A HOUSE BULLETIN OF INSTITUTE OF NUCLEAR MEDICINE AND ALLIED SCIENCES (INMAS) Vol. 13 No. 2 Jan 2015 Dr R P Tripathi ISO 9001:2008 Dear colleagues, My Heartiest Best Wishes for a very Happy, Prosperous & Progressive New Year 2015 !! In this New Year, may God bless you and your families with all the Peace, Prosperity and Joy! As you very well know, our Institute has been addressing certain global R&D challenges related to NBC biomedical management, besides advancing in the Medical/Molecular Imaging and Neurocognitive Research for our esteemed Armed Forces. Our challenges include the development of new and improved countermeasures to biomedical hazards of radiation, as well as Advancements in Radiation Medicine and Non-Invasive Molecular Imaging for supporting Soldiers’ Health and Neurocognitive Abilities. Apart from this, we also provide extensive training in the Medical Management of CBRN Emergencies that is occasionally conducted in association with some national/international agencies. In scientific pursuits, we have been able to advance our valuable pre-clinical studies on some new radioprotective formulations and drugs. Many of our new drug formulations for NBC and LIC scenarios are approved for emergency use, and we look forward to contributing more in this area. More efforts are going on for future testing, validation and limited series production (LSP) of those radiation countermeasure drugs that have shown clinical promise and feasibility. I would also like to share that the IND (Investigational New Drugs) committee has recommended the manufacturing and marketing of 2-DG by Dr. Reddy’s Lab as an adjuvant for radiotherapy of cancer. This follows extensive basic, pre- clinical and clinical studies by INMAS that finally led to the successful ToT of this compound. I congratulate all those Scientists, Technicians and Staff who have contributed to the decades-long efforts in making this a success story from INMAS and DRDO. We are preparing to gear up our activity in XII-Five Year Plan, with our emphasis on advancing valuable scientific leads achieved during XI-Plan. In the coming year, we should be able to meet more prominent targets in our R&D endeavours, and provide the deliverables that are much sought from our prestigious laboratory. We should also put up an exemplary team effort for an integrated and cohesive output with increased accountability. Our colleagues should also work hard in reaching out to our Defence Forces and Society during any crisis condition as well as in inhospitable terrains. The recent heartening example of our national service was in Srinagar where our team offered medical and paramedical support at a very short notice following devastation by incessant floods. As you can see, we have many good reasons to rejoice the new season around the corner. Therefore, I once again wish a very Happy and Prosperous New Year 2015 to you and your families, and sincerely hope that we will also make this beginning year as successful.

ISO 9001:2008

Dear colleagues,

My Heartiest Best Wishes for a very Happy, Prosperous & Progressive New Year 2015 !!

This follows extensive basic, pre-clinical and clinical studies by INMAS that finally led to the successful ToT of this compound.

NEW FACILITIES ESTABLISHED

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Sanjay NETRA)Sanjay Netra-NETRA is a completely autonomous,

hovering Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). It has

advanced features that allow the vehicle to be flown

with minimal intervention, thus enabling the user to

concentrate on the mission objective and surveillance of

an area rather than on operating the vehicle.

Its quick deployment time and Vertical Take-off and

Landing (VTOL) abilities enable it to be used in wide

range of missions. It is deal for short range missions and

in confined areas. It is designed to be particularly useful

for anti-terrorist operations, counter-insurgency

operation in forest areas, managing hostage situations,

monitoring border infiltration, local law enforcement

operations, search and rescue operations, disaster

management, aerial photography and many more

situations where it is safer to send a UAV rather than

human lives. You can get a complete picture before

initiating any action. This aspect of NETRA helps to

improve preparations for any operations that involve

direct risk to human lives. It is a great cost effective

option compared to conventional ways of having eyes in

the sky. UAV is currently being used in CBRN Emergency

Management Training Courses.

Mobile Whole Body Counter (Divya Drishti)In case of radiological and nuclear accidents some

radionuclides are released in the environment and the

environment is contaminated for an extended period of

time due to long half life of some radionuclides such as

Cs-137 (T1/2 = 30y). Gamma ray spectrometer played an

essential role in detecting the internal contamination in

the accident of Chernobyl. It was used as a monitor for

quick detection of the internal contamination and made

a classification of individuals according to the internal

contamination after three months of the Chernobyl

accident. Most widely released radionuclides in the soil

were Ce-144, Ce-141, Ru-103, Ru-106, Cs-134, Cs-137,

Zr-95, Nb-95. In order to make a decision for intervention

or investigation action in case of rising the background

due to radiological accident, we have to give a short brief

about the dose limit, intervention level, investigation

level and registration level. Such assessment requires

deployment Mobile Whole Body Counter in the field

itself. Terrorists are graduating fast towards CBRN

terrorism. Since our Armed Forces are constantly

engaged in anti-terrorism (internal Security) duties

especially in J&K, NE and Maoist affected area, chances

of use of Radiation Dispersal Device (RDD) on any Army

Installations by the terrorists are high. In order to keep

the soldier fighting fit in the event of use of RDD by any

terrorist outfit, each affected soldier will be required to

be screened for Radioactive Contamination so as to

control the panic in the Unit and for triage and

monitoring of the therapeutic response.

High Resolution Sector Field Inductive

Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer

(HR‐SF‐ICP‐MS)

High Resolution Sector Field Inductive Coupled Plasma

Mass Spectrometer (HR-SF-ICP-MS) has been procured

under the project “Establishment of Radiochemical

Analytical Facility” of XIth five year programme of

INMAS. For operating this equipment a class clean room

has also been established at whole body counter

building. This equipment is basically meant for low level

ppt to ppq elemental estimation. It is capable of Rapid

multi-element quantitative analysis (can analyze 82

elements). Pu and Ra can only be analyzed using this

equipment. The process is underway to make

Radiochemical Analysis Facility functional.

Innovative Priority OPD for DRDO staff and

VIPsThe consultants at thyroid OPD being managed by

Clinical and Allied Operations Management group was

facing a very peculiar problem. DRDO staff and their

dependents, relatives etc. requiring thyroid on priority

were perceived by other patients waiting in the queue as

queue breakers. This was leading to frequent conflicts

between them, patients and thyroid consultants, who

had to spend a lot of time and energy to convince other

patients in the queue that they belong to the

organisation and due to official preoccupation, they

could be allowed on priority to get the consultation.

ISO 9001:2008

lR;eso t;rs

To overcome this problem, a separate thyroid

consultation room, located at a distance was envisaged,

for priority list patients. This required space for doctor,

attendant to assist, waiting area etc. Evidently, no

surplus space was available under such categories at

thyroid reception area. However, these requirements

were met innovatively as under consultation room,

Medical Doctor room, waiting space, attendant, etc.

23985466

Result:

1. There was a visible reduction of the crowding at the

main waiting area, due to splitting of the patients at

two areas.

2. Since then, there is not a single episode of conflict

due to allegations of someone breaking the queue

for thyroid consultation.

Turnitin is an Internet-based plagiarism-prevention service created by iParadigms. It checks the documents for

unoriginal content. The results can be used to identify similarities to existing sources or can be used in formative

assessment to help students learn how to avoid plagiarism and improve their writing. Its online database covers over

130 million articles from journals, books, periodicals, newspapers and magazines, Over 50 billion web pages crawled,

19 languages in 140 countries, etc.

Cross Check Powered by iThenticate is a re-branded version of the iThenticate service developed in partnership

with CrossRef, a community of the world's most notable scientific, technical and medical publishers. The participants

strongly recommended to purchase this product for INMAS library.

JoVE, the Journal of Visualized Experiments, is the first and only peer reviewed PubMed/Medicine indexed journal

devoted to the publication of scientific research in a video format. Since 2006, JoVE has been saving students, faculty

and their institutions time and money by providing video-articles to learn new methods. There was a long Q&A

session after the presentation.

Participants appreciated the librarian and his team's efforts for organizing such awareness programmes and stated

that the library has played an important and active role in increasing the usage of theses resources. This training

course was organized by Dr Rajeev Vij, Scientist F, INMAS.
