Alumni Professional Activities

In August of 2004, IITunveiled the new Strengthand Fitness Center. Locatedwithin the Keating SportsCenter, the center has state-of-the art weight and fitnesstraining equipment for use bystudents and staff.

The fitness center will alsobe equipped with anentertainment system whichincludes three flat-screentelevisions, a sound systemand a wireless connectionallowing occupants the abilityto hear the televisionsthrough their own personhead sets.

IIT students gain both a solid academic background and a practical, hands-on experience.The latter comes from working in applied settings, often with our own alumni.

Dr. Roya Ayman presented with herstudents at four National conferences:SIOP, Academy of Management,Gallup Leadership summit and theinternational conferences in Beijing,China.

In addition to having three chapterspublished last year, Ayman was invitedto Istanbul, Turkey, as a member of aninternational research team working onwork family conflict.

Roya is on the editorial board ofApplied Psychology: An InternationalReview and International Journal ofManagement.

Faculty Activities

Over the past year Dr. Lezotte continuedthe implementation of the Institute ofP s y c h o l o g y ’ s C e r t i f i c a t e i nCompensation Management. The firstcertificate is expected to be granted inthe spring of 2005.

Dr. Lezotte also served as a reviewer forthe upcoming issue of the HumanResource Management Journal,dedicated to SIOP articles and authors.

In June of this year, Dr. Lezottecompleted a three-year term as theChairman of the Board of HeartlandHousing Inc. – a not-for-profitorganization that develops housing andjob training for the poor anddisadvantaged.

Scott Morris is involved in a number ofresearch projects investigating genderbias in selection decisions, the validity ofindividualized assessments, andmethods for improving the accuracy ofmeta-analysis.

He is on the editorial board ofOrganizational Behavior and H u m a nDecision Processes.

At both the SIOP and the Academy ofManagement conferences, Dr. Aymanwas selected as the reviewer for twodivisions: Gender and Diversity inOrganizations and OrganizationalBehavior.

Dr. Ayman also was a reviewer for SexRoles, Group & Organizat ionalManagement: An International Journal,Journal of Personality and SocialP s y c h o l o g y , and Human ResouceManagement Journal.

This past summer, Roya was involved indesigning a cross-cultural trainingprogram for Hewitt and Associates. Shehas also been working with IIT’sLeadership Academy as an advisor andassessor.

He continues to be a member of the HHBoard of Directors and the Board ofDirectors of Heartland Alliance, HH’sparent organization.

Dr. Lezotte was also involved, along withDr. Raju, in designing a nationalcertification exam for the prining/graphicsreproduction industry that will be used inhigh schools across the nation.

Finally, he continues his research andconsulting in the area of organizationalclimate and its impact on organizationaleffectiveness.

Dr. Morris also serves as an ad hocreviewer for the British Journal ofMathematical and Statistical Psychology,Psychological Methods, and the SIOPconference.

In addition to his role as a member of theI/O faculty, Scott is also the AssistantDirector of the Institute of Psychology.

Dr. Raju’s research has focused onmeta-analysis, validity generalization,utility of organizational interventions,differential item functioning (item bias),and measurement equivalence of 360-degree feedback assessments.

He is currently serving on the editorialboards of nine different publications,including Journal of Applied Psychology,Journal of Educational Measurement,Personnel Psychology, OrganizationalResearch Methods, and PsychologicalBulletin.

Raju has reviewed proposals for theSIOP, AERA/NCME, and APAconventions. He serves as a member ofthe Technical Advisory Committee of theDepartment of Testing and Assessmentfor both the state of Georgia andMontana.

Dr. Nambury Raju

Dr. Annette Towler has blazed quite atrail prior to joining IIT as an AssociateProfessor. Dr. Towler previously spentthree years as an Assistant Professor atthe University of Colorado-Denver.

She is involved in a number of researchprojects including development ofcharismatic leaders, and a series ofstudies examining the effectiveness ofcomputer-based training.

This research is sponsored by the ArmyResearch Institute from 2004-2006 and isa joint collaboration with Kurt Kraiger,of the University of Tulsa.

Dr. Annette Towler

Dr. Raju also serves as a member of theExamination Committee of theAssociation of State and ProvincialPsychology Boards (ASPPB) and is amember of the University Committee onPromotion and Tenure.

Raju recently worked with Bruce Fisherand Ben Fearing, both of the Center forResearch and Service, on the surveyand task analysis data for the NationalRestaurant Association EducationalFoundation.

Finally, he has also reviewedmanuscripts for Multivariate BehavioralResearch, Psychological Method,Applied Measurement in Education, andBritish Journal of Mathematical andStatistical Psychology.

She has reviewed articles for Journal ofApplied Psychology, Journal ofOccupational Health Psychology andAcademy of management Journal.

During 2004, Annette presented papersat SIOP, AOM, and Society of Personalityand Social Psychology Conference. Shecurrently has papers in press at Journalof Applied Social Psychology, Journal ofEducational research and published inJournal of Occupational HealthPsychology in 2004. In addition, Annetteis listed among Who's Who of AmericanTeachers, 2004.

They say that you can’t get a job until you gainexperience. In the same breath, they’ll tell you howyou can’t gain experience until you have a job.Such is the circular logic that many graduatestudents encounter when they begin their job hunt.

IIT’s Center for Research and Service defies thisstereotypical experience. At IIT, students have theopportunity to gain real work experience, applywhat they learn in the classroom, and work alongsome of the most influential minds in the field.

Director Bruce Fisher has headed the Center since 1998. Fisher himself earned his Ph.D. in I/O Psychology fromIIT, and after many years private consulting, returned to the institution that he felt was the dominant influence in hiscareer. Along with the expertise of Nambury Raju (an IIT Distinguished Professor, the Senior Scientific Advisor, andthe mind that Bruce credits for launching the Center), Fisher and the Center staff provide consulting services to awide variety of clients, including large multinational corporations, small privately held businesses, and non-profitorganizations. Clients often receive consultation in the form of test validation, training, selection, development, anda vast array of other topics. By listening carefully to what the client needs, the Center keeps its finger on the pulseof market demands.

The Center’s existence provides insurmountable support to the psychology department. As a non-for-profitorganization, the Center’s revenue is allocated to IIT students. Financial gain from the Center is translated intostudent scholarships, faculty research and travel support, and investments into new technology. It truly is a uniqueexchange. Students who initially receive financial support (made possible by the Center) are integral to its continualsuccess. Faculty members, whose research is often enabled by the Center, provide consulting and contentknowledge to keep the Center at the edge of innovation. Together, they all contribute to an unmatched learningexperience.

The applied experience that students have access to is immeasurable. IIT students Ben Fearing and Koren Aragakiwork alongside Fisher on a multitude of projects. Additionally, Fisher often taps the resources of other I/O graduatestudents for various psychometric analyses and survey projects. Fisher has a seemingly unlimited pool of talented,motivated individuals who are eager to gain experience. And, while he enjoys seeing students apply their contentknowledge to real-world needs, he further cherishes the opportunity to coach and mentor these students along theway.

In the past year, the Center has expanded to form strategic alliances with other private consulting firms. A largeportion of the Center’s revenue comes as subcontractors of these other firms. SIOP Conference & IIT Reception

Each November, Dr. Roya Ayman opens herhome for a gathering of the IIT I/O community.The event provides an informal environmentthat enables students, faculty, and alumni tolearn more about each other – bothprofessionally and personally.

This annual event has become an invaluablesocial outlet. First year students get theopportunity to question their more seasonedclassmates. Students and faculty relate theirresearch experiences, and alumni networksprovide potential leads to future jobopportunities.

This event allows you to really appreciate the IITacademic experience. People come from allwalks of life with one very important thing incommon – their shared experience at IIT.

Are you a first-year student looking to getinformed about your future years at IIT? Anadvanced student interested in meeting thisyear’s new class? Alumni looking to see how theprogram or campus has changed? An employerlooking to find that one IIT student to fill yourinternship position? Did I mention the food? It’sgot something for everyone!

This year’s event is slated for November 13! Wewill see you there!

IOOB is a graduate student conference heldannually by students for students. The 2004conference was held at The University ofTulsa, OK, with the theme “Moving the Box.”

Speakers such as Drs. Angelo De Nisi, NancyTippins, Eduardo Salas, and Robert Hoganraised issues about stepping outside thetraditional I/O paradigm to bring in new ideasand push the field in new directions.

There were posters and presentations fromstudents as well as interactive workshops fromfaculty and professionals. It was a greatopportunity to meet our fellow students fromother schools.

There were many fun activities planned for usupon arrival, including outings and games. Itwas a great environment to get comments frompeers on our hard work. IOOB is a great placeto get feedback on projects, papers, ideas, andworks in progress. The atmosphere was notstressful, and awards were given for outstandingpapers.

Next year, IOOB will be at The Florida Instituteof Technology in February 2005. Check out thewebsite, IOOB.org, in the coming months formore details and submission deadlines. Let’smake sure that enough students attend torepresent IIT in IOOB Jeopardy this comingyear!

The 19th Annual conference of the Society ofIndustrial-Organizational Psychology washosted right here in Chicago this past April.

A strong turnout of IIT students, faculty, andalumni joined in to learn about newadvancements in the field, mingle with someof the most influential minds in the country,and present some of their own research andfindings. Many congratulations go out to allthose who successfully presented theirresearch at SIOP this year.

As is the tradition, Dr. Roya Ayman hosted theannual IIT SIOP reception. Because it waslocated so close to the heart of the campus, weenjoyed a terrific turnout. It also gave us thewonderful opportunity to celebrate MichaelBurke’s SIOP presidency and Roya Ayman’spromotion to Full Professor.

We were also informed that a fund-raisingcampaign is on the way to fund an endowedchair for Dr. Raju.

Next year’s conference is located in LosAngeles. Mark your calendars for April 15-17 aswe all head west to represent IIT.

Incoming Students

A Tuesday in August began with a circle of professors,teaching assistants, and wide-eyed incoming studentstalking about what brought them together that afternoon.

And so the orientation experience began. Along the way,incoming students were introduced to the program’sacademic setting and familiarized with the layout of thecampus. We met with each member of the faculty, andregistered for classes under the watchful eyes of theteaching assistants – who had been through thisexperience a year prior.

By the end of the day, we felt as if already a seasonedmember of the program. The orientation concludes withan annual reception, where countless students in theprogram, along with the faculty and alumni join in to meetthe new students and rekindle their own orientationexperiences. It makes you aware that the IIT experience,first and foremost, is about people.

A few days later, classes began. But we were ready.Thanks to the orientation, we had already been providedthe resources to be successful.

As program director, I am most pleasedto inform you that IIT was ranked as 6thamong I/O Ph.D. programs in NorthAmerica (see TIP, July 2004).Congratulations to all !

We have modified our CompensationManagement Certificate program and wehope to attract more participants. Foureight-week courses are offered everyyear from Fall through Spring. Studentsin the program can take these aselectives and alumni can take them tofurther specialize. By completing thesecourses, you will earn a certificate incompensation management.

By now, you may know that we havegood and bad news to report regardingour faculty. The bad news is that Dr.Shreya Sakar-Barney has left IIT. Shewas a great colleague, and moreimportantly a great motivator for studentinvolvement in research. We will missher.

The Good news is that Dr. AnnetteTowler joined the Institute of Psychologythis fall as an Associate Professor. Priorto joining IIT, Dr Towler was an AssistantProfessor of Psychology at the Universityof Colorado at Denver for three years.

Dr. Towler conducts research in trainingand development, leadership andstigmatization at work. Her currentresearch involves the design of effectivecomputer-based training and the long-term development of charismatic leaders.She has published in the Journal ofAppl ied Psychology, PersonnelPsychology and O r g a n i z a t i o n a lResearch Methods.

Dr. Towler has taught classes instatistics, social psychology, training anddevelopment and organizationalpsychology. She is in the Who’s Who ofAmerican teachers (2004). Dr Towleralso worked in the private sector for 12years, ostensibly as a management andbusiness trainer. Additionally, Annettebrings with her a large, three-year grant.
