Refugee committee. What are the responsibilities of the sponsoring group? Sponsoring groups agree to provide the

refugees with care, lodging, settlement assistance and support for the duration of the sponsorship period. Normally, this is

12 months starting from the refugee's arrival in Canada or until the refugee becomes self-sufficient, whichever comes first.

Private sponsors normally support the sponsored refugees by: providing the cost of food, rent and household utilities and

other day-to-day living expenses; providing clothing, furniture and other household goods; locating interpreters; selecting

a family physician and dentist; assisting with applying for provincial health-care coverage; enrolling children in school and

adults in language training; introducing newcomers to people with similar personal interests; providing orientation with

regard to banking services, transportation, etc.; and helping in the search for employment.

www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/publications/ref-sponsor/section-2.asp#a2.7

We have applied to become a sponsoring group. Estimated Budget: For the family who we invited to Canada (mother, fa-

ther and 4 year old child) for a period of one year, the budget provides a very rough estimate, with many built in assump-

tions. Assumptions include that the government will cover all travel, medical, dental and training costs; also that furnish-

ing, appliances and some clothing will be donated.

Expenses: Accommodation/Utilities monthly $ 1,300. Annual: $18,000. Food and Essentials: monthly $ 900. Annual:

$10,800; Clothing Annual 1,000. Discretionary Spending: Monthly $200 Annual: $18,000. Transportation: Monthly $ 180

Annual: $2,160. Sundry Extras: (School Supplies, furniture, Medical etc). Total Annual $ 4,000. Travel to Canada: $ 5,000

Total: 39, 960. The adjustment will be made as emerging government support is clarified and received donation in kind.

So far we collected $6,695.65 plus one of the families donated furnishings to their new home. If you can help please

let us know ([email protected]) . If you want to donate some money please use envelopes marked “refugees”.

What are the Western Catholic Fast Guidelines for

Good Friday?

Fasting means eating only one full meatless (no animal

flesh) meal on this day. However, one may still eat a break-

fast and even a lunch in addition to a full meal if the two

additional small meals do not add up to a second full meal.

Snacking is not allowed. Drinking coffee, tea, juices, etc,

between meals is permitted on fast days. The requirements

are slightly different for those of certain ages. Fasting is

only required of those from ages 18-59, although parents

are expected to teach their children the reasons behind their

fasting, etc. Those with health conditions are excluded.

Note that some Western Bishop Conferences, Eastern Cath-

olic Rites, and Orthodox Christians have different fasting

guidelines, so it is wise to check with your local parish

about expectations. These are simply the minimum expecta-

tions. Additional forms of self-denial, within reason, can

also be spiritually beneficial.
