First records of Ant-lions from Arabia were made about 140 years ago. KLUG (1834) described 6 species from "Arabia felix" without further particulars. In the following decades numerous publica- tions with descriptions of single species from Arabia were published, most of them by NAVLS (1916, 1926, 1934). KIMMINS (1943) studied a collection of Myrmeleonidae made in Saudi Arabia by Mr. H.St. J.Philby in 1930-1934 and described 7 new species. In a paper on the Myrmeleonidae of Anterior Asia (HOLZEL 1972) I treated all records of Myrmeleonidae from Saudi Arabia known to me (all in all 31 species) and described on this occasion 4 new species from this country.

The present paper is based on the large collections of Myrmeleonidae made in Saudi Arabia by Prof. W.Biittiker in 1975-1979 and Dr. W.Wittmer and Prof. W.Biittiker in 1976, Mr. A.Pittaway in 1977-1979 and Dr. H.G.Amse1 in 1979. I am gateful to Dr. W.Wittmer (Basle), Dr. H.G.Amse1 (Karlsruhe) and Dr. P.C.Barnard (London) for the opportunity of studying this material,

I also wish to express my thanks to Dr. F. Espafiol, Museo de Zoologia, Barcelona, Dr. 0. S. Flint, U. S. National Museum Smithsonian Institution, Washington (MW), Dr. W. Forster, Zoolog. Samm- lung des Bayerischen Staates, Miinchen (MM), Dr. B.Hauser, Museum dYHistoire naturelle, Genf (MG), Dr. D.E. Biol. H.Wendt, Zoolog. Museum der Humboldt-Universitat, Berlin (MB), who enabled me to study the necessary type mate- rial deposited in their museum collections.

Most helpful in interpreting the distribution of Arabian species was the knowledge of a collection of Myrmeleonidae from Sudan, on the opposite side of the Red Sea, made by Prof. Dr. R.Remane

(Marburg) in 1961-1962. As the results of this expedition never have been published - on the other hand the material is cited in this paper very often - it seems convenient to provide data of the two essential sampling sites: Sudan-Kassala = Kassala province, Red Sea-hills, Erkowit mountains 1100-1300 my R.Remane; Sudan-Hudeiba = Northern province, Hudeiba 380 my Wustenrand- Nilufer (Akazien-Dornbuschsteppe mit eingestreutem Kulturland) R.Remane. I am grateful to my friend Dr. P.Ohm (Zool. Museum der Universitat Kiel) who most generously enabled me to examine this important material which is deposited in his collection.

Evidences of other hitherto unpublished records cited in this paper are either deposited in the named museum collections or in collection Holzel. All holotypes of new described species are - if not- explicitly stated otherwise - deposited in the collections of Naturhistorisches Museum, Basle, para- types - if available - also in collection Holzel. The terminology of the wing venation and of genital structures as used herein follows ASPOCK & al. (1980).

The photographs are the work of Mr. H . Elsasser (Institut fur Umweltwissenschaften und Natur- schutz der Usterr. Akademie der Wissenschaften, Graz). I am most grateful for his assistance.

Description of holotype: Length of fore wing 16 mm, of hind wing 14 mm, of body 17 mm. General colour yellow with obscure pale brown markings. Head with a small obscure interantennal spot and two small round spots on epicranium. Pronotum a little longer than broad with traces of three pale brown longitudinal lines, laterals extending only from the base to the median sulcus; meso- and metanotum with obscure pale brown markings which are arranged in three interrupted longitudinal stripes. Wings as in fig.35; venation pale with brown areas, membrane hyaline but nearly all cross veins fringed with pale brown; pterostigma distinct. Hind wing with 3 (left) and 2 (right) presectoral cross veins. Legs yellow, femora with pale, tibiae and tarsi with dark hairs and bristles; tibia1 spurs about as long as the basal tarsal segments. Abdomen clothed with pale silky hairs, with indistinct pale brown lines dorsally and ventrally and a few spots laterally; a pair of pleuritosquamae on segment 6 and 7; apex as in fig.1, gonarcus and parameres as in fig.2.

Figs 1-2: Myrmecaelurus parvulus n. sp. (holotype 8) : 1, apex of abdomen laterally. 2, gonarcus with parameres, laterally.

The paratypes are rather varying in size and coloration of body and wings. Length of fore wings (d) 18 mm, (9) 18-22 mm; sometimes the membrane may be considerably suffused with pale brown especially on the wing margins, in other examples the wings are nearly pale without brown shadings. The number of presectoral cross veins in hind wings varies from 2-3.

M.parvulus may easily be distinguished from all other known Myrmecaelurus species by its smaller size, the speckled membrane and the number of presectoral cross veins in hind wings.

Description of holotype: Length of fore wing 26 mm, of hind wing 23 mm, of body 29 mm. General colour yellowish with dark brown markings. Head luteous with an obscure interantennal spot, with a narrow median stripe and four rounded spots on vertex. Antennae with basal segments brownish, flagellum with pale and brown annulations. Pronotum longer than broad with three narrow longitudinal brown stripes, laterals not reaching the anterior margin; meso- and metanotum also with three dark stripes, laterals interrupted. Wings as in fig. 36; membrane hyaline, posterior margin of both wings and many cross veins in anterior wings fringed with brown; pterostigma distinct. Venation pale with brown areas; hind wings less strongly marked, with 3 (left) and 4 (right) presectoral cross veins. Legs yellowish, femora with large brown areas, hairs and bristles black; tibia1 spurs slightly longer than the basal tarsal segments. Abdomen brown, on each side of tergites 2-5 a broad longitudinal yellow stripe; pale silky hairs, particularly long on the fourth tergite; a pair of pleuritosquamae on segments 6 and 7; apex as in fig.3; gonarcus and parameres as in fig.5.

The paratypes agree in all essential details with the holotype, the intensity of wing coloration being rather variable. Length of fore wings 25-28 mm. Apex of 9 abdomen see fig.4. The species bears some resemblance to Nophis flava HOLZEL, 1972, but may be distinguished by its narrower and more heavy speckled wings.

N ~ v i i s (1912) based his description of Gepus invisus upon two examples (1 d , 1 9 ) from Egypt. Later on he considered the two syntypes as belonging to two different species and described the 9 under the name Gepus curvatus (Navbs 1914). According to the description this species differs from G. invisus in the markings of the anterior wings : distal parts of RS, base of Cua and posterior Banksian line are strongly outlined in dark brown. Some authors who in the following studied Gepus species nevertheless considered G.curvatus as a synonym of G.invisus (MORTON 1921, ESBEN-PETERSEN 1930). A few years ago I also published records of Gepus species from Anterior Asia and North Africa (HOLZEL 1968, 1969, 1972). Though I was not able to detect any differences in the 8 genital structures I continued to use the name curvatus for specimens with brown lined fore wings.

Quite recently I had the opportunity to study rather large material of Gepus species both from Anterior Asia and North Africa. O n this occasion I found that at least three species appear to have two phena: fore wings with brown stripes ("curvatus-likeJ') or fore wings without brown stripes ("invisus- likeJJ). So arises the question which of these species has Navbs named curvatus? When I checked the Navis-collections in Barcelona and Zaragoza I found there only the d from Egypt which represents undoubtedly the holotype of Gepus invisus. The 9 which Navbs described under the name G. curvatus seems to be lost. It is therefore impossible to state which of the species with striped fore wings Navis named curvatus. So I propose to consider the name Gepus curvatus Navis, 1914 as a nomen dubium.

Description of holotype: Length of fore wing 31 mm, of hind wing 28 mm, of body about 24 mm. Pale brown species with blackish markings. Head with an obscure mark between and a fine line below the antenna1 bases; vertex with two interrupted transversal brown bands. Palpi luteous, terminal segment of labial sligthly dilated and with a small brown spot on outer surface. Antennae with pale and brownish annulations. Pronotum about as long as broad, with five longitudinal brown stripes (partly interrupted), laterals extending only from the base to the median sulcus; meso- and metanotum with numerous blackish lines and spots. Wings as in fig.38; membrane hyaline, posterior margins of fore wings sligthly suffused with brown; pterostigma distinct, yellowish with three black veinlets on the proximal side; venation pale with dark brown areas; hind wings less strongly marked, with 4 presec- toral cross veins. Legs yellowish with numerous small brown dots; tibiae of two anterior pairs with brown annulations at base, middle and apex, posterior pair at apex only; tarsi pale with apices of segments brown; pale and dark hairs and spines; coxae and femora of anterior legs with prominent long white bristles. Tibia1 spurs about as long as the basal tarsal segments. Abdomen with interrupted dorsal line and rather broad waved lateral lines with short streaks within; apex as in fig. 10; gonarcus and parameres as in figs 12, 13. Apex of 9 abdomen see fig. 11.

Figs 10-13 : Gepus cunctatus n. sp. : 10, apex of abdomen, laterally (holotype 8). 11, apex of abdomen, laterally (paratype 0 ) . 12, gonarcus with parameres, dorsally. 13, same, laterally.

The paratypes are rather varying in the markings of body and wings. 1 ? from Ein Gedi has striped fore wings (brown shadings along the distal part of Rs, the base of Cua and the posterior Banksian line). Length of fore wings 26-32 mm.

Gepus cunctatus n. sp. bears considerable resemblance to G. invisus NavSs and may be disting- uished with certainty only with the help of examination of the 8 and 9 genital structures.

The absence of tibial spurs caused Navls to place this species in the genus Gymnoleon Banks, 191 1. As he did not notice that the reduction and loss of tibial spurs apparently has occured in many evolutionary lines of the family (in different tribes) he established for all "spurless" genera the tribe Gymnocemini (NAVLS 1926).

The syntypes ( ? 9 9 from Kinina and Merda in "South Arabia") seem to be lost, at least they are not deposited in the Alfieri collection (coll. MW, personal communication Dr. 0. S. Flint.) The species can be recognised with the help of the description and the figure of thorax, but above all by the absence of tibial spurs. So I hope to be right when I consider the present specimens to belong to this species which accordingly is to be placed in the genus Neuroleon Navis.

Description of holotype: Length of fore wing 33 mm, of hind wing 31 mm, of body 32 mm. General colour pale brown. Head with a brownish mark behind antennae, vertex with large brown spots. Antennae pale brown. Pronotum scarcely longer than broad with two narrow median stripes in caudal half and indistinct brownish shadings laterally; short pale hairs and long pale bristles laterally; meso- and metanotum with interrupted brown stripes laterally and brown spots on prescutum and mesoscutellum. Wings as in fig. 44 ; membrane hyaline without shadings ; venation totally pale ; pteros- tigma indistinctly brownish. Legs pale brown with black (and a few pale) hairs and bristles; spurs of anterior and median legs as long as the tarsal segments 1 +2, in posterior legs sligthly longer than the basal tarsal segments. Abdomen pale with a median dark line dorsally and indistinct dark areas laterally; apex as in fig.32, gonarcus and parameres as in figs 33, 34.

The paratypes agree in all essential details with the holotype, some specimens show an obscure interantennal spot; length of fore wings 31-36 mm. C. desertus n.sp. resembles C. remanei Holzel, 1972, from Iraq, but differs in the length of d abdomen and of tibial spurs. In C.remanei the d abdomen is distinctly longer than the wings and the tibial spurs (of anterior legs) are as long as the four basal tarsal segments together.

CONCLUSION

As far as can be judged from the hitherto examined Myrmeleonidae of Saudi Arabia the fauna of this country consists mainly of elements of the Palearctic Region. Within the 70 recorded species we find only 8 which most probably represent elements of the Ethiopian Region: Palpares papilionoides,

l? klugi, l? walkeri, Centroclisis distincta, Cueta klugi, Neuroleon pardalice, N. lugubris and N. lon-

gipennis. N o elements of the Oriental Region are known at present. If we try a preliminary zoogeographical analysis of the Palearctic species we find 27 species with

Central Eremian distribution (14 species only in Saudi Arabia - 6 of them only in the western mountain region, 13 species from Saudi Arabia and other countries of the Arabian Peninsula - 8 of them also in Northeast-Africa), 14 species with Western Eremian distribution (8 Saharo-Arabian, 6 Saharo-Iranian) and 16 species with Eastern Eremian distribution. 5 species - Cueta lineosa, Myrme-

leon hyalinus, Mesonemurus harterti, Ganguilus pallescens and Neuroleon tenellus represent appa- rently Paneremian elements, but this classification should be treated with caution: a further examina- tion of more material from other regions will most probably show that these species (or at least some of them) are represented in Saudi Arabia by more or less well distinguishable subspecies.
