Notes from the Head of School

Dear Parents, I would like to invite all parents for Breakfast with me next Friday, 26 October from 08:15 - 09:00 in the Community Room. After a short introduction session looking at the targets of our Annual Action Plan, I would like to invite participants to share their questions or concerns in an open meeting format. Coffee, tea and refreshments will be served so please consider joining me next Friday morning for a few minutes after dropping off the kids. Refreshments will be ready at 08:00. Respectfully, Dr. Chip Barder, Head of School

Notes from the Middle/High School Principal

Dear MS/HS Families, I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing break! I am happy to report that MSHS students and teachers reported back to school on Monday full of enthusiasm and good cheer.

October 26 marks the end of the first quarter marking period. As such both students and teachers are busy taking care of end of quarter assessments and projects. Teachers will calculate grades and they should be available to parents through ISIS during the first week of November. More information will follow in the coming weeks.

You may notice a slight increase in academic stress at different times during the year. The ebb and flow of assignments, projects, and assessments is normal for students. Please be aware of this cycle by staying involved and monitoring your child’s workload. Academic requirements can cause stress but developing proper work habits and organizational skills can keep the situation under control. As parents please model a balanced lifestyle and encourage your child to be proactive working steadily each night to avoid falling behind.

I would like to thank all the Grade Level Parents who attended a brief orientation meeting this week. Parent involvement is always encouraged and I will use the collective wisdom of this group as a sounding board for MSHS initiatives. One of the goals of the MSHS Grade Parent group is to build community among parents. Please take opportunities to share information and socialize with other parents. It is a great way share ideas and have a bit of fun!

I would like to thank the following parents for volunteering to be Grade Level Parents: HS Chair: Philippa Wood MS Chair: Adriana Vembriani Bone MS Vice Chair: Petra Eichler

UN Day Celebration, one of the biggest events of the UNIS Hanoi calendar, will be held on Tuesday 23rd of October. The culminating event for the day is the international potluck lunch which is enjoyed by students, staff and parents. It is truly international and fun! Our shared lunch is provided by parents and is again an opportunity for you to showcase your nationality. Many parents bring in their favorite national dish or something that is popular in their home country. All parents and family members are welcome and encouraged to attend the luncheon which will start at 12:00 noon. Food Preparation Guidelines

Prepare one plate of food to serve 10 people (servings) for each of your child’s classroom.

Prepare food that does not require refrigeration or need to be heated.

Prepare food that can be easily served and can be eaten with fingers or forks — no soupy or runny dishes.

Do not bring any food that contains nuts of any kind; no peanuts, cashews, walnuts, almonds, etc or peanut oil or peanut products because of severe allergies.

Label the food with name and country of origin; decorate the plate/food with flags or ribbons. List the ingredients of your food for dietary restrictions and allergies (please see the sample below).

If you bring food on a serving plate, please collect it after the lunch is finished so it is not misplaced. It is recommended to clearly mark it with your child’s name and homeroom. Many people made a disposable serving container using a small cardboard container lined with foil which is then decorated to serve their food.

If your dish requires a serving spoon or fork, please provide.

More appetizers and main courses are required than desserts.

UNIS Hanoi will provide: plates, napkins, cups, and forks. Children will have their water bottles and parents are welcome to bring their own non-alcoholic drinks. Drinking cups and water will be available for everyone. Please bring your dish to the following rooms between 08:00—09:30.

Active Parenting NoW

Classes for Parents of Children Ages 5-12

Starts October 30th!

There are two lasting bequests we can give our children. One is roots. The other is wings.

~Hodding Carter, Jr., Author and Journalist ~

What is your parenting style? How about your partner's? Parenting is extremely important, but can be challenging at some point or another. Fortunately, by learning how to enhance our parenting skills, cooperation from our children comes more naturally. There's a lot of evidence to show that authoritative and positive parenting has enormous benefits. UNIS Hanoi will be offering Active Parenting Classes, a video-based series, to help facilitate more effective family communication and cooperation. Topics covered during the six week sessions include:

Topics: Session 1: What is the purpose of parenting? What methods of choice can parents provide for their children? How can families show mutual respect for one another? Session 2: How can parents gain cooperation from their children? How can they avoid communication blocks? Session 3: How can parents create positive, effective discipline? What are some problem-handling models? What are some types of logical consequences? Session 4: What are the ‘building blocks’ of personality? How can parents better understand and redirect misbehavior? How can parents use anger positively? What are some family enrichment activities? Session 5: How can parents build courage, character, and self-esteem in their children? How can parents build on their children’s strengths? Session 6: How can parents be influencers of events? How can parents facilitate family communication? The sessions are designed, using the Active Parenting Now framework, to create a friendly, supportive setting in which parents can reflect on how their parenting style compares with that of their own parents, share strategies for managing family concerns, and discover new ways to help make family life happier according to the needs of group members.

Sessions will take place on Tuesdays from 8:30 am to 10:30 am (approximately) in the UNIS Hanoi Library Projection Room from Oct. 30-Dec. 11 (No class Nov. 13). If you are interested in joining the class, please contact the counseling office at [email protected] to sign

up. Numbers will be limited.

Notes from the PYP Coordinator

Dads Discovering, Mums Uncovering Memories from the PYP Parents Workshop

On Tuesday evening we had a great turnout for the first Primary Years Programme (PYP) Parents’ Workshop of the academic year. This particular workshop was aimed at parents who are new to the PYP. As promised, mums and dads were given opportunities to actually experience what the PYP is like for children at UNIS Hanoi. Yes, they were sent back to their childhood, only this time the teaching methods were a little different! Parents were put into small groups and were set challenges. These challenges were designed for parents to discover and work out what teaching and learning is like for their children. In one example the mums and dads had to sort teaching strategies. They had to put these strategies in order according to how much thinking they felt was involved. Parents soon discovered that not only were they finding out about the sort of teaching and learning we have here at UNIS Hanoi, but they were also experiencing it! Mums and Dads realized that they had to think critically, argue their case with their friends, compromise in a group situation, explain their reasoning, listen to others and a whole range of inquiry skills. Such skills are crucial in today’s world: in clubs, societies, and of course when working with others in the work place. It was great to see so many parents actively involved, grinning, questioning, chatting and working enthusiastically as they undertook the challenges. Sadly as we were all working so hard, I forgot to take any photographs. So instead I have here a few visual examples from the presentation to give you an idea of what you (perhaps) missed. If you have any particular questions about the elementary school programme or a particular workshop you would like me to organize I would be very happy to do so. I look forward to our next PYP workshop for parents which will be advertised here in TinTuc. Watch this space and make sure next time you join in the fun! Christopher Frost, PYP Coordinator at [email protected].

An important part of the UNIS Hanoi Visual Art IB Diploma programme is for students to participate in a variety of artistic and cultural experiences. One form of this experience is to undertake field trips to key venues and to view a variety of artworks. On Tuesday 16th October the grade 11 and 12 Art Diploma students travelled to several art galleries in the old quarter for a half day field trip with the aim of researching local art & artists. We discussed approaches to viewing and analyzing art thus enabling students to independently view art galleries in the future, an important component of the IB Visual Arts Diploma curriculum. King Lear at UNIS Hanoi

Family Conflict – Shakespeare’s at UNIS Hanoi

How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless child! (1.4.312)

UNIS Hanoi is proud to be hosting the American Drama Group Europe’s version of King Lear by William Shakespeare. This production will be staged in the new Performing Arts Complex on 30th October 1.00pm-3.00pm for High School students, Grade 10 -12. Arguably one of the darkest of Shakespeare’s tragedies and perhaps his most profound, this production promises to be magnificent. The unwieldy text is streamlined and sharply focused to create a unique theatrical event that blends live music, spectacular imagery and thrilling action. Some familiar characters and scenes are cut but the heart of the play is revealed. The actors themselves play cello, violin, percussion and sing stunning five part harmony. The production has been acclaimed by public and critics alike from Tokyo to Berlin and Malta to Oslo. Background Lear, the aging king of Britain, in an attempt to avoid future strife, decides to step down from the throne and divide his kingdom evenly among his three daughters. First, however, he puts his daughters through a test, asking each to tell him how much she loves him. Goneril (wife of Albany) and Regan (wife of Cornwall), Lear’s older daughters, give their father flattering answers. But Cordelia, Lear’s youngest and favorite daughter, remains silent, saying that she has no words to describe how much she loves her father. Lear flies into a rage and disowns Cordelia. Period written: 1605 First known performance: December 26, 1606 Tickets and Information for the Opera House Performance TNT Theatre Britain will also be performing King Lear at the Opera House on 31/10/2012. If you are interested in seeing the Opera House Performance please contact (4) 3747 8658 or email [email protected] or [email protected] For further information regarding the UNIS performance please contact [email protected] Emma Collins, HOD Language A [email protected]

UNIS Hanoi Student Documentary Goes Global!

A short documentary made by Dehaja Senanayake (Grade 12), Tae Jun Park (Grade 10), and Anna Muchlichen (Class of 2012) has just premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival to two sold out audiences! Last year, Erica Kohn and Mark Vonesch – the founders of Reel Youth – spent 5 weeks on campus working with students from grades 4 – 12. In that time, they travelled to Sapa with a small group of high school students to make biographic documentaries about children at the Sin Chai elementary school. Other groups also worked with established CAS projects to document some of the amazing individuals that they work with on a regular basis. All of these films, including the one showcased at the film festival (My Name is Vang A Lu), can be found on the Reel Youth website. Congratulations to Dehaja, Tae Jun and Anna!

From the Nurse Office...

Flu season is approaching, protect yourself and others! THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING A FLU VACCINATION

By getting the flu vaccine you can protect yourself from influenza and may also avoid spreading influenza to others.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can be mild to severe and can even lead to hospitalization and death.

The main way that the disease spreads is by respiratory droplets in coughs, sneezes and nasal secretions.

Some people such as the elderly, pregnant women, young children and individuals with certain long term medical conditions such as asthma, heart disease and diabetes, as well as those who have a weakened immune system, are at serious risk of complications from the flu.

VACCINATION: THE FACTS

The flu vaccine is approved for use in people older than 6 months, including healthy people and people with chronic medical conditions.

Yearly vaccination is important because the flu virus is constantly changing.

Flu vaccine protects against the 3 main viruses which research indicates will cause the most illnesses that season.

Flu vaccines CANNOT cause the flu. The viruses in flu shots are not live. The flu vaccine works by priming your body's defenses in case you are exposed to an actual flu virus.

Flu vaccines are safe. Serious problems from the flu vaccine are very rare. The most common side effect that a per-son is likely to experience is soreness where the injection was given. This is generally mild and usually goes away after a day or two.

You should NOT get the flu shot if you have a severe allergy to egg or have ever had an allergic reaction to a previous flu shot. http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-flu.pdf This year’s flu vaccination is available at: SOS Clinic (04 39340666),

Family Medical Practice (04 38430748),

The National Vaccination Centre of Hanoi (50C Hang Bai Street Hanoi – 04 38229263)

as well as at many other health care providers.
