WBKA NEW MEMBERS - STEVE MIRANDA & ROHAN CLIFFORD

WBKA welcomes new member

PROFESSOR STEVE MIRANDA

The Founder and Chief Instructor of National Karate

Academies is Professor Steve Miranda, a very talented and experienced Instructor in many different styles of martial arts. Professor Steve Miranda is highly recognised in the martial arts community & has a reputation for quality martial arts training. He is a true free stylist, with a traditional

background.

Professor Steve Miranda’s love affair with the martial arts began at a very early age, when he was introduced to Kancho Bill Fenton by his grandfather Angie Miranda because of a fight in the play ground. A fighter by nature, the young Steve Miranda became Kancho Bill Fenton’s most dedicated and best student, and their introduction saw the beginning of a life long relationship, lasting nearly 40 years. Professor Steve always said that Kancho Bill was his “second father”. Kancho Bill graded Professor Steve Miranda to 8th Dan black belt in Judo and Jujitsu for his knowledge, experience and dedication which took 40 years. His wish was to grade Professor Steve to 10th Dan before he died, but sadly Kancho Bill passed away on 15th Sep 2005, 77 years of age.

He will always be remembered & deeply missed, however Kancho Bill Fenton's legacy lives on.

After training in Judo and Jujitsu for many years, the young Steve Miranda asked Kancho Bill if he could try a kicking art like Tae Kwon Do to add a new dimension to his thirst for knowledge. After careful consideration this request was granted, and unbeknown to both mentor and protégé, it was to mark the beginning of a very long and arduous journey, which would see the birth of a unique and more user-friendly style of martial art. Professor has trained and graded in many styles from white belt including Silat, Kung Fu, various jujitsu systems, Zen Do Kai Karate,

Kin Bushi Ryu Karate, and the list goes on.

WBKA NEW MEMBERS - Welcome Shihan Rohan Clifford

WBKA welcomes new member Shihan Rohan Clifford Shihan Rohan Clifford has a wealth of martial arts knowledge & experience.

We’ve been friends for a very long time & have trained together for the past 10

years or more. Shihan Rohan spent many years in the SA Police Force including a number of

years in the Fraud Squad. His martial arts teachers over the many years have

been of an extremely high standard including Soke’s Bob Jones & Richard

Norton; Eric Paulson, Kyoshi’s Billy Manne, Justin Boylan & Peter Richardson.

Rohan says the teacher who had the biggest impact on his martial arts skills level

was the late Kyoshi Charlie. Rohan has attended many seminars taught by high

ranking teachers including Hanshi Patrick McCarthy. His martial arts

qualifications include 5th dan Zen Do Kai, 5th Dan Krava Maga BJMA & high

Teaching rank in BJC Muay Thai. In his early years he also trained in

boxing. In addition he has a wealth of grappling experience. His extensive martial arts experience combined with his practical

experience of street situations, during his time in SAPOL, has enabled him

to become a ‘formidable’ opponent & an ‘elite’ martial arts teacher.

It was not so much a

Meeting of Styles as

a Sharing of Styles.

I was up very early to travel,

from way down South

(Morphett Vale, Adelaide,

South Australia), all the way

up to the WBKA Hombu dojo

at Para Hills, SA.

I was expecting a group of

anywhere between 20 to 30+

participants. However the

ever exciting Clipsal 500 in

Adelaide was on, taking

precedent over most

activities including our

seminar.

The small participant

numbers belied the high

level of expertise shared

within the group. As always

the benefits of learning

within a very small group, or

even better on a one to one

basis, are far superior

compared to learning in a

large group. It was decided that each member would take turns in teaching for a

short time.

John Alford Sensei from Tugra Shan Martial Arts began by sharing

some of his knowledge of Japanese Swordsmanship (Iaijutsu & Kenjutsu). John Alford

sensei has developed & created his own iaijutsu & kenjutsu syllabus after having

trained extensively, under the guidance of previous teachers including Soke Sekiguchi

in Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu. He began by explaining bowing in etiquette &

extremely important safety aspects of handling a bokken. The group was then taught

the first (ipponme) kata which he has named Shiho no Kata (the kata of 4 directions).

MEETING OF STYLES 6th MARCH, 2016 Page 2

Tony Ricketts Sensei

from Hikari Aikido

added to the theme by

teaching the Aikido 4

directional cuts. He expanded

this further by demonstrating

the 8 & then 16 directional

cuts. Next on the agenda he

taught some very useful sword

disarms. We practiced the

techniques in pairs. I was

particularly lucky & paired up

with Tony sensei who showed

me the finer details of the

techniques.

Pete Pace Sensei from

Goshin Ryu Bu-Jutsu shared

some ninjutsu short sword defences

against a bokken. He explained as

the ninjutsu sword is straight &

much shorter than a katana, one

must move much quicker & much

closer to the opponent in order to

cut & disarm an opponent. He

demonstrated one hand techniques

& then finishing using the other hand on the back of the

blade to reinforce the secondary follow up cuts &

takedowns.

Jamie from WBKA taught some Hoshiyama Jujitsu

sword disarm techniques which we all enjoyed.

Stewart Mcritchie from WBKA taught a couple

of Hoshiyama Jujitsu wrist locking & takedown waza.

Our Zambian female Judo champion Mary Kanyemba 17 years old, 48kg weight category who will represent her country at the Commonwealth Judo Championships on 23rd April in South Africa, and hopefully on her way to the Olympics later.

WBKA

Bret ran the Torbay half marathon to raise money for the WBKA Zambian project which was then paid into the “WBKA Zambian fund”. Bret, on meeting young Mary Kapasa, requested funds from WBKA be released to pay for her fees while she was training for the upcoming World Judo Championships and the Rio Olympics? WBKA is proud to say it released these funds for Mary! Mary Kapasa ranked 3rd best in Judo in Africa!

Bret has flown back out to Kitwe for 2 months to start organising the building of the toilet block....they will in the next week break the ground to lay the foundations.

WBKA is instrumental in not only just raising and supplying the funds but, also assisting in the organising and building of the block.

Jonathan Kruger sensei and myself (Bret Smith) with Lance Corporal, Benson Nkonde, at his home in Zambia! He is wearing the medal I received on completing the Torbay half marathon for the WW2 veterans and orphans of Kitwe, Zambia.

Tugra Shan Martial Arts hosted the

World Budo Kan Association

‘Meeting of Styles Seminar’ at

Tugra Shan hombu dojo, Antonio

Catholic School in Morphett Vale.

Arriving bright & early at 8:15am

I began unloading a heap of training gear for

the day including bokkens. In addition there

was food, drinks, tables and much more.

I swept the whole gym which was unusually full

of dirt & dust. It didn’t make a dent in the dust

& so with desperation I rang my good wife

Sophie & asked if she could please bring my

garden blower. There was a lot of work to do

including cleaning the floor, putting out the

mats, chairs & tables. The mats had to be

sterilised & cleaned. Signs had to be set up,

tables for lunch put up & so on it went. I’d had a

shower but now needed another one. This is

part & parcel for all clubs that host a seminar &

is part of the fun. ‘If you want to get something

out of life, you have to give!’ You have to enjoy

what you do in your life or else what is the

point of it!

It was a resounding success

with a great mix of juniors &

adults.

Teaching on the day was

senseis Carl Withey (WBKA),

John Alford (Tugra Shan

Martial Arts), Tony Ricketts

(Hikari Aikido) & Professor

Steve Miranda with two of his

senior teachers Tashi Lorne

Farrelly & Sensei Dwayne

Skuse (National Karate Academies).

All students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Other guests included Eamonn

Burke (Hikari Aikido); Barry Morgan (BJCMA—Blackwolf); Geoff Dymott & Shayla (WBKA).

Tony Ricketts Sensei from Hikari Aikido

taught Aikido to juniors on one set of mats.

Meanwhile Carl Withey Sensei, President

of the World Budo Kan Association taught

jujitsu to the adults.

After a short break the seminar resumed

& Professor Steve Miranda taught jujitsu &

some pressure point striking. John Alford Sensei

(Tugra Shan Martial Arts) taught basic

Iaijutsu (Japanese Swordsmanship) to the

juniors.

Lunch, supplied by Tugra Shan Martial Arts parents &

John Alford Sensei, was enjoyed by all & provided just

the right atmosphere for socialising amongst students

& teachers.

Tony Ricketts Sensei, having taught the juniors

some tanto defences before lunch, went on to share his

tanto skills with the adults.

“A huge thank you to Sensei John Alford Tugra Shan

Martial Arts, his students, and support team, who put

on a fantastic seminar and providing some great food.

This seminar was about “focusing on our youth”.

Also a big thank you to our guest instructor for the day:

Professor Steve Miranda, from National Karate

Academies, and two of his senior students.

Thank also to Tony Ricketts sensei, John Alford sensei

and Carl Withey sensei for sharing their valuable time

and knowledge to every student.

Great to see Richard Harding sensei, back at the

seminar after his recent operation, supporting every

one with his usual enthusiasm.

A great seminar thanks to everyone involved.” Kyoshi Carl Withey

“Thank you Sensei John Alford for your kind comments...You are an amazing

kind person with beautiful Budo...Your
