In 2009, the VUSD board approved the first phase of

the district arts master plan, which included elementary

level art and music. This year the Arts Collaborative,

including arts teachers, site and district administrators,

school board and VEP community partners, is in the

process of approving phase II which covers secondary

level arts. Review and approval of the plan will

continue throughout 2014.

“Local muralist and artist extraordinary MB

Hanrahan is often a guest artist teaching students

how to paint ceramic tiles to make large tile

murals around campus.“

- Phyllis Mann, Buena HS 3-D Art Teacher

“This year we painted our mural, went to

festival for the first time, and moved to a

completely paperless classroom grading system

where students are in charge of their own

assessment. We also started a new muti-media

concert in conjunction with the DATA Art

department for Dia de los Muertos. Next year

we’re doing a project with the STEM class

building music robots and the program is growing

to over 200 students!”

- Natalie Spevak, music at DATA

“Over four thousand elementary school students

received Visual Arts lessons this year in VUSD. I

developed standard based K-5 Visual Arts

lessons which teachers receive monthly via

email. Lessons are designed to be accessible,

easy to implement in classrooms, and offer

Common Core support. I collaborated with Kay

Clark from the Food and Nutrition Department /

Farm to School Program. We are developing the

Harvest of the Month Calendar Project.

- Nancy Kellogg, Elementary Art Specialist

Cabrillo Middle School music students earned top

honors at Music Festival. The Wind Ensemble

and String Orchestra each received a unanimous

Superior/Gold first place rating. Two Cabrillo

music students were selected for the all-state

honor band, out of 1,700 entries from the state of

California.

- Cabrillo Middle School Music Department

“Noteables choir recently performed a concert with Juno

award winning composer/singer Norman Foote. Company

performed their 2nd annual dinner theatre concert "Not

Entirely Wicked" songs of Stephen Schwartz to two nights

of sold out crowds.”

- Heidi House, music teacher.

“We are in the early stages of implementing Smartmusic,

an online software which will help accelerate and motivate

second year band members to work at their own level.”

- Paul Browne, Elementary Music Specialist

“The Multicultural Students participated in the annual

Chalk Festival, that takes place each spring at VHS.” -

Maryanne Irving, VHS Art Teacher

“The Buena Marching Band grew to a membership of 93

students. Colorguard grew from 3 members to a record-

breaking 24! The Buena Drumline teamed up with the

Ventura Educational Partnership to lead the opening

parade for the Annual Storyfest Celebration. In fall of 2013

the Buena Music Program and the Buena Foreign

Language department teamed up in collaboration for the

first annual Dia De Los Muertos celebration on the Buena

campus. The Wind Ensemble received the rating of

"Unanimous Superior" at Festival. In collaboration with

Buena HS Librarian Joel Levin and Buena HS Drama

teacher Frank Davis the Buena Music Program will be

setting up a small recording studio in the old choir room

163 at BHS. The studio was made possible through a

grant from the Ventura Education Partnership on behalf of

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and will be used by several

classes to promote young musicians, record playing tests,

backing tracks for drama productions, and other such

projects.”

- Daniel Algazy, BHS Music Teacher
