Story Ideas: 2013 season continues with Firestone Freedom 100 After nearly a month away from the track, the 2013 Firestone Indy Lights season resumes on the sport’s grandest stage, the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, for the Firestone Freedom 100. Carlos Munoz has won the last two races and taken control of the point standings. The Colombian leads St. Petersburg race winner Jack Hawksworth by 21 points. Can he maintain his point lead at Indianapolis? First oval of 2013 Nearly half of the drivers entered in Firestone Freedom 100 have prior racing experience at Indianapolis in Firestone Indy Lights. Six (6) rookies will make their first oval start in the series, including Indianapolis natives Kyle O’Gara and Jimmy Simpson, who will make their series debuts. Double duty for Munoz Andretti Autosport’s Carlos Munoz will be a very busy driver in the Month of May. The Colombian, who leads the Firestone Indy Lights point standings, will start his first Indianapolis 500 from the front row in the fifth entry from car owner Michael Andretti’s team as well as race in the Freedom 100 on May 24. Should Munoz be able to complete the double, he would be the fourth driver to race both races on the same weekend. Sebastian Saavedra, Jeff Simmons and Marty Roth are the other drivers who have raced both events. Can Sam Schmidt Motorsports win at Indy again? Sam Schmidt Motorsports has won seven Firestone Freedom 100s with drivers ThiagoMedeiros (2004), Jaime Camara (2005), Alex Lloyd (2007), Wade Cunningham, (2009, 2010) and Josef Newgarden (2011) and Esteban Guerrieri (2012). The team finished second with Jay Howard in 2006 and Richard Antinucci in 2008. It returns this season with four cars for drivers Gabby Chaves, Jack Hawksworth, Sage Karam and Kyle O’Gara. Will one of those drivers keep up the string of the team’s success? . Austin returns for another shot at Indianapolis Chase Austin, the first African-American driver to race in a Firestone Indy Lights event at Indianapolis, returns to the Speedway for a third consecutive year. The 23- year-old from Eudora, Kan., has never finished outside the top-10 at Indianapolis. He will drive a car fielded by Bryan Herta Autosport/Jeffrey Mark Motorsport. NBC Sports Network to air Firestone Freedom 100 The Firestone Freedom 100 will be the first live televised race for Firestone Indy Lights in 2013. NBC Sports Network will televise all races with Mike King and Jake Query calling the action.
Race Notes: This is the 11th Firestone Indy Lights race at Long Beach. Thiago Medeiros (2004), Alex Lloyd (2007) and Josef Newgarden (2011) are the only drivers to win the Firestone Freedom 100 and the Firestone Firehawk Cup in the same season. Carlos Munoz and Jack Hawksworth are the only drivers who have previously won a race in Firestone Indy Lights entered in the Firestone Freedom 100. Six (6) rookie drivers are entered in the Firestone Freedom 100. All will be making their first start at Indianapolis. Two rookies, Kyle O’Gara and Jimmy Simpson, will be making their first Firestone Indy Lights start. Season To Date:
Carlos Munoz won back-to-back races at Barber Motorsports Park and Streets of Long Beach. It was his third and fourth career Firestone Indy Lights wins, respectively. Munoz has all three Sunoco Pole Awards this season.
