Notes from the Head of School

Dear Parents, As we head into our Autumn break, I want to express my appreciation to all members of the school community for an excellent first quarter of the school year. New families seem to have transitioned very well, our new faculty and administration have now been here since 27 July and are beginning to feel at home, and everyone is ready for a well-deserved break. We are looking forward to more opportunities to communicate with you in the coming weeks; The Board is planning some focus groups as we work on our Values and Beliefs review, our annual climate survey will be sent out by the Advancement Office toward the end of October, there is a “breakfast with the Head of School” on Friday, 26 October, and a Board-Community Meeting on Wednesday, 08 November at 19:00. And of course we hope everyone will come to our annual UN Day Celebration which this year will be on Tuesday, 23 October at 10:30 in the morning. In the meantime, enjoy the week with your children at home. Respectfully, Dr. Chip Barder, Head of School

Notes from the Board of Directors

The Board held an orientation session for new members of the Board's committees and task forces this week. Providing an orientation for all committee and task force members is part of the Board's commitment to best governance practice. It helps lay the foundation of knowledge and skills required for effective membership so that new members can quickly become an effective part of the Board team. Please click here to see the membership roster and meetings schedule for the committees and taskforces this year. All meetings are published on the school calendar and in Tin Tuc each week and are open to the wider community to attend. An email in advance to [email protected] is helpful (but not essential) to confirm your attendance. In addition to Board, Admin and Faculty members, I would also like to recognise and thank the parents and community members who have volunteered their time to be members of the Board's committees and task forces this year. Please click here to see more details about the parent and community members serving this year. Sarah Garner, UNIS Hanoi Board Chair

Dear Parents, Parent Partnership It was a great pleasure to welcome so many of you to the Parent Conferences this week. I hope the slightly longer sessions with Homeroom Teachers proved beneficial in terms of how much could be discussed. The teachers certainly appreciated all the information you were able to provide to help them get to know your child even better. Eighteen parents attended last Friday's Parent Forum. Jan Humpleby and I were able to address quite a few questions raised by attendees which covered subjects such as the buses, ASAs and use of the facilities, Mathematics/ Numeracy, Parent Workshops, Parent Conferences, Grade Level Blogs and Homework. We will return to some of these no doubt at the next session as well as report back on any progress over the intervening period. I found it a really helpful, informative hour and I hope that more parents will be able to attend next time as it affords a great opportunity to ask questions, air views and seek clarification. Student Leadership Student Council Representatives were finally announced in assembly this week after some wonderful speech writing and presentations in all Grade 3 to 5 homerooms. Secret ballots produced the following results: 3JC Pryor Hollis and Mai An Nguyen 3BF Trajan Keane and Kim-Leanne Pogade 3AL Jonah Ballard and Sophia Pineros saravia 3LB Carlos Joaquin Jahnsen and Anita Moyale 4MK Louis Kim and Omaya Munro 4SN Maily Hagan and Yota Suzuki 4BM Molly Homer and Chuc An Tran 4LL An Nguyen and Fiona Engelson 5HK Molly McDonald and Richard Dang 5KW Chinh Mai and Annika Dunne 5JH Anush Singhal and Anna Jang 5SC Rahil Ross and Tricia Teo Congratulations to all those who stood for election and good luck to those now elected to serve the student community and represent its views. So we come to the end of the first half term and the holiday approaches. I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your welcome and support during my first eight weeks at UNIS Hanoi. I have spent time getting to know staff, student and parent views on a range of issues and although this will continue for some time to come, I feel I have a much better understanding of the context here now. I wish everyone a relaxing and enjoyable holiday and look forward to the return to school on Monday 15 October.

Kind regards, Carole Denny, Elementary School Principal [email protected]

Notes from the Middle/High School Principal

Dear MS/HS Families,

I would like to thank all parents/guardians who attended 3-Way Conferences. Although there were a few glitches with ISIS sign-ups from all accounts the conferences were extremely positive experiences for all involved. I cannot stress enough the importance of parent involvement in a child’s education. Thoughtful and deliberate parent involvement sends an important message to children that their education is a top priority. When parents and teachers work together it creates a win-win situation for all. This past weekend saw a beehive of activity both on and off campus. Students participated in Service Learning projects, a Leadership Retreat in Laos, and swim and volleyball competitions on campus. All activities are designed to provide students with the opportunity for personal growth and team building. Please encourage your child to participate in any and all activities that strike their interest. To witness the enthusiasm and team spirit displayed by our student athletes or listen to the reflections of students when they return from service learning experiences reaffirms the importance of a balanced lifestyle. Essential skills and learning experiences do take place outside the classroom. Whether it be teamwork and perseverance in athletics, compassion and humility in service learning, or hard work and striving for excellence in the classroom all facets contribute to the UNIS Hanoi goal of developing lifelong learners who become responsible stewards of our global society. UN Day: Oct. 23. As we look ahead UN Day is quickly approaching. UN Day is a major focal point for the entire UNIS Hanoi community. I hope you will match our enthusiasm and participate. More information will be provided in the coming weeks and an outline programme is published below on page 5. Please enjoy a restful break! Warm regards, Pete Kennedy, Middle/High School Principal [email protected]

The International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) for Grade 3-9 Students October 17-18, 2012 Please note that we have shifted the two days for ISA testing for Grades 3-9 to the mornings of October 17 and 18, 2012. A reminder that there is no additional preparation that students can do before the ISA tests. We simply ask that students have a good night’s sleep and a solid breakfast prior to the days of testing. For more information on the ISA test please see last week’s Tin Tuc.

Parent Information Night for Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Reports: Grades 3-8 Parents of students in Grade 3-8 should have received an email from the school office today informing them how to access the MAP report through ISIS. Please join us on Tuesday, October 16 in the Centre for the Arts Theatre from 6-6.45pm to answer questions you may have about the test or about how to read the report. The purpose of this session will be to help you understand how to read the reports and to learn more about the MAP test in general. We highly encourage you to attend this session if you are new to UNIS Hanoi or to the MAP test. This will not be a time to discuss your individual child’s results, but a general session to assist parents in understanding how to read the reports. Please note: For families with students in Grades 3-5 this session will be followed by a PYP Parent Information Session in the Centre for the Arts Black Box starting at 7pm. Please join us for both sessions!

If you have any questions please contact Meagan Enticknap-Smith, Director of Learning at [email protected]

UN Day Celebration, one of the biggest events of the UNIS Hanoi calendar, will be held on Tuesday 23rd of October. The culminating event for the day is the international potluck lunch which is enjoyed by students, staff and parents. It is truly international and fun! Our shared lunch is provided by parents and is again an opportunity for you to showcase your nationality. Many parents bring in their favorite national dish or something that is popular in their home country. All parents and family members are welcome and encouraged to attend the luncheon which will start at 12:00 noon. Food Preparation Guidelines

Prepare one plate of food to serve 10 people (servings) for each of your child’s classroom.

Prepare food that does not require refrigeration or need to be heated.

Prepare food that can be easily served and can be eaten with fingers or forks — no soupy or runny dishes.

Do not bring any food that contains nuts of any kind; no peanuts, cashews, walnuts, almonds, etc or peanut oil or peanut products because of severe allergies.

Label the food with name and country of origin; decorate the plate/food with flags or ribbons. List the ingredients of your food for dietary restrictions and allergies (please see the sample below).

If you bring food on a serving plate, please collect it after the lunch is finished so it is not misplaced. It is recommended to clearly mark it with your child’s name and homeroom. Many people made a disposable serving container using a small cardboard container lined with foil which is then decorated to serve their food.

If your dish requires a serving spoon or fork, please provide.

More appetizers and main courses are required than desserts.

UNIS Hanoi will provide: plates, napkins, cups, and forks. Children will have their water bottles and parents are welcome to bring their own non-alcoholic drinks. Drinking cups and water will be available for everyone. Please bring your dish to the following rooms between 08:00—09:30.

Active Parenting NoW

Classes for Parents of Children Ages 5-12

Starts October 30th!

There are two lasting bequests we can give our children. One is roots. The other is wings.

~Hodding Carter, Jr., Author and Journalist ~

What is your parenting style? How about your partner's?

Parenting is extremely important, but can be challenging at some point or another. Fortunately, by learning how to enhance our parenting skills, cooperation from our children comes more naturally. There's a lot of evidence to show that authoritative and positive parenting has enormous benefits. UNIS Hanoi will be offering Active Parenting Classes, a video-based series, to help facilitate more effective family communication and cooperation. Topics covered during the six week sessions include:

Topics: Session 1: What is the purpose of parenting? What methods of choice can parents provide for their children? How can families show mutual respect for one another? Session 2: How can parents gain cooperation from their children? How can they avoid communication blocks? Session 3: How can parents create positive, effective discipline? What are some problem-handling models? What are some types of logical consequences? Session 4: What are the ‘building blocks’ of personality? How can parents better understand and redirect misbehavior? How can parents use anger positively? What are some family enrichment activities? Session 5: How can parents build courage, character, and self-esteem in their children? How can parents build on their children’s strengths? Session 6: How can parents be influencers of events? How can parents facilitate family communication? The sessions are designed, using the Active Parenting Now framework, to create a friendly, supportive setting in which parents can reflect on how their parenting style compares with that of their own parents, share strategies for managing family concerns, and discover new ways to help make family life happier according to the needs of group members.

Sessions will take place on Tuesdays from 8:30 am to 10:30 am (approximately) in the UNIS Hanoi Library Projection Room from Oct. 30-Dec. 11 (No class Nov. 13). If you are interested in joining the class, please contact the counseling office at [email protected] to sign

up. Numbers will be limited.

Notes from the PYP Coordinator

Decisions, Decisions

While teachers and parents were busy with parent teacher conferences on Tuesday, the Elementary School teaching assistants took part in a professional development workshop. The focus of the workshop was how to encourage problem solving and independence in UNIS Hanoi students. The workshop explored strategies which promote children to take a more active role in decision-making. This sets children up for success in the future as they move through school. Such approaches are often very simple, however for many of us making choices and decisions is not a memory of our own school days. In many cases, most school decisions were made by our teachers. In good schools nowadays, students are provided with opportunities to make decisions and to solve problems: decisions about the materials or methods they are to use, or perhaps to decide who will take which role in a group task. One simple decision-promoting strategy is to pose questions which scaffold a child’s thinking. Teachers do this rather than providing him or her with the answer immediately. As parents such circumstances are often very familiar, for example when your child has lost something you no doubt scaffold his/her thinking by asking ‘Where did you last use it?’ ‘Where did you go next?’ Like you, we use such questioning techniques to develop children’s problem solving skills at school ‘How do you think you could find out that answer?’ ‘What did you do last time you had this problem?’ Decision-making becomes a little more sophisticated as the child moves up the grades. We involve children in the process of determining success criteria for their assessments. The more we promote decision making the better the more independent and confident the child becomes. By the time they reach the Grade 5 PYP Exhibition the amount of decision-making and independence is often quite profound! As part of the workshop on Tuesday we explored the idea of coaching. Coaching is a practice used in all types of work places these days. Indeed it may be a practice used at your own place of work: where a supervisor or peer coaches a colleague. Basically the technique involves helping someone to organize his or her thoughts by active listening and careful questioning. In the photograph two teaching assistants are practicing this coaching technique with one another. One is pretending to be a therapist and the other pretending to be a patient with a problem. This activity was only for fun of course; coaching at school isn’t like therapy! The purpose was for teaching assistants to practice using questioning to organize a person’s thinking. This informal interaction between teaching assistant and student helps the child to make decisions to solve his or her own problems. If you are interested in learning more about the sort of teaching and learning which occurs at UNIS Hanoi Elementary School and our curriculum then please come to the parents’ Primary Years Programme (PYP) workshop on the 16th of October at 19:00 -20:00. This is aimed at parents who are unfamiliar with the PYP. The workshop will occur in the ‘Black Box’ which is the large drama rôm located in the Arts Centre. It will be a chance for you to have fun and experience a little about what we teach, how we teach and why. For any further information, please contact Christopher Frost, PYP Coordinator at [email protected].

Mums and Dads Learn to Read!

On Thursday Cathie Mathews - one of our Kindergarten teachers - led a mini workshop for parents with children in the early years section of the school. She was assisted by Julie Porter –a learning support teacher, Lucy Norton the Elementary School Literacy Coordinator and Jennifer Kelly appearing by video. The workshop was designed to help parents to help their child to learn to read. The key message of the workshop was that a parent’s role is to focus on the meaning of text and to focus on enjoyment. Cathie began with several provocations to get us thinking. One such example was the sentence below: There was a tear in his….. Of course that ‘tear’ could be a ‘tear drop’ in an eye or a ‘rip’ in a shirt. Cathie explained that either would be a good guess and therefore should be praised. This was one example of many in the workshop which expressed the importance of focusing on the meaning of the sentence rather than the conventions (phonics, punctuation and so on). This approach creates a sense of achievement, pleasure and encourages a love of reading. The grammar, phonics and conventions are important of course and are an integral part of the UNIS Hanoi reading programme, however the emphasis of parents’ feedback should be the meaning of the text and to promote enjoyment. Cathie described ‘The Parents Ps’ as a general guideline for to follow:

Pause: Give your child time to work out the unknown word

Prompt: E.g. look at the picture, or sound out the start of the word.

Praise: For understanding the meaning (even if they use the pictures) and praise the child for self-correction.

If you would like more tips on helping your child with reading, please speak to your child’s teacher.

Grade 10 Personal Project

As you know our grade 10 students are working on their MYP Personal Project. This is an independent inquiry into a topic of the student’s choice. Initially, we provided detailed guidance for students. Now they have reached a stage where they should be managing the project independently while still seeking regular support and feedback from the supervisor. Please visit the UNIS Hanoi Personal Project Blog for regular updates on what students should be thinking about as they proceed with their project. While this blog is predominantly written for students you may find it a useful source of information. Should you wish to subscribe to the blog simply enter your e-mail address in the appropriate field and press the ‘subscribe’ button.

There are three key dates students should keep in mind for the Personal Project:

November 14: Personal Project in Progress event (during advisory)

Grade 10 students share with grade 9 students what they have achieved so far. A fantastic opportunity for feedback!

March 11: Personal Project deadline

March 14: Personal Project exhibition, 18:00, parents will be invited!

The project consists of three key components:

Process journal (ongoing record of students’ thinking and planning about the project)

Report

We hope that your children are keeping you informed and wish them all the best with this project! Sibylle D. Harth, MYP Coordinator [email protected]

Reminder to Grade 10 Students and Parents

The Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test will be given to all 10th Graders on Wednesday, October 17.

The PSAT measures

Critical Reading skills

Math problem-solving skills

Writing skills

Students have developed these skills over many years, both in and out of school. These are skills needed to study anywhere in the world. This test doesn't require them to recall specific facts from classes so students who change educational systems are not disadvantaged.

When the results come in students and parents will meet with the counselors. You can receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. You can then focus your preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.

You can see how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others students around the world who will be applying to colleges.

Remember to get a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast.

I wish to apologize to everyone that has had issues with ISIS Family ASA sign-ups and ISIS Family Conference sign-ups in the past month. I have worked with the developer to fix issues with the programme including: ASA sign-ups used a time/date stamp from the local machine rather than the server when listing

Activity sign-ups. The order of sign-up was based on the server time/date stamp therefore the listing was correct. In the future the server time/date stamp will be displayed in ISIS Family.

The “error message” that appeared for MSHS sign-ups was meaningless and not helpful. The error message has been re-written to provide information that will direct you toward resolution when it appears.

I requested a complete re-write of the Silverlight version required for MAC access to ISIS Family. It is scheduled for completion and testing in the next two weeks.

System code has been rewritten to prevent loss of conference time slots when changes are made to schedules.

Log files have been implemented in order to track “Changed By” and “Change Date/Time”.

Some MACs fail to download the latest version of Silverlight. We have not found the cause but will continue to recommend a workaround using http://microsoft.com/getSilverlight.

I want to thank the MSHS Office and especially the secretaries for the huge efforts they made to manage the issues we encountered. Two recent hard drive failures have happened to people that are not backing-up regularly.

Please continue to show that parents are teaming with UNIS Hanoi by reminding your children to back-up ALL files regularly.

Notes from the Speech and Language Therapist

Following the October Break, I will be completing hearing screenings for all students in Discovery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten. The ability to hear properly is an important component in developing speech and language skills and for learning in general. As such, early detection of hearing loss is vital so that each child is able to get the full benefit of language learning experiences both within, and outside, the classroom.

The most common cause of hearing loss in children is otitis media (glue ear). Fluctuating hearing loss nearly always occurs with otitis media, whether or not the fluid is infected, due to the anatomy of the middle ear and the Eustachian tube. A build-up of fluid in the middle ear prohibits the movement of the bones which transmit sound from the ear drum to the inner ear. Ongoing fluid in the middle ear can cause permanent hearing loss. The hearing screening is not a full audiological test which measures the softest sounds you are able to hear. The screening test measures whether or not you are able to hear at a level necessary to hear the sounds used in spoken language. Three sounds (low, medium, and high pitched) will be presented in each ear at the same loudness level.

The majority of children will not have difficulty hearing all six tones and these children will be considered to have passed the screening. You will not receive individual notification that your child has passed the screening. You will however receive notification when your child’s class has completed the screening. If your child does not hear one or more of the sounds, you will be notified individually and one to two weeks later, your child will be re-screened. Following the re-screening, you will be notified if your child passed the screening or not. It is possible that your child may not have been able to hear all the tones even during the re-screening. If this is the case, you will be asked to have your child’s hearing tested by an Audiologist or Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor (ENT) and to provide the school with a copy of the report. The school is able to provide referrals to community resources where the hearing test can be completed. I look forward to meeting with all the children in the ECC over the course of the next couple weeks. Please be in touch if you have any questions or concerns either prior to the screenings or after. Hello to the UNIS Hanoi Community from the Green Team,

Last year the Buildings and Facilities Committee began looking at ways to help make UNIS a more environmentally friendly school. This year, as part of the 25 year birthday celebrations, UNIS Hanoi will be launching our Sustainable School Programme.

Last Saturday was “Green Apple Day of Service”, an international event that saw more than 1200 schools and communities in over 40 countries engaged in various activities that promote environmental awareness and support healthy, sustainable schools (for more information about the U.S. Green Building Council’s “Green Apple Day of Service”, please visit this link). As part of this global event, UNIS Hanoi began a process to launch our Sustainable School Programme by setting up a display of “The Green Grid “ in the Library and asking for help from the students, staff and community.

At this stage, our goal is to document all the existing things that UNIS Hanoi is currently doing that are good for the environment. Knowing what we are already doing will help us understand how we can support existing activities and introduce new ones to make UNIS a more sustainable school. The Green Grid is a chart of all the different areas that we think need to be considered when trying to make a school more sustainable. We’re using the structure of the chart as a framework for collecting this information. We’ve posed the question, “Where are you on the Grid?” Are you doing anything in your classes that helps promote environmental awareness? Are you working on a Service Learning Unit that is good for the environment? Are you part of a committee or group that is working to make the school a healthier place? All this week students and staff have been coming to the library and posting their comments, showing us what they’ve been doing.

The next step will be for us to document all the comments that we’ve collected and use this information to establish our baselines and goals for the Sustainable School program. The Green Grid is a “work in progress”, and we look forward to talking about it with the staff, students and the community over the course of this academic year.

If you have any questions or comments about the Sustainable School Program, please contact our new Sustainability Consultant, Scott Edwards at [email protected].

Look for updates on our progress and Green Tips in Tin Tuc each week. We’re looking forward to an exciting year of working together to make UNIS a more sustainable school!

The Green Grid

Green Grid in Action

With the UNIS Hanoi Sustainability Programme well under way, the Green Team have been getting involved in all manner of ways. For last Friday's SCO social, a huge vinyl banner was required to decorate the stage of the Press Club. Normally these banners go to waste when the event which they are used for is over. But Grade 12 student Emilie Brondhum Reeh has other ideas. Back in Grade 10 Emilie created necklaces from recycled materials for her Personal Project. Since then, her operation has expanded and now she transforms all sorts of trash from around Hanoi into all kinds of jewelry, accessories and more recently computer bags. Emilie says' "The Computer Bags are created from banners which are donated to us by local buisnesses. They are cut up and then a local disabled group of very talented craftsmen currently working at Donkey Donuts create the bags. In the past the bags have been sold at the UNIS Hanoi Spring Fair where people have the opportunity to buy them ready-made, we also have customised orders with specific requirements in order for it to be the best possible bag for you. You can specify the size and choose the banner you would like the bag to be made from." Inspired by this, the UNIS Hanoi Green Team and the SCO worked with Emilie to design a very special banner which has been divided up into 35 unique sections. Last Friday evening, party-goers had the opportunity to purchase a section of the banner which Emilie will have made into individually designed bags. This is one banner that won't be going in the trash! (There are still some sections remaining – if you would like to purchase a section of the banner to be made into a high quality padded bag or computer bag for VND300,000 contact Jody O’Dea [email protected] – 100% of the cost of the bag goes to it’s manufacture).

News from the School Community Organisation

All Parents Meeting The first general SCO meeting held in the Library projection room on the 25th of September was well supported, with approximately 45 people in attendance, including many class parents (draft minutes here). Principals Pete Kennedy and Carole Denny introduced themselves and Dr. Barder introduced our new Director of Finance Len Archer. Members of the SCO executive introduced themselves as well as members of SCO committees. The topics discussed included the upcoming school social, UN Day, the Book sale, Snack Sale and the SCO Boutique.

SCO Parent Staff Social - We did partied like we were 25! We were all feeling like we were 25 last Friday night when the UNIS Hanoi SCO kicked off a year of celebrations with our fabulous “Party like you are 25! ” community event that rocked down town Hanoi! We were greeted with a huge banner designed by Jody O'Dea, and "The Terrace" decked out in matching pink, purple and green balloons which set a slightly retro mood. Guests enjoyed freely flowing beverages and tasty appetizers, caught up with old friends and met new comers, while listening to some great jazz from our own "Hot Guys Band" featuring the talented Long, Cau, Huy, Fa, and Dung. Pippa, Peppi and Sally surprised everyone with a fun accapella rendition of the popular Pink song "Raise Your Glass", followed by Zippy D and the band playing a set of Zippy's own original songs and cover songs with a twist. Once the dancing started there was no stopping - we conquered zumba, conga lines, and carefree moves. One of the highlights of the evening was singing "Happy Birthday", followed by a huge balloon drop from the ceiling above. By popular demand, Dr Barder was called to the stage to perform, and we all joined in with" Mustang Sally". The partying didn't stop until we absolutely had to, as our own hip to the hop DJ, Jody O’Dea spun some great tunes that kept us rocking. Our promised lucky draw was held off until the following Monday, so as not to stop the dancing. The party pictures tell the story of our high spirits! Thank you to The Press Club, The Intercontinental Hotel, Hanoi Westlake. Donkey Bakery, L. Shell Designs, The Vine Restaurant, Asia Pro Golf, SCO Boutique, TA Hair and Beauty, JAFA for providing some great birthday gift giveaways, and to Southgate for after party fun. Thank you to everyone who helped make the night a success - we can't wait for next time! Winners in the Lucky Draw were pulled from a hat by 11th Graders and all winners have been informed by email. Notes from the Director of Activities

APAC Teams Top the Hanoi Classic On September 28-29 UNIS Hanoi played host to the Hanoi Classic HS Volleyball Tournament. Play began on Friday after school and continued all day on Saturday in the UNIS Hanoi Sports Center, with boys and girls teams playing through a series of round robin matches before advancing to play-offs and finals. In the girls division, UNIS Hanoi was represented by three teams – UNIS Hanoi Blue (coached by Ms. Mills), UNIS Hanoi MRISA (coached by Mr. Hough) and UNIS Hanoi APAC (coached by Ms. Sauvage-Mar & Ms. Kraetzer). Visiting teams from Hanoi International School (HIS) and Lomonoxop High School (LHS) joined the three host teams. All teams showed noticeable improvement over the course of their five matches. In an exciting match for 3rd/4th place, the UNIS Hanoi MRISA team came from being one set behind to earn a victory over the UNIS Hanoi Blue team, winning 2 sets to 1. The Girls Championship match featured the undefeated UNIS Hanoi APAC team and their cross-town rivals from HIS, whose only loss had come at the hands of the APAC Hanoi team. These two teams had already played each other a number of times leading up the tournament, and there seemed little to choose between them. In the end, the APAC girls were just a bit too strong and claimed the 1st Place trophy. Congratulations girls! Although their success was definitely a combined team effort, their coaches wanted to recognize a few individual players for their contributions. Team captains, Laura Ramoso and Ayaka Yokoyama, excelled not only in their game play, but also in their leadership of the team. Their positive, encouraging attitudes are infectious and spread throughout the team. Tiara Le Calvez is also to be commended for maintaining her focus and nerve while serving out two tough sets. On the boys’ side of the tournament, four teams battled it out to be crowned the 2012 Hanoi Classic Champion. By late Saturday afternoon, two teams stood out over the others. In a repeat of last year’s final, the Championship was contested between HIS and UNIS Hanoi APAC (coached by Mr. Moyale and Mr. Mills). The team that probably showed the greatest improvement during the tournament was the UNIS Hanoi MRISA boys’ team. After having pushed HIS to their very limit in the semi-final, the MRISA team came away victorious in the match for 3rd place with their 2nd match win over LHS. The MRISA team wants to thank Mr. McHale and Mr. Fairburn for stepping in as coaches during to the tournament. The boys Championship final was a fitting way to end the tournament. Much like the opponents in the girls’ final, the boys team from HIS and the UNIS Hanoi Boys APAC team had already met each other a few times since the start of the season, and the two teams were very evenly matched. After splitting the first two sets, everything came down to the deciding third set. There was a good crowd of spectators on hand in the Sports Center to witness the final match of the tournament. Led by their setter, Hauke Schmidt, the UNIS Hanoi team managed to prevail over their opponents, making it a clean sweep for the APAC teams. Well done, boys! The UNIS Hanoi APAC teams will be traveling to Taejon Christian International School for their APAC tournament on October 25-28. The MRISA tournament will be contested at the International School of Phnom Penh on November 8-11. Good luck to all of the UNIS Hanoi HS volleyball teams as their seasons continue!
