    You will work with children, who for many different reasons are not in main stream education butstill have a need for a school, which can manage their special needs and interests. Some of thestudents are here to get more challenges in the school program. Some come with the hope, thatindividual teaching can improve their knowledge. Some have learning problems, some have somany problems at home that they are unable to concentrate on learning. Others have a need for helpto make social relations with other students or with adults. All of them need challenges and a feelingof success, an inspiration to believe that they can change their own situation.

    In the environment with such demands, there is a great need of people with personal surplus, whocan be role models for the students, create safe and cozy environment which encourages students development. You do not need to be a psychologist or trained pedagogue, you just need a big heartto be shared with the students. This is one of the main tasks for you, while you are training asDevelopment Instructor.

    The work is combined with practical studies, as you are expected to learn how to put a surplus ineach task you do, whether it is teaching mathematics or cleaning, playing sports with students, orcooking dinner. Basically the DI is a part of running the school in all of its aspects together with theleadership and staff at the school.

    Here are some of examples of what your work could include, depending on the needs of the schooland your special skills and interest:

    Being an assistant teacher in a class with students who need extra help; Working in the care home as practical help and mobilizing the students to take responsibilityand be active in their leisure time; Teaching English or German to a group of children; Making program with a student who needs to have special attention; Preparing and participating in the school trips; Teaching special subjects like theatre, painting, sports, horse riding, mechanics, etc. Creating, preparing and implementing weekend program with a group of children; Taking care of the network/computers at the school; Having a night watch at one of the Care Homes or boarding school; Doing maintenance, taking care of the outdoor areas, cleaning and cooking; Organising health campaigns;

    Driving the school bus and organising trips outside the school; Making environmental projects; Doing garden farming; Running a healthy kitchen; Running local income generating projects (for example, cafe), etc.Apart from practical tasks and pedagogical work, Development Instructors study and practicedifferent topics. In terms of studies, the period in Denmark is divided into three thematical periods.The DIs from DNYS schools meet approximately once a month at a study session where they giveeach other courses, create teambuilding activities, carry out different projects and have fun together.Each period, as in Denmark as in Africa, is finalised by an examination, for which DI prepares athorough report and certain tasks.

    Period 1Denmark - integrating and understanding the school concept3 months

    First period is about getting used to the new country, new environment, getting to know the schoolconcept, its leadership and staff, and of coursethe students. It is also about developing anunderstanding about the program, its demands and how you can live up to them. In the 1st period

    you will start to learn Danish in order to communicate better with the children and staff at theschools. You will also learn about pedagogyto get tools for creating a better environment for thestudents; you will learn about Danish welfare society and investigate some of the hottest topics, likeimmigration policy, education system, etc.

    Period 2Raising awarenessmake your stand for a cause3 months

    In the second study period Development Instructors learn about situation in the world. With the helpof courses, project work, individual studies, field visits, interviews and experiences the DI shouldgain the understanding of current problems in the world and hopefully be inspired to fight theinjustices he/she faces. In this period we work with the themes like conflicts in the world, povertyand hunger, cross-cultural understanding, climate change, global economy, etc. We will use our

    knowledge and make actions to raise awareness amongst our students and teachers but also in thecommunity and in cooperation with other people and organisations, for example, inviting a group ofrefugees for sport activities in the school, performing theater play about Afghanistan, participatingin Climate Change demonstration.

    Period 3Africa - prepare for your project in Africa6 months

    The third study period is where Development Instructors more specifically prepare themselves forthe project work in Africa. The DI will learn more about different development strategies, Africanhistory and current situation, different Humana projects in general and in more details about the

    project where he/she will go, HIV/AIDS and other diseases, intensive language studies (if DI goesto Portuguese speaking country).

    The Development Instructor Program is part of Humana People to People projects. During 30 years morethan 10000 Development Instructors participated in the development of Humana projects. Humana takes avery clear stand in the fight against poverty and is in many ways a controversial organization, constantlytrying out new ways to develop and expand the programs to improve the conditions together with the poorestpeople in this world. Therefore you should not be surprised, when you run into sites and organizations, whodo not recommend this program. In the fight against poverty it is difficult to stay friends with all parties.What counts is the result and the recommendations from the many International Partners in Development andfirst of all from the many people involved in the Humana People to People Programs in the 3rd world. Readfor yourself at www.humana.org and research the alert sites as well, participate in a meeting and take yourown stand.
