Problem being attempted to change: To solve the problem of Drug

Addiction amongst teenage group of the village by making them aware of

its menace.

• Bharti Foundation

– Bharti Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Bharti Group Companies.

– The prime objective is to bridge the existing education divide and make quality education accessible to underprivileged children in rural India.

– The Foundation aims to help underprivileged children and young people of our country realize their potential.

• Satya Bharti Sr. Sec.School Program

– The Satya Bharti School Program is the flagship program of Bharti Foundation in collaboration with the govt. of Punjab.

– It aims to deliver free quality education to underprivileged children, with special focus on the girl child across rural India.

– Bharti Foundation is committed to creating and supporting that programs that bring about sustainable changes through education and technology.

Introduction

About the Community

• Geographical Location: Sherpur Kalan is at a distance of 8 km from Jagraon, -a village backward in many respects. Sherpur Kalan is itself a Gram Panchayat in Block Sidhwan Bet, District Ludhiana. The majority of population is of SC and ST.

• Role of Satya Bharti School in the Village: Govt. Satya Bharti Adarsh Sr. Sec.School, Sherpur Kalan worked as a catalyst of change for the caste based divided communities of the village. There was many initial challenges but we faced it. As a result we have 363 students from the very backward community. We always focus on changing the belief system of the people and encouraged them to think for their children.

• Participation in ‘Design for Giving’ School Contest: The students were asked to find out the problem in their village which bothers them the most and they want that problem to change of their own. The students came up with the innovative ideas to take that challenge.

Many teenagers of the village are drug addicts and they miss their schools frequently because of this. The parents of these children are also drug addicts and are least bothered about their children. Some of the students even don’t go to the school though they are enrolled in the govt. school.

There are some parents who want their children to be free from this evil but were helpless so instead of sending them to the school, they used to send them for work to avoid them from this menace.

The children of this community earn some money for their daily expenses and if they will go in the school then it will increase economic & social problem at their homes.

We ‘Felt’:

If we want to make a change then it is compulsory to get the students in the school. For that the students met the targeted children and allured them to the schooling by giving examples of their own school and encouraged them to get back to their schools for their own good.

Students after interacting with the students felt that the teenage group doesn’t want to go to school due to the boredom and no games or activities in the school. Students convinced those children saying, "if you will go to school, we will together conduct a kabbadi match in the village but on a condition that we all will represent our respective school. This idea worked well.

We will march to the village community with “Anti Drug Addiction Rally” and give our message to the villagers.

We will go to their homes and meet them to make them understand our aim and their long benefit.

We will try to convince all the people of our village to support us.

We will take help of the village panchayat to remove this evil from the village by making the village “Drug Free Village”

We ‘Imagined’:

• We organized a rally to deliver our message to the community.

• We met the parents to convince them.• We try to tell them the importance of our

aim.• We submitted a written request to the

village Panchayat to remove this evil from the village .

We ‘Did’:

At the beginning, we organized a rally to spread our message in the village.

Parents and the community members welcomed this march of the school and encouraged their children to be regular to the school and leave this evil.

The panchayat and people of general community promised us to support , listed out those children and sent them back to their schools.

We talked to the govt. school teachers to take those children in the school. The students got the children admitted in the local govt. school of the village

Impact on Community:

• Students are excited and happy to take this initiative.

• Can plan and implement.• Ignited the feeling of ownership among

the students• There is now more association and

bonding among students/villagers.• Students displayed good confidence in

the process of execution and implementation.

• Students got appreciation from the village Panchayat which boosted up their morale.

Impact on Us:

Yes, we can do it and we did it

Experience of Community Members & Teachers:

• S. Davinder Singh Khela, Sarpanch – Saanu bahut wadia laga ke bache hi bacheya no school jaan lai te nashe chadan lai prarit kar rahe han. Asi ehan bacheya nu is kam lai wadai didnde haan. Ehan bacheya de kehan te, asi vi ohne bacheya nu school bhejan da program banaya hai atte jalad hi ehna bacheya lai asi pind vich kheda da vi parbahand kar rahe ha.

• Hardeep Kaur – We are very happy to help those children through

our students. I am happy that our students are bringing change with their own ideas. They are more confident now.

• Vivek Tiwari(VP) & Staff – The idea of alluring the children to their schools and deviating them from drug addiction by encouraging them for sports, was commendable and I liked it the most. They very well imagined the way to help those children. I am happy for the endeavor of my students.

• On our community service days we will ask the parents/Community members about the other/same problem.

• The school students will keep on interacting with those students and will motivate them to do good in their studies.

• The students will organize a friendly match with the students to encourage them for sports and studies.

• We will keep meeting the Sarpanch and panchayat for making efforts to make this village- a drug free village.
