Membership
• Continued growth, a feature of the last 2 years.
• Associate Members up by since 32% since same time last year.
• 32 Associate Members.• Category A Members 6.• Category B Members 18.
Statistics
• Quarterly and annual statistics are a key resource.
• Species Specific Data are once again available.• Poultry remains the largest feed user.• The major change – Dairy grew by 67% between
2002 – 2012.• Dairy now consume ~ 20% of all manufactured
feed.• Dairy up 10% since 2002; Pig down 10%.
Feed Training
• 2013 course intake had 12 positions and all students worked well through their course.
• 2014 course has 13 participants from 7 companies.
• Up-skilling in all elements of feed mill operation.
Feed Training Continued
• NZFMA Board looking at specialist training for sales staff particularly serving the dairy industry.
• A possible course covering nutrition, nutrient requirements, feed resources and practical application of cow feeding.
• In discussions with Agri-One, a joint venture of Massey and Lincoln Universities.
Animal Feeds Review
• MPI established a review of all animal feed sections.
• Looking at potential risk areas e.g., biosecurity, trade, food safety etc.
• NZFMA proactive approach with MPI, a number of visits arranged. Good feedback to date.
Salmonella
• NZFMA undertook industry review of practices of salmonella testing.
• Raw materials and/or Mill equipment / environment and/or Finished feed.
• Guidelines developed re high risk raw materials; sampling sites for mill testing; finished feed.
• Testing laboratory accreditation.• Corrective actions following a positive result.
NZFMA Directory of Products and Services
• A useful reference document listing relevant company suppliers including their contact details to the Feed Industry.
• Contact details include: phone number, physical location, websites email addresses and contact personnel.
Feed Additives
• NZFMA working with legal advisers Chapman Tripp and with expert commentary from MPI developed a flowchart document.
• The document outlines the legal responsibilities and potential liabilities under the Agricultural Components and Veterinary Medicines Act and other relevant legislation.
• Will be updated with MPI website references when MPI have completed their website update.
• Laminated version of this flowchart could then be developed.
