U3O8 INTO UF6
Present Situation
Engineering works are underway
A basic design is under preparation
Capacity : 1,500 t UF6/year
Decision to erect the plant is being
evaluated
INB is erecting a demonstration plant of
isotopic enrichment using centrifuge
technology developed in Brazil
1st: phase : 125 t SWU/year
In the initial phase 10 cascades will be in
production until 2018
We have presently 6 cascades in operation
First utilization of EUP produced in Brazil
was made in 2015 in Angra 1 (40% of 22nd
reload)
In 2016 EUP produced in Brazil will be used
in Argentina reactor CAREM
FCN ENRIQUECIMENTO
ISOTOPIC ENRICHMENT
Brazil has substantial amount of uranium reserves.
The possibilities to discover important additional uranium reserves
are very high
The prospection works have stopped in the eighties and was limited
in terms of areas covered and also the use of new technologies
According to Brazilian law fuel cycle activities are a Monopoly of the
Brazilian State. INB explores these activities in the name of the
Government.
Key Issues
KEY ISSUES AND CHALLENGES
Nuclear Fuel Cycle
INB has a “flexible” Monopoly. Very few people realize this.
Partnership with private companies is already authorized by law
The obligation is to retain 51% of the shares. Major U producers have
demonstrated their interest to establish partnership with INB in the
uranium area. The 51% HAS NEVER been the obstacle.
The key obstacle is the legal framework to receive authorization to
export uranium products. The real challenge is to convince the
Government to establish an Export Policy of Nuclear Materials
Without such assurances private companies are not interested to
invest in the nuclear fuel cycle in Brazil to produce uranium compounds.
