DEGREES

Eugene Harris was passed to the degree of a Fellowcraft Mason on Sep. 20. Eugene was so energized by the degree work and ritual that he requested that his Masters degree be scheduled the following Monday. Sep. 27 raised three Masons to the last and highest grade of ancient craft Masonry. Cotner Lodge was pleased to raise Bro. Dan Kahler Jr, of George Washington Lodge 250. Our third candidate, Ken Kolts was joined by his Father, Ray Kolts who made the trip from Idaho and assisted in his son’s degree. Ray is Past Master of Elysian Lodge 418 of Los Angeles, CA. Congratulations to all.

HIGHWAYBeAutiFiCAtiOn

Cotner Lodge patrols a 2 mile stretch of highway twice a year as part of the Nebraska Department of Roads Adopt-A-Highway beautification program. Eight Cotner “eagle-eyes” scoured the ditches near Eagle and found the task “easy going.” It is much easier to keep a ditch clean than it is to make it clean. Thanks go out to those who braved road-kill, insects, mystery packages, household siding and other surprises. Job well done!

On Nov. 27 Cotner Lodge will host a Holiday Classic Rock Benefit Dance for the Masonic-Eastern Star Children’s Home in Fremont. Music will be provided by the Brākmen, a 60s and 70s rock band recently inducted into the Nebraska Music Hall of Fame. This is not just any band, but one who in their day opened for the Buckinghams, The Association, Strawberry Alarm Clock and Paul Revere and the Raiders. The event will be held at the Sesostris Shrine in Lincoln.

Press releases are available

that allow individual Lodges to brand the event with their own identity. Many Lodges large and small have remarked that they do not have the resources to create any significant community presence – visibility that helps draw attention to the organization, create a positive image and aid in member recruitment. Cotner Lodge has provided press kits with various press releases, posters, ads and graphics. Take advantage of the

opportunity this benefit provides and shine a positive light on your organization and your commitment to the development of less-fortunate children – and, by all means, buy a ticket, come and dance!

As I was looking around for a filler article this month, I came across the DeMolay International Alumni Association Hall of Fame. The Alumni Association is committed to recognizing the achievements of successful Senior DeMolays. The Hall of Fame spotlights DeMolay’s bright past and will be the showcase for its shining future. It reminds all DeMolays of what can be accomplished with hard work. Space does not permit me to highlight all inductees, so I’ve selected a sampling and encourage you to check out the entire list and bios onlne: http://www.demolay.org/aboutdemolay/halloffame.php

Carl Albert, Politician, 46th Speaker of the House, “In reflecting on my forty-nine years of public service, I find that the precepts of the Order of DeMolay have been invaluable to me. This was particu-larly true the two times I was just a heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States and faced very difficult decisions. My public life, as well as my private life, has been guided by the DeMolay vow – to love and serve God, my country, and my fellow man.”

Cecil D. Andrus, Politician, 4 time Governor of Idaho, “The young men of the DeMolay orga-nization are taught responsibility, integrity, and honesty, and those have been the central values in my life. All of us who were involved in DeMolay in my time benefited tremendously from it. There are hundreds of thousands of examples of men whose adult careers were greatly enhanced because of their participation in DeMolay. The sad part of it is that it is such a brief period in our lives that we are able to be a part of it, but it occurs at a time of great change in a young man’s life. DeMolay’s lessons last a lifetime.”

Reubin Askew, Politician, Governor of Florida and presiden-tial candidate in 1983, “DeMolay played an important role during the formative years of my life. It gave me one of my earliest opportuni-

ties to learn about leadership and brotherhood. The values taught in DeMolay continue to be highly relevant and necessary to character development in young people in the difficult world of today.”

Dr. John Bailey, Soldier, International Educator, “The De-Molay experience lasts a lifetime. It begins with the inspired and ever-inspiring ritual. The wisdom behind those words gives each new member a moral North Star to guide him for all the years ahead. Practical opportunities abound in DeMolay to learn teamwork–the true foundation of leadership. Is it any wonder that DeMolay develops so many outstanding leaders in all the important fields of human endeavor?”

Mel Blanc, Voice Actor, “I have been a member of DeMolay for sixty-three years. I thank God and DeMolay for helping me be-come kind and thoughtful to my parents and all my friends. I had many opportunities to do the wrong things, and I might have done them, if it were not for DeMolay. God bless them.”

Walt Disney, Cartoonist Ex-traordinaire, “I feel a great sense of obligation and gratitude toward the Order of DeMolay for the important part it played in my life. Its precepts have been invaluable in making de-cisions, facing dilemmas and crises. DeMolay stands for all that is good for the family and for our country. I feel privileged to have enjoyed membership in DeMolay.

Burl Ives, Musician, Actor, “I was fortunate to be born into a family of Masons. Indeed, my older sister, Audrey was Grand Matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Illinois. My DeMolay experience came very naturally because of my father and brothers. Thus was my youth enhanced.”

Gary Collins, William Clin-ton, Lee Dryfus, Robert Duncan, Paul Harvey, Fran Tartenton, Tom Osborne, John Wayne, Dean Spanos, a total of 53 honorees.

LASt FiSHOUT THE DOOR

The last of the George and Martha Washington Second Saturday Fish Fry fishes for 2010 left the door last month. The Masonic trawler is in dry-dock getting barnacles scraped off, and we are all settling in for a Winter’s hibernation...

We have our fond memories of the fellowship and cameraderie that came with the site preparation, food preparation and frying and baking, and, of course, the eating...

We would like to look back on another year, and give heartfelt thanks to all from George and Martha Washington and friends who extended themselves in working so hard on food and site preparation and serving for all those Second Saturday Fish Fries. And where would we be without those who were eating the fish; those who supported us each time (we hope we rewarded your faithfulness with the best fried fish in 46 counties!)? From George Washington Lodge/Martha Washington Eastern Star, we thank you all for your support!

Good Lord willin’ and the creek don’t rise, see you all again after the snows all melt next April!

Catherine reached age 20 on Oct. 12, and is now a majority member. Her majority ceremony was conducted on Oct. 25 with help from Bethel 63, Lincoln. Catherine is truly a special Job’s Daughter. Catherine has always been an active, dedicated member of our Bethel, and an asset to Job’s Daughters. Catherine was initiated

into Job’s Daughters on Sep. 23, 2002 at age 12 and became a line officer when she was a freshman in high school. She served as Honored Queen for back-to-back terms in 2009 and received the Lily of the Valley Award in June, 2010. All of our members were so happy for Catherine when she was elected as Honored Queen and stepped up to help her when she needed a little extra help during her terms. Catherine has contributed to the betterment of our Bethel in so many ways. She has helped us learn to be humble, to be better mentors, to be better friends to all regardless of their circumstances, to be better cheerleaders, to appreciate the special gifts that each individual possesses, to not take ourselves quite so seriously, and to be more kind, patient and loving. Congratulations, Catherine!
