From The Principal Maleny Reading Showcase Ten local principals visited our school recently along with our Assistant Regional Director to observe how reading is taught in our school. We are very honoured to host this event and I thank teachers for opening up their classrooms and sharing their practices with other local schools. We would love more parents to volunteer to read with students as daily reading makes a huge difference in assisting students to become successful readers. Our school’s focus this year is reading if you would like to know more about our schools reading program or how to improve your child’s reading please don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher, our Reading Coach and Yr 4 teacher Mr Heiniger or myself. All children will participate in a march past Monday morning at 9:00 to create some team spirit. Our junior students will participate in a program running from 9:00 - 12:30 on Monday and our senior students will commence events at 12:20 - 2:50 on Monday and 8:50 - 2:50 on Tuesday. The weather looks perfect, see you on the oval. School Report Cards Student Reports will be given to students this Wednesday to bring home. Parent Teacher Interviews Parent teacher interviews (years P-6) will be held in week two of next Term, forms will come home this week. Please go on line to book your interview time or contact your child’s teacher in person. SWPBS (School Wide Positive Behaviour Support)

The School Wide Positive Behaviour Rule for this fortnight is ‘Be Responsible’ with the focus buzz phrase of "I Choose

to Defuse".

This means that to be responsible students will take responsibility for their own actions. Regardless of what bad things

we experience or others may do to us we are still responsible for how we react. It is not acceptable to justify

inappropriate behaviour as a result of someone else’s behaviour towards us. Building children’s resilience will assist in

this area. Winter Uniform Our coldest weeks this year will come in Term Three please use the holidays to purchase a school jumper available from the uniform shop or a warm plain navy jumper without logos, stripes etc. (grey, black or maroon are not acceptable) or track suit if your child doesn’t have the correct winter uniform. Holiday Black Shoe Shopping Please ensure if you are needing to replace your children’s school shoes due to wear and tear that you purchase black jogger shoes to comply with our uniform policy. Our goal is that all students will have black shoes to commence 2016. School Disco this Thursday Theme: Favourite Movie character. $4 entry food, drinks and glow products on sale. Prep to Yr 2 5:00 – 6:15 Pick up from in the Hall. Yr 3 to Yr 6 6:30 – 8:30 Pick up from in the Hall. Helpers are required to help in canteen please volunteer your help on the night. Parents are required to collect their child from the hall in person, children will not be permitted to leave the hall after the disco for any reason. Please note this event is a fun night for students to participate in and acts a fundraiser for the student council and the P&C. Maleny State High School Visit Year six students will have the opportunity this Thursday at 10:00am to see the Yr 9 Maleny State High students in action when they present a number of drama presentations they have been working on over the Term. It is wonderful to have such a strong partnership with a great local high school in walking distance from our school.

SWPBS (School Wide Positive Behaviour Support) - Congratulations to students that have earned the right to be in the Be Super, Be Awesome and Be Epic clubs this Term. Be Super Club members will enjoy a classroom privilege from their teacher, Be Awesome club members will have special lunch time access to Computer Lab on Thursday and Be Epic members will be treated to cake, games and music with Chappy Becky in the hall at Wednesday lunchtime. Please reinforce with your children the idea that we do not solve disagreements by being physical. That we use our words, walk away or seek a teacher to assist. A school computers will be available before and after school. If required please see Desley. Many thanks for your involvement in this process. Have a Happy and Safe Holiday Thank you so much to the many parents and community members that have volunteered in any capacity to help out at our school this term. We simply cannot achieve what we do without you. Thank you also to the entire staff at Maleny State School who work tirelessly to ensure our children are receiving the best education they can possibly receive. I look forward to an exciting Term Three after the break. Take Care, John

Classroom News 3/4 News What a busy term it has been. Thank you to all the parents who have supported us in so many ways throughout the term. We feel very fortunate to have so many wonderful parents. As part of their History assessment all the children have written a historical recount for a convict that was on board a ship in the First Fleet. They have all worked hard and now for English they are busy writing another recount from the perspective of a person who could have been in or around the Port Jackson colony around the time of arrival of the ships of the First Fleet. In History the focus was on using historical sources and information while our English recount will focus on the use of descriptive language. We’ve enjoyed dressing up to help us tell our stories. Here are some extracts from our historical recounts. “Anyway I was a chimney sweep and it was boring and hard. My crime was stealing. I still don’t understand as it was only a loaf of bread. I was sentenced to 7 years transportation to Botany Bay.” Luca “I was finally on the ship, the Lady Penrhyn and it stank. I couldn’t sleep for nights and everyone was throwing up. It was disgusting. The guards gave us yucky food and said we couldn’t go up on the deck until they couldn’t see land. Finally they couldn’t see land but it was raining so they wouldn’t let us up. So we became even sicker and some people in my cabin died. We stopped at this place called Rio de Janeiro and before that we stopped at the Canary Islands. After Rio we went to the Cape of Good Hope. Then finally after 10 months at sea we could see the new land called New South Wales.” By Libby “I really don’t want to go to New South Wales. I want to go back home to freedom.” By Darcy We’ve also been looking at still life drawing.

4A Update Believe it or not, Term 2 is over! I’m sure we’re all looking forward to a well deserved holiday. In class we have finished all our assessment and have enjoyed an inspiring visit from Gary Crew who shared his novel ‘The Watertower’ with us. Before the term wraps up, we have our Interhouse Athletics Carnival. I wonder which team will be victorious this year? Those students who are successful on the day will be heading off to the District Athletics next term. Congratulations must go to our Instrumental group on the great progress they have made in such a short time. Our class was lucky enough to be invited to listen to their performance after they had spent a whole day with neighbouring schools have an intensive lesson on their chosen instruments. Wow, did they put on a good show! Not to be outdone, the choir members spent a morning entertaining everyone in Erowal and from all reports they impressed all concerned. Science has once again captured our interest with experiments on properties of materials to see which would make the most suitable sole on a shoe with a particular purpose in mind. Best wishes for a safe, relaxing holiday and I look forward to seeing you all next term.

Which material is best? Concentrating on Studyladder. 4B’s Reading Rocks This semester 4B has been powering on with their reading. They have taken on the comprehension strategies of Making Connections, Predicting, Summarising and Inferring and are now looking forward to tackling some new strategies for Semester Two. 4B’s reading week consists of Modelled Reading by the teacher, Shared Reading – where the teacher with the class engage in the reading strategy, Guided Reading – where each individual student works with their teacher to master the strategy and Independent Reading – where the student works independently to display what they can do without help. The children have really impressed everyone who comes into our room with the way that they work, even to the point where principals from other schools have come to see how well we do things. Well done to all the Modelled Reading students in 4B and don’t forget about keeping track of the books that you read for the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Guided Reading Independent Reading READ ON DUDES!

Year 5 and 6 Inter School Sport The Year 5 and 6 students recently participated in Interschool soccer and netball. Everyone had a great time during the games. They displayed great sportsmanship and the ‘Maleny Spirt’ shone through. We would like to thank everyone who helped out, especially Luka’s Mum Pippa and Sophie Irwin. Thanks also to the families and friends who came to support us. All teams played really well, with a special mention to the Boys A soccer team, who managed to bring home the trophy.

Music Notes Last Monday 15th June our School Choir and Recorder Ensemble ‘braved’ the rainy weather and walked to Erowal Nursing Home to present a Concert to the residents there. The Choir sang a number of traditional songs and their favourite ‘Breakaway’. The Recorder Ensemble which has recently expanded with a number of new students, performed three songs including a Jazz piece. As well as our two music groups we had Shelby Johnson from Year 6 perform a solo item ‘Delta Dawn’. It was wonderful to hear many of the Residents singing along during a Choir song ‘I am Australian’ and the Recorder piece ‘Skye Boat Song’. Regards Liz Cripps Classroom Music Teacher

Chappy’s Thoughts Being a Mentor… LOVE My children were watching the movie, “Despicable Me 2” the other day and I began to smile as I heard the character Gru read his bedtime story to the girls. It is a very heart warming scene as Gru, who is a “villain” and not the fatherly type at all, finally opens his heart to the three orphaned girls and allows himself to be vulnerable with them and love them fully and completely. I saw a great and powerful truth emerge from that particular scene and the movie as a whole. The power of LOVE is quite unfathomable and one of the greatest mysteries the human heart can ever experience. When true love touches us and makes its way deep inside of us, it has the power to change our ugliness into a beauty we could never dream of. Love transforms and changes. Love brings joy, and light, kindness, compassion and thankfulness where there might have been only bitterness, hatred and hardness. I love that children just love with no boundaries. They aren’t polluted by suspicion and resentment and they seem to have this uncanny way of breaking down walls that may have taken years to build. Love is a beautiful thing and we need more of it in this world. Last week, Deb Price and myself ran a Mentor Training day and I was struck again by the power of investing time into the lives of a young person, specifically in the role as a mentor. Being a mentor is an opportunity to inspire, motivate and encourage a young person to achieve their full potential and bring joy where joy is not always found. We had 9 people who have committed to giving one hour of their time to one child, for one year and I am so excited about this potentially life changing program that the school is going to implement in Term 3. The simplicity of just loving a child, and listening to them is extremely powerful. If there are any other parents, grandparents or friends who would like to know more about this program please contact me at the school. I hope that everyone has a wonderful end of term and a relaxed and blessed holiday. We will see you all in Term 3.

Not only does it provide a service to parents, but it raises extra funds for P&C. Woolworths donated two large trays of mandarins and apples last week that were distributed to all 15 classes. Their support is much appreciated. The Tuckshop menu and prices are currently being reviewed. Keep an eye out for a new menu in Term 3.
