Introduction of Indian Aviation Industry

India is expected to be amongst the top five nations in the world in the next 10 years in the

aviation sector. On the sidelines of the International Civil Aviation Negotiation (ICAN)

Conference, Ms Pratibha Patel, President of India highlighted that currently, India is the 9th

largest civil aviation market in the world. "Recent estimates suggest that domestic air traffic will

touch 160-180 million passengers a year, in the next 10 years and the international traffic will

exceed 80 million passengers a year," added Ms Patil.

India is poised to emerge as the third largest aviation market in the world by the end of this

decade, according to Dr Nasim Zaidi, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation. The sector with a

growth of 18 per cent in domestic market is expected to generate approximately 2.6 million

jobs in the next one decade, added Dr Zaidi.

In addition, the US-based electrical components company, Eaton Corporation foresees plenty of

opportunities for itself in India's unfolding civil and military aerospace story. "India is expected

to emerge as one of the largest aviation markets in the world," according to Joe-Tao Zhou,

APAC President, Aerospace Group, Eaton Corporation.

Moreover, the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in New Delhi, India, has been ranked the

second-best airport in the world for 2011 by the Airports Council International. The airport

scored this distinction in the category of airports with 25-40 million passengers per annum. The

IGI airport handled a record number of 35 million passengers in 2011. The airport has an annual

passenger capacity of over 60 million of which terminal 3 can alone handle 34 million

passengers. In addition, the airport also handled over 600,000 tons of cargo and over 300,000

aircraft movements in 2011.

International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO )

As a contracting State, India has played a very proactive role in initiatives of ICAO. India has

participates in environment related endeavors and supports the view that any such global

initiatives should be under the aegis of ICAO.

India is a member of Group on International Aviation Climate Change (GIACC), which deals with

issues of standards and measures to reduce the emissions and is also a member of Committee

on Aviation Environment Programme (CAEP). India has implemented the Standards and

Recommended Practices (SARPs) adopted by ICAO and actively participates in the formulation

of regulations based on these standards.

Indian Aviation Market Size

The rapidly expanding aviation sector in India handles 2.5 billion passengers across the world in

a year; moves 45 million tonnes (MT) of cargo through 920 airlines, using 4,200 airports and

deploys 27,000 aircraft. Today, 87 foreign airlines fly to and from India and five Indian carriers

fly to and fro from 40 countries.

Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January 2012 was recorded at 5.33 million as

against 4.94 million during the corresponding period of previous year thereby registering a

growth of 8.06 per cent, according to data released by the Directorate General Civil Aviation

(DGCA).

The air transport (including air freight) in India has attracted foreign direct investment (FDI)

worth US$ 429.70 million from April 2000 to December 2011, as per data released by

Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

Private carriers are anticipated to post a combined profit of US$ 350 million – US$ 400 million

for the financial year ending March 31, 2012, according to a report titled, '2011-12 Aviation

Industry Outlook' by Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) India. The firm expects the domestic

traffic to grow as high as 20 per cent. International passenger numbers, which grew by about 10

per cent last year, are expected to increase towards the upper end of a 10-12 per cent range

over the next 12 months.

Rise in Air traffic

There is a sea change from 500 departures a week in the country in 1994 before deregulation,

to nearly 15,000 departures daily - a 30 times jump. Today 87 foreign airlines fly to and from

India and five Indian carriers fly to and from 40 countries.

In the last decade, domestic air traffic has quadrupled from 13 million to 52 million and

international traffic more than tripled to 38 million. A similar trend is observed in the cargo

sector, she added.

The rapidly expanding aviation sector handles 2.5 billion passengers across the world in a year;

moves 45 million tonnes of cargo through 920 airlines, using 4,200 airports and deploying

27,000 aircraft.

She highlighted the importance of an economic regulator to create a level playing field, to

promote competition, protect consumer interests and ensure better service levels.

“One of the key achievements of India in the last decade has been to set-up an independent

regulator for economic regulation of airports by an Act of Parliament, with appropriate

provision of an appellate body” said President Patil.

Recent Developments

The IGI Airport in New Delhi has been categorised as the most lucrative retail location for luxury

brands like Swarovski, Marks & Spencer (M&S), Hidesign and many more. The airport has

generated sales of 5,000 per square feet per month in 2011. It is the largest and busiest airport

in South Asia. More than 35 million passengers used it last year. It is the fourth largest retail

Government Initiatives

The Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India (GOI), has decided to allow the Indian

Scheduled Carriers including Air India to utilise the allocated bilateral till the time they reach

the maximum permissible limit under Air Service Agreements (ASAs). Air India's operational

plan will receive due consideration in allocation of the traffic rights and entitlements. The

Ministry has also supported the approach outlined in the Inter Ministerial Group (IMG)

discussion paper in this context.

Keeping in view the recent developments in the civil aviation sector and in order to modernise

and update the existing Air Services Agreements (ASAs) with foreign countries as per the ICAO

templates, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has signed ASAs with Indonesia and Brazil, besides

initialising ASAs with Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Mozambique, Uganda, Trinidad and Tobago.

The Group of Ministers (GOM) on Civil Aviation, in its meeting held on February 7, 2012, has

decided that Ministry of Commerce may permit direct import of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) by

or on behalf of Indian Carriers as actual users and on actual use basis.

The Government's open sky policy has attracted many foreign players to enter the market and

the industry is growing in terms of players and the number of aircrafts. Given the strong market

fundamentals, the civil aviation market is expected that it will register a compound annual

growth rate (CAGR) of more than 16 per cent during 2010-2013.

The Government has taken various steps towards structural policy reforms and is coming out

with new policies which are liberal and will encourage public-private partnerships (PPP)

Government of India allows 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) for green field airports,

via the automatic route. Moreover, foreign investment up to 74 per cent is permissible through

direct approvals while special permissions are required for 100 per cent investment

Private investors are allowed to set up general airports and captive airstrips while maintaining a

distance of 150 kms from the existing ones. Complete tax exemption is also granted for 10

years

Page 7: Indian aviation industry overview

About 49 per cent FDI is allowed for investment in domestic scheduled passenger airlines and

investment up to 100 per cent by non-resident Indians (NRI) via the automatic route. FDI up to

74 per cent is allowed for non-scheduled and cargo airlines

Opportunities in Aviation Industry:

1. Foreign equity allowed: Without any Government approval, foreign equity up to 49 per cent

and NRI (Non-Resident Indian) investment up to 100 per cent is allowable in domestic airlines.

2. Low entry barriers: Nowadays, to launch an airline venture capital of $10 million or less is

enough. Private airlines are hiring foreign pilots, get expatriates or retired personnel from the

Air Force or PSU airlines in senior management positions.

3. Attraction of foreign shores: Many private players like Jet and Sahara have gone international

by starting operations, first to SAARC countries, and then to South-East Asia, the UK, and the US

and many more domestic airlines too will be entitled to fly overseas by using unutilized bilateral

entitlements to Indian carriers.

4. Rising income levels and demographic profile: As compared to the developed country

standards, India's GDP (per capita) at $3,100 is still very low but as India is shining, at least in

metro cities and urban centres, where IT and BPO industries have made the young generation

prosperous. Demographically, In India people in age group of 20-50 among its 50 million strong

middle class, has the highest percentage with high earning potential. It contributes the boost in

domestic air travel, particularly from a low base of 18 million passengers.

5. Untapped potential of India's tourism: Presently India attracts 3.2 million tourists every year,

while China gets 10 times the number. Due to the open sky policy Tourist arrivals in India are

expected to grow exponentially.

6. Glamour of the airlines: An airline is as glamorous as the film-making industry. Today Airline

tycoons, like J. R. D. Tata and Howard Hughes, Sir Richard Branson, Dr. Vijaya Mallya, have been

idolized. Airlines have an aura of glamour around them, and high net worth individuals can

always toy with the idea of owning an airline.

Page 8: Indian aviation industry overview

Challenges for Aviation Industry

There are several challenges in front of aviation industry because of the growth in the aviation

sector and capacity expansion by carriers. These include shortage of workers and professionals,

safety concerns, declining income and the lack of accompanying capacity and infrastructure.

Moreover, stiff competition and rising fuel costs are also negatively impacting the industry.

1. Shortage of trained Employee: There is a shortage of trained and skilled manpower in the

aviation sector as a result of which there is cut-throat competition for employees which, in turn,

is driving wages to unsustainable levels. Moreover, the industry is unable to retain talented

employees.

2. Regional connectivity: To provide regional connectivity is one of the biggest challenges facing

the aviation sector in India. The lack of airports is hampering the growth of regional

connectivity.

3. Rising fuel prices: As fuel prices have risen, the inverse relationship between fuel prices and

airline stock prices has been established. Moreover, it also led to increase in the air fares.

4. Declining yields: As more players are attracted towards Aviation industry because of

increasing growth prospects it will lead to more competition. All this has resulted in lower

returns for all operators.

5. Gaps in infrastructure: Airport and air traffic control (ATC) infrastructure is insufficient to

support growth. While a initiate has been made to upgrade the infrastructure, the results will

be visible only after some years.

6. High input costs: The input costs are also very high because of some of the reasons like

Withholding tax on interest repayments on foreign currency loans for aircraft acquisition.

Increasing manpower costs due to shortage of technical personnel.

Page 9: Indian aviation industry overview

Road Ahead

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has released the Vision-2020 document, which is an assessment of

the overall outlook of the aviation sector in 2020. It highlights that the aviation sector has a

growth potential to absorb upto US$ 120 billion of investment. Furthermore, the fleet size of

commercial airlines sector will be approximately 1,000 aircraft, domestic passenger numbers

could reach 150-180 million, helicopter fleet is expected to be 500, while the air cargo

movement is expected to reach the level of 9 million metric tonnes (MMT).

The aviation sector is one of the major economic drivers for prosperity, development and

employment in the country. Massive investments in airport infrastructure have led to world

class airports which have become the symbol of India's growth story.

At present, Jet Airways is the market leader in Indian Aviation industry. So lets discuss about it in brief.

Jet Airways

Overview

Jet Airways is the largest Indian airline based out of Mumbai, Maharashtra. It operates over 400

flights daily to 76 destinations worldwide. Its main hub is Mumbai, with secondary hubs at

Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Cochin, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru. It has an international hub at

Brussels Airport, Belgium. Jet Airways is owned by Naresh Goyal. Jet Airways was incorporated

as an air taxi operator on 1 April 1992. It started commercial operations on 5 May 1993 with a

fleet of four leased Boeing 737-300 aircraft. In January 1994 a change in the law enabled Jet

Airways to apply for scheduled airline status, which was granted on 4 January 1995. It began

international operations from Chennai to Colombo in March 2004. The company is listed on the

Page 11: Indian aviation industry overview

Bombay Stock Exchange, but 80% of its stock is controlled by Naresh Goyal (through his

ownership of Jet’s parent company, Tailwinds). It has 10,017 employees (as at March 2007).

Jet Airways is the only Indian company in Airline industry having fleet size of more than 100

aircrafts.

Products of Jet

1)Jet Airaways: Naresh Goyal – who already owned Jetair (Private) Limited, which

provided sales and marketing for foreign airlines in India – set up Jet Airways as a full-service

scheduled airline to compete against state-owned Indian Airlines. Indian Airlines had enjoyed a

monopoly in the domestic market between 1953, when all major Indian air transport providers

were nationalised under the Air Corporations Act (1953), and January 1994, when the Air

Corporations Act was repealed, following which Jet Airways received scheduled airline status.

That’s how the Jet Airways came into existence.

2)JetLite: In January 2006 Jet Airways announced that it would buy Air Sahara for US$500

million in an all-cash deal, making it the biggest takeover in Indian aviation history. It would

have resulted in the country's largest airline but the deal fell through in June 2006. After that

Air sahara was renamed as Jtelite.

3)Jet Konnect: On 8 May 2009 Jet Airways launched its low-cost brand, Jet Konnect. The

decision to launch a new brand instead of expanding the JetLite network was taken after

considering the regulatory delays involved in transferring aircraft from Jet Airways to JetLite, as

the two have different operator codes. The brand was launched on sectors that had 50% or less

load factor with the aim of increasing it to 70% and above. Jet officials said that the brand

would cease to exist once the demand for the regular Jet Airways increases.

Digital marketing

Jet Airways, the nation’s largest domestic carrier, has rolled out anaffiliate marketing

program in the market, as part of the company’s new digitalmarketing strategy to increase its

revenue.

During the announcement, the company said that the program will be managed by Shoogloo

Affiliate Marketing.

Under the program, the Jet AirwaysAffiliate Program provides Affiliate Partners with websites

the opportunity to partner one of India’s leading brands, and generate revenues per conversion

by promoting the airline’s web sales.

In addition, Affiliate partners may integrate Jet Airways’ booking engine on their site and allow

visitors to book Jet Airways tickets online.

It may be noted that these online sales are tracked via a unique id provided to each Affiliate

Partner.

Apart from getting direct access to the airline’s state-of-the-art customized booking engine,

Affiliate partners also get promotional content and banners on a regular basis, thus helping

them promote the airline effectively.

A company official said, this ‘quick and easy to join’ Affiliate Program helps partners earn

incremental income on every successful transaction referred to the airline’s website, by their

site. However, it also gives the company a great opportunity to further increase its online

presence and generate incremental sales through this channel.
