I’m sure she was braced for yet another “ticked off” person griping about one of their company trucks being driven in a reckless fashion. Here was the gist of the conversation: Lady: “Hello, may I help you?” Me: “Yes, I am calling to report on one of your drivers.” Lady: “What is the identification number right below the 800 number you called? Yes, that is the number; so what is the driver doing?” Me: “Well, ma’am the driver is doing great! I have been following him for several miles, and he is driving at a safe rate of speed; he is going around the curves properly, and it seems he has everything under control. I just wanted to call and brag on him; so would you give him the message that I called?” Lady: “This is not a joke is it? I never get calls like this about our drivers. The calls I get people are normally mean and mad about something.” Me: “No, this is not a joke. I just wanted to let your company know how great of a driver you have on the road today.” I was surprised a few days later when I got a call from one of the executives from the company where the truck driver was employed. He called to thank me for taking the time to brag on one of his drivers. He commented as well that it is rare for one of their drivers to have anything positive said about their driving skills. This got me to thinking about the church. When is the last time you “blos- somed” someone where you worship? Making statements like: “Henry, you did a great job teaching that Sunday School class.” “Pastor Bill, that sermon was outstanding. I can really tell you spent a lot of time praying and studying for that message.” “Jim, I just want to let you know how much I appreciate every week you cleaning the church for us. WESLEYANSEPTEMBER 2008

The other day I was headed to yet another district assignment. I was driving

down the road when I saw I was following a large truck hauling a big piece of

equipment. We happened to be traveling through a construction zone.

As I got closer to the truck I saw the sign that is often on huge vehicles that

ask you to determine how they are driving. So, for the fun of it (I know I should

not do much multi-tasking as I am driving!) I called the 800 number to give my

assessment of how this guy in front of me was maneuvering his vehicle through

the maze of orange cones.

Some lady answered the phone. I’m sure she was braced for yet another

“ticked off” person griping about one of their company trucks being driven in a

reckless fashion. Here was the gist of the conversation:

Lady: “Hello, may I help you?”

Me: “Yes, I am calling to report on one of your drivers.”

Lady: “What is the identification number right below the 800 number you

called? Yes, that is the number; so what is the driver doing?”

Me: “Well, ma’am the driver is doing great! I have been following him for

several miles, and he is driving at a safe rate of speed; he is going around the

curves properly, and it seems he has everything under control. I just wanted to

call and brag on him; so would you give him the message that I called?”

Lady: “This is not a joke is it? I never get calls like this about our drivers. The

calls I get people are normally mean and mad about something.”

Me: “No, this is not a joke. I just wanted to let your company know how great

of a driver you have on the road today.”

I was surprised a few days later when I got a call from one of the executives

from the company where the truck driver was employed. He called to thank me

for taking the time to brag on one of his drivers. He commented as well that it is

rare for one of their drivers to have anything positive said about their driving

skills.

This got me to thinking about the church. When is the last time you “blos-

somed” someone where you worship? Making statements like:

“Henry, you did a great job teaching that Sunday School class.”

“Pastor Bill, that sermon was outstanding. I can really tell you spent a lot of

time praying and studying for that message.”

“Jim, I just want to let you know how much I appreciate every week you

cleaning the church for us. It always looks so nice.”

PASTOR APPRECIATIONOctober is Pastor Appreciation

Month. The Wesleyan Church has desig-nated October 12th as Pastor Apprecia-tion Day. Don’t forget your pastor and hisfamily as they work very hard at what Godhas called them to do.

Pastor’s Wives RetreatThe Pastor’s Wives Retreat will be Fri-

day & Saturday, October 3rd & 4th atthe Gasthof Amish Village in Mont-gomery, Indiana. More details will becoming.

Pastor’s Christmas DinnerThe Pastor’s Annual Christmas

Dinner will be held on Friday, Decem-ber 5, 2008 at the Orleans WesleyanFamily Life Center.

Pastors, make sure you mark your cal-endars. We look forward to a nice night to-gether with you and your family.

“Mary, you are a gift to this church. We thank God for your musical talents thatyou use every week for HIM.”

You get the idea. I once heard Dr. Earle Wilson say that when he was President ofUnited Wesleyan College he instructed his Vice-Presidents to affirm someoneevery day. This is great advice for schools as well as churches.

There is a famous person that wrote in a famous book the same idea. Listen toApostle Paul as he says, “We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as itis fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you allabounds toward each other, so that we ourselves boast of you among the churchesof God…” II Thes 1: 3&4a, NKJV (emphasis mine).

I wondered how that truck driver felt when he was told about how good he wasdriving. It no doubt made his day, just like it will of the person you blossom.

Spiritual Formation District TourPlease mark Saturday, November 8, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. EST

on your calendar. The Paoli Wesleyan Church is going to host a district widetraining day. Dr. Jim Dunn and his staff from the Spiritual Formation Departmentwill be the presenters. There will be sessions for those ministering to adults, teens, and children. All pastors, staff, and lay people are invited.

This is a crucial training day for our district. The International Center is helpingto fund this event so you are strongly encouraged to be there if at all possible. Mygoal is to serve you by offering all the facilitation in ministry we can on the districtlevel without having something planned so often it interferes with your localagenda.

Praise the Lord!!Indiana South Wesleyan District has received a $1,000.00 grant from REMC to

be used for new bedding here on the campgrounds. The REMC’s OperationRound Up is an extension of the concept of neighbor helping neighbor that led tothe creation of their electric cooperate. In a recent letter they stated, “We believe sup-porting the Indiana South Wesleyan District of The Wesleyan Church is a worthwhile causethat benefits many people and we are proud to be able to contribute.”

We thank the Lord for this blessing. Also, special thanks to Mrs. Barbara Hayes who helped with the paperwork to

get this grant.

Building DedicationIt was a privilege a few weeks ago to dedicate this new family life center building at

our Terre Haute Hulman Street Church. Congratulations go to Pastor Dan Wil-lis, Assistant Pastor Mike Hester, the Local Board of Administration, the churchmembers, those that attend, and all who volunteered to see this beautiful building

completed. It hasnew Sunday Schoolrooms, a beautifulkitchen, and a lovelygymnasium.

Dr. & Mrs. Wayne Wright along with his sister, Mrs. FaithLinton, attended this special celebration as well. Dr. Wright statedthat his parents bought the land in 1913 where the Hulman Streetchurch now stands. The man that built the church built is so itcould be connected back to the house because he didn’t think thechurch would make it.

Dr. Wright’s father was the first treasurer of our district in 1952and served until he was 82. Dr. Wright got saved at the HulmanStreet church and felt called to missions at our Seelyville church.
