The Trinity Boston Foundation is committed to changing the odds for Boston youth.

We are in the business of improving outcomes for youth, from reducing violence and incarceration to increasing rates of high school graduation, college access and success.

To that end, we run direct service programs; work to improve community health, cohesion and coordination of resources; and look to build the public will to create long-term, systemic change.

Our programs inspire, empower and affirm youth and families. We work from the inside out, focusing first on values, character and self-esteem, mental and physical health. We then provide the academic supports and leadership training that help young people realize their full potential.

Everything we do is grounded in relationships and the creation of community. These relationships in turn form a web that connects people and communities across Boston, a web that makes big change possible.

The Odds in Boston

Only 63% of Boston Public School students graduate from high school.

Only 28% of non-exam school graduates enrolled in college had obtained a degree six years later (Class of 2003) .

48% of Boston Public High School students have had a family member or friend murdered.

65% of Boston’s youth report witnessing one or more acts of violence in the past year.

28% of Boston’s youth report being assaulted in the past year.

More than 1 in 4 urban Boston 4th graders have been afraid to play outside or have been made to stay inside because of gang or drug activities in their neighborhoods.

Bostonians for Youth - Collaborating to Change the Odds

Every year, Trinity Boston Foundation partners with two other organizations dedicated to improving outcomes for Boston youth. This annual partnership dinner – Bostonians for Youth – has three goals: 1) raising money to support the programs of all three non-profits, 2) increasing collaboration and coordination within the non-profit sector and 3) increasing public appetite and will for systemic change.

In recent years, Bostonians for Youth has focused on the issue of youth violence. We believe that the three major contributors to violence are untreated trauma, educational failure and lack of economic opportunity. Each dinner focuses on one of these three issues. The 2010 theme was education, with partners Roxbury Presbyterian Social Impact Center and Families United for Educational Leadership (FUEL). In 2011 we partnered with Justice Resource Institute and Louis D. Brown Peace Institute and highlighted the issue of untreated trauma.

Liz Brunner, co-anchor at WCVB-TV news, emceed the April 2011 dinner, which included two youth performances: dance troupe Thee Slap Bracelets and Trinity chorister, Ryan Williams. Governor Deval Patrick and Robert Lewis, Jr. of The Boston Foundation each remarked about both the need for and the possibility of ending youth violence. As in years past, filmmaker Topper Carew created a new film for the dinner, this one entitled “Trauma.”

Since it began in 2008, Bostonians for Youth has raised nearly $1 million to address youth violence and create better outcomes for youth in Boston.

Trinity Excellence for Education Partners (TEEP)

Founded in 2000, TEEP is a year-round character and leadership development program for Boston Public School students in grades 7-12. All students begin as rising 7th graders, with the goal of continuing in the program through high school graduation. TEEP offers year-round academic support, mentoring, leadership development, and a four-year high school Road Map to College program, in addition to summer school and summer camp. TEEP currently serves 130 urban youth and their families.

LONG-TERM, HOLISTIC SUPPORT

My journey at TEEP started the summer when I was entering 7th grade. I was introduced to it by my oldest sister, Mayra, the first person in our family to go to college. She is one of the original TEEPers. I entered TEEP as one of the smallest and youngest students so I was shy. There’s a good set of values at TEEP though. People are respectful and responsible, so I decided to come back for the summer going into my 8th grade year. Every summer in high school, I’ve been coming back to help the younger counselors recognize the importance of these values and not take them for granted. TEEP’s Roadmap to College kept me accountable for my grades and for completing the Common Application for college. Samuel, Chris and Oakes took me on college visits, broadened my horizons, and helped me in any way possible. I got into all my colleges: Roger Williams University, Assumption College, New England College, and U Mass Lowell. This fall, I will begin studying engineering at U Mass Lowell. TEEP made me the person I am today. Leadership training got me out of my comfort zone. Now I am comfortable speaking in front of people. As a varsity baseball player, I had the confidence, as well as the athletic skill, to coach junior varsity players. What I learned at TEEP, I transferred to another life situation. For my sisters and me, TEEP has been a family thing that changed our lives!

Root Cause selects TEEP as Top College Access Program

In September 2010, TEEP was selected by Cambridge-based Root Cause as one of the top seven college access programs in Massachusetts. Root Cause’s Social Impact Research Group (SIR) analyzes and distributes information on social issues and recommends high performing nonprofits to help donors make informed philanthropic decisions. Their report concluded:

“TEEP employs a high-engagement model, with the belief that investment over many years yields the highest impact for students. TEEP has proven outcomes: 100% of their students attend college, and program staff maintain strong connections with the students through their college careers to facilitate their success.”

SIR scored TEEP highly for the program’s extensive hands-on assistance in three key areas, academic preparation and enrichment, college knowledge and aspirations, and financial aid and planning.

Trinity Boston Counseling Center

For nearly ten years, the Trinity Boston Counseling Center (TBCC) has pursued a mission to expand access to mental health care. TBCC provides individual, couples, and group psychotherapy; support groups for people facing challenges such as grief, unemployment, or divorce; consultation to community partners; and training for clinicians. Many adult clients are members, staff, or clergy at city churches or seminarians or staff at other faith-based organizations. Some clients are drawn to TBCC because at any client’s request, issues of religion and spirituality can be addressed within the psychothera-peutic process. TBCC’s licensed clinicians also receive referrals from several health insurance companies. Trinity Church clergy have designated TBCC to offer pre-marital counseling to those marrying in the Episcopal Church. Our long-term partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services (DYS) includes the Street Potential program; clinical support to two teams of DYS case managers; and individual clinical work with young people who have been committed to DYS care.

Street Potential

Street Potential is a therapeutic, arts-based, job readiness program for young men committed to the Department of Youth Services. It provides after-school activities as well as a safe, supportive community for youths ages 14-18. Through art, music, books, and field trips, participants build self-esteem and trusting relationships with peers and mentors as they work on long-term mental health, educational and vocational goals.

“Street Potential is about love. People there really care about you and try and make things

better and easier. I felt so much joy and happiness being a part of Street Potential.”

Jose, Street Potential participant

What does love look like for two young men who have experienced hard times on

Boston’s streets? Through our Street Potential Program, it can look like this: a chance

to enjoy a creative afternoon at Jamaica Pond.

I have been coming to Trinity since 2001 and three people have worked with me: Arville, Michael and now Nate. Through these people God has touched my life in more ways than I could tell. On May 11, I came to Trinity as I always do since Nate has been my helper in my spiritual-mental-emotional recovery. Today was different. I asked for a tour of the church for the first time. I believe in God, yet don’t feel the same about religion. As we toured, we got to the sanctuary where we began a session. As time approached to end, he allowed me to go to the altar. I walked on and felt an amazing presence, so I knelt down. All I could say was, “Thank you,” after the jolt of peace I received.

HEALTH: MIND. BODY. SPIRIT.

Sole Train

Sole Train is a running program for Boston youth. Sole Train participants, many of whom have never run a mile, start training with adult mentors in the spring to prepare for the annual BAA Half Marathon in the fall. The program aims to inspire urban youth to accomplish goals they never thought possible.

By emphasizing physical and mental health, Sole Train seeks to foster greater self-esteem, leadership skills and overall confidence. As the program grows, we hope to show more and more teens that when they set their minds to something, they can accomplish just about anything!

Team Trinity and the Rodman Ride for Kids

Rodman Ride for Kids is an umbrella matching-gift charity raising funds for youth-focused social service agencies that support at-risk kids in Massachusetts. This year, Team Trinity had four youth riders from TEEP’s Leadership Development Program, seven TEEP alumni college students, and about 20 adult volunteer riders.

I love Sole Train because it’s a nice, small community where everybody is welcoming and supportive. I knew training for a

Half Marathon was going to be tough, but with everybody believing in me, I believed in myself and achieved my goal! I was so proud

of myself and can’t wait to do it again this year!Quinton, TEEP participant and first-time runner

Note: Quinton’s mother was so inspired by her son, she decided to challenge herself and signed up to be a 2011 Sole Train mentor!

“The Rodman Ride was challenging, but very rewarding. It was great to be a part of

helping youth organizations and it made me feel good that I could help even though I

don’t have all the money in the world. A kind person even donated a new

awesome bike to me and I cherish it like it’s my legs! It’s so beautiful. I’m very thankful for it and hope to be able to do the same

for a kid one day.”David,

TEEP participant and first-time Rodman rider

Trinity Boston Preservation Trust supports the preservation and maintenance of Trinity’s building as a sacred space, an architectural jewel, and a civic and community resource. TEEP students call Trinity a second home and Counseling Center clients find safe haven and security in the building’s beauty. Trinity’s sanctuary serves the community as a gathering space for services, lectures, concerts and celebrations, while meeting and reception rooms host board meetings, classes, AA meetings and more for neighbors and non-profit organizations throughout the year.

Volunteers are always needed for one-time projects or long-term commitments. There are many ways to get involved, from mentoring a TEEP student to helping out in the office or ushering at a concert. Volunteers enable growth in the reach and depth of our programs and city-wide initiatives that would otherwise not be possible.

Music for All offers affordable public concerts featuring Trinity choirs and community partners that pair inspiring music with glorious architecture. In 2010, Music for All hosted a benefit concert with the Chiara String Quartet that raised over $2,000 for earthquake relief in Haiti. The Boston Cecilia Society filled Trinity Church to benefit victims of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Music for All’s most popular annual events are the Messiah Concert on the second Sunday of December and the annual Cabaret fundraiser on the last Friday of January.

TEEP has done so much to change my life that I don’t know what life would be without TEEP. I have become a leader. Not only has TEEP taught me these things, but I have also learned that the ties between friends are unbreakable; because at TEEP, I have brothers and sisters who I trust with my life. I have realized that friendship is really the key to living because it is, truly, love that makes the world go round.

Nickie, TEEP participant
