DETAILED ANALYSIS FOR “W-BAND”INTRODUCTION

The serious situation about drowning in NZ drew the attention of the public, whether our safety in water is 100% guaranteed and whether the lifeguards have the abilities to save us

1

1

immediately when we are facing life-threatening situations became concerns. In order to keep Kiwis’ safety but not affect them have fun in water, we generated a product named “W-Band” (W could stands for Water, Wristlet, KiWis & Well) which is a anti-drowning wristlet with sensor and GPS to help solve this problem.

3. BUSINESS SECTION

3.1 Vision

We Kiwis love our water but our safety can not be 100% guaranteed, we hope the lifeguards can come to us at the first moment if we are in danger; we want kiwis to be able to PLAY HARD but STAY ALIVE.

3.2 Industry Analysis: Water Safety Equipment Industry

Industry: Water Safety Equipments Industry. Water Safety Equipment Industry is the industry which is focus on producing and marketing the equipments used to protect people from drowning and save people’s lives.

Force: High/Low: Justification:

Buyer power: Low There are lots of water-proofed anti-lost wristband in the market but no anti-drowning wristlet can be found. So customers do not have many choices when they want to get some water safety equipment like anti-drowning wristband to ensure their safety (Alibaba,n.d.).

Supplier power: Low A considerable number of suppliers all over the world can be chosen to get the raw materials used in the production, and more suppliers are coming up to compete with each other. So they do not have strong power to affect the purchasing decisions (EC 21, n.d.).

Threat of new entrants: High It is not very diffcult for other people who are interested in this market to entry the market and make similar products based on today’s technology level. Nowadays, more companies are

2

working on generation and development of similar wristbands (Slate, 2013).

Threat of substitutes: Low Although many rescue equipments are availble in the market to be purchased, there is no similar products which are having the same functions with anti-drowning wristband – which means bascially nothing can replace it (Watersafety, n.d.).

Rivalry among existing competitors:

Low Some different tpyes of lifebands are already existing, but they are using for data collection and summary during sports, not for safety purpose. So there is actually no other players in this indusrty , the competition is not fierce at all (The Verge,2014).

Overall attractiveness of the industry: Based on the above analysis, the water safety equipment industry is relatively attractive because the needs of water safety equipment, especially something like anti-drowning wristbands, is far huger than the prediction and the competitive advantages can be maintained for a relatively long period of time.

3.3 Customers and Their Needs

Our target customers that have needs of ”W-Band” are those parents who usually take their children to the rivers or beaches and people who do not have good swimming skills (Pool-Angel, n.d.). The reason why they are willing to pay for “W-Band” would be they have strong desires to enjoy the water but they do not wish to see the dangerous emergencies happen. So they hope their safety can be guaranteed through purchasing and using “W-Band”.

3.4 The Product and Service

“W-Band” is a wristband with GPS and sensor which can monitor whether the user is drowning by testing the depth of water and the oxygen level in blood. If the user of “W-Band” is getting drowning, the sensor can test that the oxygen level in blood is dropping and the user is going deeper under water, and then “W-Band” will send the signal and the accurate location of users to the lifeguards to inform them come for rescue immediately.

3.5 Suppliers and Partners

Our main suppliers could be SHENZHEN ZHONGDING SILICONE GEL CO.LTD which provides the raw material silicone bracelet and SHANGHAI SUNNY INSTRUMENT CO. LTD which mainly supplies water pressure sensors. Both of the silicone bracelets and the water pressure sensors are important parts of the assmbly of “W-Band” (EC 21, n.d.). The Rebel Sport and the organization called “Water Safety New Zealand” would be our important partners as the former is the most famous sports superstore in New Zealand and the latter is the lead organization which responsible for the water safety sector in New Zealand. The cooperation with them would be very helpful for our company to make a better distribution of “W-Band”.

3.6 Strategy: Differentiation

“W-Band” is targeting a very broad market which has a potential prospect as “W-Band” can be used by a huge population regardless of gender and ages. Moreover, more people start pay attention to the issues of drowning, the number of potential customers indicates a increasing trend. Because of the high technology used in the production of “W-Band”, the costs of “W-Band” production are relatively high compared with the production of other water safety equipments. The overall strategy is therefore Differentiation.

3.7 Value Chain Activity:

The most important value chain activity for this business is marketing and selling the products and services which is a primary activity during the value added process. The good marketing and selling strategies can deliver our vision to more customers and help “W-Band” take up more market shares. Even though the cost of “W-Band” production is relatively high, but the majority of value added to the “W-Band” is added to cover the costs during this activity.
