OFFICIAL INTERNAL MAGAZINE OF ONESTEEL METALCENTRE • ISSUE 13, DECEMBER 2016

    Inside this issue:

  • Welcome to Issue 13, the Christmas Edition of Yes! Magazine.

Christmas is almost upon us and I am acutely aware that like me, you are probably in need of, and have earned the break more this year than any before.

2016, much like all those since the Global Financial Crisis has been a challenging year for our business, but for me it will be remembered as the year the long downward cycle of tough economic drivers bottomed and we began to find ourselves on average in a better trading environment. We are now beginning to see markets returning to growth; albeit modest. We are seeing global steel overcapacity being consumed and this in turn has begun to drive international steel prices upwards again. All of these factors mean when I look at the national Metalcentre business in total we are in a better position, I do remain very mindful that not every state, city and town is in the same position and were it remains very tough you have my utmost support and empathy.

Whilst I can never be certain of what the future holds I can assure you I am absolutely certain of one thing, this year the Metalcentre business has well and truly punched above its weight. We are now the lean, hungry business that we need to be. As a team we have battled on every front to get ourselves to a stronger position and although we remain some-way off where we need to be financially, we have had a stellar year in delivering the turnaround and building momentum toward our ultimate goals of “safe& engaged people”, “Satisfied Customers” and “Sustainable Business Returns”.

I know that Arrium being placed into Voluntary Administration in April was some of the most difficult news we are ever likely to need to cope with in our professional lives, but I am astounded how we have coped. I have been buoyed by both the resilience of our people and the support from our customers. At the beginning there were frightful nights as we grappled with what this meant for us and our company, but we remained committed and focused on meeting our day to day commitments. Despite the adversity there were numerous stories of people going above and beyond to keep the doors open and the trucks going out. I feel we learnt a lot during this period, especially what is truly important to our business and our customers, and in

an unexpected way it has made us a closer and more focussed team. The customers that I meet constantly reinforce that they want to deal with us, and they want us to survive and prosper but they also remind me in many different ways that we can never take them for granted and we must constantly drive to get better.

I personally feel we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel on a number of fronts. Arrium is now under a Deed of Company Arrangement following the 2nd creditors meeting. We have a good business which is currently being showcased to interested parties, with the intent of having a new owner by early 2017 and as I said before we are in improving market conditions.

As I look at our specific markets, iron ore and coal prices are better leading to potential improvement in our mining segment, rural and farming is generally in good shape and the lower Australian Dollar is helping our manufacturers, however it is construction that has really begun to ramp up, particularly on the East Coast. I expect this segment to continue to remain buoyant and move toward a greater emphasis on Compliant Products, quality and a stronger sentiment towards Australian made steel. This is one of the reasons we have invested in improving our process in our capital cities, we have rolled out new technology that allows us to scan, capture and then transfer automatically to our customers the manufacturers quality information. Hence the fabricator, builder and eventual owner can be certain and confident on the origin and quality of the steel.

We have also invested in new capital and completed a number of initiatives to improve the value we provide to our customers and to better meet our promise. This has included purchasing and commissioning new long product processing equipment in NSW, QLD and Victoria, the roll out of TMS (Transport Management System), which will have a profound impact on how we manage our delivery commitments and significant investment in storage and handling capability in Melbourne and Brisbane. For the third year we again undertook our enormously successful ENDURA promotion. As a result we sold a lot more steel, our people learnt and had a lot more fun and I was delighted when one of our largest customers won the car. Equally I was also ecstatic when our Forklift Headlight Team was announced the winner of this year’s Australian Steel Institute improvement initiative award, we should be proud that a Metalcentre grown initiative

has made such a profound difference to the entire industry.

These are but a few of the many great things that have been done in our business this year but perhaps the stand-out achievement was our new record high score in safety of 215 days MTI free. This is, in anyone’s terms a world class performance. Unfortunately in recent months our safety performance has again dropped and we have again begun to take decisions which are leading to us hurting ourselves, injuries that are all too familiar and could have been avoided but result in pain and lifestyle disruption. We have to challenge ourselves to be more consistent in safety, we have great runs but then become complacent and we know the results of this could be devastating. Please never tick safety off your to do list, it is just simply never complete. Safety is a way of living, a set of behaviours and choices that you need to adopt and weave into your way of life, safety is never a task that you can complete and move on. For me I often think of safety as a light that is in your head, your choice is to turn it on, leave it on and give yourself a chance; or turn it off, stumble around in the dark and take your chances with fate. Please keep your light burning bright all the time, make that light so strong that you help others see the way and encourage them to turn on their own.

If I can reflect upon our cricketing analogy, there are many parallels between the current plight of the Australian Cricket Team and OneSteel Metalcentre’s safety performance. To be blunt, we have both “lost form” (even allowing for a recent one-day series win over NZ). Using our MTI safety analogy comparing our MTI free run to a cricket innings, we have not exceeded 31 days since our highest score of 215 came to a close on the 20th July when one of our workmates was injured. The basic skills and beliefs that earlier this year saw both OMC deliver an unprecedented MTIFR run, and that made Australia the No.1 Test nation, now appear to have deserted us. They are not gone though; we have both just lost sight of the basics.

I implore you to again “take guard” and adopt the safety behaviours and belief system to ensure that both you and your workmates return home to your families safely every day. This also extends to the holiday period. As we turn our minds to a well-earned break I again ask you to remain vigilant to the hazards that

can occur around the holiday period, including:

    • Maintaining focus in the last few days of work, especially when completing non-routine tasks

    • Road Safety, particularly Stop, Revive, Survive

    • Electrical safety and falls from heights associated with Christmas wiring

    • Excessive alcohol consumption

    • Adequate sun protection

    • Putting yourself in the ‘line of fire’

If you have joined us this year, welcome. You have come to a great team and I am sure you will enjoy our journey.

Sit back and enjoy the read, this is a super edition of YES!

Finally and again I thank you for your support and hard work over 2016. I hope you enjoy a relaxing break and return to work both healthy and recharged as we continue our journey in 2017.

    In this issue of Yes!

I always enjoy reading the many and varied articles that showcase the good work that is being done in the realms of Customer and Safety. In this edition we celebrate the national recognition of our Forklift Headlight Team; as well as welcome the return on an old friend, Merv Hughes, as he heads back to his “Metaland” roots.

We traverse the country, from Whyalla, Karratha and over to Mackay, to share initiatives being undertaken in market with our customers, particularly in the mining segment, as well as by those in our business to deliver superior customer service. We also explore opportunities to further grow your sales in the Residential Building market.

Thanks to everyone who has made a contribution to Yes! Magazine this year, and those of you who have taken the time to read them. Your contribution recognises and celebrates the many good things that our people are doing in OneSteel Metalcentre, as well as sharing learnings that can be utilised by others. Please enjoy a safe and happy break with your family and friends.

  • Simone has dived straight into this challenging

    project for Queensland

Upon consolidation onto one site at Coopers Plains in Brisbane, achieving the Customer Service Charter at times seemed daunting to say the least.

It is recognised that the improvement and ongoing success towards the desired level of customer satisfaction has been and will continue to be a unified and dedicated effort by all.

In the middle of it all, in a pivotal position Simone Godfrey – QLD Metro Customer Service Co-ordinator – diligently, patiently and with an unwavering focus on the goal of superior customer service contributed enormously to achieving not just Customer Service Charter effectiveness but improved process and communication standards across the business.

Simone was able to take her customer and sales knowledge and integrate it seamlessly with operations to provide information on customer wants and expectations.

This integration saw a deeper operational understanding of what the customer expected as Simone was able to share insight in to sales priorities and decision making.

The most notable outcome of Simone’s role has been a wider understanding of customer priorities and expectations across the whole business.

With her innate ability to see through a challenge she excelled in jumping on the front foot with communicating customer priorities and operational progress throughout the entire Queensland business.

Simone is a relatively new comer to the steel industry but took a lead role in understanding operational matters and hurdles, relaying these to Sales and then responding to customer needs or concerns when the time was appropriate.

Simone developed processes and steadily and methodically implemented them in the business with a view that through Continuous Improvement we will succeed.

A genuine Yes, We Can attitude and a more than commendable effort to an outstanding outcome. Well done Simone!!

Andrew Larkin - State Sales Manager - QLD and Brett Forster - Customer Service Manager - QLD

These awards are an initiative of the ASI National Safety Committee and recognise steel industry companies and individuals for high achievements in health and safety, innovation in equipment and process improvements.

OneSteel Metalcentre was delighted to hear the announcement that the Forklift Headlight Team, won the ASI Improvement Initiative Award!

This project began when it was found that all OneSteel Metalcentre sites operating forklifts and mobile equipment identified this equipment as one of the top 5 potential hazards.

After the team was appointed it became their task to find ways to significantly reduce this risk exposure and improve forklift operations across the business nationally.

The team, led by Jack Norris, had accumulated over 135 collective years of experience in operational excellence. They created five goals that aimed to enforce improvements forklift safety in the Metalcentre business. They are as follows:

    1. Increase the capabilities of all who are trained to use Mobile Equipment within the business and ensure these team members have the tools and training to meet a Goal Zero target for mobile equipment.

    2. Reinforcement of ‘Line of Fire’ and ‘Exclusion Zone’ principles.

    3. Clear understanding of equipment capability and Compliance Plates.

    4. Reinforce ‘Best Practice’ across OneSteel Metalcentre.

    5. Recommendations of technological advancements and aids for future reviews.

Amongst the range of improvements to procedures, training and compliance plate standardisation, the team also investigated technological enhancements including M-Fork and proximity detection. These combined improvements will make a significant difference to reducing the exposure to mobile plant hazards.

Several key actions have already been implemented within the business and some will be actioned by the Safety Council in the future, thus continuing to improve mobile equipment safety and bringing the business closer to being a World Class safety organisation.

Well done team and congratulations on your award!

The 2016 National Steel Excellence Awards were announced and presented at the Australian Steel Convention that was held in Melbourne just recently.

  • The local husband and wife took the plunge and made a decision to relocate their existing business from its former location to its new home at 275 Smith Street Naracoorte.

Along with the decision to move to a new and larger premise, they also chose to expand their offering, complementing their existing engineering service to also becoming a steel stockist and taking on the well-known branding of ‘Metaland’ through a dealership.

For such an occasion it seemed only appropriate to bring in the ‘face of Metaland’, and with the help of Barry Kelly (State Manager SA/NT), the former cricket legend, yes the main man himself, Merv Hughes was invited to make an all-star appearance!

In hearing the news that Merv would be attending the event Chris immediately thought about how he could use this event to give back to the regional community of Naracoorte.

He liaised directly with the local schools and arranged Merv to accompany him to the local primary school where he officially opened their annual sports day.

A cricket coaching clinic was also held for a very lucky selection of budding cricketers to attend, where Merv took the time to instil his many years of knowledge of the game into these students.

It was then on to the main event, the reason why Merv was in town, for official opening of Haynes Engineering Metaland.

With Merv on the BBQ flipping sausages many flocked to meet him and to grab a snag. People had the opportunity to speak to a range of industry reps who had kindly donated their time to be there. With businesses like Vater Hardware, Stramit Building Products, ARC Fences, OneSteel Reinforcing and the Nepean Group there was something to interest everyone.

The positive feedback that Chris has received from the event has been very encouraging, and he has already shown great signs of increased and new business. Chris said since entering the dealership and featuring Merv on social media their Facebook site activity has skyrocketed!

Chris has expressed his sincere gratitude to the OneSteel Metalcentre Mt Gambier team for assisting with this transition and helping him to achieve his business goals.

A big congratulations to Chris and Jayne and we look forward to hearing more about their successes in the future!

  • But we must ask ourselves, why should this just be at work?

After the Christmas and New Year break we often hear about employees or their family or friends that have been injured, sometimes seriously, on their holidays. So it is important that we take a look at some of the everyday situations that may arise and how we can prevent ourselves and the people we love getting hurt too.

So what has Exclusion Zones got to do with our home life? A LOT… especially if we think of these areas as ‘Safety Spaces’.

Driving with a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you is a very good example as this surrounding space is like an Exclusion Zone. Parking a safe distance from other vehicles or objects at the local shopping centre helps keep everyone safe.

Many of you will be having BBQ’s over the break, a great Australian family tradition, but be aware of small children’s fingers that may be tempted to reach out and touch the gas controls or the protruding meat skewers. A safety space around the BBQ will mitigate this risk.

Many children get great gifts at Christmas, but it’s worth thinking about items like water pistols or similar toys and how they can easily turn into Line of Fire objects if used inconsiderately. For adults, our holidays are sometimes used for home renovation projects. Line of Fire should be top of mind for any demolition or use of hand or power tool applications.

This past year some of our workmates have hurt their hands at work, in a couple of cases the injuries have been severe. Simple things like getting dressed, doing up buttons, cleaning teeth and tying up shoe laces have required other family member’s assistance. So be careful to Watch Your Hands in everything you do, without them life can become very difficult.

Many incidents can happen because we do not pause and do a Take 2. To practice this more we are going to put more emphasis on STOP & Think in 2017. This is especially important when we do tasks that we may not always do, like putting up Christmas lights and decorations or climbing a ladder. Simply taking a pause and asking yourself, ‘What could go wrong here?’ could help prevent the unfortunate from happening.

Lastly, Know Your Limits. This can apply in so many areas while on holidays. As Aussie families, we love our beaches – always, always, swim between the flags. Getting from place A to B will not happen any quicker if you are caught exceeding the speed limit or worse, take care to drive at the right speed and to the road conditions.

2016 has been a year like no other for OneSteel. Although a lot has changed, our safety messages that protect you have not changed, they will always be a high priority.

Take extra care over the break, relax and refresh yourselves and we will all return in 2017 to continue our safety journey together.

Paul Burnell - National Safety & Environment Manager

OneSteel Metalcentre has the 5 Safety Basics which are the absolute corner stone of our injury prevention program. As you would know the more we are aware of the safety principles at work, the fewer people will be hurt.

Because you make a difference to others

  • Yes We Can!

The OneSteel Metalcentre business has built its enviable reputation on being able to have the right stocks on the ground when customers need it. Being a network of over 50 locations, we can also leverage off each other’s stocks and ensure we are seen in the market as the leading stockist of a range of Steel products.

We particularly excel in those products we manufacture and the general Australian Steel Industry (ASI) ranges (i.e. those products made in Australia from Australian Steel). But as we all know, being a great Steel Distributor means that we need to have other ranges available which are outside of this for our customers to be successful in their businesses. Imagine if a large Fabricator wasn’t able to buy Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) Pipe from their local OneSteel Metalcentre! Their business would stop and they would not be a competitive Fabricator for long.

Now as you know, we do import a range of products that support those ASI sales – like ERW, Imported Merchant Bar, Hot Dipped Galvanized (HDG) Pipe and most recently a new range of C350/C450 Large RHS. But it has been difficult for a lot of locations to have easy access to a vast range of these products in our own network and in some cases, hard for us to keep importing because there is not enough demand in any one single location.

We have a solution... ICS – Imported Central Stock!

We are busy setting up a Central Stock of Imported products that you will be able to order from and see stock levels of in SAP. Much like your HRS or Plate Central Stock.

And it’s not that far away! We are hoping that you will be able to order material from March next year! Our Supply Chain teams have already changed some SAP settings to take advantage of this, but each location will also be able to order a truck load of material as you need it.

So just imagine you get a great order for 32M HDG Pipe and some 25XL but you don’t have enough of your own stock and the next shipment is still six weeks away! ICS will hold both these sizes in stock for just that situation!

There will be a range of ERW, HDG Pipe, Imported Merchant Bar and our own

Large RHS – all stocked in Newcastle under the new ICS Warehouse, location code 8520! OneSteel Metalcentre will hold around 1,200T of stock that you will be able to search on and see as 8520 in SAP. Several locations will switch their planning to 8520 and be able to order full packs of a mixed truck load of material to make sure their own stocks are well maintained. That means you can get a mixed truck load of ERW, HDG, MeBar and RHS rather than a truckload of each!

And if you need some unplanned material as well, the great team at OneSteel Metalcentre Newcastle will work with you to turn a load around as quickly as possible.

It’s a great addition to our offer and a great initiative the Team at OneSteel Metalcentre Newcastle are supporting to make sure our network is the best around! Location Manager, Mark Resevsky and his team are doing a fantastic job in getting this ready for us all!

So can we get easier access to a great Imported Range? Yes We Can and Yes We Did!

ICS! Look out for it early in 2017. But don’t tell anyone just yet! This could be a great competitive advantage!

David Bolzan - Procurement Manager Integration

The Iron Knob Mining Area is being prepared for the arrival of a new wash plant in early 2017, including the erection of reinforcing sourced from OneSteel Metalcentre Whyalla (pictured in background).

Whyalla contractors are benefitting from the construction of new wash plants at Arrium’s mining operations, which will see the injection of $25 million into the local economy.

Work is now well underway at the Iron Knob Mining Area in preparation for the arrival of the first of the plants early in the New Year.

These plants will enable Arrium to accelerate the processing of low-grade iron ore at both the Iron Baron and Iron Knob mining areas, with the product playing a critical part in maintaining Arrium’s current export sales volumes and grade.

Although the plants themselves are being built in Ireland by CDE due to the specialist nature of the equipment, the majority of the on-site work will be undertaken by local contracting companies. This includes the appointment of a Whyalla local – Damien Robinson – as Site Manager to work for CDE at both the Iron Knob and Iron Baron sites.

CDE and Arrium’s Major Capital Projects team have made it their priority to work with the Whyalla community on the project by utilising local services at every opportunity. This will assist the local economy through everything from electrical and mechanical work, to crane hire and earthworks.

Arrium itself will also benefit through the use of OneSteel reinforcing sourced from the Whyalla Metalcentre team.

The Iron Knob plant has already been constructed and tested in Ireland in a modular format and is now being sent in separate containers, with the first batch expected to arrive in early January 2017.

Upon arrival, the various modules will then be assembled by local contractors and tested before being commissioned in April.

This will be followed by the Iron Baron plant which is expected to be commissioned in early FY18.

The purchase of these plants was made possible by the Turnbull Government delivering on its election commitment and providing a loan for $49.2 million.

Federal Member for Grey, Rowan Ramsey, said he was pleased local contractors were involved in the ongoing work through the utilisation of the Federal Government loan to assist Arrium’s ongoing viability.

“Industry Minister, Greg Hunt, continues to perform in an absolutely first-class manner in his pursuit of a good outcome for Arrium,” he said.

“This is very welcome news adding to the profitability and saleability of Arrium just at the time when we are talking to prospective investors.”

OMC Karratha Manager Brad Ryan working with our cousins at SiC has secured not one but THREE large reinforcing projects.

Brad has a robust and resilient relationship with Dynamite Concrete Constructions- the main contractor to both Doric and the JV of Multiplex/ Cooper and Oxley.

    The three projects:

    · Karratha Health Campus - 150 Tonne to site to date

    · Karratha Art Centre - 143 Tonne to site to date

    · Cape Lambert Power Station commences in the New Year and estimated 200+ Tonne

Total Tonnes for the 3 projects when completed will be 1000+Tonne.

The key to winning these projects was Brad’s ability to engage all stake holders and become a pseudo Project Manager. Making sure everything is on site when required Brad has to stay in regular contact with Simon Waight and the team at SiC as well as transport companies not to mention of course Dynamite.

  • NEWSOn the 1st of September OneSteel Metalcentre started supply of materials to Olympic Dam in South Australia.

This is new business and provides much welcomed additional revenues to our Port Adelaide business.

Included in the contract supply is Plate, Mine Mesh, D-bar, and ERW Pipe and Fittings. Already, however, supply has included a wide range of stainless steel as well as some valving demonstrating the value of our “generalist” offer to mining organisations.

To win this contract OneSteel Metalcentre participated in four e-auction events for supply. At the close of all 4 auctions, Metalcentre was the preferred bidder.

“Although there is still some water to go under the bridge before all parcels are fully secured, finishing first is the start you want to achieve” said John Farquharson National Business Development Manager Mining and Energy.

This is a great example of preparation and collaboration between OneSteel Reinforcing and Metalcentre to deliver on this business opportunity.

Thanks must go especially to John Farquharson for his thorough planning, communication and diligent efforts to turn this opportunity into reality.

With only a few months left on the Steel, Pipe and Fittings FPA, National Mining Account customer BMA requested a 6 month extension to their current agreement while they transitioned procurement departments into the consolidated Minerals Australia model.

During a regular Contract Performance Review meeting at BMA’s 480 Queen Street Brisbane headquarters, the OneSteel Metacentre delegated negotiators, John Farquharson (Mining Business Development), Peter Davidson (State Manager – QLD) and David Woods (Mackay Branch Manager), successfully tabled a 12 month extension to the current contract term and price increases on a small but significant number of items where the price had become unsustainable over the life of the contract.

Peter Davidson remarks “After winning the contract some time ago through an on line auction process, it was refreshing to be in front of a customer

who now clearly values us as a supplier. The Mackay team has demonstrated OneSteel Metalcentre is a vendor that BMA believes is worth having and OneSteel Metalcentre views BMA as a valued customer that we want to keep.”

To offset the increases the negotiating team was able to offer BMA a number of cost saving and medium term initiatives which highlighted the inherent value in continuing to partner with a strong and reliable supplier such as OneSteel Metalcentre.

Well done to all those involved in the agreement extension – a great win for Queensland!

  • Early in the New Year I will be launching the details on how we will become a referral agent for SteelX (who own the Widespan Sheds brand). This now gives us an opportunity to drive revenue in a segment we have not had the ability to be very active in to date.

Most sheds these days are made from roll-formed components which is one of the most cost-effective methods of construction. The trend is DIFM (Do It For Me) rather than DIY, i.e. people want the material, concrete pad and installation in the one transaction to save their time and hassle.

Whilst we can offer componentry such as structural steel, roll-form and sliding door hardware for example – we cannot offer the council approvals, site-preparation, concrete pad, engineering etc. This new offer will not cannibalise the sales of our products if customers choose to build from these.

We will now have a full range and complete shed offer to present to the market including Rural Sheds, Barns, Industrial, Stables, Garages, Machinery Sheds and Carports.

How will it work? Our locations (Metalcentre and Midalia Steel branches) will take enquiries for sheds.

We will fill out a referral quote request form with basic information and email it to SteelX. That’s the last we will hear of it until we receive our referral fee (if an order is placed). SteelX will take the enquiry and make contact with the customer on OUR BEHALF as a representative of our business.

SteelX will follow up the quote, liaise with the customer, and accept the order and co-ordinate installation (via sub-contractor) of the shed if required.

    Job done.

    OneSteel / Midalia Steel Sheds

eLearningThanks to the staff who have tested the DuraGal® eLearning module in which our eLearning Specialist, Lucy Hood has put together.

Rather than get too technical with the system, I wrote this module to really give our people a base understanding of:

    • What a bearer and joist system is (in general)

    • The situations where a DFS can be a viable, competitive option for customers

    • Benefits of our system

    Kevin Hume - Marketing Manager

Cited for Feb 2017 I will be running a combined rural and roll-form product promotion to drive sales in these key categories. Both of these categories have the potential for significant revenue gains at good margins and directly align with our geographical areas where most of our locations are.

The promotion will be targeted to those branches who are keen to push and find incremental revenue gains for their locations. This will purely be focussed on those locations that have an appetite to take part.

That is a wrap for Complementary Products. I hope you and your family have a Safe and Merry Christmas!

  • Every year thanks to our sponsorship deal with Nissan Motorsport, branches across Australia have the opportunity to reward their customers with a ride in one of Nissan Motorsport’s high performance V8 supercars.

In Victoria this event is held at Calder Park Raceway; a local race track for Nissan Motorsport and an easy location for Scoresby and Shepparton customers to travel to.

Myself and Maurice Pessot (Project Sales Manager) hosted the event in conjunction with our co-sponsors also attended on the day including OneSteel Reinforcing.

The four customers who us include Peter Godfrey from Echuca Metaland, Scott from Mefco, Andrew Picinich from Renton Engineering and Malcolm Smith from TMF Engineering.

There was even an opportunity for Maurice to squeeze into the speed machine and reach speeds in excess of 260 km/ph!

Despite the icy cold day the customers happily had their professional photos taken in the hot seat as a memento. Nissan Motorsport personally contacted our customers to thank them and share the photos.

Our customer Scott said he “had a lot of fun” and another customer Malcolm said he “couldn’t have held on any tighter when the car was banking around the corners!”

Next year OneSteel Metalcentre Victoria is going to run a state wide competition to win Nissan Motorsport merchandise and the opportunity for a ride in a V8 supercar via a sales promotion.

This fantastic day is thanks to the Nissan Motorsport Team in-conjunction with Kevin Hume, Wayne Lee, Maurice Pessot and Duane Cornish.

Jack Norris - Business Development Manager

Recently OneSteel Metalcentre Scoresby and Shepparton rewarded four key customers with the opportunity to take a ride in a V8 supercar! This involved being driven by one of the 8 Nissan Motorsport Team drivers, which includes Rick and Todd Kelly.

  • OneSteel Metalcentre continues to think outside the box with its project to improve customer satisfaction and profitability within the Tasmanian region.

This initiative culminated in November 2016 through the relocation of OneSteel Metalcentre Hobart to a shared site with OneSteel Reinforcing (OSR) just 2.3km away from its original home.

With a considerable amount of planning it was predicted this strategy would save OneSteel Metalcentre a significant amount in location costs annually whilst also improving site access and processing capabilities for customers.

Once the decision was made and approved by the retrospective businesses, Jack Norris project managed this venture with Aiden Trevan (Regional Tasmania Manager) as the site recruited a new manager, David Marshall.

Jack and Aiden worked with key people across the business to plan the customer service space, layout, inventory, traffic management, safety policies and procedures and supply chain.

Both businesses had to overcome the challenge of having less space with OSR reducing its site footprint by 50% and OneSteel Metalcentre reducing its storage space by over 400m2. Both businesses now share a single hoist crane with OneSteel Metalcentre having their own dual hoist crane they use primarily.

These challenges where seen as opportunities for forward synergies that will improve operational productivity and customer satisfaction with the feedback from a significant amount of the customers supporting the relocation.

The main challenge was the crane relocation, after the install the crane became unexpectedly non-operational 3 days before the opening. Robin Juriansz (Safety & Operations Manager) and the contractors worked tirelessly to have the crane operating at 50% capacity at the “12th hour”.

Despite this and now having a 3 day window to relocate and be operational at the new location instead of the planned 3 weeks, OneSteel Metalcentre opened at the new location on the 31st of October with over 80% of the required materials and racking!

David and his team are moving forward in December with the arrival of a new bandsaw and a cut to length Bondek processing area accompanied by an extensive marketing and retention plan.

The marketing and retention plan aims at increasing brand awareness, customer retention, includes a massive giveaway promotion, TV advertising and increased market presence matched by an increased ex-Launceston service offer.

Early success is already evident from the TV campaign. Through this marketing, the business has started seeing many new retail customers who’ve came to us after seeing our ads on TV. A big risk was not being able to retain customers through the transition however early and promising results have shown the business can build a strong presence within the Hobart retail market space.

We would like thank all involved with too many to name from the Hobart and Launceston teams, David Marshall, Stephen Harvey and senior management who continue to look outside the square to ensure sustained profitability for the business whilst meeting customer expectations. A special mention must go to the Hobart Operational staff who have gone above and beyond to make the physical transition as smooth as possible with all guys giving up their weekends in the lead up to ensure we were able to start trading as planned.

This certainly was a case of Yes, We Can!

    Aiden Trevan, Jack Norris

The 272 tonnes of processed steel was efficiently produced by the Production Manager, Muralidhara Sharma and his processing team at the Wetherill Park location.

The project required accurate and prompt technical program information which was well communicated at all levels including project managers and programmers through to the clients’ project design engineers. This allowed us to deliver material on time and with minimal error.

Like with many large projects, we faced some teething issues, particularly in the beginning, though the processing team did manage to prioritise the customer’s key requirements and deliver sections directly to the customer on time, averaging approximately 2 drops per week over the course of 4 months.

Management of such a large scale project can be difficult at any time; one important element when running a project of this size is maintaining clear lines of communication between all parties. Communication certainly assisted OneSteel in being able to meet the customer’s expectations whilst working within our capacity levels and delivering a successful project outcome.

I would personally like to congratulate Production Manager Muralidhara Sharma and his team at Wetherill Park, whom were fundamental in delivering a successful processing outcome and I look forward to continuing to work with the team into the future.

Damian Pedersen - Account Manager Wollongong

Being awarded the Canberra Hospital project c/- ANJ Fabrications & Rigging Services was an extremely fortunate and pleasing result for the Wollongong and Wetherill Park branches.

    What a year!

We started the year showing support to the Heart Foundation with Lock in the Love in Forest Chase, and carried the healthy living health heart message with us as we went to each of the rural Field Days.

We’ve also promoted the Mental Health & Well Being message to our Staff and Customers, as well as donations to the Food Bank of non-perishable food items for those less fortunate.

Although the current market conditions and the VA have both proven challenging to everyone in the business, branches have collectively found ways to continue to make a profit at the same time as meeting customer expectations, without compromising on safety.

Conferences during the year saw Branch Managers from Midalia & OneSteel Metalcentre get together to network giving a better understanding of the different capabilities we all have to assist in improving services and how to win in today’s climate.

Our 2ICs, the up & coming leaders of the business, got together with a focus on training and empowering our teams.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Christmas break.

  • Current News...

Four of our OneSteel Metalcentre hubs/ regions are now operating on the new Transport Management System (TMS).

TMS is an integrated SAP tool that allows transport planners to visualize their route planning and improve the overall utilization of trucks across the fleet. A part of the solution also involves GS1 messaging to our transport carriers, and event updates back into

SAP for the salesperson to have visibility of where the truck is and is going and also to see the time at the customer site.

TMS allows for accurate costing of every shipment and drop on that shipment by using rates cards that represent the cost of freight to our business and apportioning the cost of that freight back to individual materials and sales orders.

The next site(s) to roll will be Brisbane in February 2017 followed by our Mayfield business in Newcastle in March 2017.

The project team has also now started revisiting some of the opportunities that TMS presents so we can understand how we can use the tool to drive better freight outcomes for our businesses across our networks and supply chains.

    TMS Go Lives and Rollout

MDE RolloutThe rollout of the CN51 MDE units continues with implementations in Adelaide, Wetherill Park, Scoresby, and Brisbane. Perth had their training in November 2016, and Newcastle will follow in the new calendar year.

There is still a lot of work to do in the MDE area, with the bulk of the focus today on picking with the units in the main. Loading and Receipting is currently being looked at with some further enhancements to come in these two areas in the New Year.

The change to the units has generally been well received. There are some hardware issues that we are still progressing with our vendors, mainly in relation to battery life of the units.

Up and Coming Initiatives & Projects…

The OneSteel Metalcentre IT team, in conjunction with business representatives, have been working on the development of a refreshed HU Label that will provide not only additional (much required) information for our customers, but also our very own OneSteel Metalcentre 2D (GS1) barcode. Similar to the enhancement this is provided when picking product

sourced from Market Mills, our customer will be able to use this information to receipt in their product and/ or manage the bundles if project related as a result of the information provided on the label. Although it’s still a work in progress we are hopeful to see the new label in use by the business before the end of the calendar year.

2D Barcodes (GS1) and New HU Labels

MDE ReceiptingThe next phase of MDE usage focuses upon how we can use the device for receipting in products received from Market Mills. Today we are able to receipt in goods received from the Mills, but it’s a cumbersome process requiring duplicated capture of information or considerable manual intervention. This new project is to look at how we can leverage off barcode information provided on the Market Mills product delivery paperwork, streamline the receiving process within our Hubs, and limit the amount of manual steps required to complete the process.

The benefits of finalising receipting with the MDE’s is the real time update of stock on hand when the truck arrives. This is imperative for the system to release outbound documents waiting for stock to arrive,

and the sooner this can occur the better chance we have at picking the product and planning it on a truck the next day, thereby making our customers very happy.

The project has just completed a survey phase, where the project team sought input by the HUBs to help us ensure we understood the business processes, trigger points and idiosyncrasies that exist in the actual management of receiving and unloading trucks. The results of this survey will be consolidated and analysed in preparation for a workshop to be held in the coming months.

It’s great that nearly everyone in this business can take some well-deserved time off work at Christmas, however how many of you actually relax during this time? Studies have shown the hustle and bustle of the Christmas holiday can be even more stressful than working!

It is so critical to take good quality time to unwind every year, it helps avoid burnout and exhaustion. Recharging your batteries can make all the difference not only to your workplace performance but also your quality of life!

So here are some top tips on how to properly enjoy your break and most importantly RELAX:

    Change up your routine –

If you’re staying at home over Christmas why not give your normal routine a miss. Little things like ordering some takeaway instead of cooking, leaving

the housework until tomorrow, have a sleep in or spend some time on the couch watching a movie. Will it really matter if you don’t wash up one night or if you sleep in one day? Probably not! Doing things that are different from your normal schedule will help your body and mind to properly unwind.

Spend some time in the outdoors –

We know being confined to an office or warehouse for most of your year can take its toll on your sanity! It’s time to get outside and experience the elements – get some fresh air into those lungs! Play some cricket, organise a BBQ with some quality friends, exercise outdoors, take a trip with the kids out to the country, have a picnic, read a book in the park, go bush walking, fishing or camping. The peacefulness and serenity of nature has a miraculous way of eliminating stresses which allows you to enjoy what matters most in your life. Its cheap therapy we say!

Make sure you laugh :-D –

We often take life too seriously and we’re sure you’ll notice the difference in your mood after a good ol’ belly laugh. The endorphins we receive from laughing does wonders for our energy, health and quality of our relationships. Spend some time with people who make you laugh or go and watch a funny movie, be on the lookout for things that will get those endorphins going!

It’s often the simplest of things that allow us to unwind and relax the best. Enjoy your break, be safe and we’ll see you nice and refreshed for the New Year!

on how to relax over the Christmas break

We finished 18% higher in tonnes per day than our average which is just over 1615 additional incremental tonnes.

Whilst the promotion was similar to the previous 2 years there were some improvements, changes and market conditions worth noting:

    • This year was a 6 week promotion as opposed to 7 weeks last year.

    • We set ourselves a higher baseline tonne measurement by measuring annual consumption vs. smaller baseline period. This resulted in the baseline being 300 TN/Day (vs. 259 last year).

    • We had 9 less locations to sell from.

    • There were some timing challenges with P&T price increase August 2016.

    • Significant environmental challenges in SA, Northern VIC and Southern NSW.

Thanks to all staff for making this years’ Endura500 Pipe & Tube promotion another success!

Despite the challenges, it again proved a very successful promotion. This success is down to our people working very hard to sell, pick and deliver the product during the promotion. Thank you for all your efforts!

It was also exciting to see one of our largest customers, Samaras Structural Engineers, being drawn as the major prize winner!

Well done to NSW who took out the State Championship for the 2nd year running.

  • Corinne Bryan (Internal Sales – Mt Gambier):

Over Christmas I like to catch up with my family and friends. I also love to paint, something that I have been teaching myself over the last couple of years. I paint landscapes and am trying to do some portrait work at the moment. Mind you, I also love sharing a meal and a few wines with loved ones.

Chang Liu (Logistics and Import Coordinator, DHO):

I will go bushwalking and fishing. Also I’d like to just sit in my backyard with a cup of tea and literally do nothing to really relax and enjoy the Christmas break.

    Walter Dawood (Storeperson Wetherill Park):

During the Christmas period a great way of relaxing is to take a drive down to the South Coast of NSW and explore the coastline.

    Marion Braun (Administrator QLD):

Christmas on the farm means I can spend some time quietly enjoying the animals instead of having to muster and work them. Hmm, I wonder if the same could be said for extra time with my partner…

Tim Bamford (State Safety and Operations Manager QLD):

I will be spending time at Noosa (Queensland) over the break with my family. During this time I’ll be hanging out at the beach with my kids, teaching them how to stand up paddle board and doing lots of running in the outdoors.

    Kelsie Jones (CSO, Broome):

Over Christmas Broome gets quite hot. With our wet season weather starting we spend a lot of time down the beach or inside keeping cool. We head up to the mangrove for a few drinks to celebrate and take in the view.

    David Marshall (Branch Manager Hobart):

I will enjoy spending time with friends, family, going fishing and to festivals. This is my 6 month old boy’s first Christmas so it will be memorable!!! Have a safe break everyone!!!

    Wayne Lee (State Manager Victoria):

Whilst on leave over Christmas I am hoping to spend many hours walking this pier, sitting and fishing, not even caring if I don’t get a bite just looking to chill out and enjoy the outdoors.

Susan Holmes (Inventory Coordinator – Spearwood):

Over the holidays we like to chill out, eat, drink and catch up with family and friends, prefer to do some of this down South.

Greg Cocks (National Estimator - DuraGal® Flooring System):

We try to have a family Christmas Day on the Lake (weather permitting) and as my wife mostly works up until NYE, over the last few years my son and I have gone away on the bikes for the week. This year is no different and we have a trip planned for a ride north through the Great Dividing Range from the Barrington Tops to the Nymboida area camping along the way.

THERE IS ALWAYS LOTS HAPPENING ON DIGITAL, BUT HERE ARE A FEW HIGHLIGHTS FOR YOU.

Throwback Thursday #ThrowbackThursday is a social campaign we are running on the OneSteel Metalcentre Facebook page. It features historical photos (company related) that have been gathered over the years, some dating back as far as the 1950’s! The campaign is designed to add a light and interesting twist to our usual presence. The campaign is gaining good attention too, you are encouraged to jump online to have a look for yourself! https://www.facebook.com/onesteelmetalcentre

    Here’s some examples:

We’re currently trialling Pre-Roll Advertising on YouTube for Midalia Steel, which is the 30 second ads which pop up at beginning of YouTube clips.

So far it has proven to be very cost effective, due to the fact we only pay if a video is skipped after 15 seconds. This has been driving a good amount of traffic to the website! See the advert here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hznvTLSsEsE

The “Top Dog” campaign reflects the Midalia Steel branding and communicates the fact that Midalia Steel is the Top Dog in roll-form products. This is their largest retail customer product category.

Caroline’s background is within the building industry, she has held several key customer service positions. Caroline has also brought her business project fulfilment, warehouse and transport planning capabilities.

One of the reasons Caroline was attracted to the role was that she sought the challenge of being able to test her skills and be part of bringing the business back into a profitable position.

Caroline has introduced a renewed focus on servicing customers, by instilling a culture of proactive communication. A great example of this

new culture occurred recently when the power supply to Wetherill Park was interrupted for 6 hours during the evening. This shut down our warehouse and processing operations. Caroline was able to send out an immediate notification to all customers expecting morning deliveries advising that there may be delays. Caroline also brought in members of her team early the next morning to call these customers to provide updates on the situation. The result of this action was good customer feedback on how we handled the event which helps to strengthen and rebuild our relationships with our customer base.

Caroline looks forward to continuing her positive contribution to the business by drawing from her highly developed skills, implementing measures to improve the customer service experience and being part of furthering a culture that fosters and develops individuals to personal and professional success.

Great effort Caroline, in improving the business as well as customers experiences with us!

Caroline Sihavong was recently employed at our Wetherill Park branch as a Customer
