    Presenter: John Einarson, Music Historian and AuthorIn this three part series we analyze the evolution of rock ‘n’ roll as a social, musical and cultural phenomenon that transformed the world in the latter half of the 20th century. Topics covered include the origins and roots of rock ‘n’ roll and the various regional influences that ultimately converged to create what is generally regarded as rock ‘n’ roll music, societal response to rock ‘n’ roll as a cultural trend, the characteristics of 1950s rock, ‘60s pre-Beatles rock music, the impact of the Beatles and the British Invasion, and the fragmentation of rock music into a number of strands including folk or protest rock, psychedelic/acid rock, soul, blues-based hard rock, heavy metal, prog/art rock, country rock, glam and disco, punk/New Wave and so on and the characteristics of each.

Fifteen fun, fairytale vignettes make up this classic holiday favourite including Cinderella, Humpty Dumpty, Three Blind Mice, and more. In this presentation, Director of Education and Exhibits Erin McIntyre will provide an introduction to the history of the vignettes, including their construction, their display at Eaton's, their transition to the Children's Museum, and their ongoing maintenance and conservation. This presentation will also include discussion of some of the fairytales featured.

    It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of our longest serving volunteers, Joann Alexander-Smith, on June 7, 2018. As the retired Executive Director of the Manitoba Opera, Joann had a wealth of knowledge that she generously shared with our Senior Centre Without Walls participants. We loved listening to her presentations and accompanying music from composers such as Puccini, Mozart, Verdi and Bizet. She also presented on other topics such as Egyptology and Lawrence of Arabia. Joann - thank you for sharing your time, energy and passion with us - you will be missed.

In the winter of 2018, her dream came true! During her travel of four days, she went to see the magnificent Niagara Falls and the amazing skyline of downtown Toronto. She visited the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec; The Royal Ontario Museum, CN Towers, and Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada in Toronto.
