Welcome

By the ICCM President, Ken Dry

Welcome to the Chesford Grange Hotel for our 7th Annual ICCM Conference and Exhibition. This will be our final year at this marvellous venue and it is right and proper that we record our appreciation for the Hotel owners and staff in accommodating us admirably over the last three years. Thank you. This year we open Conference on the theme of ‘Innovation’, and with a ‘period of austerity’ fast approaching, it seems certain that we will be challenged with delivering our services to the bereaved without compromising the high levels of care, sensitivity and quiet effectiveness they have rightly grown accustomed to whilst at the same time working within significantly reduced budgets or with an increasingly challenging income

target to mitigate the same. Providing services at the same or higher quality with reduced financial resources will require not just an innovative approach to service delivery, but moreover the procurement of its constituent parts. With almost all available exhibition space fully booked and occupied I actively encourage you to visit the exhibition and the 46 suppliers who will be in attendance. I feel sure that regardless of you discovering a product, concept or service that will provide that ‘Eureka!’ moment of innovation, an existing or even new supplier may be able to work with you in an entirely different way to your mutual benefit. Whilst the answer to your proposition from your supplier may be ‘no’, at least you will have asked the question! In parallel to our exhibition we once again have a wide range of industry relevant papers and presentations given by people effectively ‘at the top’ of their game, and I am sure they can provide that much needed inspiration to achieve your professional goals and service objectives; and to support this further, there will be a number of our highly successful workshops and surgeries on matters ranging from Exclusive Rights of Burial through to the Recycling of Plastics. On a lighter note, Monday evening will see our second ICCM Mega Quiz, with prizes for the more successful teams followed by a Gala Dinner and Disco the following Tuesday evening. Both events are a perfect opportunity to meet up with old friends and acquaintances, swap stories and advice as well as develop new professional links and friendships. To maintain continued improvement on our Conference success, we want to hear your comments and suggestions. If you would like to see changes to the format of the event, or if you have ideas for papers and workshops that would be of benefit, then please let Julie Dunk, (ICCM Technical Services and Events Manager) know. Planning is already underway for next year’s event, so please make sure you fill in the feedback forms in your delegates’ packs and get them back to us. Once again a warm welcome to you all, and I hope that you will leave refreshed and invigorated for the year ahead. Ken Dry ICCM President

Promession is a new ecological way of laying our deceased to rest. The method is based on an innovative combination of tried and tested techniques that prepare the body for a natural restoration to the soil. This green burial method transforms the body into organic, odourless and hygienic remains. In conjunction with a dedicated method to separate contaminants such as mercury, Promession drastically reduces the impact on the environment in comparison with current forms of burial by improving on traditional choices. Presentation and Speaker Notes Monday 28th September Session 1 Chair – Ken Dry, ICCM President 1.30 Opening of Conference and Presidential Address, Ken Dry, ICCM President, followed by presentation of ICCM Diplomas 2.00 BCET Update on Current Initiatives, Brian Stott Update on Trust initiatives including:

the launch of their carbon footprint scheme which has the potential to reduce our impact on the environment and fixed costs.

Recent “Grey Water” training days will also be reviewed.

Applicants who have recently been awarded educational grants will be introduced and the progress of diploma candidates will be updated.

2.30 The Bereavement Services Portal – An Innovative Website, Stephen Laing, ASSETtrac Ltd An introduction to the new Portal, bringing together under one common web address the previous directory, the Institute professional web site and a range of channels to other related bereavement products and services, including FDs, masons, suppliers, florists, military graves. The aim is to become the UK’s largest on-line bereavement data centre with a significant increase in the 3000 daily hits. All ICCM members may continue to access and edit their own details and the rest of the Portal free of charge.

Stephen Laing Stephen spent his early career in international reinsurance for a major Lloyd’s broking house including living and travelling in the Far East. He established ASSETtrac in 1999 as founding director with his wife Sue and spends quite some time in burial grounds, schools and councils, offering paper free solutions to managing large moveable (and not so moveable!) property inventories.

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, he naturally supports the Magpies as well as being a director of his local football club. Membership of four wine clubs, country walking, and DIY contribute to a busy lifestyle. Married with three sons and living in West Sussex ASSETTRAC specialises in physical asset identification, tracking and software management. Connections to the cemetery world started early, supplying one of the first natural burial companies with an underground microchip marking system that has grown strongly to 60 public and private site operators including three Australian state burial authorities. This rather unusual business application has featured in radio, TV, and press coverage.

At the same time, the company has developed and branded software for managing members’ health and safety compliance (ICCoMply), systems for reducing the cost of recording memorial safety inspections, and marketed web browser based administration software. Based on the CBA handbook ASSETtrac also established The Bereavement Services Portal in 2004 growing to be the

15 UK’s largest on line directory of burial and cremation activities. Low cost surveys have been conducted on line for MOJ and Cameo. Now under ICCM ownership the BSP continues to be hosted and managed by the company alongside the Institute’s own website which they re-designed in 2009.

Session 2 Chair – Martin Birch, ICCM Director 3.30 Promession – Supporting Life, Susanne Wiigh-Masak, BA, Promessa Organic/Promessa Foundation The presentation will invite the audience to share the biological insights of how Nature prefers to take care of a dead body - the original plan in Nature is to allow a dead body to go back to soil from where it came. To do this today, in the best of ways, takes a lot of knowledge and understanding within the area of biology and technology, as well as experience from all aspects being considered within the burial industry. This knowledge and understanding you will find within promession as a new burial concept that was introduced in 2001. The concept of promession has been acknowledged all over the world. Promessa Foundation has given the task to Promessa Organic to choose licensees to take care of the implementation of this concept in different countries. UK has their own Promessa Licensee, a team we are happy to introduce at this conference. Promession will allow death to be a start of new life - well treated the body can be a gift back to Nature and not a disposal problem. Not only will promession be a better way for Nature, it will also improve the working practice for the operation workers within the industry in many ways. The staff working at the crematoria and in the graveyards will see a lot of benefits for their daily life. Promessa will also contribute as a massive improvement in connection with the need for mercury abatement. Cemeteries will notice that Promession will help with space saving capability, and the non critical reuse of graves, especially family graves. Promession goes well together with existing traditions, and makes woodland burial properly environmentally friendly - promession goes one step further and supports the real soil production due to the fact that the body is prepared for this. A full sized body can never produce soil, that is a biological fact, and here the natural burial grounds could find a very good improvement together with their good attempt to meet the need expressed by many, to meet a more natural end in relation to death and dying. 4.00 Cryomation, Richard Maclean, Business Development Director, Cryomation Ltd A presentation on the cryomation process.

Richard Maclean Over 20 years of corporate business development experience focusing specifically on the business development and ´productising´ of new technologies delivering them into new markets both in the UK and Europe.

Joined the company in April 2009 as an investor and Director of Business Development.

Born: Bellshill Scotland 27th September 1967

4.30 Debate on alternatives to burial and cremation Your chance to question the speakers on Promession and Cryomation, and to debate how alternatives to traditional burial and cremation may affect bereavement services into the future.

5.15 ICCM Annual General Meeting Tuesday 29th September Session 3 Chair – Brian Stott, Salford Diocesan Cemeteries 9.30 Problematic Funerals (Chapel Attendant or Security Staff?), Mike Grimwood, Ipswich Borough Council The one place we do not to find trouble is just before, during and after a funeral, right? Wrong !! Increased pressures and historic family problems are causing more and more incidents to occur placing our own staff and that of Funeral Directors at risk. This paper highlights some actual incidents, advises on one direction for consideration and throws open an opportunity for discussion amongst the audience

Mike Grimwood Mike Grimwood joined Ipswich Borough Council in 1983 (aged 8 !!!) within the Environmental Health Department working within, and ultimately managing, pest control, animal welfare and gypsy site services. Following a return to education his career path led him to Bereavement Services, Town Centre Market Management, Licensing and Enforcement and more recently he project managed the General and Local Election for his Borough Council. He currently represents the LGA on burial issues at meetings held at the Home Office, Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Defence alongside the likes of the ICCM etc and provides the LGA with advice on ad hoc issues between formal meetings. Ipswich born and bred and very proud of it he supports, with their other supporter, Ipswich Town Football Club following their highs, but mainly lows, for many years. He is a proud father of two sons who he is convinced will both play for England in the next World Cup !!!

10.00 Nothing to Fear.......Everything to Gain, Richard Evans BSc (Hons), Westerleigh Group An overview of the growth of privately owned crematoria with a particular examination of the wave of recent partnerships formed between companies and local authorities. This type of arrangement can offer a number of advantages to stake holders. It should, at the very least, lead to substantial investment in the facilities but it should also ensure that managers and staff are able to run the service within a much more liberated environment, free from some of the restrictions inherent within local government. Specialist cemetery and crematoria companies can also provide better opportunities for dedicated managers to progress into senior roles where their experience and expertise can be used to full effect.

Page 17: Innovation - iccm-uk.com and... · transfer of grave ownership, ... Visual company, ... BlueAV and Martin Birch for producing the Mega Quiz

17 At the same time genuine fears exist about the ‘privatisation’ of this most sensitive service and the impact on staff, families and long term protection of the bereaved. This paper aims to prove that the transfer of services from public to private should not be feared and instead could be the catalyst for the renewal of cemetery and crematoria services across the country.

Richard Evans Richard was appointed Managing Director of Westerleigh Group in October 2003 following their acquisition of Cemetery Management Ltd. He had previously worked for CML for nine years managing New Southgate cemetery and crematorium and overseeing the contract with the City of Westminster for the operation of their three cemeteries.

Since joining Westerleigh the company has opened five new crematoria, including Forest Park built in conjunction with the London Borough of Redbridge, and successfully tendered for the management of the cemeteries and crematorium service from Torbay council.

The company now manages 14 crematoria as well as a similar number of cemeteries and is a major partner to local authorities across the country.

Richard is past chairman of the Association of Private Crematoria and Cemeteries (APCC) and a supporter of the ICCM and FBCA.

He was educated at Bristol University and gained a 2.1 in Economics and Economic History.

Session 4 Chair – Charles Howlett, Chilterns Crematorium 11.00 Alignments to Mecca, Martin Rickman BSc MRICS FRGS Are your Muslim burial areas correctly aligned to Mecca? Martin is a Chartered Land Surveyor with 37 years of experience in surveying and mapping, including six years working in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia (near Mecca), and Oman. He will review the traditional method of alignment by magnetic compass bearing; and also look into the new technology now available using GPS receivers such as satellite navigation systems, personal organisers and mobile phones. Martin will also describe a third method of checking your alignments, which requires very little knowledge and virtually no equipment!

Martin Rickman Martin Rickman is a Chartered Land Surveyor, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a member of Mensa. He graduated from Plymouth in 1972 with a BSc degree in Geography, and went on to undertake the post-graduate diploma in Land Surveying at University College London. Between 1976 and 1986 he was employed on various surveying and construction projects in the Middle East, and lived and worked in the Sultanate of Oman, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Some of this work involved the recording of the as-built locations and alignments of various newly built mosques in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. In 1999 he was elected to his local Parish Council, and has held various offices including a period as chairman of their cemetery management committee. Martin is married to Janette, who is employed as the Clerk to another local Parish Council and manages their cemetery, and both Parish Councils are ICCM members. In 1993 Martin established his own Land Surveying Practice in Yaxley near Peterborough, and specialises in topographical land surveying and legal boundary issues, including writing legal reports and certifications and he has also testified in court as an expert witness in maps and plans.

18 11.30 Innovation, Choice and Standards – a view from the Natural Death Centre, John Mallatratt BSC MSc PhD For the past 19 years, the Natural Death Centre (NDC) has been at the forefront of promoting two causes. Firstly, it has been lobbying to achieve greater choice for individuals, and their families, in all matters to do with dying and death – so that they have greater control over the final stages of their life. Secondly, the NDC has been trying to encourage suppliers of any type of service used within a funeral to make options available that are as environmentally-friendly as possible. As part of its strategy for achieving its objectives, the NDC has established the Association of Natural Burial Grounds (ANBG), a body for existing, and prospective, operators who are willing to sign up to its Code of Practice. But although many things have changed for the better in the past 19 years, the NDC believes that there is still much to be done – not just in the realm of enhancing natural burial ground provision, but in practically all aspects of funeral provision. In this paper, the author shares some thoughts about how the NDC intends to progress its mission and lays down some challenges to all those involved in the funeral industry. John Mallatratt

After pursuing a career in education, fourteen years ago John took a fairly major change of direction and set up a funeral company, Peace Funerals, which aimed to provide more choice to families, and enable them to exercise greater control over the funeral arrangements of a loved one than had been possible before. The company also established two natural burial grounds, which it manages to the present day. It has won a number of awards, including that of ‘Best Funeral Directors in the UK’

About 18 months ago, John was invited to become a trustee of the charity, the Natural Death Centre and to chair its new Board. It is in this capacity that he addresses the ICCM conference.

12.00 Friends and Relations – Online Memorial Books, Jonathan Haward and Julie Pentecost Three years ago the team at Friends and Relations pioneered and launched bespoke online memorial books which have been adopted by charities and organisations large and small up and down the country. The books, which are branded to an individual Company’s livery, not only provide comfort and support to the bereaved, but also generate significant goodwill for the organisations using them, as well as potential to generate income.

20 Ageing Victorian cemeteries are in many cases seen as a financial burden on many authorities around the country. None more so than in inner city and metropolitan boroughs, yet as a designer we find that traditions are hard to change and new cemetery designs are still incorporating some of the major short comings of our Victorian past. Designers and Burial Authorities have to embrace changing precepts and concepts and take burial on into the next century. Working with communities and Funeral Directors we need to articulate the need that burial space is in many parts of the country a diminishing commodity and the sustainable burial often talked about but seldom acted on will one day be necessity. Continuing design in traditional methodologies will encumber the next generation with further liability, CDSL will therefore present a paper looking at the options for change and the barriers against it. Justin Smith

Justin Smith and his team have undertaken over 30 cemetery designs with invitations to design cemeteries in Russia, Spain and Ghana. CDSL spend at least 4 weeks a year travelling around many countries reviewing new and innovative ideas for cemetery design and management, that is reflected in their developments. Riccardo Bosisio Dr Riccardo Bosisio as a contributor to Justin’s paper, is the Director of Bosisio Antica Fonderia D’Arte a company celebrating its centenary next year. Dr Riccardo Bosisio and his Sisters Barbara and Adonella developed the Q-Box system a world leading and revolutionary burial niche system used extensively around the world. With his experience in design and manufacturing products for inner city areas and confined spaces, Dr Bosisio and his team are ideally placed at understanding the requirement for sustainable burial practice

21 10.15 Why Did We Join BRAMM?, Chris Beach, North Devon Council There is probably not a cemetery or churchyard in the land that has not been affected by unstable memorials in their burial ground. This paper looks at why there is a historic problem, what the causes are and what can be can be done to improve the situation. All information and comment is from the perspective of two officers working for operational burial authorities.

Chris Beach

After leaving school I completed a motor vehicle technician’s apprenticeship and remained working or associated within the motor industry for the next 29 years. In 2001 I made a career change and joined the Bereavement Services Team at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council as Assistant Registrar. After many years of studying I finally achieved and completed the ICCM Diploma course in 2008. The following year I was elected and served as the Chairman of the ICCM South Eastern Branch. On 1st February this year I moved to Barnstaple to take up the post of Registrar at North Devon Crematorium, a lot to do but I and am enjoying the challenge immensely. In my leisure time I enjoy hill walking, motorcycling and restoring my classic car a 1963 Daimler V8 4 door saloon.
