Record stores failto cash in on thevideo bandwagonINITIAL EXPECTATIONS that therecord retail trade would become asignificant force in the video softwarebusiness have failed to materialise.

Although a number of leading multi-ples have entered the market, very fewindependent record retailers havemoved into video and it is now beingclaimed that the record trade has missedthe bandwagon.

Amid video industry predictions thatthe retail sector is fast approachingsaturation point, this is the currentconcensus among leading video softwaredistributors and wholesalers.

Presision Video managing director,Walter Woyda, told Record Business:"Only seven percent of our accounts arerecord outlets. It's just not happeningfor record retailers and those who havemoved into video are not taking enoughstock to run libraries. They have left ittoo late to get into the video business."

A spokesman for CIC Video com-mented: "Overall, record shops are notgoing into video. There has been noincrease in the number of record shopscarrying video and on the whole thosethat do, place the smallest orders."

Barry Gold, S. Gold & Sons director,

said: "There is still the odd record shopcoming in but they only account for tenpercent of our accounts. There has beenno significant increase and some recordshops that were stocking video are nowbeginning to pull out."

And according to wholesaler, Wynd-Up Records, the resistance to videofrom within the record trade has meantthat in many cases record shops thatwere considering a move into video havebeen squeezed out by the rapid expan-sion of the specialist video retail busi-ness.

RAVRO, the Record and Video Re-tailers' Organisation, blames the reluct-ance of dealers fairly on the shoulders ofthe manufacturers for allowing a mas-sive black market in counterfeit videosto grow up.

At their meeting last week St Alban'sdealer Mark Green said that he hadrejected the idea of stocking videos forthis reason. "Are legitimate dealersgoing to be around long enough to takeadvantage of this industry?" he asked.

This will be one of the major talkingpoints when RAVRO meets the BritishVideogram Association, the manufac-turers association, because it feels that

Concert halls must pay giant licence feesA BID to put a halt to the soaring cost ofmusic and dancing licences for Londonmusic venues failed in the High Courtlast week.

In April of 1980 the GLC increased itsformerly nominal charges for entertain-ment licences by between 237 percentand 594 percent according to the size ofthe venue.

Premier rock venues like the Ham-

mersmith Odeon and The Venue foundthemselves faced with enormous jumpsin their GLC bills. The Odeon's licencewent from £864 in 1979 to £6,000 in1980, while the Venue's bill was £150 in1979 and £2,000 in the following 12months.

When the Rainbow Theatreannounced its closure earlier this year, itblamed the vastly increased GLC licence

as one of the main reasons for theshutdown.

But last week two judges dismissed atest case appeal by the Rank Organisa-tion who contended the increased feeswere not within the GLC's discretionand were unreasonable. Counsel forRank, who were ordered to pay theGLC's costs, said they would appealagainst the decision.

RAVRO hits outat chain storediscountsABOLITION OF discounts to cut-price retail chains such as Our Pricewill be high on the agenda when theRecord and Video Retailers' Organisa-tion (RAVRO) has its first meetingswith record manufacturers for 20months.

The organisation's executive com-mittee decided to restore the previous-ly annual meetings with manufacturerswhen it met in London last week.

"I don't think that the companieslike to see quality product plasteredover chain store windows as an induce-ment to enter, but at prices whichcannot possibly earn a profit," saidvice-chairman Alan Davidson, whochaired the meeting.

"I would like to meet the dealerswho are selling below trade price andshow them how to sell at a higherprice. The public must be educated tothe fact that records are cheap. If theyknew an album was £4.99 everywherethey would pay it."

"Compared to any other item therecord is good value. The publicshould go where the service is best, notwhere the price is best. In the end allanybody wants to do is make a living,"added Davidson.

The meeting decided that the manu-facturers should be asked to supportthe small trader against the increasing-ly cut-throat price cutting chains.

A letter from RB retail correspon-dent Martin Anscombe was read andthe members shared his concern thatthe burgeoning indie label scene wascausing dealers problems.

Praise was reserved for the RB newrelease listings but it was felt that indielabels could do more to arrange properdistribution deals and inform the tradepress so that ordering could be madeeasy.

Singer claims MAMagreements 'illegal'GILBERT O'SULLIVAN'S long-standing dispute with former managerGordon Mills has broken out into abitter High Court wrangle.

The singer -songwriter claims he waspersuaded to sign illegal agreementswhich were to deprive him of substantialroyalties and the copyrights to his owncompositions.

Andrew Bateson, QC for O'Sullivan,told Mr. Justice Mars -Jones that thesinger was first talent spotted by thepowerful manager Gordon Mills whoalready had Tom Jones and EnglebertHumperdinck on his books.

In a 'quite desperate state' O'Sullivansent Mills a number of demo tapes in abid to make his name. About twomonths later, in February 1970, Millsagreed to become O'Sullivan's managerand set up his protege in a cottage nearhis home.

Over the next few years O'Sullivanwas persuaded to enter into recordingand publishing deals with ManagementAgency and Music (MAM) of whichMills was chairman.

Raymond O'Sullivan and GilbertO'Sullivan Ltd are asking the court toset aside agreements made betweenhimself and his company with the MAMgroup and Mills, who lives in LosAngeles. He is also asking the judge tocancel employment agreements madewith Ebostrail Ltd., of Chancery Lane,London, and a record deal with CBSNew York. The defendents deny O'Sul-livan's claims that the agreements wereillegal and are counter -suing for breach

Project labellaunched withdance singlesPROJECT RECORDS is the name of anew label set up by former Casablancalabel manager Marvin Howell and itsfirst release is available through Deccathis week.

Howell has licensed Goldie Alexan-der's 'Show You My Love' 'Go Back'disco hit from Chas Ro Records of NewYork and is releasing it as a double 'A'side in seven (PRJ 1) and 12 -inch (PRJX1) forms on Friday (March 5).

The record has been featured on theRB Disco Chart for six weeks as animport and Project has an option for afurther single and an album from thelabel.

Second release will be Barbara Rav &Esctasv Passion & Pain's 'If You WantMe'(remix) 'I've Got You' (PRJ (X) 2)later this month and it will be followedby European best seller 'Ma Cuale Idea'by Pino D'Angio.

Bateson said as a result of O'Sullivan'ssingle 'Alone Again' released in Septem-ber 1973, MAM records received£90,000 in royalties, but only £35,000went to the singer. MAM received£84,000 royalties from another 45`Clare'.

At the time, said counsel, the singerwas not really concerned about moneybecause he felt Mills had been helpful insetting him up - "He did not feel hecould be anything but grateful." By theend of 1973 he had become extremelysuccessful and had generated more than£2 million alone from the sales of theHimself album.

But despite that, MAM Records keptO'Sullivan on a very low royalty of fivepercent. It was at that stage that hediscovered that the singer Lynsey dePaul earned a royalty of eight percent.The hearing is expected to last threeweeks.

WEA creditsdealers after12 -inch mix-upWEA IS to credit dealers who have beenover -charged by the company's compu-ter for Beggars Banquet 12 -inch singles.

When WEA increased its prices at theend of last year, its large -format 45swent up from £1.22 to £1.49 to thetrade, but Beggars Banquet productstayed at the old price tag.

Beggars Banquet director MartinMills explained: "WEA's computer hasbeen sending out delivery notes for£1.49 for our 12-inchers, but now wehave arranged to credit dealers with theoverpaid 27ps. Only Gary Numan 12-inchers actually went up in line withWEA's new price structure."

CMA opens London officeTHE COUNTRY Music Associa-tion is to open a European office inLondon on March 8.

The CMA, based in Nashville, isexpanding to become more closelyinvolved with the growth of countryoutside America, specifically inEurope.

CMA executive Ed Benson hasbeen named to head the new officeand begins duties as director ofEuropean operations in earlyMarch.

In Europe, as in the USA, theCMA will continue to work throughthe music industry, rather than

He said it was likely to confuse anddeceive people who half -rememberedwhat they .had seen on television andawarded an injunction to Micrometro ina pending damages action against K-telfor alleged 'Passing off. The judgesuggested K-tel should change the nameof its album.

Now the company has been forced tore -name the disc Keep Fit and Dance(NE 1161) and alter the TV commercialscurrently going out on test in theLondon and Central areas.

The company has gathered a collec-tion of big -selling American rap num-bers on a cut-price sampler albumunder the title Rap Tracks (V 2225).The album will take the form of two12 -inch 45s designed to sell at around£4 and contains hits like 'DoubleDutch Bus' by Frankie Smith, 'HereTo Stay' by Count Coolout fromWMOT Records, and other materialfrom the Enjoy label.

Virgin has also picked up a singlecalled 'Hydraulic Pump (Parts 1-3)' bythe P -Funk All Stars and releases it in12 -inch (VS 487 12) and 7 -inch (VS487) on March 5. The bank numbersGeorge Clinton, Sly Stone and BobbyWomack among its members.

HAIRCUT 100's debut album PelicanWest (HCC 100)- out on February 26 - isbeing promoted by a heavy Arista cam-paign including full page advertisements inthe consumer music press and massivewindow displays featuring the stripedwallpaper used on the band's singles bags.The band is touring throughout March andthe dates are being fly -posted.

PUNISHIAGSO A deal has at last been struckbetween the MRS and the BPI over theall-important issue of the basis on whichmechanical royalties should be paid inthe absence of recommended retailprices. Flexible rostering has beenaccepted in royalty departments on bothsides of the industry. And an agreementhas been reached which guarantees`peace in our time' (or until nextChristmas at least).

But how does the new arrangementleave publishers? Life used to be sosimple: take 61/4 percent of the RRP of arecord and give a slice to the writerand/or co -publisher. Under the newdeal, record companies base their pay-ments (for sales since January 1) on 125percent of the dealer price for 7 -inch and12 -inch singles; 131 percent for albumsand cassettes with a dealer price of over£2.75; 136 percent for albums/cassettessold to dealers for less than £2.75; and136 percent of dealer prices for allclassical albums and cassettes.

"Although the impact will vary frompublisher to publisher, the new basiswill mean a fairly significant reductionin mechanical income," admitted EMIMusic Publishing chief and MPA Presi-dent Ron White. "I'm not happy aboutthat. But I think it was the best deal wecould obtain in the present climate.

"We would all have liked a littlemore," he added. "But there was no wayof achieving that without more dis-astrous confrontation. The agreementappears to be fair to both sides and Ihope we are now entering a period ofstability . . . so that we can get on withthe job of selling music."

Although CBS has not yet acceptedthe new basis, White said he hoped thesituation would be resolved soon. Headded that the new agreement will bereviewed in December after the resultsof another joint MRS BPI survey ofretail prices (next November) have beenevaluated. As if to take everyone's mindoff royalty problems, the MPA hasannounced the date of this year's TinPan Alley Ball . . . October 12th. ButMPA Secretary, Peter Dadswell, saysthe event might not even be called theTPA Ball this year. "We are going tomake it something a bit different andrather special," he said. "But we're notplanning to give the game away yet."

Terry Noon - another publisher whohas vacated London's West End - isexcited about his new female singer/songwriter, Julie Wallis. Her version ofthe Chip Taylor classic 'Wild Thing' (onSpeed Records) is poised for a chartentry. Julie wrote the '13' side and Noonsays overseas companies are starting toshow a lot of interest in her.

Another publisher among the ladies isEddie Levy of Heathlevy Music (whoare not now vacating the West End). Hisnew female signing, Katrina, is nowbeing managed by Justin de Villeneuveand the lady makes her debut on theRussell Harty TV show on March 9.A&R men take note, urges Levy.

"Eve since just missing out on KateBush, we have wanted a female singer'songwriter," said Levy. "So we took outan ad in Melody Maker, picked out oneof the many replies and followed it up.Katrina was the result."

In addition to deals inGermany, Sweden and Spain, Greens-leeves boss Chris Sedgewick is laun-ching the label in America this week. PEATUREPAUL CAMPBELLassesses the possibilities ofsuccess in Britain for the newacts from Japan.FOR MOST people, Japanese involve-ment in the music industry ends withthe manufacture of high quality instru-ments, hi-fi, records and blank tapes. Itsmusic is an unknown and unmissedquantity.

In the past, Japanese popular musichas flitted before the British public withthe occasional release or tour by the likesof the Sadistic Mika Band, YellowMagic Orchestra or The Plastics. Buttimes are changing.

Central to the whole Japanese musicstory is Yellow Magic Orchestra - UKhit makers with 'The Theme FromSpace Invaders' - whose importance tothe growth of pop music in the land ofthe rising sun cannot be over -estimated.

Yukihiro Takahashi, Harry Hosonoand Riuchi Sakamoto, who make up theperforming front of YMO, are consi-dered demi gods in Japan where theirimpact can be compared to that of TheBeatles on UK and American audiencesof the 60s.

The electronic music of YMO and itsoffshoots, parallel projects and theartists which they inspired is interna-tional in its appeal and cultural barriersmean little to acts like Takahashi, IppuDo, Susan, Sandii & The Sunsetz, whoare being heavily promoted at present.

To understand this sudden explosionof Japanese product onto the UK mar-ket it is necessary to bring in a companycalled Alfa Records - which had pre-viously been best known as the labelwhich led Lulu in from the wildernesson both sides of the Atlantic.

The story begins with songwriterKunihiko Murai, whose credits includewriting the theme tune for the winterOlympics at Sapporo. He owned astudio and music publishing businessand decided to form his own label fouryears ago. He signed YMO and hasn'tlooked back since.

New UK climate ofacceptance couldhelp Japanese acts

Unlike most Japanese music menMurai is international in his outlook andit was not long after the foundation ofAlfa that a Los Angeles office wasopened with former A&M and RCAvice-president Robert Fead at the head.

The companies run parallel, eachoriginating and promoting its own actsand making economic decisions as towhether to release material in the otherterritory.

For the widescale launch of Japaneseacts the UK was chosen as the firstspringboard - a London office is a

distinct possibility in the near future -and the newly signed internationallicensing deal with CBS was put to thetest.

Alfa also employs Englishman Ed-ward Leaman, a Cambridge graduate,as head of international affairs whichwas ideal in paving the way to a CBScampaign which includes major in-storepromotion in Virgin shops and a strongconsumer campaign.

"The campaign has just begun and webelieve that the technopop sound is onewhich transcends national boundaries.Japanese people want to be acceptedoutside of their own country. YMOshowed that electronic music is univer-sal and the recent success of Kraftwerkproves it.

"If Alfa adopted a slogan it would be`Go For It'. It is a label of style which isnot afraid to suggest new ideas to CBS.We believe that the music creates newmarketing methods. CBS will receive asmuch support as it requires fromJapan," promised Leaman.

Robinson explained why 'CBS UKwas prepared to back the Japanese.product in such a positive way. "TheUK is prepared to accept acts from anycountry at the moment and this publicacceptance is a key factor.

"We have enjoyed a good relationshipwith Epic/Sony but it has been verymuch a one-way trade with The Nolansetc enjoying enormous success in Japanwhile there were no acts to interest us inreturn," he explained.

When Epic/Sony signed Ippu Do andSusan and, 'by an accident of timing',CBS Inc in New York signed Alfa -primarily as a US talent source -Robinson was presented with a supplyof material he thought would do well inthe UK.

He does however warn against view-ing Japanese music as one sound. It haslong been thought impossible to break asingle Japanese artist in the UK, butonce the initial campaign is over theemphasis will be on developing indi-vidual stars.

Japanese music into the UK. Londonbased independent Statik obtained theUK license for Yukihiro Takahashi'ssecond album Murdered By The Musicand released it through Stage One lastweek.

Phonogram's recently launchedMobile Suit Corporation label is soon torelease a compilation featuring severalJapanese artists and the interest isgrowing.

In addition EMI releases an albumcalled Venus (EMC 3403) on March 12.This is credited to Logic System awestern nom de plume for HidekiMatsutake - famed 'fourth member' ofYMO. Although not a performer Mat-sutake is responsible for the computertechnology and can be seen on stageacting as 'engineer plus'.

Tomita is probably the most widelystocked Japanese artist today althoughhe sits uncomfortably between being aserious performer of classical music anda pop artist. He certainly did much topopularise Japanese electronic musicand his RCA catalogue is still alive.

Japanese music, like that of anyculture, has many different forms -from the punk of The Newsbeat (known'as The Mods in Japan) to the fluent jazzexpression of Sadao Watanabe - but theelectronic exponents have most to offer.After all, is Britain ready for a Japaneserockabilly act?

Top 20HAIRCUT ONE HUNDRED: PelicanWest (Arista HCC 100) Prod: BobSargeantDebut album from one of the hottestnew groups to emerge last year. It

begins, quite rightly, with 'FavouriteShirts (Boy Meets Girl)' and goesstraight into the new hit 'Love PlusOne' giving even the uncommittedlistener an introduction to savour. Theother tracks written, or co -written, byNick Heyward display a talent for popsong writing which should stand theband well for years to come. The morethe album is played, the better it

sounds. Haircut One Hundred mayowe a lot of its sound to Joe Jacksonbut there is no denying its entertainingquality. The album comes with freebooklet and picture cards.

Top 60LOU REED: The Blue Mask (RCALP6028) Prod: Lou Reed/Sean FullanThe cover says it all. It mirrors theimage of Reed's fantastically success-ful Transformer album just as themusic beneath does. Since Transfor-mer and the single 'Walk On The WildSide' Reed has gone from one indulg-ence to another and Arista had a veryraw deal out of his signing. Now backwith RCA Reed returns to the soundwhich made him famous. With virtuallyno overdubs he has gone for a freshsound and the material is often stron-ger than he has written for years. Notrack particularly stands out as a singlebut Lou Reed fans should be sufficient-ly impressed by his come -back to wantto hear this album.

VAN MORRISON: Beautiful Vision(Mercury 6302 122) Prod: Van Mor-risonWhen an artist of the calibre of VanMorrison is absent from recording forthree years the 'comeback' work hasto be approached with some trepida-tion. However, Beautiful Vision causesno worries. It is, quite simply, the workof a master songwriter returning withan ease which is quite remarkable.The Van Morrison sound whichreached a peak with such numbers as`Madam George' is in full flow and hisvoice has lost none of its passion.There are plenty of tracks which couldbe pulled for airplay and Phonogramshould promote this release to the DireStraits audience.

Best of the restJONA LEWIE: Heart Skips Beat(Stiff SEEZ 40) Prod: VariousJona Lewie is rapidly becoming anenigma. There are four singles on thisalbum but only one has so far been aUK hit. Even the free record containedin initial quantities 'Kitchen At Parties'was only a minor hit. The massive hit'Stop The Cavalry' is included as isLouise' -a hit all over the world except

the UK - and the singles line-up iscompleted by 'Rearranging The De-

ckchairs On The Titanic. and 'I Think I'llGet My Haircut'. This album is a loosecollection of different styles made allthe more eclectic by the use of RupertHine, Alan Winstanley, Godley &Creme, Bob Andrews, Stephen Lip-son, Dave Robinson, Billy Ritchie andLewie himself as producers.

THE dBs: Repercussion (AlbionALB 109) Prod: Scot LittThe second album from ChrisStamey's dBs fits more easily intocurrent musical trends, being onceagain a mixture of West Coast 60s popand mid -period Beatles. They have noinhibitions about stealing riffs andhooks from any number of sources, butstill manage to come up with someperfect songs - 'Living A Lie' wouldmake a great single. The slower songslike 'We Were Happy There', slip intopsychedelia but never become selfindulgent. If the band can only matchtheir critical acclaim with a little publicappeal they could be very big.

YUKIHIRO TAKAHASHI: MurderedBy The Music (Statik STATLP 6)Prod: Yukihiro TakahashiEnterprising indie Statik take theopportunity of Epic's major Japanesepromotion to release an earlier albumby Yellow Magic Orchestra memberYukihiro Takahashi - one of the fea-tured Epic artists. Featuring all theother members of YMO plus Sandiiand Sheena from Alfa Records this is atop quality album and it should findfavour among those reached by theEpic campaign. The music is rhythmbased electronic pop and the highlightis a version of the Supreme's 'Stop: InThe Name Of Love'.

SHALAMAR: Friends (Solar K52345) Prod: Leon Sylvers IIIDebut album for WEA, who picked upthe Solar label last year, by vocal trioShalamar. Nine disco numbers arefeatured, written by members of fellowSolar acts Lakeside and Dynasty, plusShalamar themselves. This album hasalready started to sell well in specialistshops but its programmed, formula-rised disco sound is unlikely to crossinto general consumption.

THE KNACK: Round Trip (CapitolEST 12168) Prod: Jack DouglasAfter a worldwide smash with 'MySharona', The Knack's career took ahasty nosedive and a lengthy breakbefore coming up with Round Trip. It iscertainly a come -back in some style,sacrificing pure speed for somethingslightly more melodic and in a moremainstream pop vein. The boys havealso been listening to plenty of mid -period Beatles and in several placeslittle touchs like backwards guitar slotsand certain harmonies give the gameaway, but there is no suggestion ofwholesale plundering -just a healthyrespect for the past. Overall, it's acatchy album which might establishthe band given the requisite radiobreaks.

LINVAL THOMPSON: Look How MeSexy (Greensleeves GREL 33) Prod:Linval ThompsonVery strong reggae offering from

Haircut 100 show a sustainedtalent for pop writing

Greensleeves that will pick up plauditsfrom all the specialist press and mightjust break out of the ethnic market andcross over. Thompson is a sweet -voiced Jamaican crooner who writessongs that don't necessarily fall intothe Rastafarian devotional mood, butare often expressing a radical point ofview. He is backed by the respectedRoots Radics outfit, so the rhythms arejust fine.

AIR CONDITION: Namyslowski(Affinity AFF83) Prod: ZbigniewNamyslowskiWorthwhile release from jazz special-ists Affinity featuring a Polish jazz -funkband of considerable talent lead bycomposer/arranger/producer saxmanZbigniew Namyslowski. The rest of thegroup features guitar, bass,keyboards, drums and percussion,and the whole thing maintains a tightrhythmic framework overlaid with in-telligent instrumental work. There is abig market for jazz funk right now, andwhile some of the cuts here are goingto be a little heavy on the jazzemphasis for some, dancefloor play isa possible route to success.

VARIOUS: Gems from the TreasureIsle (Trojan TRLS 206) Prod: DukeReidVARIOUS: Tighten Up Volume 2(Trojan TRLS 207) Prod: VariousTrojan re -issues two of its outstandingJamaican collections which still haveappeal ten years on. Treasure Isle

Yukihiro Takahashi: an earlier albumreleased on the Statik label

was Duke Reid's influential studio, andthe material on the album runs throughska, rock -steady and reggae styles byartists including the Paragons, theMelodians and Tommy McCook withsome real nuggets like 'Rock Steady'by Alton Ellis, `Only A Smile' by theParagons and the primitive toast'Flashing My Whip' standing out.Tighten Up is not quite as authentic -sounding, although it contains thePioneers' Long Shot Kick The Buck-et,"Return of Django' by the Upsettersand Clancy Eccles 'Fattie Fattie'among the 12 cuts of seminal reggae.

RANDOM HOLD: Burn The Build-ings (RCALP 3062) Prod: RandomHold/Rikki SylvanRandom Hold have been around forsome years and a considerableamount of product, without gaining anyrecognition in the UK, and without amajor image building exercise it is hardto see this album succeeding wherethe others have failed. The problemseems to be that all the group's talentand skill seems destined to get themtagged 'clever' rather than entertain-ing. Producer Rikki Sylvan has thatfault himself so ultimately the albumsounds cold.

SUSAN: The Girl Can't Help It (Epic/Sony EPC 85394) Prod: YukihiroTakahashiAs part of the first series of releases inSony new distribution deal with Epiccomes the new album from one ofJapan's latest home -produced popstars, Susan. Susan possesses one ofthe most unusual voices around.
