Graduation The College’s 2017 Year 12 students were sent off in fine style at our Graduation Day on Friday 17 November. Forty-three stu-dents graduated and as they, one by one, accepted their Graduation Folders from the Board Chair, Mr Steve Jones, you couldn’t help thinking there is going to be forty-three very lucky employers out there over the next year or two as these great young peo-ple move into the workforce. We were also very lucky to be able to per-suade the ABC Radio to loan us their Coun-try Hour presenter, Bridget Fitzgerald, for the day. Like a lot of our students these days, Bridget has found her way into the world of agriculture from a non-farming background. It was great to meet the per-son behind the voice. And her advice to our graduates to take opportunities when they present and just ‘give things a go’, perfectly reinforced the College’s ethos. Our Graduation Day, however, very nearly wasn’t the celebratory occasion it turned out to be. Just a week before, one of our Year 12 students, Maddie Wheatley, was involved in a serious car accident that result-ed in her being airlifted to Perth. Thankfully Maddie’s condition started to improve clos-er to the event and, while she wasn’t well

enough to attend the ceremony, we were able to take the ceremony to her in a sense via ‘facetime’. This enabled Maddie to hear the warm best wishes from the 500 people in attendance and watch her younger sister, Caitlyn, ac-cept several awards on her behalf. Maddie’s now at home and continuing her recovery. Enrolment Days Unfortunately there’s not a lot of time to sit around and reflect on the stu-dents graduating out of the College because we’re soon turning our atten-tion to the next group coming in. The College’s Enrolment Days on December 6 and 7 were very busy days; we have our largest ever intake of students for 2018: 61 students. We expect our overall student enrol-ment for 2018 to be 140 students, con-sisting of 37 Year 10’s (2 classes), 56 Year 11’s (3 classes) and 47 Year 12’s (3 classes). Even with the cohort going out to a record-breaking 140 students, nearly 50% of students who went through the enrolment process this year were not successful in gaining a place for 2018.

Staffing With the arrival of our new Head of Depart-ment – Studies, Amanda Gaunt, our teach-ing staff for 2018 is nicely settled. Amanda is a former Deputy Principal at WACoA– Morawa and will be a great addition to our team. The only member of our current teaching staff we will be losing next year is Trevlyn Smith who has taken up a position as an Agriculture teacher at the Mount Bark-er Community College. We thank Trevlyn for the great work she’s done at Denmark Ag for the past several years and wish her all the best in her new job at Mount Barker. The farm staff for 2018 is not quite as settled yet but hopefully will be by the end of the year. With Terry De Vos recently mov-ing into the Assistant Farm Manager posi-tion, we are still looking for the right person to fill his former role as the Dairy Manager. We have already run one selection process but were unable to find a suitable applicant. The position has since been readvertised with a closing date of December 15, so here’s hoping we have more success this time around and have someone ready to start early in 2018. Thanks As we approach the end of the year I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the two most important committees in the College’s organisational structure; the College Board and the Agricultural Advisory Committee. With the help of the College Board (Steve Jones, Neels Delport, Julie Marsh, Deb Per-kins, Angela Wheatley, Dane Carter and Ste-ve Swallow) we have developed a new 3-year Business Plan that provides a strong strategic direction for the College. And with the help of our Agricultural Adviso-ry Committee (Owen Sounness, Harry Car-roll, Sandy Lyon, Phillip Marshall, Murray Montgomery, Ken Ravenhill and Gary

Wilson) we have developed a comprehen-sive 5-year Farm Management Plan, that we are confident will ensure our students are being educated and trained in best industry practice farm enterprises using the latest technologies. Finally, I’d just like to wish everyone in our school community a safe, restful and enjoy-able Christmas and New Year.

PREFECTS 2018

Following a competitive nomination and voting process, College Principal, Kevin Osborne announced the successful Prefects for 2018 during the Graduation Ceremony on 17 November. Thank you to our out-going prefects for a job well done and welcome to our new group of Prefects for 2018. Mr Gary Jones will be transporting and su-pervising students during the course finish-ing at 11.00 am on Friday 16th December. Students can then be picked up by parents or return to the College with Mr Jones arriv-ing at approx. 2.00pm. If you require more information please contact the College on 98480200. Certificate III Advanced Wool Handling Over the past two weeks eight Year 11 Stu-dents completed a Certificate III Advanced Wool Handling. Students received training in wool pressing, preparing wool for classing and performance of shed duties. The course was co-ordinated by Darren Sca-hill with South Regional TAFE providing the training and assessment. Units achieved can also be used towards the Certificate III Agri-culture qualification. Start of 2018 School Year

All new Year 10, 11 and 12 students required to be at College by 12 noon on Monday January 29 2018.

Previously enrolled Residential students return after 3pm on Wednesday January 31 2018.

Previously enrolled Day students return to College at 8.00 am Thursday February 1 2018 for the start of the normal timetable. On behalf of the teaching and training staff at the WA College of Agriculture, Denmark I’d like to wish all our parents and students a happy and safe Xmas and New Year season.

As mentioned by Kevin Osborne earlier in this newsletter the Year 12 Graduation was an outstanding success and I’m sure a memorable occasion for all students, par-ents and College staff. To all graduate students congratulations and well done. It has been a great pleasure working with you over the past two years. Congratulations to all prize and scholarship winners, you are all very worthy recipients of the awards. Enrolment Days Our Enrolment Days for incoming 2018 stu-dents took place on Thursday 7th December and Friday 8th December. These are im-portant days designed to best prepare new students for the start of the 2018 school year. Students were provided with their 2018 course programme and subject options and had the opportunity to try on and purchase uniform items. It was also an important opportunity for parents and students to share information with the College so we’re as best prepared as we can be to meet the needs of incoming students. 2018 Intentions The College is still receiving expressions of interest from students hoping to enrol in 2018. While we tend not to lose many of our students before they graduate, we have had a couple of Year 11 students recently pick up apprenticeships/employment for 2018 which has created a vacancy for stu-dents on a waiting list to come into resi-dence. We also know that the personal circum-stances for students and their families can alter and bring about a change of plan and direction. All we ask is for parents to in-form us as soon as possible if their child is not intending to return to the College in 2018. That way we can offer their place to someone else on the waiting list.

Semester Two Reports Semester Two Reports will be posted and emailed out to parents in the last week of term. These reports will pro-vide details of their child’s 2017 course, OLNA and VET achievements. 2018 Learning Programme College staff have reviewed the 2017 College programme and made chang-es for next year. Course selection forms were sent out to parents/guardians at the end of last term. I understand some current and new Year 10 and 11 students are still undecided on subject selections for 2018. If parents/guardians require further information for course op-tions, pathways, University entry or VET programmes, please contact me by email or telephone. Year 10 Work Experience The majority of our Year 10 students will be completing a one-week block of school-authorised work experience at the end of Term 4 (Monday 11th to Friday 15th December). David Morrell and I are hoping to visit most students on site during the work experience week. If parents have any questions regarding this work experience pro-gramme they should contact me at the College. Rylington Park Shearing School Five College students will be involved in the Rylington Park Shearing School programmed for week 10 of Term 4. The College will now be transporting students to the Rylington Park Shear-ing School on Monday 11th December departing the College at 7.00am.

From the Deputy All we ask is for parents to inform us as soon as possible if their child is not intending to return to the College. In 2018...

Graduation As mentioned earlier in this newsletter the Year 12 Graduation was an outstanding suc-cess and I’m sure a memorable occasion for all students, families and College staff. We would sincerely like to congratulate all of the students involved. It has been a real pleasure working with you over recent years. We look forward to hearing the next chapters of your stories as you move on. Prizes and scholarship awards were present-ed by a number of dignitaries, Hon. Dr. Sally Talbot MLC (who also represented Hon. Alannah MacTiernan MLC, Minister for Re-gional Development, Agriculture & Food), Nic Brasher (Farmwest), Rick Wilson MP (Member for O’Connor), Hon. Terry Redman MLA (Member for Warren Blackwood), Dar-ren Spencer (WA Shearing Industry), How-ard Shapland (Albany Regional Commercial Horticulturists), Marie Redman (Royal Agri-cultural Society), Don Macausland (Old Col-legians Association), Robbie Nicholls (DeLaval) and Alicia Keppert (Principal Con-sultant, Agricultural Education, DOE) These were presented to worthy winners who have demonstrated outstanding efforts, progress and abilities during their time here in both the practical and/or aca-demic areas. ATAR Exams Many of our students completed external WACE examinations in Animal Production Systems, Plant Production Systems, Mathe-matics, Biology and English in early Novem-ber. The students involved and their teach-ers spent a great deal of time revising and preparing for these exams over recent weeks. Best wishes to the students involved and thank you to our ATAR teachers for your dedication and hard work over the past 12 months.

Graduation As you may be aware I will be return-ing to a teaching role in 2018 and would like to welcome our new Head of Studies to the College. Amanda Gaunt will lead the team into 2018. Amanda joins us from the WA College of Agriculture – Morawa and we look forward to another successful year at the College.

From the Head of Studies I will be returning to a teaching role in 2018 and would like to welcome our new Head of Studies...

I thank the staff and students for their warm welcome to the College and I am elated to have commenced my long awaited appointment as the Head of Studies. I am passionate about Agriculture Edu-cation, I embrace witnessing the stu-dents out on the working farm, trade training centre and in the classroom. The abundance and quality of educa-tional and vocational opportunities that are presented to them is out-standing. It was great to meet our new students and their families at the Enrolment Day and I look forward to meeting our returning students at the start of the 2018 College year.

New Head of Studies

Study Tour The annual Year 10 Study tour took place from Monday 4th to Thursday 7th of Decem-ber and I thank Mark Boynton for organising the camp. The tour was based at Camp Mornington in Harvey where students were involved in extracurricular activities of climbing, abseil-ing and raft building. Students toured the ALCOA Pinjarra mine site, refinery and reha-bilitation areas, Ha Ve Harvey Cheese Facto-ry and Bell Pasture Seeds in Boyanup. A special acknowledgement to the staff who have volunteered their time to attend the camp. 2018 National Association of Agricultural Educators Conference – Launceston Daniel Gibbins and I will be attending the annual National Association of Agricultural Educators Teachers Conference in Launces-ton next month. This event will provide us with the opportunity to collaborate and network with agricultural educators across the country and explore local primary indus-tries. And finally, as the 2017 College year draws to an end I wish all members of the College Community a relaxing, enjoyable and safe Christmas break

.

Another year has come and gone (almost) at the College. 2017 has been a pretty good year in residence. We have some great memories of our graduating Year 12’s over their three years as boarders at the College. We look forward to 2018 and a new batch of Year 10 and Year 11’s coming in to join our current Year 11’s and Year 12’s. Have fun, stay safe and remember “the best things in life are the people we love, the places we’ve been and all the memories we’ve made along the way”. Have a great Christmas and see you in the New Year. Colour Run Students once again formed a team and got their bodies moving to join the Colour Run 2017. Named the “happiest 5km on the planet” this event is a global phenomenon. Teams not only run for the fun of it...funds raised are donated to cancer research.

Thank you – Residential Staff I would like to take this opportunity to thank the residential staff who have helped make this year an enjoyable and memorable one for the students. Their role at the College is often un-derestimated; they walk a fine line between mentor and disciplinarian. Residential Supervisors are answerable to parents, each other and senior staff. To consistently make sound decisions takes experience and a level of self-belief that enables a good outcome for the student. I believe the residential team do an outstanding job at the Col-lege and deserve to be congratulated for their work. Boarding is often a complex mix of relationships and compromises. The young people who make boarding part of their life, learn life skills that help set them up for the adult world. Our staff are alongside your young people through the difficulties and the fun at the College and I thank them for their work in 2017.

Thank you – Kitchen Staff Another successful year feeding the hungry hoards. I cannot begin to figure out how you would satisfy so many palates and dietary requirements but Head Chef Kevin Ryan, Enzo, April, Rosie, Meaghan, Ray, Ben, Ruby and all the casual staff who come and help for events manage to do it effortlessly. Thank you and well done! The kitchen is always a hive of activity with smiling faces and healthy interaction be-tween staff members. The kitchen staff have catered for a number of large events this year in addition to feeding all of us day to day. The Old Collegians reunion (200), Mid-Winter Ball (150), Open Day (700), Gradua-tion (600). Thank you kitchen staff, you have to be commended on your efforts this year, we all appreciate your commitment to the College and our waistlines! Thank you – Cleaning and Laundry Staff The College is all but sparkling under the keen eye of Cleaner in Charge, Tracy Milton. Thank you and well done for taking on this role with such enthusiasm and guiding your new team who are all equally as enthusiastic to take the cleaning to a whole new level.

Cleaning up after teenagers is a hard job at the best of times but our staff have lead by example and now students are demon-strating a willingness to follow that lead (or could it be that they might end up cleaning the whole dorm if they make a mess?) prob-ably the latter, nonetheless the dorms have been much more orderly this year. Who wouldn’t want their washing and iron-ing done...Carol, Michelle and Melanie do an outstanding job for our students. Come Monday morning you often cannot see the ladies for the piles of washing, but they carry on like machines and happily get the job done. The role you have in keeping the students clothing in good condition assists with the corporate image of the College and reflects the regular and positive comments from community members regarding the presentation of the students. Thank you. REACH – Installation Over the next week or two you will receive your log on and password to activate the REACH App. It is very straight forward. If you have changed any of your contact de-tails can you please let me know so that I can update that information in REACH. I will assist any parents who require help. The REACH Student and Parent app will al-low students and parents of boarding schools using the REACH Boarding School System to access their school account to request and approve leave events, sign in and out of locations at school, view their personal calendar and manage approved hosts. Well this year is rapidly ending. The last month has been very busy on the farm for staff and students alike. First I would like to welcome Jo Angilley to our farm team. Jo has recently taken up the position of Train-ing Officer in the College Beef Enterprise. With her strong background in the beef in-dustry we look forward to seeing Jo share her skills as she trains students while also running our beef section.

We have been getting as many students through their competencies as possible. We gave the Year 11 students who are com-pleting the Cert III in Agriculture in 2018, the opportunity to stay back for the 2 weeks following graduation. This has given them the opportunity to focus on finishing their Cert II competencies so that they can max-imize their time next year to work on their Cert III. The Year 11’s were also given the opportunity to stay back an extra week to complete a Cert III in Wool Handling.

From the Assistant Farm Manager Silage making has been completed...we still have a bit of hay on the

ground and weather permitting that should be wrapped soon...

The Albany Agricultural Show was attended by staff and students and we thank Mr Skipper, Mr Swallow and Miss Angilley as well as the other farm staff for the effort that they put in to preparing and attending the show. This was once again a success.

Scott Lamont won the Junior Wool Judging Competition in the sheep sec-tion and in the beef section, the Col-lege’s Simmental Stud won Champion Euro Heifer and Champion Euro Bull.

The College was also presented with a $500 cheque from Mandalong Stud for the Square Meater steer that won the Lightweight Carcass Steer Competition at the Perth Royal Show.

Shearing has now been completed. Kevin and Amanda from AWI shearer training completed seven days of shearing training with the students.

Through this training the College’s ewes were shorn; what the students did not get through, was finished by professional shear-ers who also came in to shear the lambs.

Silage making has been completed. We had a very good run with minimal breakdowns on the machines. The cool wet weather was a challenge when we started making silage, however this turned in our favour as the ryegrasses did not mature too quickly, therefore we still cut and baled some good quality silage. We ended with just over 1000 bales. At the time of writing this we still have a bit of hay laying on the ground. Weather permitting that should be wrapped up soon.

To increase our summer feed, we have planted 6ha of sorghum. This has germinat-ed well and hopefully it can be grazed by some young stock in mid January.

Vigorous growth in the vineyard has also kept our staff and students busy. This has involved leaf plucking and pruning excess growth as well as a lot of under vine spray-ing to control kikuyu as well as the undesira-ble blackberry.

There has also been a lot of activity in the Horticulture section. An area of the section has been prepared for corn and pumpkin over the summer months and the first corn was planted two weeks ago. We hope to continue this planting week by week so that when the students come back in the new year there will be a steady supply of corn until April.

As the year wraps up I would like to thank all the Farm staff and students for the effort that they have put in for another year. As we saw at the graduation ceremony, our efforts equip many young people to enter the workforce with sound practical skills and knowledge, many of whom walked away with multiple Certificates.

Wishing everyone a safe holiday season.
