Basketball court upgrade It is great to see the new basketball surface opened up for students. The surface has been completely replaced and we have added a tennis court to the space as well. This is timely as Jake has a week to practise before he heads away to Caloundra to play basketball for the Wide Bay team. Good Luck Jake. Misconceptions in Mathematics Number: Adding Negative Numbers.

Misconceptions involving negative numbers stem from students using the rules of addition used when

adding positive numbers. To help correct this misconception we can use specific language when performing

addition with negative numbers. We can use the term taking away to represent minus and giving back to

represent plus. As an example -8 +6 is read as taking away 8 and giving back 6, which is equivalent to

taking away only two. The equation looks like this -8 + 6 = -2. Practice using the language of taking

away and giving back in the following equations.

-5 + 2 =

-18 + 5 =

-73 + 10 =

-12 + 7 =

-22 + 8 =

Drawing a number line is great for visual learners to be able to draw the steps they need to take to give

back.

Example on a number line: -6 + 3 = -3 (taking away 6 and giving back 3).

Thank you

It has been a fun packed Term 2 for me as Chappy at Kilkivan School, so far. We have had some fun visitors come to school in Week 4 to help celebrate the completion of NAPLAN week. They were a team from YWAM, which is an International Organisation that trains youth to be of service to the community. They organised sports and craft activities and shared about the countries where they live. Students especially enjoyed chatting, the Inflatable soccer, Kazoo making and balloon tag game. I had some feedback from the YWAM Team too, who said how respectful and especially nice the Kilkivan students are. They asked me to pass this onto teachers and parents. So…Well done Kilkivan! Then on the weekend, I helped man a stall at the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival, to fund- raise for School chaplaincy. This makes up for the shortfall in the Federal Government Funding and allows our local Chappies to be in their schools, for more hours. It was a great day and we handed out hundreds of balloons to kids watching the parade and blew up hundreds more at our stall to give away. Thank you to our wonderful helpers. Chappy - Janelle

Last week's answer was: If you re-write the 2s to face each other you get the shape of a fish. 3s to face each other you get the number 8 and 7s to face each other you get a triangle!!

This week:

1. The more you take out of it, the bigger it becomes. What is it? 2. Every evening I get my assignment and I always fulfil it, but every time I do, I get scolded. What am I?

This term has been incredibly busy for our year 1’s , 2’s and 3’s! We have had many fun things happening and quite a few holidays but d espite that we are still going great guns with our learning and always endeavour t o do our best. In week 3 Deadly Arthur Conlon visited our school a nd taught us how to paint, it was an amazing experience! In this same week we had our Small School Sports Carnival down at the town oval. It was a fun day an d everyone participated well! In week 4 our year 3 students sat their first NAPLA N assessments. We were all very positive and excited about this experience and all worked hard and did our best! We also had a visit from YWAM in week 4 who played games with us and did craft activities, this was organised by our Chappy which we greatly appreciated. Week 5 was another exciting week with Under 8’s day happening. The year ones and twos joined in the activities while the year 3’s, w ho are over 8, helped run the activities. An enjoyable morning was had by all. This term has also seen us have our Parent/Teacher interviews. All were very positive and it was a credit to our p arents to have so many attend. In class time we have been learning how to write pe rsuasive and procedural texts in English and in Maths we have been learning how t o tell time, add up coins and calculate change. Science this term is all about ou r world, its features and how it moves. Thank you! Miss Wiggins - Year 1,2,3 Teacher
