates that the entire U.S. population be counted, and it is required by law that everyone responds. The Census is the foundation for all the U.S. population data. One crucial way it is used is in determining how many seats each state gets in the House of Representatives. In addition to governmental representation, the Census is also used for funding and decision-making for businesses, schools, non-profits, health care, policy leaders, philanthropy and communities across the nation. Colorado is one of the fastest growing states in the nation, and Weld County specifically is rapidly increasing in population size. Colorado could gain up to $630 million in funding and a U.S. House Seat after this Census. In order to not miss out and maintain support for our growing, thriving community, it is crucial that we be accurately represented in the Census. Completing the Census is one of the best ways you can support your community. So be on the lookout for your chance to help your community and Colorado! Add these dates to your calendar: March 12, 2020: First mailers will be sent to households. Online portal to respond to 2020 Census will be open. April 1, 2020: Official Census Day! (This can be your day to remind yourself to complete your Census, if you haven’t already submitted it.) April 2020-July 2020: Census takers will go door-to-door to visit households that haven’t already submitted their Census response. Fun facts: Available in 13 languages online and over the phone. Available in English and Spanish by mail. The Census form goes to every household. The American Community Survey (ACS) goes out to 1 in 38 households and is longer than the Census. If a household gets the ACS, they will ALSO need to fill out the 2020 Census. You can look up Census workers going house-to-house in the Census Bureau staff directory or you can call the Denver Regional Office at 1-800-852-6159. Caregiver Corner: Let's Talk About Falls Caregivers, are you concerned about your loved one falling? The truth is that everyone falls, no matter your age. For an older adult, a fall can result in a serious and costly injury, which can vastly affect a caregiver’s ability to provide good care. The National Council on Aging estimates that every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in an emergency room for a fall, and every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall. The average hospital cost is nearly $30,000 per incident! Naturally, this also has an impact on caregivers. Research has shown that after a loved one’s first fall, caregivers report a significant increase in caregiver burden, fear of falling and depression. The good news is most falls can be prevented with just a few modifications around your home. Join other caregivers as they come together on Monday, September 23rd for a casual discussion on fall prevention. Information will be presented from the National Council on Aging. All caregivers in attendance will receive a copy of the Fall Prevention Guide for Family Caregivers. This special Caregiver Luncheon is FREE and will be held at the Eaton Recreation Center from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided, but registration is required.
