Indiana UniversitySchool of MedicineOverviewThe School of Medicine is responsible for providingmedical education within the state of Indiana. As partof a major university, it accepts and fulfills five crucialresponsibilities: (1) it provides its students with theopportunity to acquire a sound basic education inmedicine and fosters the development of lifelonghabits of scholarship and service; (2) it advancesknowledge through research in biomedical studiesand studies related to the cultural and behavioralaspects of medicine and the delivery of health care;(3) it provides graduate education in order toproduce practitioners, teachers, and investigatorsthrough clinical residency programs and advanceddegree programs in the basic medical sciences; (4) itoffers continuing education programs aimed atmaintaining and improving the competence of thoseprofessionals engaged in patient care; and (5) itprovides multiple services to the people of Indiana inall areas of the medical sciences and health care.

HistoryThe Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) wasfounded in 1903, and its first students were enrolledon the Bloomington campus. It was the fourth medicalschool in the United States, after Johns Hopkins,Harvard, and Western Reserve, to require two or moreyears of collegiate work for admission. The schoolawarded the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree to itsfirst class of 25 in 1907. Following the union of allmedical schools in the state within Indiana Universityin 1908, the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,in 1909, mandated that Indiana University assume theresponsibility for medical education in the state.Initially, students had the opportunity of taking the firsttwo years of their medical school work at eitherBloomington or Indianapolis. In 1912 all studentsentered through the Bloomington program and movedto Indianapolis for their second-, third-, and fourth-year courses. This system remained in effect until1958, when the work of the Bloomington division wastransferred to Indianapolis. Excellent facilities for theteaching of the basic medical sciences and a strongnucleus of basic science faculty members remained inBloomington. Consequently, in 1959 an experimentalprogram of medical education was started inBloomington in cooperation with the College of Artsand Sciences and the Graduate School. This program,the Medical Sciences Program, included studies thatcould lead to the combined M.D./M.S. and M.D./Ph.D.degrees.

In 1965 a School of Medicine faculty committeerecommended the adoption of a comprehensive planfor medical education throughout the state ofIndiana. The plan involved the use of regionalfacilities in addition to those of the Medical Center inIndianapolis. The plan would coordinate and utilizeelective programs in community hospitals,preceptorships with practicing physicians, internshipand residency programs, and continuing medicaleducation programs throughout the state.

The plan also resulted in the formation, withinexisting educational institutions, of ‘‘centers formedical education’’ for teaching basic medicalscience courses to first-year medical students. In1971 the General Assembly of the State of Indianaunanimously authorized legislation establishing theIndiana Statewide Medical Education System. Thislegislation mandated that the Indiana UniversitySchool of Medicine be responsible for selection,admission, and assignment of students, for curriculardevelopment, and for evaluation and accreditation ofthe system. Further development of the IndianaStatewide Medical Education System was approved inthe 1979 Indiana General Assembly. Approval forplanning and funding for a second year of medicalstudy at each of the centers for medical educationwas passed, and second-year students were firstappointed to all centers except Fort Wayne in the fall1980 semester. Funding for second-year students atthe Fort Wayne campus began in fall 1990. TheSchool of Medicine currently has eight centers formedical education, located in Bloomington,Evansville, Fort Wayne, Gary, Muncie, South Bend,Terre Haute, and West Lafayette.

FacilitiesThe Indiana University Medical Center (IUMC)campus covers some 85 acres within one mile of thecenter of Indianapolis. Half of the first- and second-year classes are on the IUMC campus; the other halfare at the centers for medical education. The Schoolof Medicine’s enrollment in 2002–2003 consisted ofnearly 1,100 M.D. students, 186 Ph.D. students, 120M.S. students, 90 M.P.H. students, and 45 M.D./Ph.D.students. In addition to opportunities at the centersfor medical education, M.D. students may participatein clinical and elective rotations in physician officesand hospitals throughout the state and nation.Students may study or serve abroad during theirmedical school careers.

The IUMC campus includes Fesler Hall, Van NuysMedical Sciences Building, Indiana Cancer Pavilion,IU Cancer Research Institute, the Rotary Building, andEmerson Hall. The William H. Coleman Hospital,Robert W. Long Hospital, and the Willis D. GatchClinical Building have been renovated to provideresearch and administrative offices at IUSM. Theconstruction of a new research building began in the2000–2001 academic year, and yet another wasplanned.

Hospitals that are staffed by faculty and provideresidency training programs include WishardMemorial Hospital (a city–county hospital recentlylisted among the top 100 U.S. public hospitals),Roudebush VA Medical Center, Riley Hospital forChildren, Indiana University Hospital and OutpatientCenter, and LaRue Carter Psychiatric Hospital (stateowned—about five minutes from campus). Riley andIU Hospital separated from the School of Medicine in1997 to join Methodist Hospital of Indiana in formingClarian Health Partners. Clarian Health is committedto supporting the school’s mission of advancingeducation, research, and patient care. Locatedapproximately two miles from IUMC, MethodistHospital provides additional significant educationalopportunities to IU students and residents.

Clarian Health’s hospitals—Riley Hospital forChildren, IU Hospital, and Methodist Hospital ofIndiana—currently record approximately one millionin- and out-patient visits per year. The affiliatedhospitals—Wishard, Roudebush, and LaRue Carter—together handle another 1 million patient visits eachyear. This enormous patient base provides a broadrange of superb clinical educational opportunities.The hospitals host 71 residency and fellowshipprograms with 992 residents and fellows, and provideclinical experiences in both inpatient and outpatientfacilities to second- through fourth-year students.IUSM’s nearly 800 teaching faculty members staff allthe hospitals. In addition, the hospitals hosteducational programs for nursing, dentistry, andallied health sciences students as well as PurdueUniversity pharmacy doctoral students.

An additional undergraduate course in microbiologyis taught by the School of Medicine:

MICR J210 Microbiology and Immunology(4 cr.) P: N261, C101-C102, and N217, orequivalent. For prenursing, health professions, anddental hygiene students; others by consent ofinstructor. Consideration of immunology and host-defense mechanisms, and pathogenic bacteria,viruses, fungi, and parasites in human disease.Laboratory exercises include microbial biology,microscopy, asepsis, pure culture, identification,antimicrobial agents, viral hemagglutination,representative immunological reactions. There are3 hours of lecture and 2 hours of laboratoryexercises each week in a 15-week course.

Health ProfessionsProgramsOverview and DirectoryThe Indiana University School of Medicine HealthProfessions Programs offer degrees and course work inemergency medical services, clinical laboratorysciences, cytotechnology, histotechnology, medicalimaging technology, nuclear medicine technology,radiation therapy, radiography, and respiratory therapy.These programs are housed within appropriate clinicaldepartments in the School of Medicine but arecollectively called the Health Professions Programs(HPP). Other degrees in the health professions areoffered on the IUPUI campus through the School ofDentistry, School of Nursing, and the School of Healthand Rehabilitation Sciences. Related degree programsare also found on the Indiana University regionalcampuses in Gary (Northwest), South Bend, Fort Wayne(IPFW), Kokomo, and New Albany (Southeast).

PurposeThe Indiana University School of Medicine HealthProfessions Programs (HPP) are charged withproviding undergraduate health professionseducation on the Indiana University-Purdue Universitycampus in Indianapolis (IUPUI). These programsprepare health professionals to provide diagnosticand therapeutic patient care. As part of a majoruniversity, the programs accept and fulfill four majorresponsibilities by providing (1) opportunities toacquire a sound basic education in theundergraduate health programs offered through theSchool of Medicine and to foster the development oflifelong habits of scholarship and service; (2)advancement of knowledge through research; (3)continuing education programs aimed at maintainingand improving the competence of those healthprofessionals engaged in patient care or supportivehealth services; and (4) multiple services to thepeople of the state of Indiana in these healthprofessions.

PhilosophyThe Indiana University School of Medicine HealthProfessions Programs are committed to qualitypreparation of health personnel who have a concernfor the well-being of the people they serve. Theprograms integrate teaching, research, and servicethrough the efforts of their faculty and students. Thisintegration results in quality programs that have asignificant positive impact on health care.

Each program offered provides the health professionsstudent with an opportunity to develop expertise,scientific knowledge, and professional attitudes thatwill enable the student to contribute to the health ofsociety and obtain career satisfaction. The programsadhere to specific professional guidelines orstandards and are designed in collaboration with theappropriate accrediting bodies. All curricula arebased upon a foundation in the liberal arts andsciences, which is essential for an informed andproductive life.

The faculty believes that the education of healthprofessions personnel follows a coordinated andlogical interdisciplinary process based on a corebody of knowledge germane to health professionspractice. By sharing experiences related to a varietyof activities, the student is introduced to others whohave both common and unique educational interests.Appreciation of the contribution of each healthdiscipline and interaction with peers and scholars indifferent health professions encourage thecoordination of health planning, health services,disease prevention, and health promotion.

Education is perceived by the faculty as an evolvingand continuing process toward an increased ability tothink, reason, and judge that leads to a satisfying andself-disciplined life. Effective education allows forindividual difference and is provided in a participativeatmosphere. It is believed that freedom of choice andmeaningful assimilation of facts nurture thedevelopment of the students, enhance theirunderstanding of patients’ problems, and promote adedication to lifelong self-evaluation and self-education.

Faculty of the School of Medicine Health ProfessionsPrograms are fully qualified in their fields of expertiseand hold appropriate degrees and certification orlicensure. In implementing the objectives of the HPP,they strive to keep their professional and teachingcompetencies current. The faculty are committed topreparing uniquely qualified personnel who mustmeet the challenges of the complex and ever-changing health care needs of society.

The graduates of HPP should be prepared to applythe knowledge they have attained in their selecteddiscipline. Graduates have a responsibility to maintaincompetency through formal and informal continuingeducation and to contribute to new knowledge intheir discipline. Graduates have legal, moral, andethical responsibilities to their employers, patients,and the public and are expected to participate incommunity and professional activities.

This statement of philosophy forms the core of valuesfrom which the HPP vision, mission, objectives,policies, and procedures are derived.

VisionThe vision of the School of Medicine HealthProfessions Programs is to be a nationally recognizedleader in health professions education, research, andservice, while providing an array of high-qualityhealth care professionals in Indiana.

MissionThe School of Medicine Health Professions Programs(HPP) have a long tradition of academic excellence.The major purpose of the HPP is to provide qualitydegree programs in the health professions to meetthe needs of the people of the state of Indiana. Infulfilling its fundamental purpose, the HPP seek todevelop and maintain a scholarly and competentfaculty capable of achieving the following goals:• To build upon sound principles of general

education by preparing students to communicateeffectively, exhibit quantitative skills, thinkcritically, integrate and apply knowledge, exhibitintellectual depth and breadth, be intellectuallyadaptive, appreciate societal and culturaldiversity, and apply ethical standards and valuesto professional practice.

• To provide undergraduate degree programs thatoffer education related to the provision andmanagement of health services by the varioushealth professions.

• To contribute to the advancement of knowledgethrough research.

• To provide continuing education for healthprofessions practitioners wishing to further theircareer development.

• To foster the development of lifelong habits forscholarship and service among faculty andstudents.

History of Current DegreeProgramsAll School of Medicine Health Professions Programswere formerly part of the School of Allied HealthSciences. On July 1, 2002, nine programs weremoved to the School of Medicine as part of arestructuring of Allied Health to move it toward agraduate school model. Through the HealthProfessions Programs, the School of Medicine willcontinue to offer undergraduate degrees andcertificates.

Allied Health Sciences was first established as adivision in 1959 by action of the Trustees of IndianaUniversity. In 1960, the trustees conferred upon thefaculty of the School of Medicine the responsibilityand authority to grant the Bachelor of Science degreeto those students successfully completing theprescribed curriculum in four allied health programsthat had been offered long before the establishmentof the division. Since that time, additional degreeprograms were approved and initiated.

AccreditationThe School of Medicine Health Professions Programsshare with the other schools of the university theaccreditation accorded Indiana University as amember of the North Central Association of Collegesand Schools.

In addition, the professional programs areindividually accredited by appropriate governingagencies within the discipline. See program-specificsections.

Preadmission StatusEnrollment at Indiana University does not guaranteeadmission to any of the health professions programs.To be eligible for admission to one of the healthprofessions programs, students must adhere to theacademic regulations of the academic unit in whichthey are enrolled and meet HPP and individualprogram preadmission requirements as stipulated inthe general education and program sections of thisbulletin. Admission to many programs is competitive;therefore, completion of the prerequisites does notguarantee admission to the program. In someinstances a student may be admitted to the School ofMedicine Health Professions Programs as apreprofessional student; however, this status is foracademic advising purposes only and in no wayinfluences admittance into a professional program.

Change of EducationalObjective for PreprofessionalStudentsChanging one’s educational objective to a healthprofessions program does not guarantee admission tothe program. Students considering a change in theireducational objective should consult with a counseloron their respective campuses before initiating thechange. Pre–health professions students in UniversityCollege, the School of Medicine, or other IndianaUniversity schools or divisions must follow thatacademic unit’s procedures for changing theeducational objective. All students must meet HPPand individual program admission requirements inorder to be admitted to a professional program.

Admission PoliciesThe admission policies of individual programs withinthe School of Medicine Health Professions Programscomply with the following standards:

Prerequisite Course Work Applicants mustcomplete prerequisite courses at an accredited highschool (or by GED equivalent), college, or university.Individual programs determine the specific coursesand the minimum grade that must be achieved in anycourse (see specific program information); therefore,program-specific requirements may differ. Thecompletion of a prerequisite course with a Pass/Failgrade must be approved by each program. Studentsare eligible to apply for admission to an associate orbaccalaureate program when their academic progressshows reasonable probability that entry-levelrequirements can be completed before the beginningdate of the next class entering the professionalprogram. Applicants should read the “AdmissionPolicies” and “Program Descriptions” in the Schoolof Medicine sections of this bulletin for specific entry-level requirements.

Grade Requirements Without exception,applicants to a degree program must have acumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on a4.0 scale for all course work completed at IndianaUniversity and/or any other college or university.Some programs have established a minimum gradepoint average higher than 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Someprograms also use a component of the overall gradepoint average (for example, math/science grade pointaverage). See specific program information. Onlycompleted course work and the resultant grade pointaverage are evaluated. In evaluating the high schoolrecord of applicants to an associate degree program,only academic course work will be used incalculating the admission grade point average.Students applying for a degree program may not beadmitted to, hold a position in, or begin a program ifthey would be on probation as a student in an HPPprogram. Students are placed on probation within theSchool of Medicine Health Professions Programswhen the cumulative and/or most recently completedsemester grade point average falls below 2.0 on a 4.0scale. The applicant must also maintain the minimumgrade point average as established by the program.The applicant’s grade point average will be the majorconsideration (51 percent or greater) for admission.(See specific program information.)

Repeated Courses Applicants whose cumulativegrade point average is at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale andwho have repeated courses may petition to have theiradmission grade point average recalculated. Therecalculation will use the most recent grade of therepeated course. This repeat option includes the useof the Indiana University FX option and is appliedwith the following restrictions: it can be used for atotal of no more than 15 credits; the grade will bedeleted not more than twice for a given course; eachattempt will count toward the 15 credit hour limit;and a W cannot be used to replace a grade and willnot count toward the 15 credit hours. If more than15 credit hours are repeated, the applicant willdetermine which of the repeated courses are to bedeleted. The petition must be attached to theapplication. The effective date is the beginning of the

1996 fall semester. Any course being used to replacean earlier taking of the course must be taken in thefall of 1996 or later.

Academic Bankruptcy Applicants whose gradepoint average is at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale maypetition the program for up to one year (fall, spring,and summer) of academic bankruptcy based oncompelling nonacademic reasons. The bankruptedsemesters must be consecutive. Academic bankruptcyis for admission purposes only and in no way affectsthe university’s official grade point average. Coursework completed in a semester that has beenbankrupted for admission purposes cannot be usedfor the fulfillment of program prerequisites orcounted as credit hours toward the degree. Thepetition must be attached to the application.

Fresh Start The Health Professions Programs, forthe purposes of selecting candidates for its variousundergraduate programs, will allow an applicant toappeal to the program’s admissions committee for afresh start that allows an “academic forgiveness” forthe early portion of the student’s academic pursuits.Students must request a fresh start at the time ofprogram application.

Fresh start will eliminate, during the forgivenessperiod, all courses and grades earned by theapplicant for the purpose of calculating the HPPadmission grade point average. Only grades fromcourses completed after the fresh start period will beconsidered in admission calculations. No coursetaken during this fresh start period may be used forthe fulfillment of any prerequisite or graduationrequirement.

The forgiveness period begins with the applicant’sfirst academic enrollment period (at anycollege/university) and ends on a date designated bythe applicant but no less than four calendar years forbaccalaureate degree programs (two calendar yearsfor associate degree programs) before the program’sstarting date. To invoke this policy, the student mustmeet the following conditions:1. have a 2.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale),

including all course work taken during therequested forgiveness period;

2. complete a minimum of 24 credit hours forbachelor’s degree programs (12 credit hours forassociate degree programs) of graded coursework after the forgiveness period; and

3. meet all other program-specific admissionrequirements.

The granting of a fresh start by a program does notalter the student’s official academic record. Studentsmust meet all minimum degree requirements andmay invoke this policy only one time. The petition forfresh start must be attached to the application.

Credit by Examination Applicants to any of theIndiana University School of Medicine HealthProfessions programs who have received “credit byexamination” in a course that meets a programprerequisite will be viewed as meeting this specifiedrequirement. Application of this policy formath/science prerequisites will be determined at theprogram level. Any “credit by examination” hoursreceived by the student must be transferred onto the

student’s university transcript before it can beconsidered as meeting a program’s admissionsprerequisite.

At IUPUI, “credit by examination” can be earned fromthe following sources: Advance Placement (AP), theCollege Level Examination Program (CLEP), theDefense Activity for Non-Traditional EducationSupport (DANTES), and Indiana Universitydepartmental examinations.

Testing Applicants may be required to completetesting as designated by the program. Testing resultsmay be used as a component of the admissionsdecision unless their use would violate state orfederal law.

Interview Applicants may be required to completea personal interview. The interview may be acomponent of the admission decision.

Technical Standards for Admission andRetention Since a degree in one of the healthprofessions disciplines attests to the mastery ofknowledge and skills, graduates must possess theessential knowledge and skills to function in a broadvariety of clinical situations and render a widespectrum of patient care in a safe and effectivemanner.

The School of Medicine Health Professions Programsfaculty has therefore specified nonacademic criteria,Technical Standards for Admission and Retention,which all applicants/students are expected to meet inorder to participate in a health professions program.These criteria include the following five categories:(1) observation; (2) communication; (3) motorfunction; (4) intellectual-conceptual, integrative, andquantitative abilities; and (5) behavioral and socialattributes. All accepted students will be required tosign a statement certifying that they can meet thetechnical standards that apply to the program towhich they have been admitted.

4. Applicants who have not taken the course beforethe change will have to meet the newrequirements.

Admission Procedures1. In addition to the general admission

requirements, individuals must read the program-specific sections in the bulletin for additionaladmission requirements and deadlines.

2. Individuals seeking admission to a professionalprogram must submit a complete School ofMedicine Health Professions Programs (HPP)application prior to the program’s applicationdeadline. When applying to more than oneprogram, separate applications must becompleted. Admission to the professionalprogram is competitive; application for admissionto the school does not constitute automaticadmission to a program.

3. Applicants who are not Indiana Universitystudents must also file an Indiana Universityapplication and pay the application fee prior tothe program application deadline. Applicationsfor admission to Indiana University–PurdueUniversity Indianapolis can be obtained from theIUPUI Office of Admissions at (317) 274-4591 [email protected]. This application process canalso be completed online at enroll.iupui.edu.

4. All complete applications are reviewed by theprogram’s admission committee. The selection ofa class is based on school and programadmission criteria. All applicants receive writtennotification of their admission status.

5. Applicants may appeal any admission decisionexcept the requirement of a grade point averageof a cumulative 2.00 on a 4.00 scale. Copies ofthe policies and procedures governing theappeals process are available on request from theHPP office.

6. Individuals interested in being admitted to one ofthe school’s programs should contact theprogram of interest annually for an update ofadmission criteria. For more information visit the

7. The HPP application is revised each summer.Applicants must obtain an application for the yearin which they wish to apply.

8. Applicants should check the current schoolapplication for the deadlines for submission.

9. Students who have been convicted of a felony maybe unable to obtain appropriate credentials topractice in some disciplines. Contact the programdirector for further information.

10. A student whose name appears on the state ofIndiana’s Sex Offenders Registry will not beallowed to pursue admission to any program inthe School of Medicine Health ProfessionsPrograms.

11. Grades earned in remedial courses may beutilized differently by programs to calculate thecompetitive grade point average. See theprogram-specific sections.

Transfer CreditAcceptance of credit from a regionally accreditedcollege or university for transfer to Indiana Universitywill be determined by the campus office of admissions.

While the grades from course work completed atIndiana University and all other colleges anduniversities are used to calculate the admission gradepoint average, only grades of C (2.0) or above will beconsidered for transfer. The university does notaccept the transference of special credit byexamination awarded by another college or university.The transfer of credit earned through a regionallyaccredited junior college or a community college isnormally limited to the equivalent of two years ofacademic work toward a baccalaureate degree andone year of academic work toward an associatedegree.

Correspondence CoursesAll credit to be applied to an HPP degree earnedthrough IU’s Independent Study Program,correspondence study, or other nontraditionalmethods must be validated and approved by thefaculty of the program to which the student isapplying. The School of Medicine Health ProfessionsPrograms retains the right to determine theacceptability of transfer credit to meet degreerequirements.

Undergraduate DegreeRequirementsThe Indiana University School of Medicine HealthProfessions Programs faculty will recommend fordegrees only those students who have been admittedto Indiana University and are students in goodstanding in the HPP and the professional program.Candidates for degrees are eligible for graduationupon completion of all program requirements ineffect when the student first enrolls in professionalcourse work, provided requirements are met withinfive years. (Exception: State rules require students inparamedic science to complete the professionalprogram in two years.)

interrupted for any reason to meet requirements asspecified by the director of the program and the deanof the School of Medicine Health ProfessionsPrograms or the dean’s designee. Changes in thestudent’s original program may be necessary when,for example, a curriculum has been revised, offeringsare no longer available, significant changes incurriculum content have occurred, or repetition ofmaterial is deemed essential to assure continuity ofclinical competency.

Academic counseling and guidance are available forstudents. Students are responsible for seeking suchcounseling and guidance and for planning courses ofstudy to meet degree requirements.

Students must complete the prescribed course ofstudy, meeting program academic, professional,and technical standards requirements, which mayexceed the requirements stated above. Programprofessional standards consist of ethics and properhealth care practices to which students must adhere.Program faculty will distribute these standards whenappropriate.

During the fall semester before the graduation year,the student is responsible for submitting an intent-to-graduate form, which indicates that the student plansto complete all requirements for the appropriatedegree.

Work for a degree must be completed within fiveyears from the time the student first enrolls in theprofessional program. (Exception: State rules requirestudents in paramedic science to complete theprofessional program in two years.) Under unusualcircumstances, the program director mayrecommend granting a waiver of this requirement.

Students are informed of program, academic, andprofessional standards during program orientation.

Class Standing Within Indiana University, classstanding is based on the total number of credit hoursa student has earned. However, within the HPP, classstanding is assigned according to a student’s progressin the professional curriculum.

Semester Load To be considered a full-timestudent by the university for each session, the studentmust register for a minimum of 12 credit hours eachfall and spring semester and 6 credit hours eachsummer I and II. The maximum load is 18 credithours. Students who want to carry more than 18credits must obtain permission of the programdirector and the dean or the dean’s designee. Inaddition, students should have a cumulative 3.0 (B)average or have earned a 3.0 (B) average in their lastfull semester.

Probation Upon the recommendation of the facultyin the student’s program, a student is placed onprobation. Probationary recommendations are madewhen the student does not meet standards ofacademic performance or professional behavior. Astudent will be placed on academic probation for theacademic session following the one in which thestudent fails to attain a minimum 2.0 (C) cumulativeand/or semester grade point average. Individualprograms may have additional academic and/orprofessional standards. A student who fails to meetthese program-specific standards may also be placedon probation. Students are informed of program-specific standards upon entering the program. Astudent will be removed from probation aftersatisfactorily completing the program’s specifiedrequirements. Students are notified in writing ofprobationary actions by the School of Medicine deanor the dean’s designee.

Dismissal Upon the recommendation of the facultyin the student’s program, a student may be dismissedfrom the HPP. Dismissal is based on the failure tomeet academic or professional standards. Thestudent will be informed of the dismissal in writing bythe School of Medicine dean or the dean’s designee.A student who has been dismissed from the HPP maynot apply for readmission to the program in whichthe student was enrolled at the time of dismissal.Under special circumstances, a waiver may berequested by the program and forwarded to the HPP’sAdvisory Committee for action.

Academic Standards A student may be dismissedfrom the School of Medicine Health ProfessionsPrograms when, in the judgment of the faculty, thestudent has ceased to make satisfactory progresstoward a degree. When an undergraduate studentfails to attain a 2.0 (C) grade point average for twoconsecutive academic sessions, has a cumulativegrade point average below 2.0 (C) for twoconsecutive semesters, or fails to earn higher than a1.0 (D) grade point average in any one semester, thestudent is automatically considered to be makingunsatisfactory progress toward a degree and isthereby eligible for dismissal.

In addition, a student who fails to meet program-specific academic requirements is considered not tobe making satisfactory academic progress toward a

degree and may be dismissed. At the time of programorientation, each student receives a copy of theprogram-specific academic requirements.

Professional Standards A student failing to meetthe standards of professional and personal conductmay be recommended for dismissal.

Withdrawal and Readmission A student may bereadmitted to the HPP after withdrawal as follows:

Temporary Withdrawal Students in good standingwho voluntarily and temporarily withdraw from aprogram assume temporary inactive status with theSchool of Medicine Health Professions Programs. Atthe time of departure, it is the student’s responsibilityto arrange in writing a continuation agreement withthe individual program director. The student isallowed to re-enroll as specified in the continuationagreement. The student must meet any specificacademic/clinical requirements associated with re-enrollment under the continuation agreement.Students failing to re-enroll as specified in thecontinuation agreement are subject to dismissal fromthe HPP and program.

Other Withdrawal A student who withdraws withoutarranging in writing for a continuation agreementwith the program director, or fails to enroll in anysemester, will not be allowed further enrollments inthe HPP and will be considered as not makingsatisfactory progress toward a degree. Such studentswho want to re-enroll must file an application foradmission and will be considered as new applicants.New prerequisites and standards must be met. Thesestudents may be considered for advanced standing inthe program provided the completed work meets thecurrent standards of the program.

HonorsThe School of Medicine Health Professions Programsoffer the following honors to recognize superiorstudent performances.

Degrees Awarded with Distinction (IU policy)The university recognizes a student’s superiorperformance in course work by awarding theassociate or bachelor’s degree with one of threelevels of distinction: distinction, high distinction, orhighest distinction. A student must meet the followingcriteria to receive a degree awarded with distinction.1. Baccalaureate and associate degree candidates

must rank within the highest 10 percent of theirgraduating class. The determination of eligibilityfor graduation with academic distinction will bemade by the School of Medicine HealthProfessions Programs so that candidates will beranked with classmates who received the sametype of degrees (e.g., B.S. in Cytotechnology, B.S.in Nuclear Medicine Technology).

2. If the 10 percent determination of any classresults in a fractional value, the number will berounded upward (e.g., a graduating class of 11would have two individuals eligible fordistinction).

3. Calculation of the grade point average forgraduation with distinction will be based upon thetotal number of credit hours completed atIndiana University. A candidate for abaccalaureate degree must have completed a

minimum of 60 credit hours at Indiana University;associate degree candidates must have completedat least half of the credit hours required for theirdegree at Indiana University.

4. No more than 10 percent of the Indiana Universitycredit hours may be eliminated from the gradepoint average determination by utilization of themechanisms of Pass/Fail or special credit.

5. A minimum cumulative grade point average of3.50 must have been achieved.

6. Three levels of distinction will be recognized anddetermined as follows: 3.50 through 3.74—Distinction; 3.75 through 3.89—High Distinction;3.90 through 4.00—Highest Distinction.

7. The determination of candidates who will wearhonor cords at the May graduation ceremoniesshould include all academic credit earned atIndiana University including the spring semesterbefore commencement.

8. Unique cases and appeals should be forwarded tothe dean of the School of Medicine HealthProfessions Programs or the dean’s designee forconsideration.

Dean’s List Each semester, students who excelacademically have the privilege of being listed on theSchool of Medicine Health Professions ProgramsDean’s List. To be eligible, students must carry 9 ormore credit hours and must earn a semester gradepoint average of 3.50.

Program Awards Individual professionalprograms in the School of Medicine HealthProfessions Programs offer awards recognizingacademic excellence, leadership, career potential,and service. Students should refer to specificprograms for descriptions of these awards.

IUPUI Honors DegreeQualified students at IUPUI may work toward theGeneral Honors Degree, which can be earned at thebaccalaureate or associate degree level.

At the baccalaureate level, the student must fulfillboth general and departmental requirements.Minimum requirements for an honors degree are 24hours of honors credit, at least 6 of which are outsidethe major. A student passing in an honors course willreceive credit toward graduation; however, onlygrades of A or B count for honors credit. There is agrade point average requirement of 3.30 overall and3.50 for honors courses.

At the associate level, students must complete allregular associate degree requirements. In addition,they must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours inhonors work of which no more than 3 may be inskills courses. In their required courses, they mustinclude 3 credit hours (usually honors courses)outside the department or school in which they aremajoring. Students must earn a grade point averageof 3.30 overall and 3.50 for honors work.

Students in the School of Medicine Health ProfessionsPrograms who would like to pursue courses underthe IUPUI Honors Program should consult withprogram faculty regarding the availability of suchcourses within the particular program of interest.

Student Rights andResponsibilitiesApplication to and enrollment in the universityconstitute the student’s commitment to honor andabide by the practices and policies stated in theuniversity’s official announcements, bulletins,handbooks, and other published materials and tobehave in a manner that is mature and compatiblewith the university’s function as an institution ofhigher learning. Students are expected to read theIndiana University Code of Student Rights,Responsibilities, and Conduct and, by theirenrollment, agree to its contents and additionalSchool of Medicine Health Professions Programsstatements, which appear below.

Academic Advising A professional advisor isavailable to assist students who are working on theprerequisites for a professional program. Onceadmitted to a professional program, students areadvised by faculty within the program. It is thestudent’s responsibility to seek counseling andguidance. The student is responsible for planning aprogram to meet degree requirements.

Appeals The School of Medicine HealthProfessions Programs abides by the appealsprocedures discussed in the Indiana UniversityCode of Student Rights, Responsibilities, andConduct. Students may obtain a copy of the HPPAppeals Policy and Procedure from any of theprogram’s administrative offices.

Attendance Students are responsible for complyingwith all attendance requirements that may beestablished by the HPP faculty.

Cheating and Plagiarism Faculty and studentshave rights and responsibilities for learning, teaching,and scholarship within the entire universitycommunity. Academic functions are characterized byreasoned discourse, intellectual honesty, mutualrespect, and openness to constructive change.Individuals must remain active in avoiding violation ofacademic ethics.

Cheating Dishonesty of any kind with respect toexaminations, course assignments, alteration ofrecords, or illegal possession of examinationquestions shall be considered cheating.

It is the responsibility of the student not only toabstain from cheating but, in addition, to guardagainst making it possible for others to cheat. Anystudent who helps another student to cheat is asguilty of cheating as the student assisted. Studentsshould also do everything possible to induce respectfor the examination process and for honesty in theperformance of assigned tasks in or out of class.

Plagiarism Honesty requires that any ideas ormaterials taken from another source for eitherwritten or oral use must be fully acknowledged.Offering the work of someone else as one’s own isplagiarism. The language or ideas thus taken fromanother may range from isolated formulas, sentences,or paragraphs to entire articles copied from books,periodicals, speeches, or the writings of otherstudents. The offering of materials assembled orcollected by others in the form of projects orcollections without acknowledgment also is

considered plagiarism. Any student who fails to givecredit for ideas or materials that are taken fromanother source is guilty of plagiarism.

Clinical Affiliations Clinical affiliations (fieldworkexperiences) are required in most School ofMedicine Health Professions Programs. The programfaculty is responsible for the selection, approval, andassignment of clinical experiences. Althoughindividual student needs and desires will berecognized, the final placement decisions are madeby the program faculty. Students are responsible fortransportation, fees, and self-support, and forfollowing the rules and regulations of the center(s) towhich they are assigned. In addition, student conductmust be consistent with the standards of the universityand the profession.

Confidentiality of Records Indiana University, incompliance with the General Education ProvisionsAct, Section 438, titled Family Educational Rights andPrivacy Act, provides that all of a student’s recordsare confidential and available only to that student andto the parents if the student is under 21 anddependent as defined by IRS standards. The studentmay review the record upon request and may ask fordeletions or corrections of the record in a hearingprocess described in detail in the Indiana UniversityCode of Student Rights, Responsibilities, andConduct. References, recommendations, and othersimilar documents may carry a voluntary waiverrelinquishing the student’s right to review this specificmaterial. The student may also release the record toothers by signing a written release available in theoffices that maintain records. Further detailsregarding the provisions of the Privacy Act and a listof offices where student records are kept may befound in the Indiana University Code of StudentRights, Responsibilities, and Conduct.

Degree Applications Each fall, students preparingto graduate during the following calendar year mustfile an intent-to-graduate form in the office of theprogram in which they are enrolled. Program facultythen certify the student’s satisfactory completion ofdegree requirements. If changes in the anticipateddate of degree completion occur, students mustconsult their faculty advisor and file an updatedintent-to-graduate form.

Financial Aid A student may seek financialassistance through the financial aid office on thecampus of interest. In addition, assistance may beavailable through professional associations and otherexternal groups and agencies.

Costs Students are responsible for the followingcosts:

Fees and Tuition Fees and tuition are establishedannually by the Trustees of Indiana University.

Books and Supplies Books and supplies aredetermined by the program.

Uniforms During clinical/fieldwork experiences,students must adhere to the dress code requirementsof the program and training site. Students areresponsible for providing their own uniforms.

Transportation Students are responsible for traveland lodging costs associated with clinical/fieldworkexperiences.

While tuition, fees, and other related expenses changeeach year, the estimated annual cost associated withmatriculating in one of the undergraduateprofessional programs for the 2003-2004 academicyear ranged from $5,750 to $7,800 for studentscontinuing in the IU system and $6,550 to $8,800 fornew matriculants. This estimate does not includeliving allowances. Contact the program of interest fora current cost sheet.

Liability Insurance All students participating inrequired clinical experiences are covered by theuniversity’s medical malpractice insurance. Whenrequested, students may be required to purchase andshow proof of general liability insurance before beingcertified to begin the clinical experience.

Health Before the beginning of the professionalprogram, students are required to demonstrate proofof immunization for tetanus and diphtheria, rubella,rubeola (measles), mumps, varicella (chicken pox),and hepatitis. All students must have a PPD tuberculinskin test within the last three months. Students maybe required to complete a physical examination (seeprogram specific requirements). All students mustshow proof of health insurance before beginning theprofessional program.

International Students Foreign nationalsenrolled in the HPP are subject to the same rightsand responsibilities as all other students.International students should consult the IUPUI Officefor International Affairs. A processing fee may becharged to entering students.

Orientation School of Medicine Health ProfessionsPrograms require students to attend orientationprograms before the beginning of the professionalcourses. Students are responsible for attending thesesessions and for the program-specific policies andstandards distributed and discussed at the sessions.

Professional Conduct Students are responsiblefor exhibiting conduct appropriate to theirprofessional training and education. Each programdistributes standards and policies of appropriateprofessional conduct at the time of programorientation.

Registration and Record Changes It is thestudent’s responsibility to enroll in each requiredacademic session and satisfactorily complete allcourses required for the degree. Faculty are availableto provide academic advising.

Students are responsible for filing the necessaryStudent Record Change form with the School ofMedicine Health Professions Programs in the MedicalScience Building, MS 158 as soon as possiblefollowing a change of name or permanent address.

Credentials/LicensureStudents completing any of the professional programsare qualified to sit for the appropriate licensureand/or credentialing examinations. Contact theprogram director for further information.

Mission Statement The mission of the ClinicalLaboratory Science Program at IndianaUniversity–Purdue University Indianapolis is toprovide a quality education in the knowledge, skills,and professional attitudes required to follow goodlaboratory practice in providing quality testing for thediagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of disease.

Description of the Profession Clinicallaboratory science is a diverse, science-basedprofession aimed at accurate performance of clinicallaboratory procedures on biologic samples frompatients. Physicians use the results from theseprocedures in diagnosing, monitoring, and treatingdiseases. Some of the tasks that clinical laboratoryscientists perform are listed below:

• Analysis of simple/complex chemicalcomponents of body fluids

• Evaluation of cellular components of blood• Identification of microorganisms and their

antibiotic susceptibilities• Preparation of blood components for patient

therapy• Evaluation of new techniques, procedures,

and instruments

These laboratory personnel continually evaluate thequality of the results from procedures andinstruments and solve any problems that relate toinconsistencies. Excellent communication skills arerequired to interact with other members of the healthcare team, to teach, and to manage individuals undertheir supervision.

Clinical laboratory scientists typically work inlaboratories located in hospitals, clinics, physiciangroup practices, blood centers, medical researchfacilities, or medically oriented industries.

Graduates of the Program Students whosuccessfully complete the senior/professional year ofthe clinical laboratory science program and have abaccalaureate degree are eligible to take nationalcertification examinations. Nationally recognizedcertification is a requirement for employment inmany settings.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMLength of Program Clinical laboratory science isa four-year baccalaureate degree program that istypically full-time days; however, some part-time daypositions are available. The program is structured ina 3 + 1 arrangement in which three years are spentin regular college courses in order to completeprerequisite courses, and the fourth year is thesenior/professional year. The professional yearincludes both didactic and supervised clinicaleducation experiences.

CytotechnologyAn educational program in cytotechnology is locatedin Corporate Square West, 5610 Crawfordsville Road,Building 24, Suite 2401, Speedway, IN 46224.

Description of the Profession Cytotechnology isa medical laboratory specialty in which microscopicstudies of exfoliated, abraded, and aspirated cellsfrom the human body are performed. Thecytotechnologist studies cell samples from variousbody sites to detect cellular changes indicative ofcancer. In providing a means of early detection,cytology makes possible the early diagnosis of cancer,thus increasing the chances of a cure. Cytology alsoserves as a prognostic tool during the course ofcancer treatment programs. In addition, it aids inestablishing the diagnosis of benign diseaseprocesses, such as endocrine disorders, and indetecting some pathogenic microorganisms.

Graduates of the Program The CytotechnologyProgram is designed to provide its graduates with acomprehensive, fundamental knowledge of clinicalcytology that will enable them to function ascompetent cytotechnologists and will provide a basisfor continuing education and professional growth.Graduates will be eligible for the certificationexamination administered by the Board of Registryleading to certification and registration incytotechnology with the American Society of ClinicalPathologists. Graduates should be prepared formanagement, supervisory, and educationalresponsibilities and should seek ways to contribute tothe growing body of knowledge in clinical cytology.The program is designed to prepare graduates torealize their position in the total health care structureand understand their legal, ethical, and moralresponsibilities to the employers and communitiesthey serve. Cytotechnologists normally practice inhospitals, laboratories, or research laboratories.

Design of the Professional Curriculum Anintegral relationship between the program and thecytology service laboratory provides students withmaximum exposure to a functioning cytologylaboratory. Individual instruction, demonstrations, lectures, andconferences are all utilized as methods of instruction.Student inquiry and research that will foster greaterunderstanding and possible revision of presentedmaterial are encouraged. Emergency MedicalServicesEducational Program An educational program inEmergency Medical Technician-Basic and ParamedicScience is located on the Indiana University-PurdueUniversity Indianapolis campus.

Description of the Profession and CareerRequirements Emergency medical technicians(EMTs)—basic respond to emergency calls toprovide efficient and immediate care to the criticallyill and injured, and transport patients to medicalfacilities. After receiving the call from the dispatcher,The EMT—basic drives the ambulance to the addressor location given, using the most expeditious route,depending on traffic and weather conditions. TheEMT—basic observes traffic ordinances andregulations concerning emergency vehicle operation,and upon arrival at the scene of crash or illness,parks the ambulance in a safe location to avoidadditional injury. Before initiating patient care, theEMT—basic also sizes up the scene to determine thatthe scene is safe, to identify the mechanism of injuryor nature of illness and total number of patients, andto request additional help if necessary. In the absenceof law enforcement, the EMT—basic creates a safetraffic environment, such as the placement of roadflares, removal of debris, and redirection of traffic forthe protection of the injured and those assisting inemergency care. The EMT—basic determines thenature and extent of illness or injury and establishespriority for required emergency care. Based onassessment findings, the EMT—basic rendersemergency medical care to medical and traumapatients. Duties include, but are not limited to,opening and maintaining an airway; ventilatingpatients; cardiopulmonary resuscitation, includinguse of automated external defibrillators; andproviding prehospital emergency medical care ofsimple and multiple system trauma, such ascontrolling hemorrhage, treating shock(hypoperfusion), bandaging wounds, andimmobilization of painful, swollen, or deformedextremities. Other duties include assisting inchildbirth; management of respiratory, cardiac,diabetic, allergic, behavioral, and environmentalemergencies; and dealing with suspected poisonings.The EMT—basic searches for medical identificationemblems as clues in providing emergency care.Additional care, including administering medications,is provided based upon assessing patients andobtaining historical information.

When a patient must be extricated from entrapment,the EMT—basic assesses the extent of injury andgives all possible emergency care and protection tothe entrapped patient and uses the prescribedtechniques and appliances for safe removal, including

contact dispatchers for additional help or specialrescue and/or utility services. The EMT—basicprovides simple rescue service if an ambulance hasnot been accompanied by a specialized unit. TheEMT—basic complies with regulations on handlingvictims of fatalities. Other duties include lifting,securing, and removing stretchers. From theknowledge of the condition of patients and the extentof injuries and the relative locations and staffing ofemergency hospital facilities, the EMT—basicdetermines the most appropriate facility to which apatient will be transported and communicateseffectively with emergency departments andcommunications centers. The EMT—basic alsoidentifies assessment findings that may requirecommunication with medical personnel.

The EMT—basic provides assistance to receivingfacility staff upon request and ensures thatambulances are kept in optimal condition. Membersof the profession must maintain familiarity withspecialized equipment and attend continuingeducation and refresher training programs asrequired by employers, medical direction, andlicensing or certifying agencies. They must also meetqualifications within the functional job analysis.

Completion of the Course Work/Graduates ofthe Program The EMT—basic program is aregular university course of study open to allstudents. A student completing the course work isprepared to work as an EMT to deliver emergencypatient care in the prehospital setting. Graduates ofboth the EMT—basic and the paramedic programprimarily provide emergency care in ambulance, fireservices, or athletic training venues at their level oftraining. Nontraditional areas of employment areavailable in hospitals and industry.

Credential Required to Practice EMT—B,(Emergency Medical Technician—Basic)

Licensure Required to Practice Graduates ofeither the EMT—basic or the paramedic programmust pass a state-administered certificationexamination before credentialing. The certificationexamination may vary from state to state. The EMT—basic exam in Indiana is the written and skill examfrom the Indiana Public Safety Training Institute.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Description of the Profession Paramedics havefulfilled prescribed requirements by a credentialingagency to practice the art and science of out-of-hospital medicine in conjunction with medicaldirection. Through performance of assessments andproviding medical care, their goal is to prevent andreduce mortality and morbidity due to illness andinjury. Paramedics primarily provide care toemergency patients in an out-of-hospital setting.

Paramedics possess the knowledge, skills, andattitudes consistent with the expectations of the publicand the profession. Paramedics recognize that theyare an essential component of the continuum of careand serve as linkages among health resources.

Paramedics strive to maintain high-quality, reasonablypriced health care by delivering patients directly toappropriate facilities. As an advocate for patients,paramedics seek to be proactive in affecting longterm health care by working in conjunction withother provider agencies, networks, and organizations.The emerging roles and responsibilities of theparamedic include public education, health

promotion, and participation in injury- and illness-prevention programs. As the scope of servicecontinues to expand, the paramedic will function as afacilitator of access to care, as well as an initialtreatment provider.

Paramedics are responsible and accountable tomedical direction, the public, and their peers.Paramedics recognize the importance of researchand actively participate in the design, development,evaluation, and publication of research. Paramedicsseek to take part in lifelong professional developmentand peer evaluation and assume an active role inprofessional and community organizations.

Program GoalsThe Associate of Science in Paramedic Scienceprogram aims to• Enable the student to perform as a paramedic.• Provide didactic instruction in the body of

Length of the Program Two years; one year (27-29 credit hours) of prerequisite work plus 12 monthsof professional course work (40 credit hours).

Structure of the Professional Program Theprerequisites may be taken on a part-time basis; theprofessional program is a full-time programconducted primarily during the day. Clinical activitiesoccur during the evening or on weekends.

Design of the Professional Curriculum Thecurriculum is a competency-based educationprogram of clinical, didactic, and practicalinstruction integrated with a field internship inadvanced emergency care and services.

This program will serve students seeking careers inemergency medical services. It will serve studentsentering the program immediately after high schoolas well as nontraditional students. The majority ofstudents are nontraditional in that they have begun topursue a career in the emergency medical servicesfield on a part-time, full-time, or volunteer basisbefore deciding on a full-time role in emergencymedicine as an EMT—P.

The program follows guidelines established by theIndiana Emergency Medical Services Commission,integrating general-education course work andparamedic science course work leading to anAssociate of Science degree. The degree program willbuild on resources established in the largest andmost comprehensive EMT—paramedic program inIndiana, the program at Wishard Hospital. In additionto classroom and laboratory facilities located on theIndiana University–Purdue University Indianapoliscampus, area health care facilities involved in thepreparation of EMT—paramedics in this programinclude Wishard Hospital, Wishard AmbulanceService, Avon Fire Department, and Riley Hospital forChildren.

Location of Clinicals The primary locations of theclinical rotations are in Indianapolis. A few rotationsmay be required elsewhere in central Indiana.

Additional Costs In addition to regular universityfees, students will need to purchase a personalstethoscope, EKG caliper, and uniform for the clinicalrotation. Contact the program for a current costsheet.

Opportunity for Students to Work Somestudents have part-time jobs while completing theprofessional course work.

Description of Facilities The program offices arelocated at Wishard Memorial Hospital. The classroomand laboratory are located in the Wayne TownshipTraining Academy. The primary clinical site is atWishard Ambulance Service. Other clinical sites maybe available in central Indiana.

Admissions General Information Studentsaccepted into the program must complete theschool’s and the program’s admission requirementsbefore the first day of classes. Admission to theprofessional program is competitive; therefore,completion of the prerequisites does not guaranteeadmission to the program.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Length of the Program 10 months ofprofessional course work beginning with fallsemester. The course of study consists of eightcourses (24 credit hours), including four didacticcourses and four practicum courses.

Structure of the Program Histotechnologydidactic course lecture teleconferences are deliveredonce per week during the day; practicum coursework is performed at qualified clinical sites and canbe completed at any time approved by the supervisorin the student’s laboratory.

Design of Professional Curriculum Studentswho are employed in laboratories that qualify asclinical affiliate sites are accepted into theHistotechnology Program to begin the course of studyin the fall semester. The curriculum consists ofdidactic and practicum courses delivered by distancelearning to students pursuing on-the-job training inhistology laboratories. The 120-minute interactiveaudio teleconference lectures are delivered once perweek and are accompanied by related assignmentsthat require approximately 3.5 hours per week forcompletion. The practicum course modules aredesigned to be accomplished in approximately 16hours per week; however, as part of on-the-jobtraining, it is assumed that students in the programreceive full-time technical training at their place ofemployment.

The Histotechnology Program is designed to:• Provide educational and clinical experiences in

all area of histologic technology to preparestudents for beginning a career as a histologictechnician.

• Provide medical communities nationwide withindividuals qualified to effectively carry out thefunctions of the histotechnology discipline.

• Assist affiliate site’s histology trainers in effectivelymeeting the student’s needs in accomplishing thecourse work.

• Assist students in reaching their goals byproviding academic, occupational, and personalguidance.

Program Facilities The Histotechnology Programoffice is located in Coleman Hall at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). “Classrooms”for delivery of teleconferences, as well as practicaltraining sites, are located in institutions throughout theUnited States that qualify as clinical affiliates wherestudents are located. Clinical affiliate sites may varyfrom year to year, as training needs change.

Additional Costs of the Program In addition toIndiana resident tuition and course fees, students arerequired to purchase books. Completion of courserequirements may necessitate the purchase oflaboratory supplies not ordinarily used at the student’straining facility laboratory. Clinical training laboratoriesmay cover some expenses for laboratory supplies andmailing costs for submission of assignments to theprogram office. Additional training costs to studentand/or laboratory are estimated at $400.00 per year.

Feasibility of Work for Students Since theprogram is designed with the on-the-job student inmind, full-time employment in a histology laboratoryis assumed.

Medical ImagingTechnologyAn educational program in medical imaging technologyis located on the Indiana University–Purdue UniversityIndianapolis campus. This program is an advancedprogram for the registered radiographer.

Description of the Profession The medicalimaging technologist in radiologic sciences is askilled radiographer qualified to provide patientservice in interventional procedures, computedtomography, ultrasonography, and magneticresonance imaging. These areas represent the mostadvanced imaging in diagnostic radiology. Effectivemedical imaging technologists utilize principles ofradiation protection as they determine exposurefactors and position patients for a variety ofexaminations. Many of the patient examinations arehighly specific, utilizing computers or computerizedequipment. Medical imaging technologists are alsocapable of assisting in the surgical proceduresperformed during the examination, assessing thetechnical quality of the image, and providing basicpatient care. The technologist must function as amember of the health care team.

Graduates of the Program Graduates receive aBachelor of Science degree and are eligible to takespecialty examinations depending on their major areaof concentration.

Credentials Required to Practice RT(R) (ARRT)registered radiographer. Advanced qualificationcredentials are available and may be required by someemployers. Currently, depending on the clinical majorcompleted, graduates may be eligible for one or moreof the following credentials in addition to theRT(R)(ARRT) required for entry into the program:from the ARRT, cardiovascular-interventional technology(CV), computed tomography (CT), mammography(M), and magnetic resonance imaging (MR),ultrasound (U); from the ARDMS, medical sonography(RDMS) and vascular technology (RVT).

Theory and clinicalexperiences are provided in interventionalprocedures, computed tomography, magneticresonance imaging, and ultrasound. Students receivetheory in all areas and select one major for clinicalexperiences.

Length of the Program A new class begins withsummer session II each year and continues throughthe end of the spring semester the next year (10.5months).

Structure of the Program Students haveprofessional classes or clinical experiences from 8a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some eveningclinical hours may be required.

Students who received their radiography educationwithout transferable university credit and who havefull credentials in radiography (ARRT) may beawarded credit for their credentials and experienceand/or may petition to test out of professionalradiography courses. Nuclear MedicineTechnologyAn educational program in nuclear medicinetechnology is located on the IndianaUniversity–Purdue University Indianapolis campusand housed in the IU School of Medicine Departmentof Radiology, section on nuclear medicine.

Description of the Profession The graduatenuclear medicine technologist is qualified to providepatient diagnostic and therapeutic services usingionizing radiation in the form of gamma rays, X rays,and beta rays. These radiations emanate fromradioactive materials. Nuclear medicine technologistsperform patient organ imaging procedures,radioactive analysis of biological specimens (blood,urine), and some therapeutic applications ofradioactive materials. Effective nuclear medicinetechnologists utilize principles of radiation protectionas they prepare and administer radioactive materialsfor a variety of examinations. They are capable ofperforming quality control procedures on theinstrumentation and radioactive materials. Nuclearmedicine technologists also assist physicians inclinical procedures, give intravenous injections, drawblood, assess the technical quality of the studies, andprovide basic patient care. The nuclear medicinetechnologist must function as a member of the healthcare team.

Graduates of the Program Graduates receive aBachelor of Science degree from Indiana Universityand are eligible to take the certification examinationof the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists(ARRT) and the Nuclear Medicine TechnologyCertification Board (NMTCB) to become certified as anuclear medicine technologist, R.T.(N) or C.N.M.T.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMLength of the Program A new class beginssummer session II each year and continues for 22months.

Structure of the Professional Program Thecurriculum is designed for persons with no previousexperience in nuclear medicine, althoughexperienced technologists may apply for admission.During the junior year, students have classes onMonday, Wednesday, and Friday plus up to eighthours of clinical practicum on each Tuesday andThursday and four hours on Friday mornings. Seniorstudents have up to eight hours of clinical practicumon each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday plus classeson Tuesday and Thursday. Clinical practicums mayalso require some evening and off-hour assignments.

Design of the Professional Curriculum Thisdegree is designed to prepare qualified nuclearmedicine technologists. The principal aim of thedegree is to provide students with educationalexperiences that will permit them to develop thecompetencies required to function effectively asnuclear medicine technologists. The curriculumintegrates theory and clinical experience.

Opportunity for Students to Work Some part-time employment may be available in the radiologydepartments at the Indiana University Medical Center.There are no restrictions on the number of hours astudent may work during the program as long aswork does not interfere with program requirements.The student must, however, recognize that theprofessional curriculum requires approximately 25 to35 clock hours per week of on-campus participationin classroom, laboratory, and clinical course work.Study time and completion of general educationcourses must also be considered. While most of theprofessional course activities are scheduled duringdaytime hours Monday through Friday, there aresome clinical experiences that may require studentparticipation during evenings or other off hours.Please contact the program for more information.

Program Facilities The nuclear medicinetechnology program is offered in Indianapolis at theIndiana University Medical Center. The offices,classrooms, and library are located on the first floor

of the Clinical Building. Students obtain clinicalexperience in the nuclear medicine areas of radiologydepartments located in University, Riley, Wishard, andVeterans Administration hospitals. Two other clinicaleducation sites in the Indianapolis area are also used.

Accreditation The bachelor’s degree in nuclearmedicine technology is fully accredited by the JointReview Committee on Educational Programs inNuclear Medicine Technology.

Description of the Profession Radiation therapyinvolves the use of different forms of ionizingradiation for the treatment of benign and malignanttumors. Radiation therapists administer theprescribed dose of ionizing radiation to specific sitesof the patient’s body as directed by the physician.They operate varied types of equipment, includinghigh energy linear accelerators, and work with

radioactive materials. In addition, radiation therapistsobserve the clinical progress of the patientundergoing radiation therapy, observe the first signsof any complication, and determine when treatmentshould be withheld until a physician may beconsulted.

Graduates of the Program The RadiationTherapy Program is designed to prepare graduates tomeet the scope of practice standards for radiationtherapy. Upon completion of the program, graduatesare eligible to take the radiation therapy certificationexamination given by the American Registry ofRadiologic Technologists (ARRT). Having successfullypassed this exam, certificate holders are classified asregistered radiation therapists, R.T.(T)(ARRT).

Licensure Required to Practice Licensure ofradiation therapists is not required in Indiana, butlicensure requirements are mandated in some states.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMLength of the Program The radiation therapyprogram is a four-year baccalaureate degree programand has two tracks: one for the nonradiographer andone for the radiographer. For the nonradiographer,the program is composed of 50 credit hours ofprerequisite and general-education requirements anda 22-month professional core in the junior andsenior years. For the radiographer, the programincludes general-education requirements and a 20-month professional core.

Structure of the Program The classroom andclinical experiences are provided Monday throughFriday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with continuousenrollment during the professional core.

Minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average 2.5on a 4.0 scale; this requirement is applied at the timeof program application. Grades from remedialcourses are not calculated into the grade pointaverage of the prerequisite courses to determine theadmission index.

RadiographyEducational programs in radiography are located onthe following Indiana University campuses: IndianaUniversity–Purdue University Indianapolis, IndianaUniversity Northwest (Gary), Indiana University SouthBend, Indiana University Kokomo, and IndianaUniversity–Purdue University Fort Wayne. Thefollowing information is for the Indiana UniversitySchool of Medicine Radiography Program located onthe IUPUI campus.

Description of the Profession Radiologictechnology is a science involving the medical use of Xrays in the diagnosis of disease. A radiologist is aphysician specializing in this science, and aradiologic technologist (radiographer) is thetechnical assistant to the radiologist. Radiographersmake up the largest group of imaging professionals.Their principal duties consist of performing X-rayexaminations of patients. They also assist influoroscopic examinations and in specialradiographic procedures. Other tasks performed byradiographers vary. Radiographers must be able tohandle seriously ill and injured patients to obtain themaximum amount of information without injury tothe patient and with the least amount of pain anddiscomfort from the examination. They may assist theradiologist in some complex procedures, ofteninvolving the injection of opaque media throughneedles or catheters. Radiographers must be welleducated and experienced in aseptic techniques,requiring skills often comparable to those of nursesin some specialties. Most technologists are employedin hospitals, clinics, and physicians’ offices.

Graduates of the Program Graduates receive anassociate of science degree from Indiana Universityand are eligible to take the certification examinationof the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists(ARRT) to become certified as a registeredtechnologist, radiography, R.T.(R).

Credential Required to Practice R.T.(R)Registered Radiographer.

Indiana Certification Requirements to PracticeState certification is required to operate an X-raymachine. The state accepts the ARRT registry forcertification.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMLength of the Program A new class begins insummer session II each year and continues for 22months, including all summer sessions.

Structure of the Program The 22-monthcurriculum for radiography is based on a combinationof professional courses, general education courses,and clinical experience. Professional classes andclinical experience are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4p.m., Monday through Friday. While in the program,students are also required to participate in clinicalexperience on two Saturdays, during approximatelyfour weeks of evening rotations and one holiday.Indiana University holidays are observed. The scheduleof classes and clinical experiences closely follow theIUPUI academic calendar. Vacations do not constituteexcused absences and, if taken, must occur during thebreaks between academic sessions of the university.

Design of the Professional Curriculum Thegeneral education courses, professionallecture/laboratory course material, and clinicalexperiences are integrated throughout the program.

Additional Cost In addition to regular universitytuition and fees, students should expect to payprogram-related expenses such as books, uniforms,and other supplies. Contact the program for a currentcost sheet.

Opportunity for Students to Work There are norestrictions on the number of hours a student maywork during the program. The radiology departmentsof many hospitals have part-time evening andweekend positions that are suitable for radiographystudents. The student must recognize, however, thatthe professional curriculum requires approximately25-32 clock hours per week of on-campusparticipation in classroom, laboratory, and clinicalcourse work. Study time and completion of generaleducation courses must also be considered. Whilemost of the professional course activities arescheduled during daytime hours on Monday throughFriday, there are several clinical experiences thatrequire student participation on weekends andevenings. Please contact the program for moreinformation.

Program Facilities The Radiography Program isoffered in Indianapolis at the Indiana UniversityMedical Center. The program offices, classrooms, andlaboratory facilities are located on the first floor ofthe Clinical Building. Students obtain clinicalexperience in the radiology departments located inIndiana University, Riley, Wishard, and the VeteransAdministration hospitals and the Regenstrief HealthCente,r and St. Francis Hospital (Beech Grove and

Indianapolis). Students should expect to rotate to atleast four clinical sites during the program.

ADMISSION

General InformationStudents accepted into the program must complete theHealth Professions Programs (HPP) and the followingprogram admission requirements before the first day ofclasses. Admission to the professional program iscompetitive; therefore, completion of the prerequisitesdoes not guarantee admission to the program.

Criteria Used for Selection of Class In theselection of applicants to be offered admission, theRadiologic Science Admission Committee considersacademic background, including total andscience/mathematics GPA, the completion of general-education courses that are part of the associatedegree curriculum, any background applicants mayhave in a health–care related area, including but notlimited to radiography, previous application foradmission to the program, and the results of apersonal interview.

Class Size 37 new students are admitted to startthe professional program at the beginning of summersession II each year.

Specific RequirementsIn addition to the Health Professions Programs’admission policies and procedures found at thebeginning of this section of the bulletin, the followingapply to the Radiography Program.

Minimum Qualifications Meeting minimum criterialisted below will qualify applicants for continuation ofthe admission process. It does not guarantee admissionto the program. Applicants for admission to theAssociate of Science in Radiography degree may qualifyfor admission consideration in one of two ways:

A. Applicants with fewer than 12 college credithours Completion of fewer than 12 credithours of GPA-earning courses including theprerequisite courses in composition (ENG W131)and algebra (MATH 110 or 111).Qualifying Criteria:1. High school cumulative academic GPA of at

least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The high school GPAis calculated using college preparatoryacademic courses only. Other courses, suchas band, chorus, physical education, etc., areremoved from the GPA when it is calculated.

2. High school mathematics/science GPA of atleast 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

3. Qualifications for regular admission to IUPUIif not already admitted.

4. College GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.5. No less than a C in either of the prerequisite

courses.

Description of the Profession Respiratorytherapists evaluate and treat patients withcardiopulmonary disorders and are actively involvedin health promotion and disease prevention. Theycare for all types of patients, from the prematureinfant to the extremely old, and practice in a varietyof settings, ranging from patients’ homes to thehighest level of critical care units. Students in therespiratory therapy major will learn diagnosticprocedures ranging from physical examination to theuse of highly sophisticated computerized equipment.Patient treatment skills will include everything fromthe administration of inhaled medications tomaintaining critically ill patients on ventilators. TheBachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy willprovide graduates with the critical thinking andproblem-solving skills that they will need to besuccessful in their careers.

Graduates of the Program The graduates of theRespiratory Therapy Program are eligible for statelicensure examinations as well as examinationsoffered by the National Board for Respiratory Care.Completion of the program will allow a graduate tosit for the Registered Respiratory Therapist (R.R.T.)examination.

Licensure Requirements to Practice Graduatesof the Respiratory Therapy Program will file anapplication for a license as a Respiratory CarePractitioner in the State of Indiana. Over 40 statesrequire Respiratory Therapists to be licensed in orderto practice.

Bachelor of Science inRespiratory Therapy at IndianaUniversity–Purdue UniversityIndianapolisEDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Description of the Program The Bachelor ofScience in Respiratory Therapy is offered by aconsortium that includes Indiana University, Ball StateUniversity, the University of Indianapolis, and ClarianHealth. Students will take their prerequisite coursework on the IUPUI campus, and their professionalcourse work will be offered in classrooms andlaboratories located at Methodist Hospital. A freemonorail service connects Methodist Hospital withthe IUPUI campus. The professional phase of theprogram consists of a carefully planned sequence ofclassroom and laboratory instruction, as well as over1000 hours of supervised clinical instruction. Clinicalinstruction is provided in a variety of hospitals andhealth care facilities located throughout centralIndiana.

Length of the Program Four years; two years ofprerequisite course work plus two years (70 credithours) of professional course work.

Structure of the Program The prerequisites maybe taken on a part-time basis; the professionalprogram is full-time and is conducted primarilyduring the day.

Design of the Professional Curriculum Theprogram is designed to cover all aspects ofrespiratory therapy, with an emphasis on general andcritical care.

Program Facilities The program offices arelocated in Coleman Hall on the IUPUI campus and inWile Hall on the Methodist Hospital campus.

Location of Clinical Sites Clinical educationexperiences occur in a variety of settings, includinghospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes,physician offices, and other health care facilities inIndiana. Most of the clinical sites are located within a60-minute drive from downtown Indianapolis, andmany are in Indianapolis. Students are expected toprovide their own transportation to all clinical sites.

Additional Cost In addition to standard universityfees, students are responsible for travel to clinics,laboratory fees, clinical fees, uniforms, vaccinationcosts, and CPR card fees. Students may be required toattend professional meetings or seminars, and feesfor attending these events may be necessary.Membership in the professional organization isrequired.

Opportunity for Students to Work Moststudents work part-time while completing theprogram. Students may be eligible to apply for a

General Information Students accepted into theprogram must complete the school’s and theprogram’s admission requirements before the firstday of classes. Admission to the professional programis competitive; therefore, completion of theprerequisites does not guarantee admission to theprogram. At the time of application, students mayrequest any of the following options: repeatedcourses, academic bankruptcy, and fresh start. Formore information about these options, please see anadvisor.

Total Number of Prerequisite Hours 55.Graduates from accredited associate degreerespiratory therapy programs are eligible to apply;however, all applicants must complete theprerequisites.

Minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average 2.5on a 4.0 scale. This requirement is applied at thetime of program application and must be maintained.Students admitted for fall 2004 will have a minimumGPA requirement of 2.3 on a 4.0 scale.

Minimum Grade Requirement in a Stated Mathor Sciences Prerequisite Course C (2.0 on a4.0 scale).

Interview All qualified applicants must participatein an interview.

Technical Standards All accepted students will berequired to sign a statement certifying that they canmeet the program’s technical standards.

Medical Requirements All students are requiredto complete a medical history and document acomplete vaccination program once accepted into theRespiratory Therapy Program.

Shadowing Experience All applicants arerequired to complete and document at least 3 hoursof clinical observation with a respiratory therapist.For students admitted for fall 2004, the shadowingexperience is highly recommended but not required.

Academic RequirementsStudents must comply with the academic regulationsand policies of Indiana University and the School ofMedicine Health Professions Programs. Additionally,the following regulations and policies govern theprofessional portion of the Respiratory TherapyProgram.

General Policies and Regulations1. Students are required to obtain a grade of C or

higher in all professional course work.2. Students who receive a grade of C– or lower in a

professional course may be dismissed from theprogram. Students who are dismissed mayreapply for admission.

3. Students must maintain American HeartAssociation Healthcare Provider CPR or AmericanRed Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer statusthroughout their term in the Respiratory TherapyProgram.

Probation1. A student will be placed on probation if the

semester and/or cumulative GPA falls below 2.3.2. A student will be placed on probation if there is a

failure to progress either academically orprofessionally. The following are examples offailure to progress. Probation resulting from a failure toprogress is not limited to these examples:• failure to maintain CPR status; • poor attendance in classroom, clinical, or

laboratory classes resulting in poor academicprogress and performance;

• failure to meet academic standards as setforth in the course syllabus, such as failure toturn in papers and assignments resulting inpoor academic progress and performance;

• failure to conform to the AmericanAssociation for Respiratory Care Code ofEthics and/or clinical performancecharacteristics as set forth in the ProgramHandbook and Clinical Syllabus;

• lack of clinical progress, failure todemonstrate clinical patient safety or failureto advance through the clinical skillsprogression;

• any critical incidence documentation forunsafe or poor clinical performance.

3. As a condition of probation, the student will benotified of conditions and requirements necessaryfor remediation for continuation in the program.When the student satisfactorily completes allprogram requirements as well as those stipulatedby the School and University, and when the reasonfor the administrative action has been correctedor the deficiency remediated, the student will bereturned to good standing. All probationaryactions are reviewed at the end of each semester.

Dismissal Upon the recommendation of the facultyin the student’s program, a student may be dismissedfrom the School. Dismissal is based on the failure tomeet academic or professional standards. The studentwill be informed of the dismissal in writing by the Dean.1. A student may be dismissed from the program if a

grade of C– or lower is recorded for anyprofessional course.

2. A student will be dismissed from the program ifprobationary status is continued for two consecutivesemesters. In addition, once placed on probation, astudent will be dismissed from the program ifcontinued poor academic performance, unsafe orpoor clinical performance, or unprofessionalbehavior is documented (including documentationof a critical incident).

3. A student will be dismissed from the program ifthere is failure to complete the bachelor’s degreethree years subsequent to the initial admission tothe professional program.

Appeals Procedure On occasion, students andfaculty will have differing beliefs, perceptions, oraccounts of situations or events. It is important forthose parties directly involved to discuss theirdifferences honestly in order to reach a solution.However, if no mutually satisfactory resolution can bereached in these discussions, the matter may beappealed to an appropriate person.A. Discuss problem, concern, or disagreement with

faculty member directly involved. (If no facultyare directly involved, contact either your facultyadvisor or the Program Director.)

B. If the matter cannot be resolved by directdiscussion, then the student and the facultymember/instructor will meet with a superiorfaculty member, such as the director of clinicaleducation or program director, for review.

This course focuses on the mostimportant clinical laboratory procedures andequipment used by the respiratory therapist tosupport critically ill patients. PULM F395 Respiratory Care Practicum II(4 cr.) This clinical practicum introduces students tovariations in oxygen delivery and basic mechanicalventilation. Treatment modalities and hemodynamicmonitoring on mechanically ventilated patients will beintegrated.

PULM F405 Neonatal-Pediatric RespiratoryCare (3 cr.) This course outlines fetal physiology,cardiorespiratory transition, and respiratorymanagement of neonatal pathologies, includingrespiratory distress syndrome. Cardiorespiratorytechniques for the pediatric patient as well aspediatric trauma and transport are reviewed.

PULM F420 Introduction to Research inRespiratory Care (2 cr.) This course examinesresearch in respiratory care and applies basicstatistics and concepts of research design.

PULM F430 Management and Leadership forRespiratory Care (3 cr.) Specific theory andpractice applied to directing and managing arespiratory therapy department, including themanagerial functions of budgeting, controlling,organization, planning, staffing, and coordinating.Leadership and skills pertinent to these functions aswell as effective communication and professionalismare included.

PULM F440 Advanced Cardiac Life Support (2cr.) This course introduces students to the didacticand technical skills needed for successful proficiencyof Advanced Cardiac Life Support standards as setforth by the American Heart Association.

PULM F444 Cardiorespiratory Pharmacology II(2 cr.) P: F333. An overview of pharmacologic agentsand their effect on the various body systems. Drugeffects on the respiratory, circulatory, and nervoussystems are emphasized.

PULM F445 Seminar in Cardiorespiratory Care (1-5 cr.) Seminar is designed to meet the specialtyselected by the student. Students may repeat thiscourse with a new specialty area requested. Eachstudent is required to take a minimum of one hourand a maximum of five hours.

PULM F451 Cardiorespiratory Monitoring andSpecial Techniques (3 cr.) This course reviewselectrocardiograms, intracranial pressure monitoring,capnography, and pulmonary artery monitoringtechniques. Case studies emphasizing these specialprocedures are presented.

PULM F456 Respiratory Care Practicum III(6 cr.) This course allows students to applyadvanced patient assessment techniques, informationgathering skills, and communication and leadershipskills in the neonatal/pediatric and adult critical careclinical settings.

PULM F461 Pulmonary Rehabilitation andGeriatrics (3 cr.) This course gives an overview ofrehabilitation therapies and techniques applicable tochronic lung disease, as well as respiratory therapyhome care. Basic concepts of gerontology andgeriatrics are presented.

PULM F480 Patient Education Techniques forRespiratory Therapists (3 cr.) Educationtechniques for patients and families dealing withchronic respiratory disease. Topics include asthma,chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and smokingcessation education. Assessment of learningreadiness, reading levels, and patient comprehensionwill be addressed.

PULM F485 Respiratory Care Practicum IV(6 cr.) Students will manage patients in critical caresettings with emphasis on cardiopulmonaryassessment and monitoring. They will participate inpulmonary rehabilitation, home care, advancedcardiac life support, pulmonary functions,polysomnography, and other special procedures.
