A GUIDE TO COTTON SEED TREATMENTS

All commercial cotton planting seed supplied by CSD is supplied as treated seed.

Treated seed provides both seed and seedling protection from a range of economically important diseases and insects, which may reduce the final establishment of cotton crops.

In 2020 the following products are available from CSD. Please confirm availability at the time orders are placed on CSD’s website.

Vibrance® Complete is a fungicide seed treatment offer jointly developed by Cotton Seed Distributors and Syngenta under the FastStart™ program which is sponsored by growers. Vibrance Complete offers growers a superior crop establishment solution which is supported by research, disease surveys and grower feedback.

Vibrance Complete combines the activity of five active ingredients to provide broad spectrum disease control that ensures that the crop receives the best start, enhancing crop establishment and yield potential. Azoxystrobin, Fludioxonil, Metalaxyl-M, Sedaxane and Acibenzolar-S-methyl are the key active ingredients in Vibrance Complete that make Vibrance Complete so potent on disease.

Apart from controlling seedling diseases such as seedling damping off caused by Pythium spp. and Rhizoctonia solani, Vibrance Complete induces the natural plant defence mechanism of cotton plants that increases the plant resistance to certain diseases such as fusarium wilt and black root rot. Vibrance Complete activates all treated plants in the field uniformly and becomes an important part of an integrated disease management program.

The significant benefits of Vibrance Complete include:

• A comprehensive disease management solution to enhance establishment

• Improved plant stands. Comprehensive trials show a 27% increase over untreated seed and 4% increase over Dynasty Complete treated seed

• Reduced risk of replant from uneven or inadequate plant stands

• Faster crop emergence

• Improved early crop development

• Enhanced early plant vigour

• Reduced disease incidence

• Improved yield potential

A GUIDE TO COTTON SEED TREATMENTS

Cruiser® from Syngenta is a second generation neonicotinoid insecticide containing 600 g/L Thiamethoxam as a flowable concentrate for seed treatment.

Thiamethoxam is highly active against soil-dwelling beetle larvae and early leaf feeding and sucking insects such as thrips and aphids.

The primary mode of action is ingestation. Target pests show symptoms 15 to 30 minutes after uptake and stop feeding. When applied as a seed treatment, a secondary crop protection benefit is obtained from contact/repellent action in the drilling zone.

Cruiser exhibits excellent crop tolerance. Numerous trials in major cotton markets indicate the following benefits;

• No delay in seed germination;

• Uniform and rapid crop emergence; and

• Strong vigour of seedlings and young plants.

Cruiser’s favourable water solubility makes it a robust product which performs well under difficult environmental conditions.

The benefits of Cruiser’s higher moisture solubility are:

• Cruiser is less dependant on soil moisture for activation (in the case of rapidly drying soil after planting or dryland cotton);

• Cruiser allows for the formation of a treatment ‘halo’ around the seed, protecting the seed against soil pests;

• Rapid uptake and translocation to all parts of the seedling;

• Complete systemic protection against pests that feed on the hypocotyl and cotyledons.

FOR MORE INFORMATION

Contact Syngenta Australia Pty Ltd on 1800 067 108 or your local Syngenta Territory Manager.

EXTREME PROTECTION

Cruiser Extreme® controls a broad range of sucking, chewing and soil-dwelling pests, including thrips, aphids and wireworms, from germination right through to stand establishment.

EXTREME CONVENIENCE

Cruiser Extreme is a convenient seed treatment. There’s no need for special equipment, calibration or refilling - and no worries about operator safety.

EXTREME PERFORMANCE

Cruiser Extreme is seven times more soluble than other neonicotinoid compounds, optimising absorption and translocation under a wide range of growing conditions.

EXTREME FLEXIBILITY

Cruiser Extreme provides maximum flexibility for your management program. It poses minimal hazard to beneficial species that do not feed on seedlings, making it ideal for use in IPM programs.

EXTREME CROP SAFETY

Cruiser Extreme is compatible with other industry standard seed treatments, such as Dynasty Complete™, to provide complete protection against disease and insect pests and reduce the risk of replanting.

SUPERIOR CONTROL OF WIREWORM AND THRIPS

TriPlus is a new premium insecticidal seed treatment developed, manufactured and tested in Australia.

It contains 3 active ingredients (thiodicarb, fipronil and imidacloprid) to give superior wireworm and thrip control in cotton from germination through to stand establishment.

Plus it offers insect resistance management by stacking 3 insecticidal groups.

Over the past five years TriPlus has been extensively trialled in all major cotton growing valleys from Hillston to Emerald, proving to be a robust product in controlling wireworm and thrips in irrigated and dryland cotton.

CONVENIENCE OF A SEED TREATMENT

TriPlus offers convenience and efficiency when planting, removing the need for a separate granular application or in-furrow spray.

Extensive trial work shows it provides comparable wireworm control to phorate (Thimet®) but without the risk of handling a dangerous good.

(Please note - damage from wireworm can still occur following the use of TriPlus or Thimet if wireworm pressure is severe enough.)

RESISTANCE MANAGEMENT

Combining three actives from three different chemical groups, TriPlus has a distinct advantage in being able to provide a pre-emptive resistance management tool to address neonicotinoid resistance which has been detected in thrips in cotton.

Benefits of using TriPlus:

• Superior wireworm and thrip control for an even plant stand.

• Efficient planting - no additional applications or risk to operator safety.

• Three actives from three different chemical groups for resistance management.

ORDER PROCEDURES

After completing a grower agreement, growers simply work with their local CSD agent to work through the requirements for their own operations.

A range of tools and information are available at www.csd.net.au to assist growers and consultants to make informed decisions.

SUMMARY

The CSD agent confirms that the grower has an effective CSD Cotton Planting Seed Agreement (grower agreement). If this is not the case, agent facilitates the completion of a grower agreement.

This process is electronic and the grower will receive a copy of grower agreement for their records.

The CSD agent then assists the grower to complete a grower seed order. This is done on a farm by farm (for growers with multiple farms) basis noting the following mandatory information:

• CSD variety and seed treatment.

• Quantity requirements (20kg bags and/or 800kg bags).

The CSD Ambassador Network Program is an initiative of the CSD Extension and Development team that aims to boost the identification, extension and adoption of crop growth and management practices which result in the more efficient production of consistent high yielding crops.

Through the program, CSD’s E&D team collaborate with growers and other industry co-operators to develop a network of commercial scale field or trial sites across each of the cotton growing regions. These sites are intensively monitored throughout the season, the crop data analysed and benchmarked, and the findings communicated to the industry.

Six seasons of data (to date) in the CSD Ambassador Network Program has enabled comparisons to be made across different districts, climatic conditions and management types. Additionally, the data set can be broken into yield performance to compare the similar characteristics of high yielding crops.

CSD have partnered with CSIRO on the Genetics x Environment x Management program, which provides further analytics of the data in the interaction of these elements using machine learning. This partnership has seen the creation of the Digital Services Initiative, which utilises the data and analytics of the CSD Ambassador Network Program to develop tools and calculators that assist Australian cotton growers and consultants in their decision-making, including:

• Simulated Time to Estimated First Flower (STEFF) - A tool to assist growers and agronomists to estimate the date of first flower.

• Biometric Agronomy for Realising Representative Yield (BARRY) - assists in the assessment of yield potential at key growth stages.

• Day Degree Calculator (DEE DEE) - a user-friendly calculator providing Base 12 and 1532 (experimental) Day Degree calculations, as well as key weather information.

• Field Research and Extension Database (FRED) - a searchable database all CSD Variety Trials since 2015, featuring interrogation options specific to season, location, variety and various management practices.

CSD AMBASSADOR NETWORK PROGRAM

Key learnings from the CSD Ambassador Network Program are extended to the Australian cotton industry through a number of publications including:

• Ambassador Advocate newsletter - provides in-season snapshots of how the crops is growing as well as comparisons and trends across previous seasons (available to CSD members).

• Ambassador Conference - held biannually, this event allows participating growers to learn from each other.

STEFF - SIMULATED TIME TO ESTIMATED FIRST FLOWER

STEFF is an experimental tool developed by CSD to assist growers and agronomists to estimate the date of first flower. The algorithm that supports the STEFF model has been developed by harnessing the power of the CSD Ambassador Network dataset, made possible due to the vast network of growers who have co-operated with this initiative which in turn benefits the whole of industry.

The algorithm and climate functions that drive STEFF have been developed by CSD and are now available for use by the whole of industry. It’s important to note that STEFF is experimental and hence subject to evaluation this season. CSD envisage that STEFF will be used to assist growers to complement the decision making process leading up to first flower and importantly, the first irrigation. First irrigation timing is critical to ensure the crop is set up to generate strong growth during the flowering period, when most yield potential is determined.

VARIETY TRIALS

Variety trial results are a culmination of the dedication, hard work and cooperation of the team of trial growers, cotton ginning companies and the CSD Extension & Development Agronomy team. It is a collective effort which continues to benefit the whole cotton industry. Access to variety trial information is evolving to offer more in depth information and can be searched by season or region.

1. The expanding list of variety trials can be filtered to improve user access to information, this can be either by season or regional level. Once filtered the desired trial information can be viewed.

2. Once the desired trial has been accessed the trial summary of results become available. This summary includes trial location, grower, cultivation type, row configuration and the yield and quality data.

3. A key advantage of the new site is access to the crop summary as well as “snapshots” of crop growth and development throughout the season.
