“501” River News - January 2020 - 3 “501” River News - January 2020 - 3
Happy New Year everyone. I hope everyone had a great and safe Holiday.
We are so excited for the new programs coming in 2020. This year we are looking at some new dementia programs for both the person with dementia and the care-giver. We will also be working with community agencies and the community at large on communication when working with someone with dementia.
Development of our “Teaching Kitchen” will begin this year. This amazing project will provide educational resources for seniors, students and the community focus-ing on building a greater awareness of wellness through nutrition and the healing power of food. It will indeed be a place for all to learn, to connect and to heal. Make sure to watch for more information in 2020.
As always, the beginning of a new year triggers goal setting. What is something you want to do this year? Is it to become healthier, start exercising, make more time for yourself, start a new class, become more involved, volunteer, or something else? It’s important that we try to achieve a new goal each year to grow within ourselves but we can’t just develop a goal, we have to take action. I challenge you to develop one or two goals for yourself and write three action steps on how to make this happen. J Good luck on your goals.
Special ThanksThank you to Alpena Agency and Auto-Owners Insurance for your generous donation in support of our Christmas lunch, dinner and Meals-on-Wheels. Our Christmas Celebration was a big success, partly due to the delicious meal youenabled us to provide. From the bottom of our hearts (and stomachs), thank you for your generosity!
From the Director

GOOD NUTRITIONGood nutrition is vital to health, vitality and quality of life. Senior nutrition is essential and, done properly, can lead to healthy aging. Its not complicated, but as we age we do have some different health and nutritional concerns of which we need to be aware.
According to the National Institutes of Health, good nutrition for the senior population helps to reduce the risk of such things as osteoporo-sis, heart disease, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer. Additionally, the government reports that eating well can reduce the risks of stroke, type 2 diabetes, bone loss, some kinds of cancer, and anemia. Furthermore for those who already have some of these conditions, good nutrition can help to manage them better.
People should aim to eat a diversity of foods so that the body is getting a variety of nutrition. As people age, they need fewer calories, but that does not mean they need fewer nutrients.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that a lot of the illnesses, disabilities and deaths associated with chronic diseases could be avoided or at least postponed with lifestyle changes. Good senior nutrition, along with not using tobacco and staying physically active, is the foundation of healthy aging. Here are some of the most important considerations when it comes to nutrition for seniors:
• Go for variety. Aim to eat a diversity of foods so that the body is getting a variety of nutrition. This will help ensure nutritional needs are met. It’s important to get good sources of iron, protein, healthy fats and calcium each day.
• Avoid the junk. As much as we may like empty-calorie foods such as chips, cookies, soda and candy, they wreak havoc on our bodies. Avoiding them is a sure step toward good nutrition.
• Know the fats. The fats to avoid as much as possible are saturated, which comes from animals. Also avoid trans fats, which are found in many processed foods.
• Get vitamins and minerals. A daily supplement of vitamin D is particularly important, as it helps to ward off osteoporosis which can lead to hip fractures.
• The key to healthy aging and good nutrition is getting plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein.
Many people have difficulty eating as they age. However, this should not discourage individuals from get-ting good nutrition. If chewing or choking is a concern, foods will need to be softened, creamed, or made into soups. Another senior nutrition concern for those on fixed incomes is often the rising cost. Ways to cut expenses are to buy foods in season, use coupons, and watch for sales.
The American Dietetic Association reports that most older adults take in only a third of the nutritional requirements that their bodies actually need. That can lead to a reduced quality of life, making it imperative that people make an effort to set and meet better goals when it comes to nutrition for seniors.

New Year’s Resolution Roughly half of Americans admit to usually making some kind of New Year’s resolution. Yet despite their good intentions for self-improvement, only about 8 percent of people are successful in achieving their resolution often because they set a goal that is simply too lofty.
Here are seven potential New Years resolutions for seniors that are easily attainable with just a little effort…
• Update (or create) your legal documents. The very nature of many legal documents is that you don’t need them until you need them, and this is especially true of wills, advance directives (also called a living will) and power of attorney documents. If you haven’t already created each of these, contact your attorney and set up an appointment to get the ball rolling. If you already created these documents many years ago, it is a good idea to review them periodically to ensure nothing about your wishes has
dramatically changed.
• Psychological studies have shown that clutter exacerbates anxiety, depression, and generally just makes us feel overwhelmed and stressed. Cleaning, on the other hand, is often cited as a stress-reliever…and it also burns calories! Make 2020 the year to tackle the task of cleaning out your attic, garage, and/or closets.
• Eat healthier! Want to live to be 100? You can increase your odds simply by improving your diet. The people in the Blue Zones (the cities that have the most centenarians) seem to have it figured out,and following some of their diet and lifestyle choices can put you on the path to a longer, healthier life.
• Get a check-up. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That’s why you should have an annual check-up with your primary care doctor. He or she will be able to spot any issues early, before they become a major health crisis. Yes, laughter is good medicine, but preventive care may just be the best medicine.
• Learn how to use technology. Staying connected to friends and family has many mental health benefits for seniors. The internet and social media make it simpler than ever to keep in touch, even for the elderly who might otherwise become socially isolated. That’s probably why seniors are one of the fastest grow-ing demographics on Facebook. If you aren’t currently using social media-maybe you just aren’t sure how to “Facebook”-ask a friend or loved one for a lesson and make 2020 the year you start connecting with loved ones virtually.
• If you are approaching retirement age, you probably have already thought about where you would like to live as you grow old (and hopefully you’ve been saving your money accordingly). There is no time like the present to start exploring your options.
• Get more exercise. This is a popular resolution, and often, it is also one that quickly gets abandoned. Yet exercise has countless health benefits, especially as we age-increasing cardiovascular health, strength-ening bones, improving balance, and managing weight. A little exercise is better than none! Take the stairs, park further from the mall entrance, or just get up from the sofa and move. Better yet, join us at the senior center Monday, Wednesday and Friday for Empowered Movement. For more information contact BJ at 989-356-3585.
Pick one or seven and then set your goals for 2020. Happy New Year!!
