Here are some practical tips for children to follow: Hold the hand of a » responsible adult (younger children). Walk along the » pavement and don’t run. Always walk on » the house side of the pavement, or closest to the shops or paddocks. At driveways , stop » and look up and down to see if you can see any vehicles entering or exiting. Driveways can be dangerous. Watch for vehicles blocking the pavement. If a vehicle is blocking the pavement: check inside the vehicle to see if there is a driver » if you can see a driver, stop a couple of metres » away and see if they are going to move if you cannot see a driver, look for signs that the » vehicle may be about to move, such as exhaust fumes, reverse lights or engine noise if there is no driver in the car and the engine is » not running, walk around the vehicle on the house side if there is no room on the house side, walk » carefully around on the road side, looking and listening for traffic from all directions; or cross the road using the kerb drill.
