About the Conference

The Conclave would cover

Who should participate?

The growth of the world sugar industry has been spectacular during the last few years, with numerous transformational opportunities for the industry to evolve. The challenges arising out of globalization and liberalization are urging the world sugar industry to produce more and better, with ample scope for competition. This is true especially with respect to the sugar economies of the developing countries, which contribute upto 75% of the sugar production and are significant players in world sugar trade. With the demand for sugar increasing with time, there is an excellent opportunity for the sugarcane growers to produce more. Thus, innovative methods and cultural practices are the need of the hour. Besides, the emerging concept of “Sugar-Power-Ethanol Complexes” is a way of de-risking from sugar downturn and to exploit the untapped potential of ethanol and co-generation. The industry needs to cash in on the huge potential in terms of sugar and energy, taking into consideration, the global demand, challenges intrinsic to the farming systems and other concerns like climate change. Not only sugarcane, other sugar crops like sugarbeet, sweet sorghum, palm etc., are also poised to emerge as major sugar -energy crops of the future. Thus, the industry needs to work out ways and means to fit in these crops also in the sugar production system, not only as source of sugar, but also as bio-fuel and bio-energy source, as the case may be. The diversion to other sugar crops and also to the various other uses like bio-fuel and bio-ethanol production is bound to have an impact on the socio-economic canvass of the developing countries. Thus, the future of the world sugar industry encompassing the various sugar crops needs to be viewed in the backdrop of productivity, profitability and sustainability of the industry.

The International Conclave on Sugar Crops-2014 aims to discuss in detail, the challenges faced by the sugar industry and the future prospects, taking into account the role of different sugar crops in the industry as a whole. The Conclave is intended to provide an excellent networking opportunity for researchers, technologists, extension officers, industrialists, policy makers etc., for meaningful deliberations through sharing of views and experiences, thereby benefitting the growers as well as sugar and integrated industries.
