Kadam Program

The Kadam program focusses on the holistic development and academic advancement by providing bridge education to out of school children through the Kadam methodology. The children are imparted knowledge on different themes based on everyday life and educated on concepts that helps them gain practical as well as theoretical knowledge.

The themes followed in this quarter from July to September 2017, are:

In July, the theme was ‘How People Travel, Communicate and Work’, which focused on the means of transportation and communication. The theme also represented theoretical and practical activities on verbal as well as non-verbal communication, understanding traffic rules, cost of different fuels, and proper use of languages. The activities conducted during the theme period revolved around understanding different ways of communication like phones, letters, emails, along with their importance in daily life, modes of travel and drawing pictures of busses, cars, ships, planes, etc. The children enjoyed the activities and presented the pictures during monthly parent’s day.

‘Healthy Body and Healthy Habits’, this was the theme followed in the month of August with an aim to promote healthy living and inform the children about the importance of maintaining good hygiene. The children were educated about personal grooming and were

advised to include physical activities as a part of their everyday life in order to remain healthy and fit. The children were instructed to wash their hands regularly especially before meals and after using the toilet to prevent infections and the spread of germs. Furthermore, the benefits of nutritional food and a balanced diet for healthy living were explained and the students were urged to consciously follow these habits in their daily lives.

In the month of September, the theme was ‘Math in Everyday Life’ with a focus to educate the children and get them acquainted with basic mathematical calculations and their use in day to day activities. Practical demonstrations helped the children get accustomed to basic addition, subtraction and multiplication functions. Games and activities based around simple mathematical calculations were conducted for better retention of the subject matter. The children were also taught to read time on a clock. The children fashioned clothes out of paper plates and presented their learnings to the class. Concepts of length and weight were also taught and the children’s heights were measured in the class and noted on the board. Activities based on measuring the height and distance between different objects were conducted to make the children understand the concepts better.

Mainstreaming

Out of the 160 children at the Kadam Center in the last quarter, the project succeeded in mainstreaming 51 children in formal schools in Ghaziabad that included 25 children in Government School and 26 children in Private School. Out of the remaining 109 children, 15 were inactive and 7 dropped out, making a total of 87 children. Hence, the project enrolled 35 children in this quarter. Though these children have been mainstreamed, the project is taking precautions to avert any cases of drop outs. Therefore, the project conducted monthly follow-up meetings with parents and school officials to ascertain any problems faced by the children with respect to school or curriculum and to provide a hand-holding support to the newly enrolled children.

With an aim to enhance school enrollment ratio, retention, attendance and simultaneously improving the nutritional level of the children, the project initiated to organize a nutritious snack program. Ultra International Pvt. Ltd. has supporting the project for this cause. The project served nutritious and free of cost fruits, juice and biscuits to Kadam children. The prime focus is on providing seasonal fruits as fruits are absent from their daily diets at home.

Mid-day Meal

In the reporting period, the project organized 6 life skill education sessions at respective centers. The Kadam teachers taught children team work through group activities. Children were organized in groups, cartons and trash were provided to them. They prepared decorative items using waste materials. They were also taught polite words, table manners, punctuality and healthy eating habits. With every session, children improved and were able to exhibit their talent through activities such as group discussion, art and craft, role plays etc.

The project organized 6 cleaning actions, during the reporting quarter in Karkar and Maharajpur centers, with an aim to generate awareness amongst the children on sanitation. The project staff oriented them to be persistent about maintaining their premises clean for a healthy body. The children along with the project staff cleaned the classroom and the center premises.

Involvement of parents in children’s academics play a major role in their learning progress. The project understands the need and importance of Parent Teacher Meeting (PTM). Hence, 6 PTMs were organized in the reporting period in Karkar and Maharajpur centers where parents of Kadam children were oriented about the theme-based activities and how Kadam children performed in these 3 months. During the meetings, the parents saw drawings, posters and models prepared by Kadam children during theme weeks.

6 slum development meetings were organized with an aim to sensitize people on the importance of education, seasonal diseases, health and hygiene. During these meetings, community members were made aware of various local issues like the importance of education, right to education and other issues like health, hygiene, seasonal diseases etc. Moreover, the project staff encouraged the community members to adapt and encourage their children to practice clean habits in their daily life to prevent the spread of infections. They were informed to take bath and brush every day, trim nails regularly, wear clean clothes, etc. They also insisted parents to follow-up with their child’s academics and send them regularly to the center. Community members also approached the project staff to know more about the Skill Development Program that is being implemented with the support of Ultra International Pvt. Ltd. The project staff briefed them about the program and how it can be a livelihood opportunity for women.

The doctors examined 30 children from Karkar and Maharajpur center and 94 people from the community. Common issues reported by the doctor were cavity, tooth decay, and tooth infection. Doctors advised children and community members to take care of their oral hygiene and brush regularly. Hospital also gave free toothbrush and toothpastes to all the participants.

In the reporting quarter, a training session was organized on 26th September at HPPI’s Head Office for the teachers to orient them about the new components of the program and to make them aware about project objectives. The training was based on the Kadam methodology through which the children will be prepared to be mainstreamed in the formal schools. The POF strategy was also introduced to the teachers.

The Kadam methodology is a 10 step program, especially designed to cater the educational and learning needs of children. The methodology is based on the themes that revolve around cognitive, motor and sensory development of the child. There are various tasks and activities in each theme, which is carried out on the monthly basis. Through these themes, the children are equipped with basic knowledge, which prepares them to understand and follow the formal school education.

The teachers were explained about the methodology by the Project Leader. The complete process and tools of the Kadam methodology that includes various activities were explained to the staff. They were oriented about the teachers’ manual, cross book, theme book, students’ workbook and baseline/midline assessments. The teachers were well versed with the methodology after the training.

The project organized 6 project and teacher council meetings during the reporting period. These meetings were held on monthly basis for better implementation of the activities. Through these meetings, the project staff discussed about weekly and overall monthly planning of activities and achievements. In addition, the project leader explained to staff about documentation, maintaining reports and records. The teachers also shared the progress of children, and their teaching plans to focus on weak children. Through the meeting, the responsibilities were divided among the project staff and teachers, so that each teacher is responsible for accountability of their duties. The teachers were regularly updated on the methodology and teaching strategies, during these meetings. The project council also discussed about regular follow-up of children, which is a necessary step to track their progress and retain attendance at the centre.

The project has been successful in implementing the project activities since its inception. However, there were a few challenges that hindered the implementation.

The project operational area is a hub of migrants, this caused migration of children in the reporting period. Migration is beyond the project staff’s control. Hence, to overcome this challenge the project enrolled new children. The teachers had to repeat the themes for the new children which affected the interest of other children. Another challenge the project faced was getting permission from the government school to implement a Kadam Center in the school premises. Due to lack of space, the school declined to accommodate the Kadam children. With new space for the center, the project now has sufficient space for all the Kadam children.

Annexure 1: Case Story

My name is Muskaan and I am 9 years old. My father’s name is Late Bhola Shah and my mother’s name is Manju. My family hails from Chenpur Village in the state of Uttar Pradesh. After my father’s demise, the entire responsibility of the family fell on my mother’s shoulder. My mother works in a factory in Karkar. Due to financial constraints, I could never attend school though I always wished to go to school just like my friends. But I knew my mother could not afford school fee and it would be a burden on her.

One day, I saw my neighbors going to school but they were dressed in casual wear. I was inquisitive to know where they went, so I went and asked one of my neighbor who explained to me about the Kadam Center. I was amazed to know about the free of cost education, which is a boon for people like me. I shared about the Kadam Program with my mother, who was reluctant to enroll me as she could not believe that an organization would provide free of cost education. She visited the Kadam Center, inquired about the program and interacted with the project staff.

I was excited to enrol into the center. Now, I don’t feel I am lagging behind school going children. Studying at center is far more interesting than school, teachers teach us through activities. We learn by doing, which is a great method for us to learn and become conversant about different things.

I am in 7 Step at the Kadam Center which is equal to 4th grade of schools. I participate in every competition. Our center had organized Sports Day wherein I participated in race. I also took part in Independence Day Celebration on 15th August where I sang a song and was appreciated by the audience. Likewise, I participate in every activity. I am able to read thoroughly and after 3 months, I will be enrolled into regular school.
