105E’s new District Governor’s wife, Lion Lucia Green, in keeping with the long standing tradition, is launchingher DG’s Wife’s Appeal. She has chosen the Downs Syndrome Association to be the beneficiary.Down’s syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra chromosome in a baby’s cells. In the majority of cases Down’ssyndrome is not an inherited condition and usually occurs because of a chance happening at the time of conception. Many of us will have been involved, or had our lives affected in some way, by the difficulties faced by Downs syndromesufferers... and that is certainly the case for Lucia.Lucia has worked for 15 years at the Lake View School in Rainworth where she and DG Steve live. Soon after startingwork at the school Lucia met Sam Colledge (at that time 3 years old). She spent 5 years working with Sam (for muchof that time on a 1 to 1 basis) before Sam was moved at the age of 8 to a school more specialised in dealing with hisproblems. It was during this time that Lucia became a close friend of Sam’s family and is now Godmother to Sam’syounger sister Morgan. In addition to Lucia’s connection to Down’s syndrome Lion John Yarwood (a fellow member of the Edwinstowe andDukeries Lions Club) has a granddaughter who is also effected by Downs.Without a doubt there will be many, many more of us in 105E who can relate to the special help that these affectionatepeople need. Please... during the course of the next 12 months will you find a way to support Lucia in this very specialand worthy appeal? In each edition of Update E throughout the next year Lion Lucia will give us a review on how her appeal is progressingso please give her plenty to write about.

Lion Roger tells us that Her Majesty The Queenand the Royal Party arrived on the BuckinghamPalace steps to the sound of the National Anthem.Dressed in bright yellow and looking immaculateshe was accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh,Prince Charles and Lady Camilla. They strolled amongst those attending and during the afternoon two bands a played... one performing regimental music, the other swing and jazz. Roger found it a joy to wander around the beautiful gardens and lake. He was staggered by thetea with its variety of dainty sandwiches and cakes... ’out of this world; nothing could possibly taste better’, he said.We are in the 100th year of Lions Clubs International, the 30th Year of Blaby Lions Club and Lion Roger is about tobegin his third term as Club President... No wonder he feels it’s a fitting time, and an honour to be invited to attend aRoyal Garden party at this particular time.

Lion nominated for palace visit...Because his name was submitted by anunknown Lion Blaby & District Lions ClubSecretary Lion Roger Smith, had the honourof attending a recent Royal Garden Party atBuckingham Palace.Accompanied by Rowena Barnwell, his youngerdaughter, Lion Roger commented, ‘Such anauspicious occasion as a Royal Garden TeaParty makes me feel very proud to be British.’

Sleaford Lionesses held theirfourth annual golf day and werenot deterred by a rainy start tothe proceedings. The enthusiasm of the Lionessesshone through and that ensured that 31 teams ofgolfers had a good day.Half way house was laden with goodies to sustainthe players during their round and afterwards ameal in the club house finished the day splendidly. Most holes were sponsored and the Lionesseshad some outstanding raffle prizes. The outcomewas that they raised a record sum of over £4000.

Busy times at Sleaford...

Lion President Paul Whitworth, watched by Lionesses and fellow golfers, ignores the rain as he tees off to get the competition underway

To celebrate 40 years of Lionesses in the UK the Sleaford Lionesses joinedother clubs for a tea party.Invited guests included representatives from groups who have receivedsupport and other groups that have helped the Lionesses in their work.Helium balloons, bunting, flowers and other ruby decorations bedecked theroom to make this a special celebration of a notable anniversary. Tea wasof course taken in beautiful china (loaned from a member’s collection)The usual array of scrummy finger sandwiches (no crusts of course) wasfollowed by some wonderfully delicate cakes accompanied by a specialAnniversary Cake made and decorated just for the occasion. All of this was rounded off with all present being entertained by a singer.CONGRATULATIONS TO LIONESSES ON THEIR ACHIEVEMENT

Meanwhile... Sleaford and District Lions have been celebrating the Lions ClubsCentenary by staging a very successful Picnic in the ParkThe club thought it was an excellent way to say thank you to the people of Sleafordand surrounding area for all the support received since the Club was formed 43years ago. There were many free stalls there, including skittles, roller ball and mini golf... Therewas also the opportunity for Tile painting and Face painting... and that’s why yournow looking at the magical image (left) of Lion President Paul Whitworth.

Other stalls included Raptor Rescue (a bird ofprey rescue organisation) and LincsArk whorescue and re-home cats. The Lions’ own locally famous giant hotdogswere also available and proved very popular.Fantastic choral entertainment was providedby the William Alvey School Choir.Taking part in the fun the Mayor of Sleaford,Cllr. Jan Matheson, was more than happy totry her hand at the traditional skittles sideshow(pictured right). All in all it was a fantastic day and everyonehad a really great time... it was a splendid wayto celebrate 100 years of Lions serving theircommunities.

Matlock and Derwent Lionsconsidered they were just a little too faraway to play an active part in the 105EHumber Bridge Feed the HungryCentenary event. But not to be outdonethey staged their own event and had aresounding success.Lion Kevin Senior told Update E...‘It never fails to amaze us, how generouspeople in the Matlock area can be. After aweek of publicity, we stood at SainsburysSuper market on 3 June and shoppers,by the dozen, passed by, looked at ourdisplay, talked to us and came out with adonation to put in our shopping trolleys. No target was set but 343 tins and packetswere donated and passed on to Matlock'sJigsaw Food Bank.

David Cooke, Jigsaw Food Bank, receives the donations from Lion Colin Turnbulland President Bill Lansdowne

They collected for their own Bridge of Tins...

In the South of the District Conningsby and Tattershall Lions have been supported by the pupils of the Holy TrinityChurch of England Primary School. Here the children have a "can-do" attitude when it comes to helping others. Thechildren collected cans of food and, in keeping with their school motto “We Care We Share We Learn”, they donated themto the Lions for their ongoing programme to Feed the Hungry. On 7th June the cans, together with thousands more collected across the District, were placed on the Humber Bridge asa part of the District’s project to publicise our Feeding the Hungry initiative and to commemorate the Lions Centenary. The cans will then be distributed to Food banks and Soup kitchens. On a lovely sunny afternoon, the school council built their own "Humber Bridge" of cans in support of the Lions initiative. What a wonderful example has been set by these children of Holy Trinity School... We are indeed grateful for their hard work.

Scunthorpe Lions were honouredby the presence of Baroness Redfernof the Isle of Axholme as she joined105E DG Lion Balvinder Sokhi toofficiallly open a Lions CentenaryGarden in the town. The garden has been built by theScunthorpe Lions in collaborationwith the North Lincolnshire Council. It is a fitting way to mark theCentenary of Lions International andthe Scunthorpe members believe itwill stand for many years, not just asa tribute to Lions but also asrecognition of the support given bythe local community.

The Lions Garden sits in a prominent area onone of the town’s busiest approaches and isalready looking splendid as the plants andtrees begin to flourish. In keeping with LionsClubs’association with sight impaired thegarden has a number of sensory plants. These are set around an attractive seat (inLions colours of blue and yellow). Throughthe emission of scents the plants will bringenjoyment to those who have restricted sight.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! From the bottom of my heart. A relieved Lion Elaine Kitchen (left) wanted this message to be passed on to everyone who helped in any way to make the Humber Bridge Feed The Hungry project such an outstanding success. And what an absolutely wonderful day Wednesday 7 June 2017 was. The day on which wewere able to commemorate the birth of Lions Clubs International... A day when we celebrated100 years fo Lions Service... A day on which that service continued. Around 25,500 tins werecollected, placed in a continuous line across the span of the Humber Bridge and laterdistributed to homeless and needy people across the Lions Districts 105C and 105E.

Bridging The Humber.... Districts 105E and 105C join together to make it happen

Lion Elaine commented, ‘This is the first time, in almost 20 years that I have been in Lions, that I ‘ve seen so many Clubscome together to support an event. I’m not going to name all of the Clubs, I would hate to miss one out, but some Lionscame from Boston, Edwinstowe, Sleaford, Nottingham, Coningsby and Tattershall, Retford, to name a few. Virtually allthe Clubs in Zones A and B came along with our own Centennial Leos. Many more Clubs from right across the Districtsent money to buy tins... everything was gratefully received.’

From 8am a steady flow of Lions started to arrive to help withlaying the food tins. Lions from 105C on the North Bank andfrom 105E on the South bank worked simultaneously to laya line of tins between the suspension pillars of the bridge.Earlier calculations indicated that 20,500 tins were neededto complete the task and it would take close to 10 hours. Onthe day over over 25,000 food tins were obtained (via thecontributions of tins from many Clubs and with £1,700 sentto buy tins. The number of Lions that turned out to help wasfantastic enabling the job to be completed by 3pm... almost3 hours ahead of schedule. A brilliant effort by all concerned.Barton upon Humber Lions provided a welcome soup kitchenin the early evening which everyone enjoyed. Tesco in Bartonhad donated 150 bottles of water and soup. They had alsoput the £1,700 worth of food tins into trays and provideddollies to wheel them onto the bridge. Tesco in Hull providedvehicles to move the tins and a group of helpers came fromboth Tesco branches. They were so impressed with the Lionsthat they now want to form a partnership with us.

Pictures (from top) Stacking and counting tins ready for transfer onto the bridge: Welcome refreshments were served to Lions from across the District by Barton Lions Club; Pip was one of a number of Tesco staff who provided amazing support : Sorting the trays of tins on dollies ready for moving onto the main bridge span.

A number of local businesses willingly gave amazing support includingTesco in Barton, Hull and Scunthorpe, Vending Enterprises, Co-op,Humber Bridge Board, Fareshare, PPS Containers (Grimsby), and JohnReid Haulage. Cleethorpes Sea Scouts, the Brigg Rainbows, Browniesand Guides, Winterton Academy and Winterton Guides, also helpedon the day. Over 1,000 tins were collected by a group of primary schoolsin North East Lincolnshire...It was a good day for giving everyone a chance to meet Lions form aneighbouring District - and exhilarating too as many of the impromptu105E / 105C get togethers took place in the middle of the bridge on theon a wind swept walkway. When all the tins were laid on the bridge District Governor Balvinderand Rashpal came to open the Bridge at 6pm. Accompanied by a smallarmy of Lions they walked to the centre of the bridge to meet 105CDistrict Governor Lion David McDowell.

Crossing back to the South Bank the 105E contingencyheld a short ceremony with a minutes silence and thelighting of lanterns in memory of all the Lions who haveserved our great organisation. The food was taken away by Fareshare to theircollection centre in Hull to be distributed to foodkitchens, food banks, hospices, salvation army andmany more venues north and south of the river.A mammoth task achieved brilliantly by all concerned!

During my time as a Zone Chairman I heard various comments about Message in a Wallet from people who thought thatthe Emergency Services would not look in a wallet or purse for information... I hope the following will change people’sviews. When Chesterfield Neighbourhood Watch were collectin a fresh consignment of Message in Bottle I showed them theMessage in a Wallet. They were so impressed that in the last six months the Club has provided them with 1,500 Walletsand they say that the Police think they are the best thing they have seen and are now recommending them to as manypeople as possible.
